5:34 pm
the 394-unit, 43 storey tower will be open this fall. >> and on the roads. tonya rivens is tracking it all in the first alert traffic center. >> your first alert traffic is sponsored by people's bank. and as we check here on the expressway john belk by wilkinson boulevard and west boulevard, a little bit of volume but it's been a pleasant friday commute for the most part as we check in on an accident at center city. an injury accident at the intersection. camden road and construction here as well. it's been moved to the shoulder. south boulevard is a great alternate route to get around that. and back and look in this area and check on the slow-moving traffic. look at the stop-and-go traffic on i-77. this is woodlawn road. really slow-moving traffic in this area. but no report at the moment of anan accident. here is the scene of that accident over at camden and west boulevard. of course, medic is still on the scene for that one. back to you. >> thank you. dozens of you reached out to us after a cat named cooper was taken from the rowan county
5:35 pm
the animal's jaw was broken in two places and you asked us to investigate and we sent dedrick russell to get answers. and dedrick this is hard to understand. first off, how is the cat doing right now? >> we are told that the cat is resting comfortablely after an operation that took place. the cat now has to wear braces and is only restricted to liquids. while the cat is on the road to recovery, you know, an investigation has been launched to figure out exactly what happened. concern coming in for cooper, the cat. one person wrote on facebook in disbelief of his atrocity and hope all responsible are held accountable. >> personal reaction was is what idiot did this to him. >> she was about to pick up and foster cooper until someone adopted him and explains what
5:36 pm
i spoke to her over the phone today. >> they told her that he acted up, when they were doing the microchip and he was bleeding. >> but when cooper was checked out it was discovered the c c's jaw was broken in two places. >> my first initial reaction i was irate. because you know, they take them back behind closed doors and you have an animal they are fine and come out and they are injured. >> the state is investigating. the department found out about the injury through facebook and people calling about possible abuse. >> and i thought who could hurt an animal like this? >> an investigator stopped by the shelter asking questions and making sure all procedures were followed. the last time the rowan county animal shelter was in violation was back in 2014. both employee and shelter had to pay a $1,000 fine. rowan county issued this statement reading it is saddened
5:37 pm
its shelterment the county states it will take care of all of cooper's vet bills while cooper is on the road to recovery. she is worried about the other animals at this shelter. >> this was done to cooper what is is being done to the animals that we don't see? >> now state officials say the investigation should take a week. and the county says it will make every effort to make sure all animals at that shelter are treated humanely and try to improve policies. and people today also believe that things could change for the better there at that shelter. as for cooper, the foster parent is here and will take cooper home today and he will come back to the hospital the next two weeks to see how he is doing. live in south charlotte, dedrick russell wbtv on your side. >> all right thank you. next here at 5:00 another troubling animal story.

and now a community is doing all it can to find who hurt her. >> and the severe weather hits the south and the there are those who say we cannot defeat a corrupt political system and fix a rigged economy. but i believe we need to lift our vision above the obstacles in place and look to the american horizon. to a nation where every child can not only dream of going to college, but attend one. where quality healthcare will be a birthright of every citizen. where a good job is not a wish, but a reality. where women receive equal pay and a living wage is paid to all.
5:39 pm
there is time for rest and grandchildren. a nation that defends our people and our values, but no longer carries so much of that burden alone. i know we can create that america if we listen to our conscience and our hearts and not to the pundits and the naysayers. i'm bernie sanders. i approve this message,

5:44 pm
he pleaded guilty in federal court to the charges. documents show that he admitted to conspiring to provide resources to the terrorists with isis. no word yet when he will be sentenced for the crimes. troubling story there. back to you. >> thank you. >> right now get you updated on the commute with tonya rivens in the first alert traffic center. >> things are starting to pick up on 485. as we check by arrowood road i-77 northbound and southbound and a lot of volume. an accident congestion in the area. rea road is a great alternate route. and perhaps you see the red on johnston and 485. typically we have it from rea road to south boulevard. and in addition to that, volume on pineville matthews highway 51 by 485. and johnston and we are seeing volume is on i-77. state troopers say there is no accident but notice how slow
5:45 pm
average speeds 28-miles-per-hour around that area. slow-moving traffic as we check in. this is i-77 at tyvola road. perhaps you are heading to time warner cable arena for the hornets tonight. maybe adam o'daniel from the "charlotte business journal" national time if you are headed for that game. >> and the hornets are playing well. this system that you see here, dumping a lot of rain across the south. it's been there for days you can see the damage in louisiana. rivers and streams covering the roads now. at least five people have died since it started raining. wbtv anchor maureen o'boyle has more new at 5:00. >> the deadly storm system punishing the south unleashed another round of torrential rain overnight. thousands have been forced from their homes in northern louisiana where more than 20 inches of rain fell just this week.
5:46 pm
guard staff sergeant in this parish. they delivered sandbags and rescued 100 people. last night the evacuations were voluntary. the national guard helped get angela and her daughters to safety but her 22-year-old son decided to stay behind but fears grew that the levees would breach. >> turned into a mandatory evacuation. >> staff sergeant and the family went back for her son. >> mandatory. >> more people joined them as this area braces for more potentially life-threatening weather. flooding this severe is rare in this part of louisiana. chris is not from here but came to help. >> helping the neighborhood. it's hard seeing these people struggling. i mean, why not do something good? >> maureen o'boyle wbtv on your side. >> that is serious for those
5:47 pm
has not happened since the 90s. >> and that system stuck there and it's not moving. >> and especially not to be related to a tropical system. >> it's unusual for this time of year. all week unrelenting. but when the rain gets here it will not be as heavy and the storms will not be as strong. we have a little bit of that coming our way. but in the short-term this is about the warmth because today we hit 81 today. and the record for today will stand at 83 but we were 2 away from at least tying that record and the average high is 62. 20 above average. 77 in the charlotte area right now. and one other thing that you may have noticed it's more humid today. dew points are in the upper 50s and they will stay in the upper 50s through tomorrow and close to that 60 threshold for dew point when it starts to feel humid. so that is going to happen as we
5:48 pm
we have cloud cover showing up on the ray car network. -- radar network. nothing falling right now. as far as rain is concerned. but again we have a shower chance going forward into the weekend and we have talked about the rain in the western gulf and it's not this rain that is coming in tomorrow. instead, we've got a back door cool front that is coming in from the north. not the direction that we typically see fronts come in from why it's called back door. this is sliding across the carolinas throughout the day tomorrow. and that will provide enough to touch off a shower in couple of spots. it's not that gulf rain that is coming in tomorrow. so anything that we see should be on the light side. and future-cast for saturday this is 9:00 a.m. it will be hit or miss. most of the showers should be on the light side and not sticking around for too, too long.
5:49 pm
possibility of a small scattering but it should not impact your outdoor plans if you have any any for tomorrow. temperature-wise cooler not as warm as today. lower 60s in the mountains and foothills upper 60s and lenoir and taylorsville 68. and the charlotte area after that high of 81 today tomorrow is 72. so while it's above average not nearly as warm as today. and it is going to get warmer across the south carolina counties where you could reach the mid-to upper 70s since it doesn't look like the cooler air will make it that far south. again to reenforce the point that we are not looking for much in the way of rain tomorrow. look at future-cast rainfall totals it's barely skwegz out. but it is not going to be a lot for saturday. sunday not so much. as we head into sunday, you will see more showing up.
5:50 pm
pockets of maybe a few brief downpours and rumbles of thunder for the second half of the weekend on sunday. by far it looks like saturday will be your better weekend day to get outdoors if you do have any plans for that. nine days away from spring beginning on the 20th of march. that will be a week away. and i jumped over my seven-day first-alert forecast here it is. low 70s both days with increased shower chances for the weekend. monday we have showers and storms lingering. and beyond that warm. upper 70s and dry tuesday, wednesday and do not forget daylight saving time begins this weekend. set your clock ahead an hour before you go to bed saturday night. >> next... >> guaranteed to be your number one and number two. favorite story. the porta-potty convention. i'm kristen hampton. the good news is coming up. >> gosh. and coming up new at 6:00...

6:00 pm
hyde park neighborhood off beatties ford road yesterday afternoon. steve crump talked to the young woman's mother. steve, quite a frightening experience for that girl? >> that, it was. a very scary experience for that 18-year-old who was home alone and those four suspects came barging in the back door two with guns. nobody hurt but there is a lot of scars emotionally to deal with. >> she did not [inaudible] >> the damage from the back door speaks loudly. splinters and wood offer the telling reminders of the aggressive force used to gain entry. >> and they came in here. and then they took that and they took the plaque off the wall. >> the family does not want their faces shown or exteriors of their home photographed.
