they'll be announcing the new winners tomorrow, as well. >> that's what's making news in that breaking story is out of brooklyn where police have just told eye witness news that they shot a man who opened fire on officers who were sitting in an unmarked police car. laurie is. >> i'm ken rosatto. it's thursday, october 8 l. we want to get right to the news happening last night, rob nelson is live at the scene with an update for us. what do we know rob? >> reporter: good morning. let me step out of the way and give you a look at what's still a very active scene early in brooklyn after some kind of early morning shootout between a gunman and police. we just learned a few minutes
ago that one suspect has been taken into custody after being found at a manhattan hospital. all of this again about all of this began about 10:30 last night near park avenue and north portland avenue. three officers in an unmarked car spotted three men in some kind of dispute and when those cops circled back and confronted the men one of the suspects simply opened fire. now the cops themselves very lucky in all of this. they were not struck but their unmarked car was hit by bullets several times. officers did return require but the suspects managed to run away. now a large section of the area immediately was shutdown. several local roads have been closed and cops canvassed the area eventually finding a gun underneath a nissan suv here at the scene and so they do believe at this hour that was the gun used to shoot at the officers. now, one suspect, a 21 year old man was found just minutes ago at beth israel hospital after checking himself in for a gunshot wound to the leg.
is now in custody; however the other two suspects remain on the loose. now back here again at the scene, live still a very active scene. several police officers still here at the scene. several roads blocked off. you'll see the yellow tape here live behind me and again, the gun they did find under that nissan suv is believed to be the gun used to shoot at the officers but again they were very lucky they were sitting ducks in their unmarked car being shot at by one of those three suspects but those cops again were not hurt taken to the hospital as a precaution but we aren't injured in all this and again that one suspect at beth israel medical center after turning himself in with a gun shot wound to the leg. certainly this could have turned out a lot worse. more live reports coming up, for now reporting live in brooklyn, rob nelson, channel 7 eye witness news. >> rob thank you. stay with eye witness news for the latest on this breaking news. remember you can get breaking news alerts on your smartphone or tablet. download the free eye witness

the q train, ongoing track maintenance, and keep in mind new jersey transit lirr on time that's your northbound time on the new haven line opposite side boarding on the west haven and also at the millford stations. alternate side parking rules are in effect. back over to you. laurie, ken? debbie thank you. 4:34 as debbie just mentioned the new jersey turnpike just reopened after crews worked through the night to clean up that incredible wreckage from a deadly fiery crash. eye witness news reporter mall or it hoff is live with the latest and a new video of the crash. good morning. >> reporter: ken, good morning. that's right. just in the last half hour all lanes here have reopened. this as an extensive and ongoing investigation is now under way. if you take a look here you can see where 15 w toll plaza just beyond this area all three lanes on the northbound western spur that were closed as a result of this accident have now been reopened.
moving and then the driver of a tanker truck swerves and overturns into a guard rail. it then bursts into flames and it happened yesterday just after 3:00 in the afternoon. it stopped traffic during rush hour and investigators say a driver was avoiding a car and that car stopped short when several mattresses and box springs fell from another truck and the tanker truck driver was killed in this trash. the driver whose camera captured the accident described the events that took place. >> to avoid hitting that car he cut it as hard as he could and almost put it over on the driver's side and you come back and it went over on the passenger side there on the guard rail. >> again all lanes have reopened at this time. this as an extensive investigation will continue. channel 7 eye witness news. thank you. developing this morning authorities in jersey city say the deaths of a mother and
child found together in their apartment are suspicious. the two were found in conscience yesterday evening in a second floor unit on lincoln street . the woman was in her 20s and her 5-year-old son were transported to christ hospital where they were pronounced dead. jersey city fire department tested the air quality in the apartment and so far all tests have come back negative for carbon monoxide. new video into eye witness news of a hit and run in the upper east side. police say a delivery driver was hit as he got out of his car at madison avenue and 80th street just before 2:00 this morning . the car believed to have been involved was stopped a short time later on the upper west side at 71st street and west end avenue. two people are now being questioned, delivery driver is expected to survive. time is 4:36. and an nypd watchdog is substantiating an excessive force complaint filed by former tennis pro james blake. surveillance from september showing officer james fruscatoor tackling blake
outside a hotel. a civilian complaint review board says the take down was excessive. that officer will face an administrative trial. in a statement blake said i want to express my appreciation of the civilian complaint review board for their quick and thorough review of the incident. last night police union president pat lynch blasting the ruling saying, "it is is no surprise that the ccrbhad which continues to be nothing more than cop hating branch of the new york civil liberties union would substantiate the use of force complaint in such a questionably public manner." a retired new york city police officer wanted for the murder of his wife on long island is now under arrest. 49 year old paul lightgeb was arrested in upstate new york wednesday accused of killing 42 year old trisha ordierda, as she was found dead last week inside her home in lake grove. police have not released the cause of death. also happening today a former f did into y captain convicted of sexually molesting two young brothers will be sent elsed in
a los angeles court. he care id out the assault while visiting family in la last year. the 51 year old from bay shore long island has negotiated a plea deal. he will be sentenced to five years probation and must serve 270 days in county jail. he must also undergo a year of therapy and register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. time is 4:38. senate democrats are preparing a ledge us late ever push to curve guns a week after nine people were murdered at a mass shooting at an oregon community college. the legislation will be a rallying point for change. democrats are prepared to use procedural delays to block other legislation. if republicans refuse to allow a vote on the gun proposals. a student recognized as a hero for saving lives during the massacre is out of the hospital. chris mince was shot several time while trying to block the killer from entering a classroom. he broke both legs in the attack and will have to learn to walk all over again.
medical bills raised nearly $800,000. officials in south carolina are working to protect the main water source that people living in the state capitol. as crews work to build dams and stop the flooding, hundreds of thousands of people are being asked to conserve water. after part of the canal collapsed, and there are more than a dozen failing dams in south carolina right now after storms hit last week, triggering deadly flooding. >> this is probably the worst i've ever seen since i've been living here and of course my heart goes out to a lot of the families in the columbia and surrounding areas. >> 19 people have died in the carolinas since the flooding started. yesterday rescue crews found the bodies of two people whose car was swept away when they drove around a blocked off road. it's 4:39 and you're never more than seven minutes away from weather and traffic. meteorologist bill evans with the accuweather forecast. >> we take a look outside and we've got clear skies out

4:44. we are following this fast moving story in brooklyn. three police officers fired on while patrolling in fort green. their unmarked car was peppered with bullets but the officers were not hurt. now they returned fire at least one suspect was hit in the leg has been arrested and is at beth israel medical center and we have a live update from the scene coming up at the top of the hour. here is video of a great rescue in one of the great lakes. the coast guard pulling a man and dog from a wrecked sail boat in lake superior. tuesday nights rescue in
wisconsin had to be done by helicopter. water was too shallow for a response boat. another person on the stranded boat swam to shore after falling into the water. the good news is everybody is is doing fine. and another rescue this one in texas, this man dangling under a bridge was performing maintenance work yesterday when he slipped. firefighters attached a pulley system to the man, threw a man hole on the bridge and he was pulled to safety after nearly an hour. >> that's tough work. >> it was a tough hour for him. >> you bet. 4:45. meteorologist bill evans with the exclusive accuweather forecast. >> we are going to have a lot of sunshine. suns up at 7:00 so we have a ways to go before sunrise but clear skies as we look from the empire state building all the way down to one world trade looking really good and down staten island good visibility about 22 miles. temperature 59 degrees humidity 72% winds are calm and pressure is steady right at 30.08. all of this points to very fair weather.

stations all due to ongoing maintenance as well. let's go out to our camera. i'll show you a look at the van wick. the van wick northbound moving slowly up and out toward q gardens with some construction wrapping up southbound at this point still moving okay no major problems heading down toward the jackie robinson and alternate side parking rules are in effect for today city wide. back over to you laurie, ken? >> thank you, debbie. 4:49. police in connecticut are hoping you can help them catch an alleged kidnapper. the victim was caught on camera jumping out of a moving car. the dramatic incident happened monday morning at bridgeport. a 17 year old girl was lured inside this gray toyota. after being assaulted the teen escaped by tumbling out of the moving car. the girl abducted as she walked to school. >> maybe because a man tried to get her in the car she wouldn't go in the first place but seeing that it's a woman it's strange because she still don't know who that person is. >> the suspect described as female in her 40s with black
hair and frequent els wearing a black leather jacket. the gray toyota missing, its rear bumper. anybody with information asked to call bridgeport police. president obama will sign legislation today that reforms part of his signature affordable care act. it's a rare case of republicans and democrats and congress working together to revamp the law. it was about to hit smaller businesses with hefty premium increases but the new law will greatly limit the number of businesses affected by the hike. california's governor jerry brown has signed landmark legislation to deal with climate change. half of the states electricity must come from renewable sources by the year 2030. the new law is expected to give a big boost to the sales of electrical cars but the new law does not say exactly how california will reach that 50% goal. an entire floor of the museum of modern art now being dedicated to a well known artist and his less well known pieces. this is one of the largest

cleared. over on the cross bronx west it's construction and let's go outside i'll show you more road work here the north bound van wick bumper to bumper traffic through q gardens with ongoing road work. alternate side in effect. back over to you. laurie ken? debbie thank you. 4:56. a woman received quite the scare at a cemetery of all places in queens when a headstone fell over on top of her. can you imagine? this happened inside mount lebanon cemetery yesterday. now the woman was trapped underneath the had headstone. the cemetery workers were able to pull her to safety. her injuries not considered serious. it's not clear what caused that headstone to tumble over. 4:56. a new report has the u.s. ranked first and last in terms of pre-obamacare health figures. commonwealth fund looked at healthcare spending by 13 nations before the affordable care act took effect. it found the u.s. spent $9,000 per person each year on
healthcare. the most of any country. the study also showed americans have the shortest life expectancy of any of the nations surveyed. an 800-pound man is living in his path pore's suv outside a home in rhode island after he got kicked out of a hospital. he was kicked out because he ordered pizza. a 33 year old man lost 20 pounds after staying in a hospital for 80 days but after he violated his care plan by ordering that pizza the hospital said you've got to go. hospital spokesman says they can't comment on a patient's treatment. 4:57. we're following breaking news in brooklyn where at least one suspect fired shots at officers inside now the officers returned gunfire and hit one suspect in the leg. we'll have an update from the scene. the new jersey turnpike is back open after a fiery crash closed that roadway for more than 12 hours. meteorologist bill evans
and pumpkin seeds. greek yogurt, packed full of goodness. good morning. that breaking news is in brooklyn where police say they shot a gunman who opened fire on them and it is still a very active scene right now. good morning i'm lori stokes. >> it's thursday, october 8. we head straight to that breaking story one suspect shot in the leg. the search is on for two more people. >> police say the wild shootout started when a gunman fired shots at officers in an unmarked car at fort green. eye witness news reporter rob nelson is live on the scene. rob? >> reporter: good morning laurie. really it was our story here you said a second ago still an active scene and the proof is right here behind me you can see cops several down here at the end of the street this investigation obviously still very active.
as you said one suspect is in custody. two others are still on the loose this morning after a late night shootout with police in which one of the suspects simply opened fire on three unmarked vehicle. all this began about 10:30 last night near park avenue and northport land avenue in the fort green section of brooklyn. the three cops, two officers and a lieutenant were in their unmarked car when they noticed the three suspects involved in some kind of dispute. now when the officers circled back and confronted the men one of the suspects simply opened fire. several bullets striking the officer's car and now the good news is that none of the officers were shot. they were able to return fire before all three suspects eventually fled on foot. as part of the investigation a large part of this neighborhood was simply shutdown several roads have been closed and remain closed at this hour. eventually police did recover a gun, a .45 caliber sar arms underneath a nissan suv in the area. they do believe that is the gun

with rubber necking and emergency activity. staten island expressway west at victory boulevard construction and the cross bronx westbound slowing down out toward the sheridan with overnight construction still wrapping up here as well. inbound george washington bridge moving smoothly. the overnight construction cleared no problems at the lincoln or the holland tunnel and now the bd f& m overnight track work cleared is so subway running on time and let's go out to our camera i'll show you a look at the north bound van wick still bumper to bumper up through q gardens that right lane. alternate side parking rules are in effect. back over to you laurie, ken? debbie thank you. one other note for new jersey commuters all lanes are now open on the new jersey turnpike where a tanker truck driver wassailed in a fiery crash. this new video in here to eye witness news shows the driver of the truck swerving overturning on to a guard rail bursting into flames happening just after 3:00 yesterday stopping traffic during the rush hour. investigators say the driver
was avoiding a car that stopped short when several mattresses and box springs fell from another truck. 5:04 and the arrest of an alleged cell phone thief is now the subject of an nypd internal investigation because of what showed up on a security camera. now this happened september 11 in a sunset park brooklyn. police surrounded the man wanted for stealing an iphone and they start to beat him. at some point, the robbery victim a paramedic joins in. the suspect is identified as his step father says the 21 year old lost a tooth and the officers and emt need to be punished. >> i understand people do crime but this does not allow police officers and other people just to hold one guy down and beat him up. >> he faces grand larceny and other charges.
right now no word whether the officer or emt are facing disciplinary action a second person is facing charge in the murder of a grandmother at her home in queens. 19-year-old michelle green is acused of killing 70 year old letta web, who was shot and killed back in march after answering her door early in the morning. 22 year old julian douglas arrested in april and charged in her murder. police say the violence may have been gang related. time is 5:06. president obama called the head of doctors without borders to apologize for a u.s. air strike on an afghan clinic that killed at least 22 people. the u.s. had already admitted the attack was a mistake. it happened saturday in the city and a spokesman for the president says the apology was heartfelt. >> the united states when we make a mistake, we're honest about it. we own up to it. we apologize. we're necessary, as the president did in this case and we implement the kinds of changes that make it less

one suspect was wounded in the leg and he under arrest but the search is on for two more people. we have live updates from the scene starting at 5:30. 5:12 now and dozens of employees at a pharmaceutical company in new jersey on alert this morning. get this health officials say a nurse reused a syringe while giving flu shots at a clinic in west windsor township. the health department saying the incident happened september 30 and officials say the risk for infection is actually rather low but those who received the flu should undergo testing for hepatitis b, hepatitis c, and hiv. the coast guard says it has ended its search for 33 missing crew members from a u.s. cargo ship. that sank last week during hurricane jouaquin. intensive air and sea search over tens of thousands of square miles turned up one unidentified body in a survival suit and heavily damaged life boat. they also found an empty life

breaking news in brooklyn shots fired at police officers in an unmarked police cruiser. those officers did return fire. the search now on for two people right now. good morning i'm ken are. >> i'm lori stokes. today is is thursday, october 8 and a third suspect is under arrest found at the hospital with a gun shot wound to the leg. eye witness news reporter rob nelson is live on the scene for us in fort green. rob? >> reporter: well good morning. very active investigation at the scene. take a look here behind me. this neighborhood is still swarming with cops at this hour. they know full well this could have ended far more tragically. all of this upfolded starting about 10:30 last night. two officers and a lieutenant in an unmarked car noticed three men involved in a dispute
land avenue and when they confronted the men one of the suspects started firing on the cops. thankfully the bullets did not strike any officers just that unmarked car. the cops are able to fire back but the suspects managed to escape. the neighborhood was immediately put on lockdown and police eventually recover a gun underneath a nissan suv. it is believed to be the same gun used in the incident police also located one of the suspects at beth israel medical center in manhattan where he checked himself in for a gun shot wound to the leg. an injury he suffered in the shootout however two more suspects do remain at large so this investigation has a few miles to go. now back here live i want to me. down here this section of park avenue remains close here in the fort green section and down that way if we zoom in a little bit you can still see the markings or shell casings on the ground several in fact. it's not confirmed but we do believe that is the vehicle under which the gun was found. the .45 caliber weapon was

found together in their apartment. eye witness news reporter story. >> reporter: ken, the discovery was actually made in the home behind me. investigators now trying to figure out exactly what happened here. if you take a look the discovery was made on the second floor. that's where that mother and child were found. there's a second floor apartment there. this is located on lincoln street. investigators trying to figure out what may have happened in the hours prior. police say the two were found unconscious yesterday at 6:00 in the evening. the woman who was in her 20s and her 5-year-old son were taken to christ hospital. after arriving they were both pronounced dead. the jersey city fire department tested the air quality in this apartment and so far, they say all tests came back negative for carbon monoxide. >> it's sad because that's my neighbor and it was very sad that's what happened. again,-- >> you don't know anybody who lives in that building?

his home on sherman avenue the night of september 25th. he died the next day. police have not released a motive for the attack. an nypd watchdog is substantiating an excessive force complaint filed by former tennis pro james blake. surveillance from september shows officer officers tackling blake outside a hotel after mistaking him for suspect. the civilian complaint review board says the take down was excessive. the officer will face an administrative trial. in a statement blake said i want to express my appreciation of the civilian complaint review board for the quick and thorough review of the incident. last night police union president pat lynch blasted that ruling saying it is no surprise the ccrb which continues to be nothing more than a cop hating branch of the new york civil liberties union would substantiate the use of force complaint in such a questionably public manner. happening today, in a former f did into y captain convicted of sexually molesting
