backstage. >> when do you think this will stink in? >> i don't know.
7:01 am
i'm hoping that this thing came with instructions. >> and the after parties. >> we're going to go over to my house after this. >> yeah. >> i follow him. >> come. >> love to. >> are we invited? >> really? >> wow. >> natalie, now i'm officially jealous, today, monday, january 11, 2016. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is a special edition of "today" at the golden globes with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from los angeles. >> and good morning, everybody. welcome to a special edition of "today" on this monday morning after the golden globes from los angeles. i'm savannah guthrie. we've got willie geist here. matt is on assignment heading to the white house and sitting down with the president. we'll do the show from the white house tomorrow, and i think we all thought we'd be talking about the golden globes and inside this sad news about david bowie. >> yes. so much talk last night at all these parties. the news rushed through the room
7:02 am
guys, we're going down this list of songs. we don't have time to begin to list all his hits. pick your favorite. "space odyssey," "changes," rebel, rebel." >> "rebel, rebel". >> somebody who really changed the landscape of music. >> influenced a lot of the artists of today as well. >> absolutely. it's our top story this morning, the passing of apy nearing figure in the world of music for decades. he succumbed to cancer days after he releasing a new album on his birthday. tributes are pouring in including here in los angeles where fans placed candles on bowie's star on the walk of fame. let's go to nbc's bill neely. he's in london. he's got this story this morning. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. david bowie dead at 69, hard to believe. the tributes being paid here in brickston where he was born, messages and flowers, the face of ziggy stardust, south london, of course, where david bowie

and clubs, a legend now lost to the world. like so much in his life and career, the death of david bowie is surprising, shocking. his facebook page announcing he died peacefully surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer. his son duncan jones tweeting very sorry and sad to say it's true. this is ground control to major tom >> reporter: "space odyssey" a hit in the year of the moon landing that started bowie's ascent to stardom. "star man" and the iconic ziggy stardust album confirmed his genius above all for innovation and change. he created, sang and acted for six decades, moving across genres, pop rock, soul.

number one co-written with john lennon. but then he had the world dancing. dancing in chicago >> reporter: and he could always surprise. embracing generations of side. peace on earth >> reporter: his golden years were the '70s and '80s and never stopped producing 25 albums. >> i just went on and on and suddenly i'm 56. so i have to write from this unique perspective of somebody who never stopped being 20. >> david bowie showed creative artists how to live a career, how to make your art your life. look up here i'm in heaven >> reporter: he released his final album "black star" just last week with the single "lazarus" and a haunting image of the biblical figure who rose from the dead.
7:05 am
>> reporter: in a body of music without equal, a hero to generations of fans. well, it's always been -- it's been said that david bowie was always changing like a chameleon. he wasn't a chameleon because a chameleon changes to blend in. david bowie never blended in. he was perhaps summed up by his song "rebel rebel." i bought his first album when i was a 12. i was a huge fan and like all these fans i'll miss him. savannah. >> i feel the same way, bill. thank you so much for your story. let's turn to joe lev, a contributing editor of "rolling stone" and incoming on spotify. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> first of all, was it well known that he had this struggle with cancer because i have to say the news came as such a shock to me and i think so much of us. >> yes. this was not known at all. this was a private matter and it's interesting. the album, it would have been reviewed so differently just
7:06 am
"black star," his latest record, was released. people would have received it so differently if they had known of his illness. clearly it's a record that faces and faces down the question of mortality, but the decision to keep all of this private allowed the art to come out, to be evaluated and to speak for itself. >> well, let's talk about this art. i mean, it is hard to overstate his contribution to music, to fashion, to culture. what did david bowie do for this world? >> well, quite simply he was one of rock's first self-conscious artists. he looked at everything he did as art, the way he dressed, the way he lived his life, his sexuality. he pushed boundaries all the time, and uniquely he was an inspiration to people in the '70s, in the '80s, in the '90s constantly changes. "changes" is one of his best known songs. it's a theme song for him, that idea of shifting, of constantly
7:07 am
all sorts of different sounds, rock 'n' roll, dance music, noise, all these things. we have david bow toe thank for that. >> well, i was going to say one measure of somebody's success and impact is how young artists and new artists have taken what he did and taken it further. are there people out there in music today or even in the last few decades who you say, oh, david bowie did that first? >> yes. you're tempted to say everyone, but if you look at say lady gaga's first record, you look at this record where she is self-consciously mimicking david bowie's looks, his iconography, the way he dressed because she herself wanted to say right from the start i'm going to be a shape shifter. nirvana covered a david bowie song in a final performance in an mtv live performance. kanye west tweet that had david bowie was an inspiration to him and, of course works we have madonna, another artist whose

and shape-shifting. without david bow toe blaze a trail for her, probably not. >> the in the few seconds i have left, when you talk about the new record, the song "lazarus" released on his birthday. obviously he knew the state of his health. it seemed like he was giving that to the art world as well. >> that's absolutely right. this is a unique moment. as many, many musicians get older and face mortality, we've seen a lot of records thinking about getting older and mortality abstractly, but in this case specifically, someone who knew the end was coming, who had for the last 18 months lived with that knowledge and decided to face it down with his art, with a record that is challenging, that's been warmly received as a david bowie record, a classic david bowie record. that is a fitting testament to an artist of this nature. >> he will be missed. joe levy. thanks so much for sharing your perfect think of morning. we thank you. >> thank you.
7:09 am
out a statement saying this al number in fact was his farewell to the world. >> swan song. >> we'll have much more on the life of david bowie coming up a bit later. now to the reason we're hoo in los angeles for the golden globes. the biggest stars in movies and tv mingling under one roof for a big hollywood party, and natalie's rounded up the winners and the most talked about moments of the night. hey, knit. >> not surprising that ricky gervais did exactly what he said he would do, but there were some surprising upsets in the television categories while in the movies we saw a lot of familiar names walk away with hardware. >> "the revenant." >> the bear wins big. "the revenant" dominated the golden globes, winning best picture, best director and best actor for leonardo dicaprio. >> what an incredible honor. wow, that meant a lot. >> sci-fi entic "the martian" took full advantage of being labeled a comedy. >> comedy? >> topping the category for best picture and best actor. >> i've made a lot of movies
7:10 am
>> it was also last call for done draper with jon hamm winning best actor in a tv drama. >> thank you so much. >> and one more round for sylvester stallion who took him best supporting actor for a role he created four decades ago. >> i want to thank my imaginary friend rocky balboa for being the best friend i ever had. >> lady gaga added a golden globe to go along with her grammy. >> i wanted to be an actress before i wanted to be a singer. >> as star of "american horror story: hotel:" >> one of the greatest moments in my life. >> and to programmingy henson won for ""empire"" for cookie before passing them out. >> my treat. >> and this was a night for newcomers. >> "mozart in the jungle." >> and actress brie larson that won for "room".
7:11 am
and mr. usa's mr. robert, tv's best comedy and drama. >> disgusting, pill-popping, sexual deviant scum. >> ricky gervais didn't hold back in his fourth go round as host. >> he's also the only person who ben affleck hasn't been unfaithful to. please welcome matt damon. >> and shared the night's most uncomfortable moment with mel gibson. >> you don't need to leave your drink here. i'll put you to sleep in other ways. >> while other presenter pairs stole the show by playing. >> i'm eva longa, not ava mendez. >> and hi. i'm america ferrera, not tina rodriguez. >> yes. >> and neither one of us are rosario dawson. >> nope. >> that was such a great moment. other winners of the night, jennifer lawrence, of course, for best comedic actress in "joy" and kate winslet for her floel "steve jobs" and denzel washington honored with a
7:12 am
cecil b. de mille award. >> big night for "the revenant" and "the martian" and so many people when we did the red carpet said we're rooting for sly stallion. so happy to see him get the trophy last night and a standing ovation. >> pretty awesome. >> ricky gervais not surprisingly took a shot at sean penn who was not at the globes this. comes in the wake of the stunning revelation that he secretly met with the mexican drug lord el chapo while el chapo was on the run after escaping from prison. now, mexican authorities want to talk to penn about that encounter. nbc's jacob rascon has more on this story. jacob, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. el chapo is back inside the prison behind me, mexico's top security facility where he escaped last july but it's what happened in between his escape and recapture with actor sean penn that has everyone's attention this morning. it is proof, according to actor
7:13 am
saw coming. drug kingpin joaquin "el chapo" guzman, at the time the world's most famous fugitive, answering questions for a "rolling stone" article in his first interview in decades. the reaction on social media has been swift. many finding it impossible that penn would meet el chapo, eat tacos and drink tequila and talk for seven hours but not turn him in. mexican authorities say penn's meeting might have even helped lead them to el chapo's hideout in the bloody shootout that ended with his arrest. that and the drug lord owes apparent infatuation with mexican soap opera saturday kate del castillo. in a made for hollywood plot twest del castillo who played a drug lord in a popular soap are a on sister network telemundo. >> she is one of tv's hottest stars. >> reporter: here she is promoting her show on "today" last year. >> what do you do? what does your character do?
7:14 am
>> don't interrupt me. >> reporter: she also played a drug trafficker on the showtime series "weeds." >> the i am here to correct that mistake. >> reporter: her connection to the real kingpin apparently started in 2012 when in an open letter on twitter she wrote, mr. mr. chapo, wouldn't it be cool if you started trafficking with love? you would be the hero of heros. life is a business, and the only thing that changes is the merchandise. don't you agree? guzman reportedly tried to send her flowers, though she never received any. while mexican authorities have said they are looking at whether sean penn faces any legal exposure in mexico, the focus of american law enforcement is getting el chapo to the united states, and they called the "rolling stone" article that el chapo allowed to screen before it was published quote, a sideshow. willie. >> jacob rascon, shank you so much. shaun henry is executive assistant director for the fbi
7:15 am
legal analyst. good morning to you both. >> shaun, let me start with you. a lot of people saw the photograph of sean penn shaking the hand of el chapo and were outraged and wanteto know how did he get so close to the man law enforcement has not been able to find? >> that's a great question, willie. you know, when i was in the fbi we were actively looking for -- for el chapo, and i know the resources the u.s. government but into locating him. there's been questions about the mexican government and if there's been any collaboration with them, if they were xlisit with el chapo, but the resources there and the ability to try and track him down, lots of questions here. i know the u.s. authorities are very, very interested in talking to sean penn. >> yeah. and sean penn himself said he thought the dea may be tracking him as he met and pursued with el chapo. do you suspect that sean penn's meeting had any relationship to the fact that authorities finally did catch up to el chapo? >> you know, i think that's a high likelihood.
7:16 am
looking at tracing digital media, looking at telephones and the like. penn himself talked about using encryption, using burner phones in which they use them for a day or two and drop them so that they couldn't be tracked, and then there's been some comments in the media by the mexican attorney general that said in fact that was one. ways they were tracking him, so another issue for -- for penn to be concerned about at this point. willie? >> and lisa, a lot of outrage was directed also at sean penn saying wait a minute. you met with this guy and didn't tell authorities about it. has he opened himself up to any legal action here? >> well, based on the fact that we now know absolutely not. he was acting as a journalist for a magazine. journalists are allowed to meet with people, even criminals, and they are not required to report it. what he can't do is materially help el chapo. if he gave him a dollar. if he helped him strategize, helped him escape or hide. then he would be in trouble, but i'm not seeing that right now. >> all right. and the u.s. now saying it wants to extradite el chapo to the united states.
7:17 am
lisa bloom, shawn henry, thank you both. >> thanks. and now to the presidential race with the iowa caucuses fast approaching. new polls show both the republican and democratic races there are tightening. nbc national correspondent peter alexander takes a look at all the political headlines this morning. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. full plate of politics ahead this week. you've got the president's state of the union address tomorrow, the next republican debate is later this week, and our new nbc new polls show the republican race is still up for grabs in iowa while the democrats are still duking it out in two key early states. three weeks to go, three races still up in the air. ted cruz and donald trump neck and neck in iowa. our brand new nbc news poll showing cruz's advantage just four points, within the margin of error as trump keeps up his attacks on his canadian-born rival's eligibility to be president. >> ted's going around saying this matter is settled. it's not a settled matter. >> reporter: even if trump loses in iowa, he insists he's in it for the long haul. >> there's no maybes. there's no maybes.
7:18 am
>> you're going straight to the convention. >> going all the way. >> reporter: trump's crushing the competition in new hampshire at 30%. instead of uniting behind one establishment candidate rubio, christie, bush and kasich are splitting up 44% of the vote. with eyes on the general election, trump has a new warning for the clintons. keep calling him sexist, and he'll keep bringing up the former president's past infidelities. >> it's a threat. it's a threat. >> it is a threat. >> of course. i mean, i can call it a nicer name, yeah. she was saying he has tendencies towards, sexist and i'm saying wait a minute, she's married to an abuse sneer hillary clinton is dismissing trump's threats arguing for republicans it's a dead end. >> well, it's been fair game going back to the republicans for some years. they can to it again if they want to. that can be their choice as to how to run in this campaign. didn't work before. it won't work again. >> reporter: for the moment clinton has her hands full in iowa. her lead over bernie sanders is just three points, and in new
7:19 am
in vermont sanders is up four. and our new polls also show sanders performs better than clinton does in hypothetical general election matchups in both of those early states as well. clinton is brushing off a new number. she insists polls go up and go down and sanders argues he's the more electage democrat, best suited in his words to keep quote, some right wing extremists from winning the white house. savannah. >> all right. peter alexander in washington, thank you. a reminder, we are taking our entire show to the white house tomorrow. matt is going to sit down with the president. we'll also catch up with live with vice president joe biden. we'll show you some rooms rarely seen in public. special edition of "today" live from the white house. that's tomorrow morning. >> very cool. al will be doing the weather from the white house today. a first check. weather here in l.a. >> all right. speaking of cool, we've got a lot of chilly weather to talk about. this frigid air coming out of canada, and, boy, it is bone-chilling.
7:20 am
we're talking 6 degrees below average in detroit, new york city feels like 18 degrees and feels like 18 in charlotte and here's the difference, 24 hours ago, 24 hours ago it was 26 degrees warmer in d.c., 15 degrees warmer in new york city and 17 degrees warmer in chicago, and there's another reinforcing blast of colder air coming in for today. you'll see that air making its way in from minnesota all the way into chicago. so we are going to be in the cold for another 24 hours, and then things start to moderate. we'll get to terry bradshaw? what a surprise! you know what else is a surprise? shingles. and how it can hit you out of nowhere. i know. i had it. c'mon let's sit down and talk about it. and did you know that one in three people will get shingles? (all) no. that's why i'm reminding people if you had chickenpox then the shingles virus is already inside you. (all) oooh. who's had chickenpox? scoot over. and look that nasty rash can pop up anywhere and the pain can be even worse than it looks. talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

ricky gervais made for a memorable night including al's interviews with the winners. also have the fashion hits and misses. you guys were all out partying last night. a lot more. we'll cover it all. >> we'll be up to that in just a second, but first let's take a look at today's headlines. sad news from the world of music overnight. david bowie has died. changes the legendary singer who just turned 69 on friday and released a new album lost an 18-month battle with cancer. the mexican government has formally started the process of extraditing drug lord joaquin "el chapo" guzman to the u.s. he was recaptured on friday, six months after escaping from a mexican prison. authorities there also want to speak with sean penn who met with el chapo while he was on the run for a secret interviewed published by "rolling stone." and our new poll show the presidential races in iowa are neck in neck with three weeks to go until the caucuses. ted cruz leads donald trump by
7:28 am
clinton has just a three-point lead over bernie sanders. both of those within the margin of error. >> already. now to the jackpot that everybody is talking about this morning. wednesday's powerball drawing will be worth more than $1.3 billion and, yes, that is the largest in the world. an astonishing sum if you think about it, and it probably will go up. nbc's kerry sanders has more on the story. kerry, good morning. >> well, good morning. that's right. nobody won on saturday's draw which is surprising since about 75% of the number combinations were covered, but it also means something else. i still got a chance at this record jackpot which, as you note, is $1.3 billion, so much money the amount doesn't even fit on the billboard. we were awestruck at 500 million, in disbelief at 900 million and now gobsmack as the powerball jackpot soars to a world record $1.3 billion.
7:29 am
even fit on electronic signs or billboards and this wednesday everyone who forks over $2 -- >> good luck, guys. >> gets another shot at an unheard of pay day. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> for ten weeks now people in 44 states have been lining up as the jackpot keeps rolling over. >> it's huge! >> gigantic. >> how did we get here? >> seems like it's getting that way all the time, in everything. >> reporter: wednesday's jackpot began at a mere $40 million back on november 4th. 20 drawings late we are no winner it's ballooned to more than a billion. sales this week are expected to eclipse last week's record. almost $145,000 in sales a minute. >> if i was able to hit it, i would be able to give everybody i knew $1 million apiece and it still wouldn't dent the amount of money hi left. >> reporter: last year your odds of winning the jackpot were better, 1 in 175 million, but powerball changed their rules
7:30 am
the odds now, 1 in 292 million. that's like flipping a coin in the air and landing on heads 28 times in a row. how much is 1.3 billion? it's more money than every presidential candidate collectively spent on their campaigns last year. if you took the $806 million cash payout in dollar bills and stuffed it in 20 piles under your mattress your bed would be more than 14,000 feet in the air. come wednesday night there's only one certainty. most of us will wake up from our dreams of riches. >> the winning tickets are going -- >> reporter: and still have to go to work. is it a burden if you win? >> i don't know. you know what. i'll let you know when i win. >> reporter: if you got the cash payout here and you're the sole winner and you took all of the money in $1 bills, it would weigh more than 888 tons which is more than a 747, the space

dump truck and a herd of elephants combined. >> what? >> guys, that's why they insprinted the electronic transfer. >> yeah, exactly. >> that's crazy. >> love us when you give us the little facts, kerry. thanks very much. >> that's a true burden. >> i know. >> we all volunteered for the burden. >> i'll carry it. >> all right. also this morning, we're learning more about the young woman suspected of pulling off a string of jewelry store jobries across the south as she heads to court for the first time. "today" national correspondent craig melvin has the late on this one. craig, good morning. >> reporter: willie, good morning to you. the woman was taken into custody just a few hours after they started widely circulating her picture. it seems several people recognized her instantly. none of them could believe she's now an accused serial bank robber. it's like the plot of an action movie. the bombshell turned accused bank robber. the fbi says this woman stronghold into jewelry stores

handgun and tied up workers before making off with millions of dollars worth of diamonds and watches. this morning after nine months on the run, five states and at least six robberies, officials believe they have their woman, 24-year-old abigail lee kemp. before she was an outlaw in smyrna, georgia, her friends remember her as friendly and outgoing. >> she was a social butterfly, very upbeat, the life of a party. definitely was a class clown. >> reporter: stephanie god freed played basketball with kemp in high school. >> i saw her playing life as a game rather than trying to do goals or achievements, and i think that's kind what have she was doing in this situation is just having fun, playing life as a game. >> reporter: federal officials say kemp would hold up the stores in broad daylight and as you can see did little to disguise herself. before they caught her friday, they estimate she stole more than $4 million worth of jewelry. >> very cool and puts everything in a big bag and is out of there in a couple of minutes. she is a very, very bold criminal.
7:33 am
believe kemp may be part of a larger jewelry ring. a second person was arrested with kemp, but they have not identified with person or said how or if they are connected to the robberies. kemp will be appearing before a federal judge in georgia later this morning. guys. >> craig, thanks a lot. >> let's take a turn now and get a check. weather from mr. roker. >> today's weather is brought to you by blue buffalo. you love your pets like family so feed them like family with blue. up until now with all the warm weather, the great lakes completely ice-free, and so we're going to start to see more lake-effect snow firing up. we've got winter weather advisories, lake-effect warnings and advisories stretching from green bay all the way to new england. we're going to watch this snow start to develop lake-effect snow and a little bit of a clipper. colder air moving across that warm water and then behind it a fast moving clipper will enhance the area of snow right through

i'm phil mickelson, pro golfer. my psoriatic arthritis caused joint pain. just like my moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. and i was worried about joint damage. my doctor said joint pain from ra can be a sign of existing joint damage that could only get worse. he prescribed enbrel to help relieve pain and help stop further damage. enbrel may lower your ability to fight infections. serious, sometimes fatal, events including infections, tuberculosis, lymphoma, other cancers, nervous system and blood disorders and allergic reactions have occurred. tell your doctor if you've been someplace where fungal infections are common, or if you're prone to infections, have cuts or sores, have had hepatitis b, have been treated for heart failure, or if you have persistent fever, bruising, bleeding, or paleness. don't start enbrel if you have an infection like the flu. joint pain and damage... can go side by side. ask how enbrel can help relieve joint pain and help stop joint damage.

rheumatologist-prescribed biologic. earning unlimited cash back on purchases. that's a win. but imagine earning it twice. you can with the citi double cash card. it lets you earn cash back twice. once when you buy and again as you pay. it's cash back then cash back again. and that's a cash back win-win. the citi double cash card. the only card that lets you earncash back twice on everypurchase with 1% when you buy and 1% as you pay. with two ways to earn, it makes a lot of other cards seem one-sided. we are back with more of "today" at the golen globes. al, you and some of your closest friends were hanging in the wingers' room. how was it? >> it's it a great formula. first of all, make a movie or tv
