shelters has two locations in virginia beach. the executive director tells us they want to spread the word that older children and teens can use seton as a resource. c1 17:57:46 - there are many threats to their safety. physical and emotional safety out there. and when the weather temperature drops, and it's cold outside, it just really magnifies all those issues. :57 seton serves youth from ages 9 to 17. there are several other shelters in the community the homeless can turn to. we have that information posted on wavy-dot-com. half a dozen states are under a state of emergency, including virginia. governor terry mcauliffe says the commonwealth is ready for the storm. we're prepared, we've got everybody in place butt to i've closed the state government. let's keep folks off the road so our personnel can do their work." governor mcauliffe says he's worried about virginians in rural communities, specifically those in the

state. that's one reason why he activated and deployed the national guard. governor pat mccrory also declared a state of emergency for north carolina. :42 -:54 "with the lower temperatures. the sleet and freezing rain will accumulate as ice. making roads very tretcherous and coating trees and possibly having an impact on our power." mccrory said the state is ready for the winter storm. this includes having all state highway patrol troopers activated or on standby. chainsaw crews are also on standby to quickly clear any blocked roads. the winter storm already moved into the western part of virginia. in roanoke, forecasters predict between one and two feet of snow will fall. many schools and colleges are closed today including virginia tech. this is a live look at roanoke before the snow moves in. v-dot says crews are working around the clock to monitor traffic. workers already started pre-treating the roads in the western part of the

blizzard warning. many school districts are closed today. the federal government is even closing early at noon to make sure employees get home safely. you're looking live at the capitol building in washington, dc. forecasters are uring people in the area to just stay home if they can. road crews are pretreating the highways hoping to avoid a repeat from wednesday night's gridlock. meteorologists forecast between two to three feet of snow will fall in washington, d-c. people also flocked to the grocery stores and cleared the shelves! (mos)"we sold out of everything!" this wal-mart in washington sold out of bread on wednesday. hardware stores are also seeing an increase in sales. they can't seem to keep rock salt or shovels on the shelves. people in raleigh, north carolina rushed to fill up their carts before the winter storm. folks lined up in grocery stores with baskets filled with bread, milk, water, and other essentials. lines also wrapped around gas stations as people topped off their tanks.

as our nation's captiol prepares for a blizzard, many families are figuring out what to do with all the snow. many plan to head out and sled. one of the best spots in d-c is on capitol hill. its now legal to slide down the federal hills. last month a congresswoman added a line in the new federal spending bill that gave lawmakers support for families to sled. this is video from last year when families gathered for a "sled-in" protest. the issue turned icy in march after the capitol
