7:32 am
o'donnell. in contrast, sarah palin is doing quite a job drumming up support for the tea party movement. in the past few moments, garnering the women's vote has become a priority. why is this vote so important in this election in particular? >> well, because i think women are not only a key part of the democratic constituency in the democratic base, but they can be late deciders and independent voters who are a part of the group of voters who will either, you know, stay at home and not decide or decide late in the race in the final two weeks. that's why you have seen the president, prince, going out to california or washington state and the first lady being deployed to try to make sure that women get out to vote. it could be a big factor down the stretch in the california senate race. in deed in the governor's race in california, so it is very important. >> thank you, david. don't forget you can watch "meet the press" later this morning at 10:00 following 11 news at 9:00 a.m. >> still ahead, the spca joins

7:40 am
governor's race is shaping up, the political analyst and a professor of election law at the university of maryland school of law. good morning. >> good morning. >> let's talk a little bit about polls. there was a poll earlier this week that had o'malley at 37% of the vote, ehrlich with 42. then the sun -- poll comes out giving o'malley a lead. >> there are four polling companies and they all have the same pattern. they all in the last two polls have had o'malley ahead, and the second poll has the margin growing. now, they use different technology in sampling, but they are all saying the same thing, that o'malley is ahead, and that his lead is growing. >> he didn't want to give much compreedence to it when -- creedence when he was asked yesterday, but what do you think? are these polls accurate? >> well, the trend is the thing that's important.
7:41 am
he's ahead and the margin is growing. there are some other internal numbers that are significant. for example, obviously o'malley's campaign ads are working because they both started as positive name recognitions, over 50%, and ehrlich is now at a 43, 43, positive and negative. but the most significant number in the papers polled this morning, i still haven't quite figured it out. first i thraut it was a type graphic cal error, it was the african-american vote, the black vote, 88-4. that's 2-1. i don't know that i have seen that much of a slant. i have been thinking about it since i first heard the number last night, and it has to do, i suspect, with far more than ehrlich and o'malley. >> having said that, the
7:42 am
african-american voters have to turn out. turnout is everything we're hearing. >> well all voters have to turn out in order to count. nothing is unique about african-americans in that regard. all of these polls are trying to sample likely voters. and that phenomena, i suspect, has something to do with national events. i don't think the black community is that anti-ehrlich. i think it is more anti-republican party. they think the party is unreasonable with obama. they are breaking even. it is not a significant number. the margins for o'malley are such that it won't be decisive. >> i have to ask you, for lieutenant governor, mary king
7:43 am
-- >> disappearing lieutenant governor candidate. no one has seen her, except for perhaps family and friends, and that's been an interesting phenomena. you would think it wouldn't have occurred. the gender gap is pretty wide. under this poll, o'malley gets the female vote by a 21% margin. i don't know what that's about. >> all right. we had the former president come, we had obama for o'malley, jewel yaiany -- guilliani for ehrlich. are they helping? >> something is helping o'malley. i don't know what it is, but his margin on all the polls continues to grow. >> and michael fields is making an appearance on meet the press. >> another disappearer.
