our team coverage continues now with a closer look at road conditions on the peninsula. chopper 10 flew over the area yesterday to catch the aftermath of the storm. this is over hampton. you can see snow covering mostly the grassy areas. some of it melted yesterday but this morning we're dealing with refreeze. rico bush is live in hampton giving us a closer look at the conditions this morning. rico how's it looking out there. the area's snow and ice melted sunday and this morning we are dealing with refreezing concerns on the roads. many of the yourself plenty of time getting to your destination. here are some safe driving tips to keep in mind: make sure there is 2 or more car lengths between you and the next car don't break hard but gently to avoid skidding. low gears to keep the

power. air travel in hampton roads is getting back to normal. for the first time in days, we're seeing more scheduled flights than cancellations at norfolk international airport and williamsburg newport news international airport. air travel in washington, d-c, philadelphia, and new york will be slower to get back up and running. you're looking at video from dulles international airport. nearly 12-thousand flights at airports up and down the east coast were cancelled over the weekend. here's a look at flight aware's misery map. it shows the airports with the most delays and cancellations. overnight, dulles had the most with 23 cancelled flights. our team coverage continues with jason marks. he's on your side checking road conditions on the peninsula as you head

we're following breaking news in hampton this morning. despite the snow and ice that kept many people inside, police are investigating a deadly shooting. the details are coming up in our next half hour. plus, new this morning - several people are forced out into the cold because of a fire. where they are now on this frosty monday morning. the peninsula got the brunt of the winter weather in our viewing area -- but the southside dealt with problems too. slippery road conditions caused several accidents across hampton roads. you helped point out the

you sent us. our winter weather team coverage takes us back to the peninsula. colonial williamsburg yesterday. the area got more snow than we saw in hampton roads, so the roads are a bit messier up there. our jason marks is in the car driving towards that way and made a stop in newport news. jason how are the roads looking? the virginia department of transportation (vdot) encourages motorists to avoid unnecessary travel. if travel is a must, drivers should exercise caution while on roads as temperatures

pavement conditions during the early morning first, and roads with lower traffic volumes and shaded spots. drivers also should be alert for pedestrians walking in roads, especially in more urban sidewalks are blocked with deep piles of snow. vdot is not responsible for snow removal on 2 or more car lengths between you and the next car don't break hard but gently to avoid skidding. turn on your lights to increase visibility make sure lights and winshields are clean use low gears to keep the traction on hills avoid over drive bridges and overpasses are usually the first to freeze. be careful. some roads in virginia

back open this morning because of several crashes. we got these pictures yesterday showing cars that slid off roads and ended up overturned in a ditch. this is on indian river and elbow roads in virginia beach. police shut this area down for a few hours before reopening it yesterday afternoon. new this morning, six people are staying somewhere else after a fire at their townhouse in chesapeake. here's a look at crews responding to the neighborhood last night. firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the second floor of this home on pine bend. they say the fire started in a chimney and then hurt. the red cross is helping 11 people forced out by a fire in the south norfolk are of chesapeake. firefighters say heavy flames were shooting from the roof of this apartment on border road yesterday morning. it took them about 30 minutes to get it under control.

out what caused the fire. no residents or firefighters were hurt during this fire. now to the winter storm's impact farther up the east coast. here's a live look at time square in new york through this normally busy section of the city. conditions got so bad, new york's governor put a travel ban into effect saturday afternoon to sunday morning. this is what times square looked like saturday morning. not a car in sight, just crews working to clear the snow-filled intersection. as of sunday morning, nearly a foot and a half of snow fell in new york city. several inches of snow couldn't stop new york's naked cowboy from his normal gig. someone snapped this picture of him playing in times square saturday in the middle of the storm with only his

here in hampton roads we were spared from the worst of the storm. other parts north and west of us are buried under feet of snow. we put together comparision pictures to show you just how much snow fell in about 24 hours. here's a shot from fairfax, virginia, just outside washington, d-c. you can see the snow just coating the cars friday afternoon, and then 24 hours later they are almost completely covered in snow. check out the snow farther west of fairfax. this is leesburg, which is about 45 minutes outside washington, dc. this is actually the childhood home of one of our producers. on the right is snow friday afternoon. and on the left is 24 hours later. the patio furniture is completely buried. and here are more pictures outside that same home in leesburg. this is a shot looking out the front door. you can see the home is literally snowed in. here's another shot outside the house just yesterday afternooon. moving around is very difficult and impossible for some people. this is our producer's father. you can see the snow is up to his waist,

if you plan on traveling in virginia beach -- you may need an alternate route if your commute takes you along indian creek road. utility work is scheduled to begin there today. this will affect indian creek road between craigs causeway and baum road in virginia beach. crews will temporarily close this section to replace drainage culverts and for utility relocation. the closure is scheduled to start today and last through mid-april, but it all depends on if the weather cooperates. keep an eye out for posted detour signs. our team coverage of the icy commute extends into your neighborhood. 10 on your side's rico bush shows us what the road looks like on your street. and the view only chopper 10 can give you. we'll hop on for a ride surveying the hardest hit spots. but first, the heavy snow and wind destroyed a piece of history in mathews county. you'll hear from people who say it's

snow and ice not only cause problems on the roads -- but also for some buildings. as we found out...some can't handle the immense weight of ice and snow. this morning community members are mourning the loss of a landmark theater in mathews county. donk's theater has been an icon since the 1940's with several famous entertainers over the years. it has even earned a spot on the national list of historic places. but now it sits in ruin. the roof and several walls collapsed after winter weather blew

from a busy, stormy weekend. troopers tell us many people took their advice and stayed off the road. troopers say the most traffic crashes happened in our area. there were three deadly accidents in our area. the one in chesapeake was because of the winter storm and two others in virginia beach are still under investigation. since friday troopers responded to more than seven-thousand service calls across the state. that includes about 1500 traffic accidents and two-thousand disabled vehicles. we're working to learn more information about storm-related deaths in our area. state police report the medical examiner's office said five people died because of the winter weather. one was the traffic accident in chesapeake and four others because of hyopthermia. state police reported one person died from the cold in hampton, but firefighters told us it was not storm related. we're working to find out how exactly the person died. in total at least 30 blizzard along the east coast. many people died in car accidents, from carbon

from heart attacks while informed during the storm. before the next snow fall you should download our wavy-dot-com news app and our wavy weather app. together the apps will keep you up to date with the latest closings and delays. you'll also have access to the popular super doppler 10 weather blogs. now to breaking news in hampton. police say a man is fighting for his life after someone shot him multiple times. the suspect is still on the loose this morning. this happened around midnight on smiley road, that's off east pembroke avenue. workers at a nearby convience store tell us they heard about 10 shots. paramedics took the man to the hospital investigators say they do hot have any discription of a suspect. call the crime line if you have any informatin for police. the coast guard called off the search for a man reported missing near hatteras island. crews from elizabeth city looked for him for eight hours after someone reported him missing saturday night.

this past weekend's winter storm wasn't bad for everyone. one of the national zoo's panda's had a ball rolling around in

19-year-old tian tian sliding down hills and frolicking around his encolsure. some even said he was making snow angels. president barack obama's dogs also had fun in the video of bo and sunny playing outside. the black and white portuguese water dogs wagged their tails and barked their way through the blizzard. washington, dc got saw about two feet of snow. the district's offial total was 17 point eight inches, but the washington post reports that number falls short compared with other spots in the area. so why the difference in numbers? the post reports weather observers at regan national airport, where the record is recorded, used an improvised technique and lost their
