breaking news, we're dealing with thousands of outages right now. all of them are storm related. the high winds are likely playing a big role in that. all night we've been hearing emergency crews responding to down trees here's a look at dominion virginia power's live outage map. the hardest hit areas are james city up on the peninsula with nearly three- thousand out. hampton has more than 26-hundred out. and virginia beach has more than 13- hundred out. there are also hundreds out in williamsburg and norfolk. now to breaking news in norfolk, where someone cannot got back to their home because of a house fire. we got this video overnight of the scene on lyons avenue. this is just of cromwell drive, near chesapeake boulevard. firefighters got the call just after 1:30 this morning. when they got there -- they found heavy fire coming from the back of the second floor. it took them about 25 minutes to get the fire under control. firefighters say the home

detectors. the person living there got out safely, and no one, including firefighters were hurt. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. more breaking news, this time out of mathews county. we got tips and these pictures from viewers about the roof collapsing at donk's theater. you can see the extensive damage, and the snow on top of the roof. according to the theater's website, the building is nearly 70 years old. heavy snow and wind may have caused the roof to collapse. we're still working to get more details from authorities. now let's head to our live teams out in field giving us a live look at this winter weather. our jason marks is live on the south side in virginia beach where a tree fell on a home. and rico bush is monitoring flooding on the peninsula in newport news. for now let's start with jason. he's near lawson hall road.

the storm is crippling travel across the east coast, and it's cancelling or delaying several flights here in hampton roads. here's a look at the depatures list at norfolk international airport. as you can see it's mostly cancellations. it's a similar story at newport news williamsburg international airport. make sure you check with your carrier if you're flying anywhere. the cancellations in hampton roads are just a small part of the more than 7- thousand cancelled flights up and down the eastern seaboard. we checked the departures list at dulles international airport and almost

got from our sister station in roanoke. you can see a lot of snow on the ground there. meterologists say they expect more than a foot and a half of snow on the ground by the time the storm is over. in norfolk -- the city says its focusing on the expected high tides this weekend. flood-prone neighborhoods have been dealing with higher than normal tides tonight. high tide is expected at around eight this morning. super= dave lucas/norfolk public works ((c36 16:51)) with the flooding water, by all real quick and then we have blocked intersections because of vehicles stopped and stuff like that." snow crews will be back to 12-hour shifts tomorrow, after the rain stops. they'll prepare for round two of snow tonight. while public works crews have been working hard to plow snowy roads -- so have private contractors. for snow removal companies, the ongoing storm marks the first big event for business this season. last night, merryman

someone shot and killed four people at a school in canada. it happened in a remote town in saskatchewan. this video taken by a witness shows students walking away from the school and emergency crews moving in. the school is pre-k through 12th grade. about 900 students go there. two people are in critical condition. police say they arrested a suspect. prime minister justin trudeau said the country's heart is breaking for the victims. police in las vegas got into a shootout with a boy in front of a popular hotel on the strip. investigators say officers and a boy started firing at each other near a crowd of people in front of the bellagio hotel last night. police say an officer's bullet grazed the boy. he went to the hospital, but was shortly released and arrested by police. police have not said why the officer fired at nthe suspect, only saying he did not

police say the weather led to a deadly crash in chesapeake. officers say a vehicle ran off south george washington highway, and hit a tree around 2:30. that's right near the canal bank. investigators had to close the road for awhile, but it did open back up later in the afternoon. so far, state police say this is the only fatality because of the

a virginia state trooper is recovering in the hospital after someone hit him with their car. this also happened during last night's winter weather. around 7:30 last night in new kent county -- state police say trooper m.d. jester was helping a driver on the side of the road on i-64. a passing car hit the back of his cruiser. jester's injuries are minor and he should recover. state police say this is just one of the nearly one-thousand crashes in the commonwealth yesterday. we want to make sure you are prepared on the roads. there are several weather related warnings all over the area this morning. for a complete list of delays and closures on the roads, log on to wavy dot com, and click on the

winter storm expands across the east coast. here in hampton roads - we're dealing with some problems, but we didn't get the worst of it. but the storm is giving other parts of virginia a healthy dose of snow. evanne armour from our sister station in richmond gives us a look at what's going on there. evanne: good morning. i'm on monument avenue in the city, which is known statues have some snow on them. this is after we got right now.. but it won't last long. we are waiting morning and dump another two to four inches. sunshine will be back tomorrow, but we aren't 30-s. live in richmond,

baltimore's also getting ready to hunker down during this storm. people in the city made some last minute preparations as the snow started to fall friday night. more than 550 emergency workers are on standby for when the conditions really get bad. officials are urging drivers to stay off the roads. forecasters are expecting up to three feet of snow by the time the storm ends sunday. washington, dc is still being hit by a lot of snow. meteorologists are predicting almost two-feet in the capital when it is all said and done. our national correspondent mark meredith is in d-c. he'll give us an update on how things are looking there in the next hour of news. while the snow is too much for some parts of the country, other places are getting just enough to enjoy.
