many people in our area headed out to the stores before the first wave of winter weather hit. shoppers in hampton scooped up ice melt and shovels. the manager of ace hardware on town center way says they've solds hundreds of both. salt is also going quickly. cameron jasper c15 02:30:44 - :48 "as fast as we can bring it out of the back, it's going off the floor." some stores are already out of salt - like the ace hardware in newport news, on warwick boulevard. an employee says they'll have more today. folks in the western part of the state flocked to the grocery store and cleared the shelves. these pictures come from a kroger store near roanoke. shoppers have already pulled milk and bread from the shelves. they're expecting at least six inches of snow there over the next couple days. people living in northern virginia up past baltimore are under a blizzard watch.

meteorologists in washington forecast the area could get anywhere from 18 to 24 inches of snow friday night into saturday. you're looking live right now at the capitol building. the winter storm will bring wind and heavy snow that could cause blizzard conditions. watch as this woman fell on an icy d-c street. she went down right in front of a car, that luckily stopped. she got up and kept going. but it's not easy getting around the nation's capital this morning. wintry conditions made the evening commute stretch way into the night with traffic clogging interstates 95 and 66. the slick roads were even a problem for the secret service. you're looking at video of vehicles in president barack obama's motorcade skidding on the road. agents had to drive the president from joint base andrews in maryland to the white house because the bad weather grounded helicopters. one

report said the usual 25 minute drive took more than a hour. because of the slippery roads state police responded to more than 150 accidents on the road statewide. one crash turned out to be deadly in bedford county. in fairfax, state police say a van hit a trooper on 4-95. medics took the trooper to the hospital with minor injuries. state police say if you are driving on slippery roads, slow down and give yourself plenty of time to get where you are going. with more cold weather coming, we want you to be safe while staying warm in your home. firefighters say about a third of all house fires in the winter come from space heaters. the virginia beach fire department posted this picture on facebook of a space heater fire in the county view neighborhood yesterday. no one got hurt, but crews offered these tips to stay safe. be sure to inspect the heater for cracked or broken plugs or loose connections before you use it. if you see any damage do not use it.
