that is what's making news this is new york's number one news channel 7 eyewitness news with lori stokes and ken rosato, heather o'rourke with traffic, and bill evans with the exclusive accuweather forecast. now eyewitness news this morning. good morning, it's 4:30, and we're learning more about the heroic effort to save a young girl as a speeding car barreled toward her. that little girl's aunt pushed her out of the way and was hit by the car. >> caught on camera a frightening armed robbery in the bronx, and now police need your help finding the suspects. >> and it's been three years since the massacre at sandy hook elementary school. we're going to tell you how the community is marking this somber day. >> and a live look outside

morning commute. we're tracking more mild later tonight. >> good morning i'm lori stokes. >> thank you for joining us. i'm shirleen allicot in for ken rosato. today is monday december 14th. this morning there is a little drizzle. there is a fog. mid-december. 54 to start your day right here. we're looking at 50 around riverdale. queens 53. islip 55 out toward montauk. these numbers are way warm for the overnight hours. there's some reduced visibilities, newark down to 8/10 of a mile. 3/10 of a mile down the jersey shore. that's this warm air in place giving us drizzle and fog this morning. that will burn off. we've got cloudy skies. temperatures are still very mild. 63 this afternoon.

we'll talk about that and we're going to talk about maybe a thunderstorm later on tonight. all that plus the weekend. we're going to look ahead to maybe some colder weather finally coming. we have a problem on the belt parkway. we have an overturned vehicle going westbound near will have effort's boulevard. you have two lanes closed down as you go through that spot. long island railroad new timetables in effect for today. jfk air train is suspended until about 2 p.m. this afternoon. new jersey transit is doing okay. no major problems there. new jersey turnpike has a speed restriction between the delaware bridge getting up into 7a because of the fog. street cleaning rules are in effect. 4:32. a woman is fighting to survive this morning after shoving her young niece out of the path of a hit and run driver in queens. this morning we're also learning more about the driver who police say has several prior arrests.

kristin thorne is live now at jamaica hospital with more for us. >> reporter: 21-year-old urabia nelson is recovering here at jamaica hospital. she is in critical condition having suffered a severe head injury and a broken leg. this is the mustang allegedly being driven by 23-year-old denzel watson. police say watsons driving on beach 19 street in far rockaway when he hit nelson who was walking across the street with her 5-year-old niece. nelson pushed child out of the way so the child would not be hit by the car. watson who has seven prior arrests including possessing a stolen loaded gun, they say he may have run a red light. >> i was shocked. i was in awe because when you see that, you see a person do something like that, like somebody has no mercy and they don't care for life and they

person and the next place. not for nothing. itst just a green light, it's not that serious. >> reporter: police tracked down watson almost immediately following this incident. he's being charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious injuries and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. we're live outside jamaica hospital this morning. a teenager's in the hospital in serious condition after being hit by a car in new jersey. this happened in bayonne last night at the intersection of avenue c and west 5th street. the driver of the car remained on the scene. that accident is under investigation. 4:34, and new this morning, frightening video of an armed robbery in the bronx. now police need your help finding the suspects. take a look at the video we just received overnight. this happened saturday afternoon at an auto repair shop on stillwell avenue in morris park.

place and forced the two men into the back room. no word on any injuries. a teenager is recovering in the hospital this morning after he was shot in east harlem. police say the shooter was riding a dirt bike on 2nd avenue when he pulled out the weapon and shot at the 19-year- old. the teen was hit once and is expected to survive. police have not made any arrests. iten began as a routine traffic stop and ended with an suv crashing into a building on long island. the jeep rear-ended the police car and then another vehicle before careening off the road, rolling through a fence and into the building. the officer suffered minor injuries. the driver was arrested on drug charges. investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that

manhattan. the fbi says the third floor of a parking garage in chelsea over the weekend. no one was hurt. postal service says there was no mail in any of the trucks. today marks three years since the massacre at sandy hook elementary school. this is the first time it falls on a school day. a moment of silence will be held and middle and high school principals in newtown will discuss the day's significance during remarks over public address systems. parents at lower grade schools will be offering talking points on how to discuss the shootings with their children. flags will fly at staff in honor of the 20 children and six adults who were killed three years ago. a mother's group in manhattan commemorated the anniversary by calling for gun control. supporters marched through central park to end gun violence. participants say it's time for common sense solutions to

>> it's too many mother's and fathers added to this club no one wants to be a part of, and it's time because i don't feel like our children are safe nowhere, not at school, not at church, not in the movie theater. nowhere. >> governor cuomo is calling on president obama to release the federal no fly list so new york can enact restrictions of gun sales. a portion of 1st avenue showered by bricks last week is expected to open this morning. crews have been working all weekend to remove the remaining bricks from the building on east 64th street. 1st avenue between 61st and 64th street has been closed since the facade fell last monday. no one was hurt. you're never more than 7 minutes away from weather and traffic beginning with meteorologist bill evans and your accuweather forecast. >> here's a shot from our

lost manhattan to the fog. the fog will continue until about 9 or 10:00 burn off. be aware that visibilities are going to come and go this morning. the temperatures are warm. that's why we have the fog. 54 degrees. yesterday we had a record high of 67. we're going to be warming up again today with this warm air that is in place. what we'll see much of the day is this warm air that comes in and up and over. the front is back to our west. that will bring us rain that comes in for tonight. we're going to be looking at temperatures really warm here, 55 to 61, 62 by the time we get into the afternoon, the rain comes in tonight. weather and traffic together every 7 minutes. when they change the time tibbles i had the worst time with timetables, especially the 12s. you know, 12 times 11, 12 times 10. >> are you referring to the train timetables. >> yes i am.

let's go here to a webcam and here you want to use caution. turnpike. this is right near the garden state parkway. you can see that fog. i can tell you that the new jersey turnpike speed delaware memorial bridge and visibility. then you have this, belt parkway west right near will have effort's boulevard. the new timetables go into effect for long island railroad. jfk air train is suspended because of maintenance. they have shuttle bused in. it's suspended until 2 p.m. new jersey transit doing okay. subway service on or close to schedule. george washington bridge not a bad ride for you at all. lincoln and holland you have construction there. going over here as you travel on to the bayonne bridge, that is closed both ways until 5 a.m. and of course it's because of ongoing construction. they do this every single day.

homes and trees and there is one report of a train being knocked off its tracks. the severe weather also brought heavy rains and flash floods. despite all the damage no one was hurt. >> fortunately, wow. it is 4:43. let's check in with meteorologist bill evans. >> here's our camera on the roof looking across the park here this morning. we have some terribly low visibilities here. we're going to be looking at visibilities that are about 3/10 of a mile to a mile in some spots. this is going to come and go through the day today. as we see the lights are on at wollman rink here. what we have is a really mild morning outside with this warm air surging up and over. today we're looking at 54 degrees, the humidity 77%. the winds are east at 7. the pressure 30.14 and falling. yesterday's high broke the

yesterday we were at 67. 52 kingston and poughkeepsie. 50 around carmel. all these numbers are way warm. we should be about 33 in the park to 23 here north and west to 20 well north and west. it is a mild morning once again and going to be pretty much the whole week is going to be pretty much mild dominated by this wind that comes out of the south here. a light to southerly wind that pumps up mile visibility in newark. this will come and go. 3/10 of a mile down the parkway. a mile 7, southern state, the l.i.e., all that's a possible fog situation in suffolk county. we have this dense fog advisory this morning. as you'll see for northwest new jersey, central southern new jersey and today we're going to be watching this fog. then you see it's going to be cloudy. we have a lot of clouds back to the ohio valley. that will spread eastward today. as that spreads eastward we find ourselves with a batch of rain off to our west.

our way for this evening and tonight. around chicago works through the ohio valley and gets here late in the day. our futurecast shows just that. mild temperatures getting into the 60s this afternoon. this rain starts to come in west of the city around sunset which is 4:30, and then sweeps through the area. morning fog and cloudy and warm, and rain late in the day. we're at 63 degrees. that's way warm for this hour of the day and for the rest of the day much of this week we'll be looking at temperatures tonight. drop down into the mid-50s. there will probably be a rumble of thunder. then we're going to be looking at still warm weather as we go into the rest of the week. temperatures in the 50s to around 60 degrees as we go into the seven-day forecast, you'll see the time we get to thursday another shot at rain. the temperature actually might get to 60. that would actually break another record high on thursday. by the time we get to friday and saturday and sunday, notice

it's west near leffert's boulevard, debris spill being cleaned up because of that overturned vehicle. we have alternate side of the street rules in effect for today. a controversial and deadly shooting involving law enforcement is raising questions in california. take a look at this video. it shows the end of a confrontation between los angeles county sheriff's deputies and nicholas robertson. robertson who is black died saturday morning. two deputies fired 33 shots after investigators say robertson refused to drop his gun. >> the deputies have been reassigned from will remain so until we determine the facts and complete our assessment of this incident. >> the deputies continued firing after robertson was on the ground and crawling away from them. investigators say he never released the gun in his hand. witnesses say robertson had fired rounds into a car wash and a gas station before

and police shot and killed a gunman at a wal-mart in pennsylvania. police responded to reports of a man aiming a gun at customers saturday night. officers say the man pointed his gun at them after refusing orders to drop his weapon. that prompted police to open fire shooting the man in the chest. no one else at the wal-mart was hurt by some customers say they now fear for their safety. >> i won't even come here by myself. i always and my husband to go with me because i'm so scared. now there's a shooter? i'll never come here alone ever. >> the gunman has been identified as 20-year-old andrew todd. that wal-mart has since reopened. and the top online retailer will no longer sell one brand of the hottest holiday toy of the season. amazon is dropping all swagway hoverboard listings. that's the same brand of

being charged inside a home last week. the concern now over the hoverboard's lithium ion batteries has prompted several airlines to ban the boards. grinches are on the loose after destroying a massive christmas display in front of a home in new jersey. here is new video this morning of the thieves creeping around in the front yard of the property, then snatching lights and running away with decorations. the homeowner says he's not letting it ruin his holiday. eyewitness news reporter mallory hoff spoke with him. >> an elaborate display of christmas lights designed to spread holiday cheer was met by thieves. >> i can't just go to the store today and buy a lot of this stuff that's been collected over the years. >> shane's 68,000 lights and dozens of figures have long been a tradition outside his monmouth county new jersey home. also outside the home, surveillance video cameras

snatched up by three christmas bandits with grinch-like tendencies. one man quickly finds he's no match for this candy cane. it's tethered to the ground and wired to a power supply. then he appears to get spooked and he makes a run for it. the sticky fingers make their way to the corner of the property. >> one guy grabs the inflatable, and then this guy grabs the snowman. >> frosty didn't have a say in the matter. >> mainly contained to that corner is there all the stolen items were worth around $1000. mccary says the loss isn't his alone. >> i enjoyed when i was younger driving around looking at the houses and how they're lit up. each year i just kind of added more stuff. >> it's that holiday cheer that can't be stolen, but when the thieves drove off, one would watching. >> there's a lot of time and effort put into it.

sha? abc7 and your tri-state ford dealers thank you for helping protect our children. a woman's wild tantrum was caught on camera at a florida dmv office. a florida state trooper was trying to get a woman to leave peacefully after she got upset. she fought back as you see here. the officer took her to the ground. the woman spent several minutes kicking and screaming before he got her into handcuffs. she is charged with resisting arrest. >> what is that about. >> yeah. scary.

head to our maps. we do have some police activity. i was looking at the camera along the garden state parkway, the bell parkway going west that's an overturned vehicle being cleared. long island railroad new timetables don't forget to pick it up. air trains suspended until 2 p.m. they're doing some maintenance but have some shuttle buses for you. if you're flying today not a bad idea to get in touch with your individual carrier. lori over to you. thank you. 4:56. new this morning, a suspect in a long island murder that took place nearly seven years ago is heading to court. daniel greenspan is set to be arraigned in suffolk county charged with the shooting death of a man in west babylon in january of 2009. greenspan was arrested yesterday in manhattan. another man is already serving a ten-year sentence. greenspan's girlfriend is

new concerns over drones coming dangerously close to planes. the airports in the newark metropolitan area have the highest number of close encounters between drones and planes. 327 close encounters at u.s. and september 2015. 86 of those were in this area. close encounter was defined as an event where drones presented some level of hazard to manned aircraft. and we are closing in on 5:00, and just ahead on eyewitness news this morning, it has been three years since the massacre at sandy hook elementary school. this morning we'll tell you the school is marking this somber day. >> plus details on the growing debate over gun control. >> and watch out for fog during the morning commute. it's going to be another mild day. meteorologist bill evans says he's watching rain headed our way.

newtown will note the day's significance and remarks over -- parents at lower grade schools will be offered talking points on how to discuss the shootings with their children. flags will fly at half-staff in honor of the 20 children and six adults who were killed three years ago. there is a renewed emphasis on gun control with today's remembrances. eyewitness news reporter dray clark has details. >> connecticut governor malloy is hoping to start a national trend. malloy recently announced he would sign an executive order banning people on the federal terrorism watch list from buying guns and ammunition in his state. >> if you cannot fly due to being on a government watch list you should not be able to purchase a firearm while on that watch list as well. this is basic common sense. the american people get it. >> new york governor andrew cuomo also favors the proposed

going the wrong way when his car hit another car on interstate 684 just before 6 yesterday morning. the driver 64-year-old elena lopez was pronounced dead at the scene. tilkson and his passenger were treated for their injuries. he is charged with criminally negligent homicide. a massage therapist is accused of sexually assaulting. he inappropriately touched a woman while giving her a massage at elements massage in rockville center. garcia is charged with forcible touching and sex abuse. 5:05 in the race for president the next republican debate is tomorrow. new jersey governor chris christie will be back on the main stage. governor christie had been dropped to the under party event for the last debate. he is one of nine republican presidential candidates to qualify for the main debate in las vegas.

there's been a shift in the top in the key state of iowa. the des moines register bloomberg poll has ted cruz now surging to the lead at 31% ahead of donald trump by 10 points. and carson is in third with 13% and marco rubio is 4th at 10%. trump denounced the poll numbers and is taking aim at his chief rival cruz. >> i don't think he's qualified to be president. you can't walk into the senate and scream and call people liars and not be able to get along with people. he'll never get anything done and that's the problem with ted. >> the other big story, dr. ben carson's drop in the polls. he's also brushed off the numbers saying they go up and down. stay with eyewitness news and abc news for updates. good morning picks up our coverage with a live report from washington beginning at

happening today president obama makes a rare visit to the pentagon. mr. obama heads to the defense department headquarters to meet with national security advisors. at the top of the agenda is the nation's military strategy to fight the islamic state. the white house has described the meeting as more of an update. it comes amid policy showing most americans aren't happy with the way the president handling terrorism. let's take a look outside. you see the fog right there from our camera in brooklyn looking over and across from the watchtower building down toward wall street, lower manhattan. going to be a morning where we start out with cloud and fog. maybe a little drizzle with that. you need the jacket, the light raincoat and the temperatures have been in the low and mid- 50s around the five boroughs. 54 in central park. cloudy skies, east wind coming

he resigned days after parishioners sued him claiming he stole nearly $1 million from st. francis and his prior church on roosevelt island. one woman says proving kelly used the money for a home in new jersey after boyfriend. they're terrible. when i read them about three months ago it was saying i have photographs, i have evidence. >> i'm so disgusted because i've heard him over and over more generous. >> the archdiocese of new york was also named in the lawsuit. the investigation has yet to detect signs of embezzlement. happening today, mayor bill de blasio is ready to get back to work after a successful surgery to repair a hernia. the 54-year-old is doing well. mayor de blasio was discharged on saturday. city hall reps say the mayor

told him it was time to deal with the issue before it got worse. >> it's 5:12. let's check in with bill evans and your accuweather forecast. >> let's take a look outside. we see from our cameras the low visibility from the clouds and fog that are right at -- really almost right at the surface here. this could come down a little more this morning and drop the visibilities across much of, you know, new jersey and new york and connecticut. we're looking at low visibilities and fog this morning. it's another warm air with an easterly wind we have a high humidity. we've got the pressure falling a little bit. that will continue to fall because a cold front is approaching from will get here later on this evening. yesterday's high 67. thus the asterisk. the normal high is 43 degrees. cloudy but still mild today. we'll have rain tonight. sun returns tomorrow. it will still be mild. rain returns on thursday. and we'll have these warm

focal point for detectives any. right now police here on the scene are not really answering any questions, referring all questions to the bergen county prosecutor's office who just arrived here on the scene. we're still trying to make sense of what happened here. we do know just after 3:30 morning we're told that a woman in her 40s was shot and then rushed to hackensack university medical center. not exactly sure of the circumstances that led up to you can see a number of detectives here on the scene going over what seems to be a large crime scene here. where this area they're focused on situated next to a car area. no witnesses coming forward with any information. we're still waiting to hear from the police to get more details on how this all happened, and right now we have no word on the condition of that woman in her 40s. again, right now we know a woman in her 40s shot this

being driven by 23-year-old denzel watson. police say watson was driving on beach 19th street in far rockaway yesterday when he hit nelson who was walking across niece. witnesses say nelson pushed the child out of the way so the car. nelson was hit. witnesses tell us that watson who has seven prior arrests including being arrested for possessing a stolen loaded gun, they say watson may have run a red light. >> i was shocked. i was in awe because when you see that, you see a person that do something like that, like somebody has no mercy, and they don't care for life, and they just care to get to the next person or get to the next place. it's just a green light. it's not that serious. >> police tracked down watson almost immediately following this incident. he's being charged with leaving the scene of an accident with a serious injury and aggravated

we're live outside jamaica hospital this morning. i'm kristin thorne channel 7 eyewitness news. >> kristin thank you. new this morning, a suspect in a long island murder that took place nearly seven years ago heads to court. daniel greenspan is set to be arraigned in suffolk county. he is charged in the shooting death of a man in west babylon in january of 2009. greenspan was arrested yesterday in manhattan. another man is already serving a ten-year sentence. greenspan's girlfriend is awaiting trial. also new this morning, frightening video of an armed robbery in the bronx. now police need your help to find the suspects. here's the video that we received just a few hours ago. two armed men burst into an auto body shop on stillwell avenue in morris park and forced whoa men into a back room. this happened saturday afternoon in morris park. the gunmen got away with $2000. no word on any injuries. 5:36. a portion of 1st avenue is

after it was closed off due to falling bricks for a week. crews worked all weekend to remove the remaining bricks from the building on east 64th street. 1st avenue between 64th and 64th street has been closed since the facade fell last monday. investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that damaged six postal trucks in manhattan. the fdny says it started on the third floor of a parking garage in chelsea over the weekend. firefighters got the fire under control at about midnight on saturday. no one was hurt. at this time the postal service of the trucks. new jersey hunters are bagging a bear. state officials announced a second hunt will take place thiscoming wednesday through sunday. they say the number of bears harvested during the six-day hunt that ended over the

that's going to be our weather pattern through christmas. lows coming from the southwest, cutting into the great lakes, rain coming with that. when the storm system itself goes to the west we get the warm air and rain to the front. notice down here around the big bend of texas these lows are coming up with the el nino keeps mild air feeding in. every now and then we're going to get a chilly shot. we should get one coming up this weekend. friday the front's going to move through. we'll get cooler air coming in here for saturday and sunday that will be closer to normal. it actually will feel cold considering today we're looking at 64 around the park. rain overnight tonight. this pushes through the area. we could have maybe even a rumble of thunder overnight, and then the sun's going to come back out tomorrow. after school today it's still cloudy. low 60s today. rain will be developing to the west. about 5, 6 in western new jersey and gets 6, 7 in the city.

dealers thank you for helping protect our children. in the last hour we received this new picture of the man who police say shot a teenager while riding a dirt bike. this happened on 2nd avenue in east harlem on sunday. the 19-year-old victim was shot once and is expected to survive. if you have any information you're asked to call police. now on to a developing story in a controversial and deadly shooting involving law enforcement is raising questions in california. take a look at this video. it shows the end of a confrontation between los angeles county sheriff's deputies and nicholas robertson. robertson died saturday morning. two deputies fired 33 shots after investigators say robertson refused to drop a gun. >> the deputies involved have been reassigned from field duty and they'll remain so until we determine the facts and complete our assessment of this incident. >> the family members say deputies continued firing after robertson was on the ground and crawling away from them.

released the gun in his hand. witnesses also say robertson had fired rounds into a car wash and a gas station before deputies arrived. the fbi says it will analyze items recovered from a san bernardino lake as it looks for more clues in the mass shooting. the search of the lake wrapped up late saturday. agents hoped to find a computer hard drive and anything else linked to the husband and wife behind the attack that killed 14 people. the fbi has not said whether the recovered items are related to the investigation. one law enforcement official wants more people to arm themselves. sheriff paul babil of pi nell county arizona wants people to learn more about gun safety and be prepared to defend themselves. babo says he needs help from everyday people to fight the bad guys. >> be armed to protect yourself, protect your family
