the fate of former governor bob mcdonnell will be in the hands of the u-s supreme court today. for the frst time since a jury convicted mcdonnell on 11 federal corruption counts, the high court may consider hearing his corruption appeal. rico bush has more on what's happening today. rico, walk us through what's next for the former governor? brandi, don, today is the first conference day for the high court. justices are scheduled to sit down and review what cases to hear or deny. if they agree to put the former governor's corruption case on the docket, oral arguments could start before june. if the court denies mcdonnell's petition, he will be forced to go to prison to serve out his two-year sentence. in september 20-14, a federal jury found mcdonnell guilty of corruption. jurors found the former governor and his wife maureen, traded political

loans from a wealthy businessman for special treatment. since his conviction, his legal team has appealed the verdict at every stage and exhausted all other legal options. the high court now has the final say on the matter. mcdonnell's defense team believes federal jurors convicted the former governor on a broad definition of corruption and wants the justices to overturn his conviction. it'll take at least four votes to hear his case. and on monday, we could find out if the high court will take up mcdonnell's appeal. rico bush, 10 on your side. happening today, the u-s-n-s kanawha will leave hampton roads today for a 6 month deployment. the kanawha is one of the navy's replenishment oilers. it provides fuel for locally-based military ships and jets at sea. the kanawha was supposed to leave naval station norfolk on wednesday, but the navy changed the departure date because of weather. it's crewed by civil service mariners. happening today the

is expected in court to hear the formal charges against her. investigators say tonya couch helped her son ethan escape the country. she arrived at a north texas jail yesterday after police arrested her in mexico last week. they're holding her on a one-million dollars bond. ethan is still in a holding facility in mexico city. investigators believe he violated his probation after he drove drunk and killed people in 20-13. he's been called the affluenza teen because his lawyer argued he was too rich to know the consequences of his actions. also happening today, the white house is sending national security officials to silcon valley. they will meet with top companies in the tech industry about how to disrupt isis and other terrorist groups. some officials expected in today's meeting are attorney general loretta lynch, f-b-i director james comey, and national intelligence director james clapper. also happening today, a

stocks. despite the gain, people will still be keeping a close eye on the world market. reuters reports the gain is unlikely to improve sentiment in the european markets. china's stock market sank about 7 percent thursday. the country's currency fell to its lowest level against the dollar in almost 5 years. trading was automatically suspended. the shutdown set off a slump in other stocks across the globe. so far, japan's market is up. wall street opens at 9:30 this morning. right now, wildfires in australia are burning out of control. take a look at this incredible video from the western part of the country. firefighters down under say at least 3 people are unaccounted for. more than 100 homes have been destroyed. the fires have burned more than 125- thousand acres of woods and farmland. the string of convenience store robberies continues. this time a clerk is stabbed and the robber is still on the loose. ahead, what clues

for most of the week we've been telling you about several armed robberies at convenience stores. and now virginia beach police are searching for a suspect. they say the robber stabbed a worker at a citgo station on diamond springs road yesterday afternoon, and then took off with almost 250-dollars in cash. this is the second time in a week the store was robbed. police are looking to see if the two crimes are connected. customers are now starting to think differently about convenience stores. melissa reid, customer :16 - :24 "when you just jeopardy. it's not desperate? that you....i mean, what goes through your head when you do

don't know i can't understand it." the suspect stabbed the employee in the arm. police say she should be okay. then the robber ran behind the convenience store towards the driftwood apartments. if you have any information that can help police, call the crime line. several of those other convenience store robberies happened at 7-elevens all over hampton roads. police identified a suspect in one on wednesday morning. we were the first to show you this surveillance video from inside the store on chesapeake boulevard. officers believe the man who shot the clerk is 38-year-old kevin bristow. if you've seen him, or know where he is, call police. we also got an update about the injured clerk. we're told he is now out of the hospital. the chesapeake boulevard 7-eleven was robbed twice this week. someone hit it wednesday night. along with two other locations in ghent, all within an hour. police are not saying any of the robberies are connected. after this rash of robberies we contacted 7-eleven about store safety.

statement: "every 7-eleven store in the united states is equipped with security surveillance cameras so we can improve the safety of our guests, store employees and franchisees, and aid law enforcement officials in their pursuit of criminals." the company also said it has safeguards in place including: keeping cash levels low, upgrading lighting and security systems at stores, and issuing employees safety devices. this morning, we have a follow up about yesterday's shooting at a busy chesapeake hotel. police say they have a person of interest. we showed you this scene as breaking news yesterday on wavy news 10 today. it happened inside the extended stay america on greenbrier circle. paramedics took the male victim to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. police have not said who that person of interest is, or if they knew the victim. new this morning, a village in new york may finally get the chance to change its very controversial seal.

have wanted to change it for years. take a look. village officials say the image dates back to 18-83 and shows the founder - hugh white - in a so-called "friendly" wrestling match with the local indigenous people. official say the seal is supposed to show how the founder gained respect from them. on monday, the village will finally get to vote on a replacement image. :17 - :25 mayor patrick have the say about what seal they want to represent them and their home and they're history." whitesboro's mayor says the vote on a new seal is not legally binding. voters are expected to cast their votes monday night. now to a controversial device that more than a dozen colleges across the country refuse to let on their campuses. 20 colleges and universities are banning hoverboards because they can seriously hurt the rider or catch fire. so far we haven't heard of any schools in hampton roads that are

happening today, the u-s supreme court is expected to discuss the corruption case of former virginia governor bob mcdonnell. today is the court's first conference day, where justices decide on which cases to review and which ones to deny. rico bush is live in our newsroom with more on what's expected to happen today. rico, good morning. good morning brandi, don. for the first time since mcdonnell's conviction, the high court may consider hearing the former governor's appeal. it will take at least four justices to decide if they want to review the case. in september 20-14, a federal jury convicted mcdonnell on 11 federal corruption counts. and, last year a federal judge sentenced mcdonnell to

can see the coolest new this morning, a local congressman says he's throwing his support behind hillary clinton for president. george "g.k." butterfield represents the first district of north carolina, which includes elizabeth city, hertford and edenton. butterfield is also the chairman of the congressional black caucus. he wrote that mrs. clinton has the foresight to improve the lives of millions of african-americans. butterfield went on to say, that she has spoken out about racism

above, moments after the truck went over the side. investigators say the driver, 33-year-old matthew killmon, drove through the barricade and into the chesapeake bay. amazingly, he had only minor injuries when crews pulled him from the water. he somehow managed to get out of the cab and swim to the surface. the salvage company will try to recover the truck if the weather permits. thieves are stealing expensive air conditioning units in hampton. police say crooks stole nine a/c compressors in two incidents in the last week. this is the damage from the riverdale office park, off cunningham drive. experts say the thieves take the copper and other parts and sell them. victims have to shell out thousands of dollars for new units. super = traci gray/dental office employee ((c403 37:25)) "i had actually mentioned to my office manager they can't continue to leave time, sure enough we took a closer look, the copper is gone. everything that's salvageable to sell is gone." a second incident
