we're following breaking news in hampton this morning. despite the snow and ice that kept many people inside, police are investigating a deadly shooting. the details are coming up in our next half hour. plus, new this morning - several people are forced out into the cold because of a fire. where they are now on this frosty monday morning. the peninsula got the brunt of the winter weather in our viewing area -- but the southside dealt with problems too. slippery road conditions caused several accidents across hampton roads.

you sent us. our winter weather team coverage takes us back to the peninsula. chopper 10 was above colonial williamsburg yesterday. the area got more snow than we saw in hampton roads, so the roads are a bit messier up there.

driving around in james city county. jason how are the roads looking? the virginia department of transportation (vdot) encourages motorists to avoid unnecessary travel. if travel is a must, drivers should exercise caution while on roads as low overnight temperatures likely will result in icy pavement conditions during the early morning hours. pavement may be especially slick on bridges, overpasses and ramps, which freeze first, and roads with lower traffic volumes and shaded spots. drivers also should be alert for pedestrians walking in roads, especially in more urban areas where most sidewalks are blocked with deep piles of snow. vdot is not responsible for snow removal on 2 or more car lengths between you and the next car don't break hard but gently to avoid skidding. turn on your lights to increase visibility make sure lights and winshields are clean use low gears to keep the

using cruise control or over drive bridges and overpasses are usually the first to freeze. be careful. some roads in virginia beach and chesapeake are back open this morning after police closed them because of several crashes. we got these pictures yesterday showing cars that slid off roads and ended up overturned in a ditch. this is on indian river and elbow roads in virginia beach. police shut this area down for a few hours before reopening it yesterday afternoon. new this morning, six people are staying somewhere else after a fire at their townhouse in chesapeake. here's a look at crews responding to the dominion pines neighborhood last

found smoke and flames coming from the second floor of this home on pine bend. they say the fire started in a chimney and then spread. the fire was under control in about 15 minutes, and no one was hurt. the red cross is helping 11 people forced out by a fire in the south norfolk are of chesapeake. firefighters say heavy flames were shooting from the roof of this apartment on border road yesterday morning. it took them about 30 minutes to get it under control. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire. no residents or firefighters were hurt during this fire. now to the winter storm's impact farther up the east coast. here's a live look at once again traveling through this normally busy section of the city. conditions got so bad, new york's governor put a travel ban afternoon to sunday morning. this is what times square looked like saturday morning. not a car in sight, just

intersection. as of sunday morning, nearly a foot and a half city. several inches of snow couldn't stop new york's normal gig. someone snapped this picture of him playing in times square saturday in the middle of the storm with only his undewear on. here in hampton roads we were spared from the worst of the storm. other parts north and west of us are buried under feet of snow. we put together comparision pictures to show you just how much snow fell in about 24 hours. fairfax, virginia, just outside washington, d-c. you can see the snow just coating the cars friday afternoon, and then 24 hours later they are almost completely covered in snow. check out the snow farther west of fairfax. this is leesburg, which is about 45 minutes outside washington, dc.

"wayne lanes" has been in waynesboro for more than 35 years. now it's condemned after the roof buckled under the snowfall late saturday night. nearly 2 feet of snow blanketed that area. luckily, no one was hurt. but many residents are heartbroken over the loss of a business that hosted so many memories. the owner has insurance on the alley.

this happened around midnight on smiley road, that's off east pembroke avenue. workers at a nearby convience store tell us they heard about 10 shots. paramedics took the man to the hospital investigators say they do hot have any discription of a suspect. call the crime line if you have any informatin for police. ten on your side has been covering the rising homicide rate in portsmouth. it has more than doubled in the last year. we keep hearing that, and reporting that, but what's being done to make the city safer? we report on mayor kenny wright saying we need a conversation on the crime issue, and we need a plan. so -- where is that plan? one councilman says the time for talking is over, it's time for action. and today beginning at 4:00 councilman danny meeks lays out his "solve the crime plan" only to 10 on your side. clip 1 - (1;18 ) ((these people out here are crying in this community like every community are wanting more police protection and quality of life and they are paying their taxes just like everyone and they aren't getting it here either.)) virginia state police are adding up the numbers from a busy, stormy weekend. troopers tell us many people took their advice and stayed off the road. troopers say the most traffic crashes happened in our area. there were three deadly accidents in our area. the one in chesapeake was because of the winter storm and two others in virginia beach are still under investigation. since friday troopers responded to more than seven-thousand service that includes about 1500 traffic accidents and two-thousand disabled vehicles. we're working to learn

storm-related deaths in our area. state police report the medical examiner's office said five people died because of the winter weather. one was the traffic accident in chesapeake and four others because of hyopthermia. state police reported one person died from the cold in hampton, but firefighters told us it was not storm related. we're working to find out how exactly the person died. in total at least 30 people have died from the blizzard along the east coast. many people died in car monoxide posioning, and from heart attacks while shoveling snow. v-dot teams from hampton roads are helping other areas in the state dig out. crews rolled out yesterday to help crews in northern virginia and lynchburg. these are pictures of them leaving shortly after sunrise sunday. 36 workers left with snow plows, spreaders, and motor graders to help vdot with critical snow clearing operations. they'll join teams already working around the clock to clear out the snow. in less than ten minutes wavy news 10 continues over on fox43.
