players in the nypd, the current police commissioner and his predecessor who do not see eye to eye on how the department reports violent crimes. we are live at one police plaza in lower manhattan with new information. >> reporter: police commissioner bill bratton and former commissioner ray kelly are two outspoken men and on this issue, neither side is back down. police commissioner bratton says the numbers don't lie, they reflect the hard work of the men and women of his department but commissioner kelly says he has intel from the inside suggesting that bratton and his team are manipulating the numbers to make themselves and the mayor look good. feud started. >> there appears to be an effort to reduce the number of >> it's amazing the comments selling a book. >> reporter: and now the nypd is fighting back against former police commissioner ray kelly's claims that the department has

crimes the make the city appear safer. >> those comments were outrageous. my cops work hard, very hard to the reduce gun violence in the city. >> i'm not going to point fingers. maybe you will want to do an investigation of this. >> reporter: late last night the, the nypd put out a fact sheet. chief among the information, the department insisted it has not changed the way it records shooting numbers. the nypd points out its crime reporting manual date back to at least april 2012, 20 months before the end of kelly's second tenure as commissioner. here's what doesn't count as a shooting under nypd guideline, justified police-involved shootings, self-inflicted wounds, justified shooting, for example, a licensed gun owner shoots a robber, shootings where the justification is pending, and shootings where a victim is grazed but there's no blood. as for homicide, through monday, there had been a total

2014 and those by gunfire are up 22%. however, the department points out this year shooting numbers are at record lows. now ray kelly says he was so surprised that police commissioner bill bratton had such a strong reaction to the comments and took them so personal. for his part, commissioner bratton says ray kelly should provide proof that he is manipulating the number, otherwise commissioner kelly should be be quiet and keep it moving. we're live from one police eyewitness news. >> thank you. in the race for president, former new york governor george pataki has suspended his campaign. >> well tonight is the end of my journey for the white house president. i'm confident we can elect the right person. >> this ad started airing last night on stations in early primary states. he never made to it the main rubble debate stage and never really had a surge in poll numbers and had trouble raising

it was an emotional remembrance in new jersey young police officer who was killed on the job one year ago. a vigil was held last night for the cliffside park police officer at the site of where he was struck by a car last december. the 22-year-old was promoted posthumously from a officer to a full-time officer. his mother says she is grateful her son has not been forgotten. >> it blows me away that people cared enough to be out here for steven and his family. very happy. >> the driver who hit the officer pleaded guilty to careless driving and failure to yield. she got points on her license and a $378 fine. time now is 6:06. the world of country music hanging on to hopes and prayers as the search resumes for

rescuers searched along a 38- mile long lake in nobody oklahoma. the singer -- lake in oklahoma. the singer vanished while duck hunting on sunday. he is the lead singer of country rock band backroad anthem. the search was suspended last night due to the darkness. the former "glee" star is in major legal trouble. he is accused of possessing child pornography. he was arrested yesterday at his home in los angeles. he is due in court january 22nd. he is best known for playing noah puckerman on the now canceled "glee" tv show. you're never more than 7 minutes away from weather and traffic. meteorologist bill evans and the exclusive accuweather forecast. >> well, here we go, we take a look toward 59 street and 5th avenue, looking like a great morning. just low cloud cover here. you don't need the rain gear, just a jacket, coat, that kind of thing. 41 degrees in the park and the

we want to show you pictures of three suspects wanted in the knife point robbery of a cab driver. it happened this month in bronx. detectives say the suspects asked him to take them to a home. when they got to the home, the guy behind the driver put a knife to his neck and the others took the victim's cash. the driver is okay. well, if you received new martha stewart cookware for christmas, you will want to check it out because macy's is recalling more than 120,000 frying pans. the consumer product safety commission says that the covers on the 8 and 10-inch pans can pop off and fly across your kitchen. the commission also says at least three people have been injured. if you have have the frying pans, you should return them to macy's and you will get credit. >> wow. it's time to check the exclusive accuweather forecast. >> and let's check in with meteorologist bill evans. >> well, good morning. we are out here on the upper west side. let's go. let's get it on! here's what's happening. the day where we start out two

on the money, the dow jones industrial average starts the day up 119 points. the nasdaq composite and s&p 500 also begin 1% higher. right now, futures are pointing to a lower open. oversea, japan's nikkei average closed up slightly. happening today, the ferris wheel rides come to a screeching halt in times square. the retailer shutting down its doors for good at the flagship location. the company is leaving the 110,000 square foot home and its 60-foot high ferris wheel due to financial reasons. they say they are looking for another location in manhattan. new york governor andrew cuomo has announced the state will start accepting applications tomorrow for the student loan forgiveness program. under the program, recent college graduates will have up to two years of payments paid on their behalf.

from the scene of a mine collapse in china. they have been trapped for five days under the rubble in eastern china. the miners joined 11 others who were rescued previously. at least one worker was killed and nine others are still missing. the new york city council speaker doesn't usually weigh in on sports but this morning, she is blasting the yankees for signing a pitcher who was being investigated for domestic violence. she says that the yankees should reconsider their trade for the cincinnati red's closer. his girlfriend says he choked her but police in florida say there was not enough evidence to charge him. the yankee's gm defends the trade and notes that his price dropped. and when the giants play their season finale on sunday against philadelphia, the eagles will be dealing with some head coaching turmoil. chip kelly he had a winning record and one

and an accident just cleared on 495 but volume approaching the lincoln. and watch for volume tonnelle southbound avenue into jersey city. alternate side of the street parking rules are in effect city-wide. >> thank you. today friends, family and fellow service members will offer a final farewell to an nypd detective killed in afghanistan. joseph lemm was a sergeant on patrol with the national guard when he and five other americans including another york national guardsman were killed by a taliban suicide bomber. kala rama live in manhattan. >> reporter: ken, this morning, they're expecting thousands to show up here at st. patrick's cathedral. you can see the barricades are already up. thousands to pay their respects to nypd detective and air national guard sergeant joseph lemm. he was fondly known as superman by his family and friends and his brothers in blue at the nypd and air national guard.

hundreds of mourners paid their respects at st. anthony's church in lemm's adopted home. lemm leaves behind his wife, christine, his daughter and 4- year-old son. >> very sad but at the same time, appreciating the united states that we live here and that we have soldiers out there proteching us. >> reporter: the procession will start in west harrison at 9:00 a.m. before making their way to st. patrick's cathedral and the burial will take place this afternoon in hawthorne. that will be this afternoon. live at st. patrick's kala rama, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you very much. and the wake for staff sergeant louis beyonce that casa, the other new yorker who died in the attack -- louis bonacasa will be saturday. he will be buried at the national cemetery. 6:33.

man accused of murdering his own father nassau county. police arrested the 24-year-old jordan johnson in the death of his father russell johnson. the elder johnson was found with multiple stab wounds after police say an argument with his son turned violent. officers found his father barely clinging to life. he did die a short time later at the hospital. jordan johnson is now charged with second degree murder and he is expected to face a judge today. two postal workers are accused of disturbing charges. one confessed to stealing nearly 50,000 gift cards amounting to a thousand dollars from mail that was supposed to be delivered. and another postal worker is accused of dumping nearly a thousand pieces of partially opened mail in queens. when confronted, he told police he was simply overwhelmed by the quantity of mail he was responsible for delivering. if convicted, both men could face up to five years in prison. a new york city man who had been missing for six weeks has been found dead.

body of the 23-year-old in new jersey rather on christmas day. he was last seen leaving an upper manhattan nightclub around 5:00 a.m. november 4th. the cause of death has not been released. well the passenger who flew through the front window of a bus in an accident near the lincoln tunnel is out of the hospital. the 68-year-old man is recovering from a broken shoulder and head injury. he was standing up on a private bus when he went flying through the windshield yesterday as it abruptly stopped at a traffic light. the driver of the bus insists that he was not speeding. >> how fast could i be going? i was just coming to -- i mean, i came to the stop so i wasn't going at any, you know, fast speed or anything like that. i just -- he was standing up and he went through the windshield. >> well the victim landed on the street. that bus makes regular round- trips between baltimore and new york. 6:35.

the, inaa is investigating a botched landing that could have ended in disaster. officials say an alaska airlines passenger plane from chicago to seattle landed on an active taxiway earlier this month at seattle's sea-tac airport. the pilot apparently thought it was one of the airport's runways. it's unclear why the crew failed to recognize the

runway verses the taxiway. 6:41. if quitting smoking is on the new year's resolution list, one more reason not to light up. pets liking in a smoking environment have a higher risk of developing health problems. some issues include cancer and weight gain. researchers found smoking outdoors could reduce your pet's exposure but they say quitting completely is the best option. it. happening today, ball. the nearly 12,000-pound sphere will be raised to the top of one times square at noon, 36 hours before it rings in 2016. the ball drop tradition began on new year's eve in 1907. it will officially begin the one-minute fall down the 130- foot pole at 11:59 tomorrow night. and meantime, mayor de blasio saying that times square will be one of the safest places in

more than a million people are expected to be there along with 5,000 police officers. it's part of what the nypd is calling the tightest security ever. hundreds of officers will be armed with long guns. and also enhanced video surveillance will give police a better eye on times square. and each new year's eve party goer will be screened by hand at least twice. strong counterterrorism presence will be in place as a precaution. >> it's iconic and an example of new york city at its best and the eyes of the world will be on us. well, we will be prepared. the nypd has done extraordinary work preparing for this event. >> and as usual, no backpack, no duffel bags and no alcohol will be allowed in times square on new year's eve. how about this for a new year's eve celebration, the olive garden is offering unlimited bread sticks and a
