this morning a truck driver is recovering after a terrifying accident. his tractor trailer careened off the side of the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel yesterday afternoon, and it is still in the water this morning. police still have not released the driver's name. that could happen sometime today. officers say traffic citations are pending in the accident. let's take a closer look at the accident from a view only chopper 10 can show you. the driver plunged into the water around mile post 14 on the southbound side of the bridge. police say he was trying to pass another, slower-moving tractor- trailer, and lost control. officials say the man was

he was in 49-degree water for about an hour before emergency crews pulled him to safety. chopper 10 was there as emergency crews put the driver on a stretcher. then nightingale flew him to the hospital. police say he has serious injuries to his head, arm, and chest, but he is expected to recover. the tractor trailer that's now sitting in the chesapeake bay is owned by "n-y-k line" - the largest marine transporter in japan. before the accident the tractor-trailer was logged as empty, but when it crashed it was filled with soy beans. the company's records showed it was supposed to leave norfolk next week on a ship headed to singapore. for a closer look at chopper 10 video of the crash and pictures, just head to wavy-dot-com. it's an interview you'll only see on 10 - a woman grieves after police say a man murdered her sister. find the person who shot and killed her sister. newport news police say 25-year-old anthony smith junior shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, 25-year-old dashanika sherrod in her bedroom monday. her family says the two recently broke up. and the day after christmas, she took out a restraining order. 07:53 he kicked the door in. and of course everybody was startled. he looked my mom in the face and he walked straight into the room. he shot her one time. and then he, you know... he shot her one time and then my mom ran in the room and that's when he shot her two more times and she screamed, and he looked at her. and she went to get the baby, and he ran out the house. 08:28 we put a link on wavy-dot-com if you'd

investigators say a former teacher on the outer banks had an inappropriate relationship with a student. prosecutors say 27-year-old ryan garrott taught at manteo high school. the d-a says the victim is an 18-year- old female student. north carolina state code states: if a teacher is at least 4 years older, and at the same school, it's a felony. prosecutors say garrott is currently out of the country. they will set a court date after he's served. someone broke into more than a dozen vehicles at a senior community. chesapeake police say it happened sometime sunday night at the chesapeake crossing apartment complex. residents say they had to shell out hundreds of dollars for repairs. edwina daniels c0041 24:25 " i had gospel tapes in my car they didnt want those. all my tapes were on the seat, into the other side." 24:33 10 on your side reached out to apartment management to see if they have any new security measures. we will let

hundreds of local macy's workers are waiting to learn if they'll be out of a job. 10 on your side learned, three stores in hampton roads are closing. they are the military circle store in norfolk, the chesapeake square store in chesapeake, and the peninsula town center store in hampton. this will affect about 275 local workers. in all, 40 stores nationwide will close. store executives say about half of the workers positions. the store says it had disappointing sales in 2015. today michigan's governor will meet with the flint city mayor to discuss a serious water issue. earlier this week, the governor issued a state of emergency for flint because of its toxic water. the water was contaminated with dangerous levels of lead, and it's poisoning children in the community. the issue started back in 20-14 when the city switched from detroit's water supply to the flint river. it was all to save money. it has since switched back to detroit's water supply.

study shows lead levels in children have doubled. new this morning , a police standoff in georgia that lasted about 20-hours, ended when a man shot a two-year-old boy and then turned the gun on himself. both later died at the hospital. the standoff started yesterday afternoon when the two-year-old's mother says her live-in boyfriend threatened to kill everyone inside their home. the mother's teenage son escaped and called 9-1-1. when officers got there, the man, mother, and two-year-old were holed up inside a bedroom. that standoff is less than 20 miles away from about as breaking news on tuesday. in this incident, a man held a woman and 11 children hostage in a motel for about five hours. when swat entered the room, the man stabbed himself in the neck. at last check, he was in the hospital in critical condition. new this morning, alabama's chief supreme court justice is telling judges

on same-sex marriage. justice roy moore sent a message reminding them the directive to refuse licenses to same-sex couples is still in place. roy moore/alabama chief justice "a court that enters an order, it must be obeyed until that order is removed" the american civil liberties union of alabama said justice moore's order was silly. it also said the order would not change the fact that most alabama judges are issuing same-sex marriage licenses. happening today, noaa plans to release its annual report on extreme weather events. climate experts will discuss the major storms of 2015. the agency is expected to announce which events in the u-s caused losses of more than 1-billion dollars. the detailed financial date on each of those events will come out later in the year. we're on your side with breaking traffic news this morning. let's get right to jen lewis with all the details.

alert this morning. they say someone is cutting off horse tails. bruce and vickie tompkins say a thief took the hair from two of their horses. one was a miniature horse who's tail used to go down the ground. the other lost about 2-feet of its tail. the tompkins are outraged. they say it feels like someone robbed their home. :24 - :37 bruce tompkins, and the tails are. to see them chopped off like this, it takes them so long to grow back." so why would someone do this? for the money. the tompkins did some research and found a pound of horse hair sells for about 400-dollars. speaking of animals, police in western massachusetts have a real-life lassie on their hands. these two scottish terriers have been friends for years. when one of them fell down a 30 foot embankment, the other dog ran to get help from a police officer. :32 - 42 runs 10

the robber had was armed. he demanded money from one of the clerks, then ran off before police could catch him. the second happened about 25 minutes later at the 7-eleven on colonial avenue and princess anne road. that's in ghent, just a couple miles away from the first robbery. police say the suspect was also armed and got away with money before police arrived. police tell us the third armed robbery that happened on chesapeake boulevard just before 10:00 last night, was unsuccessful. a 10 on your side viewer sent us this picture from the scene. police say the suspect barged into the store, but left before getting money. police have not confirmed if the three crimes are connected. no one was hurt in any of them. overnight, police gave us this description of one suspect. witnesses say he was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and khaki pants. they say he was also wearing a back-back. call the crime line if you know anything about these robberies. last night's attempted robbery at the chesapeake boulevard 7-11 is the same store where a

yesterday morning. 10 on your side obtained this surveillance video of the incident. you're seeing the moments leading up to the actual shooting. another employee at the store told us the 23-year-old clerk is out of the hospital. the suspect got away with about 50 dollars cash. its not just norfolk. 7-elevens all over hampton roads seem to be easy pickings for robbers. so why are they targets? we posed that question to a local police detective. sot/detective misty holley/portsmouth police they do a lot of advertising on their windows, on their stores. :44 so that advertising that you see on the windows is prohibiting the employees from seeing outside and maybe seeing people who are pumping gas or walking past from seeing inside the building. :55 so it's kind of like a cover for a would-be robber. the would-be robber can also walk up inside, if they're casing the store. police say employees and customers have to be

my husband is innocent and i'm standing by him 100%. mcclain was due in court yesterday. the judge moved the case until late february. police in hampton are trying to find out what happened to two people found dead in a home. they say they got a call for a welfare check at a house on charolais run, and found a man and woman dead inside. a man who lives nearby told us, he's related by marriage to the man in the home. animal control officers removed several cats from the house. new this morning, we're about to show you incredible video of survival. a boy and his parents jumped from the fourth apartment building in quebec yesterday. and it was all caught on video. you can see the flames pouring out of this upper window. a neighbor recorded as the boy dangled from his father's arms before the man dropped his son to the ground. firefighters caught the boy. then the father and mother jumped, and landed in the snow. all three went to the hospital and should be okay. it took crews about 2

under control. investigators are still looking into how it started. the owners of a chipotle restaurant got a grand jury subpoena ordering the company to hand over all documents related to the norovirus outbreak that sickened dozens of people last year. that outbreak started at a restaurant in simi valley, california. several employees got sick and spread it to dozens of customers. the u-s attorney's office in central california and the food & drug administration are handling the investigation. we continue to follow breaking traffic news this morning. jen lewis is monitoring several back ups.
