a one on this edition of the program we're
going to celebrate the 100th birthday of
00:04:46
one of the greatest jazz drummers of all
time the late great Art Blakey is leader
00:04:52
of the Jazz Messengers. 6.
00:05:01
Just this past October the 11th
and 1919 the great drummer
00:05:08
Art Blakey was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
one of the centers for jazz in art
00:05:14
in general in the United States he moved
to New York City after years of traveling
00:05:20
the world and making jazz history and
died at the age of 71. And in October of
00:05:27
1990 he's known as one of the
great musicians and band leaders
00:05:34
great drummer and percussionist who led
his own band Art Blakey in the Jazz
00:05:39
Messengers for years
beginning in the 1950 s.
00:05:45
He worked with
00:05:45
a number of great musicians including
Horace Silver who he co-led the Jazz
00:05:52
Messengers with until Horace decided to
take off and start his own band and then
00:05:57
left the name the Jazz Messengers with
art and he brought in so many fantastic
00:06:02
musicians to work with him teaching some
of the younger generation of players and
00:06:07
you'll hear all about that and hear lots
of the great music that he made over the
00:06:11
years on this edition of jazz America let's
begin with some of his earliest work
00:06:17
recorded in New York in 1956 he always had
00:06:20
a host of fantastic players working with
him including the great saxophonist Jackie
00:06:26
MacLean who joined him on this song
cranky spankie the great Art Blakey
00:06:32
100 years old just last year celebrated
on this edition of jazz America.

One of the premier vocalists in jazz today
paying old Mas' to the late great Art
00:18:26
Blakey That's Gregory Porter with
00:18:29
a Paul Zauner blue brass and their version
of maybe Art Blakey is most famous
00:18:36
song ever moanin from the album
00:18:39
a great voices of Harlem I hope you enjoyed
that in our celebration of the great
00:18:45
Art Blakey continuing here on jazz America
and what a story is his work with
00:18:51
a young artists that he gave
00:18:55
a big helping hand to including Listen to
this list Freddie Hubbard Wayne Shorter
00:19:01
leave Morgan Benny Golson Kenny door I'm
Hank Mobley Donald Byrd Jackie McLean
00:19:08
Johnny Griffin Curtis Fuller Chuck Mann
Joni Chick Corea Keith Jarrett cedar Walton
00:19:15
Woody Shaw and went in and Branford
Marsalis we're going to hear Wynton and
00:19:20
Branford working with Art Blakey in the
Jazz Messengers after we get some thoughts
00:19:25
from. Went in about Mr Blakey his great
teacher here on jazz America this is for
00:19:31
the folks around the world that would love
to be able to hang with Wynton Marsalis
00:19:36
in just a couple of minutes of
doing just that and this is
00:19:39
a very nice time in your life
is it not winter because of
00:19:41
a lot of great things to celebrate at this
point in their shores no complaints you
00:19:46
know I get e-mails from all over the world
it's an astounding thing and so many of
00:19:51
the younger people are writing me saying
I love jazz I want to be I want to be
00:19:55
a jazz musician I want to be involved in
a kind of makes me remember that what
00:20:00
a lot of people have said about you I
can't tell you how many times people have
00:20:03
said remember when Leonard Bernstein did
the concerts for kids and they and when
00:20:07
thousands doing the same
thing that's got to be
00:20:10
a really good feeling to know that that
you're keeping the ball rolling to
00:20:13
a certain extent and I'd
like for you to kind of give
00:20:15
a thought to those folks that are listening
out there those young people the semi
00:20:18
those e-mails that I want to study jazz I
want to learn more about jazz this is an
00:20:22
important thing to us and it
went well it is my father was
00:20:24
a jazz musician he is he's
00:20:26
a teacher I was always around in music
I've always tried to be accessible to the
00:20:30
younger musicians I was
fortunate enough to go in
00:20:33
a role when I was 18. What are Blake in
there what Herbie Hancock in all to me with
00:20:39
the group and I always have kids come in
and band directors bring their kids and
00:20:44
I'm always trying to do workshops and
be be around around kids and just be
00:20:48
a part of shaping the world
a day into but they also do
00:20:52
a lot to shape the world I'm in you know
you mentioned Art Blakey and I'm going to
00:20:56
be doing that I have so many folks I've
talked to that that went to the University
00:21:01
of Hart Blakey and I read
00:21:03
a comment or something I think some time
from you that something along the lines of
00:21:07
you would not you feel like you would not
have embraced jazz as deeply as you have
00:21:11
if you had never met and worked with him
is that something close to what that quote
00:21:15
might may have said I would have been but
I am very steep but I would have learned
00:21:18
how to play it because in order to play
you have to be on the bandstand. It's not
00:21:23
in the practice room you know it's not
some consider the workout in your house an
00:21:28
Art Blakey to you. The word I
get is that it was basically
00:21:33
a situation of here I go if you can jump
in here and hang with me then good luck
00:21:37
and he was like a sacrificial hero
00:21:39
a sacrificial here he was sacrificed his
swing for you learn not. To come to New
00:21:45
York and hear him thank you man they re
rough. And let's travel back in time to
00:21:50
January 1982 and to San Francisco California
to the famous club the Keystone corner
00:21:56
for Art Blakey on drums with went and
Marsalis on trumpet and his brother Branford
00:22:01
Marsalis on saxophone doing felonious Monk's
classic in walk to bud on jazz America

him if I could play and he said yeah.
00:44:48
So anyway I'm. Not to the end of this it
in that he just did me well and it was.
00:44:56
You know how long was that relationship
with but about 3 years. Well Joanne backing
00:45:02

00:04:41
a one on this edition of the program we're
going to celebrate the 100th birthday of
00:04:46
one of the greatest jazz drummers of all
time the late great Art Blakey is leader
00:04:52
of the Jazz Messengers. 6.
00:05:01
Just this past October the 11th
and 1919 the great drummer
00:05:08
Art Blakey was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
one of the centers for jazz in art
00:05:14
in general in the United States he moved
to New York City after years of traveling
00:05:20
the world and making jazz history and
died at the age of 71. And in October of
00:05:27
1990 he's known as one of the
great musicians and band leaders
00:05:34
great drummer and percussionist who led
his own band Art Blakey in the Jazz
00:05:39
Messengers for years
beginning in the 1950 s.
00:05:45
He worked with
00:05:45
a number of great musicians including
Horace Silver who he co-led the Jazz
00:05:52
Messengers with until Horace decided to
take off and start his own band and then
00:05:57
left the name the Jazz Messengers with
art and he brought in so many fantastic
00:06:02
musicians to work with him teaching some
of the younger generation of players and
00:06:07
you'll hear all about that and hear lots
of the great music that he made over the
00:06:11
years on this edition of jazz America let's
begin with some of his earliest work
00:06:17
recorded in New York in 1956 he always had
00:06:20
a host of fantastic players working with
him including the great saxophonist Jackie
00:06:26
MacLean who joined him on this song
cranky spankie the great Art Blakey
00:06:32
100 years old just last year celebrated
on this edition of jazz America.

One of the premier vocalists in jazz today
paying old Mas' to the late great Art
00:18:26

that in our celebration of the great
00:18:45
Art Blakey continuing here on jazz America
and what a story is his work with
00:18:51
a young artists that he gave
00:18:55
a big helping hand to including Listen to
this list Freddie Hubbard Wayne Shorter

Hank Mobley Donald Byrd Jackie McLean
00:19:08
Johnny Griffin Curtis Fuller Chuck Mann
Joni Chick Corea Keith Jarrett cedar Walton
00:19:15
Woody Shaw and went in and Branford
Marsalis we're going to hear Wynton and
00:19:20
Branford working with Art Blakey in the
Jazz Messengers after we get some thoughts
00:19:25
from. Went in about Mr Blakey his great
teacher here on jazz America this is for
00:19:31
the folks around the world that would love
to be able to hang with Wynton Marsalis
00:19:36
in just a couple of minutes of
doing just that and this is
00:19:39
a very nice time in your life
is it not winter because of
00:19:41
a lot of great things to celebrate at this
point in their shores no complaints you
00:19:46
know I get e-mails from all over the world
it's an astounding thing and so many of
00:19:51
the younger people are writing me saying
I love jazz I want to be I want to be
00:19:55
a jazz musician I want to be involved in
a kind of makes me remember that what
00:20:00
a lot of people have said about you I
can't tell you how many times people have
00:20:03
said remember when Leonard Bernstein did
the concerts for kids and they and when
00:20:07
thousands doing the same
thing that's got to be
00:20:10
a really good feeling to know that that
you're keeping the ball rolling to
00:20:13
a certain extent and I'd
like for you to kind of give
00:20:15
a thought to those folks that are listening
out there those young people the semi
00:20:18
those e-mails that I want to study jazz I
want to learn more about jazz this is an
00:20:22
important thing to us and it
went well it is my father was
00:20:24
a jazz musician he is he's
00:20:26
a teacher I was always around in music
I've always tried to be accessible to the
00:20:30
younger musicians I was
fortunate enough to go in
00:20:33
a role when I was 18. What are Blake in
there what Herbie Hancock in all to me with
00:20:39
the group and I always have kids come in
and band directors bring their kids and
00:20:44
I'm always trying to do workshops and
be be around around kids and just be
00:20:48
a part of shaping the world
a day into but they also do
00:20:52
a lot to shape the world I'm in you know
you mentioned Art Blakey and I'm going to
00:20:56
be doing that I have so many folks I've
talked to that that went to the University
00:21:01
of Hart Blakey and I read
00:21:03
a comment or something I think some time
from you that something along the lines of
00:21:07
you would not you feel like you would not
have embraced jazz as deeply as you have
00:21:11
if you had never met and worked with him
is that something close to what that quote
00:21:15
might may have said I would have been but
I am very steep but I would have learned
00:21:18
how to play it because in order to play
you have to be on the bandstand. It's not
00:21:23
in the practice room you know it's not
some consider the workout in your house an
00:21:28
Art Blakey to you. The word I
get is that it was basically
00:21:33
a situation of here I go if you can jump
in here and hang with me then good luck
00:21:37
and he was like a sacrificial hero
00:21:39
a sacrificial here he was sacrificed his
swing for you learn not. To come to New
00:21:45
York and hear him thank you man they re
rough. And let's travel back in time to
00:21:50
January 1982 and to San Francisco California
to the famous club the Keystone corner
00:21:56
for Art Blakey on drums with went and
Marsalis on trumpet and his brother Branford

him if I could play and he said yeah.
00:44:48
So anyway I'm. Not to the end of this it
in that he just did me well and it was.
00:44:56
You know how long was that relationship
