news. i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm chris cato. begin with meteorologist bill henley and his first alert forecast. a little cooler this morning. >> mess the, out to 15 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. feel the difference as you head out the door. humidity lower, still clouds overhead but no sign of any rain. the radar shows we are completely dry. a live view of the first alert radar should stay dry during the day today and the temperatures will be warmer even though we're getting a cooler start. 59 degrees at philadelphia international, but low 50s in mount holly, dropped to 51 and now 55 in allentown. cool start and with those clouds around we'll see some sunshine filtered to begin with but the clouds thinning out by 1:00 this afternoon, bright sunshine skies and 75 degrees while the wind stays light. we'll go go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood when i come back in ten minutes. see what's up with the roads. a few problems this morning. first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> good morning. a few problems is right. we're in the beginning of what

seems to be rush hour. a bunch of things popping up. but we haved edd edvhave good news on the schuylkill. the vine street expressway and the eastbound lanes in here everything moving along just fine. our drive times still up. so too the center city area 13 minutes from the blue route to the vine street expressway. watching out for an accident investigation involving a police officer out in southwest philadelphia. 58th street and woodland avenue if you want to get around that scene. for now take springfield avenue. out in tacony an overturned vehicle on the streets on charl street. take frank further avenue to get by that scene. as well more details to come. the accident you mentioned in tacony will have amazing surveillance video of that for you in a moment. we're following this breaking news from southwest philadelphia a live picture here where a police officers was hurt when a car collided with his patrol vehicle as he was responding to a call. nbc 10 first on the scene at

58th and woodland where a white car t-boned the police suv before 3:00 this morning. it's still unclear who had the red light at the intersection but we're told the officer did have emergency lights on at the time and was responding to a call. the crash was violent enough to send a police suv crashing into a light pole. you see the signal on the ground. the officer may have injured his hand and have a concussion. three people in the other car, including a child, were taken to the hospital just as a precaution. breaking news out of massachusetts now where firefighters are on the scene of a five-alarm fire in lawrence, about 30 miles north of boston. several buildings on fire there. one of them burning. no reports of injuries yet. we'll continue to follows this breaking news and bring you information. it's 5:32. breaking news overnight, people in three states assessing damage after tornadoes rumbled through last night. this is one of the twisters in nebraska. also this morning, oklahoma,'s

governor preparing to declare a state of emergency to get resources. a lot of damage in and around oklahoma city. tornadoes flattened a self-storage facility. winds damaged a trailer park where officials say at least a dozen were injured and taken to hospitals. this is new video into nbc 10 it's a close-up look at the wind and rain that brought down tree limbs in oklahoma city. it was taken from inside a news van as the storms rolled from in this morning. a flash flood emergency in effect in the oklahoma city area. developing story about a teenage suspect who bailed out of a moving vehicle while he was in custody in handcuffs. police are still looking this morning for 16-year-old hasheem singletary. police say a private prisoner transport company was taking him to the police station in philadelphia last night when he jumped out of the car at 55th and cedar as it was moving down the street. a suspect in two gunpoint robberies that happened in university city in february. and nbc 10 is live at the

scene of that crash in tacony that jessica mentioned. the car flipped and hit several parked cars. nbc 10's monique braxton just got to the scene a minute ago. what can you tell us? >> hey, tracy. we did just arrive here and i've checked with police and they are still investigating exactly what happened here at the scene. sketchy details now, but this is what we do know. the two people were inside a car, at least one person is under arrest. we understand the car was driving on charles street. it hit some parked cars overturned and the impact of the crash damaged also other parked cars here as you can see. some cars are pushed here on the sidewalk. we will talk to some of the witnessesp. also touch base again with police to find out exactly what happened. we did see that one person was taken away on a stretcher. he was also hand cuffed. whether or not they're investigating him for dui, speeding, that is still unclear at this time.

but an amazing scene here at tackwana and charles street. all the streets will be shut down for the morning commute as aid comes to the scene to investigate what has happened here. several people who live on this street are out watching the investigation. we're going to talk to them and find out exactly what happened. a surveillance camera also captured the moment of the impact. if we have that cued up let's look at that now. it's unbelievable seeing the car traveling on charles street, hitting overturning and damaging several parked cars on route. live for now from tacony monique braxton, nbc 10 fuse. 5:35. the bucks county health department says no students are in danger but they still want parents to know that a student stuck several classmates with a needle at school yesterday. it happened at fdr middle school in bristol township. officials say it's the type of needle used to test blood sugar

levels in diabetics. the student involved and the classmate are being punished. we have new information on the chaos in colwyn. the state is preparing to take over the borough's finances. the community and economic secretary determined that colwyn is financially distressed. the state will appoint a coordinator to develop and propose a plan for the borough. troubles came to a head in recent weeks with a $1 million shortfall and the firing of its manager who accused council of mismanagement. graduation grid locke. the traffic trouble you can expect around one local university. plus, push to her limits. >> don't stop. you got this. >> come on now. >> that army captain crumbles to the ground feets from the finish line. the endurance exercise getting national attention.

now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> clouds moving through the area but no sign of any rain. these clouds will be thinning and enough sunshine to see a warmer day today, but right now it's cooler. 14 degrees cooler at 55 degrees at northeast philadelphia with calm conditions light wind across the area. no sign of any rain. but check this out. got a storm system developing off the south carolina coast. a 70% chance of this becoming a subtropical storm. we will be watching this closely

over the next few days. heavy showers just offshore. those will linger to the south. for us today, no sign of showers. the clouds will be thinning out. look at that 80 degrees in allentown and close to the 80 degree mark for quakertown and redding. see sunshine clouds and a warm afternoon for trenton and norristown. 81 degrees. 80 in mount holly. right at the shore, little cooler for atlantic city and rehoboth inland at the airport for cape may. 80 degrees. vine labd will be 80 while it's cooler in dover today, but near the 80 degree mark for wilmington and into the 80s for drexel hill and philadelphia. sunshine today, and warmer weather this weekend. and a chance of some showers too. we'll be watching the weekend forecast with the seven day when i come back in ten minutes. >> all right. 20 minutes until 6:00. we saw monique's report on the violent accident in tacony where the car hit a parked car and flipped over. looks like that's going to be causing problems. >> jessica has been telling us about that. remind us of where that is

a quarter to 6:00 on thursday morning following three breaking news stories this morning. first, nbc 10 first on the scene at 58th and woodland where a white car t-boned the patrol suv just before 3:00 this morning. in the past 15 minutes the road reopened in both directions. nbc 10's matt delucia is there and will have a live report. also breaking the past 45 minutes, we got this surveillance individual look at this video from tacony. see a car hit a parked car and flipped over. later police say one of the people in the car ran away. nbc 10's monique braxton is live on that scene talking to witnesses and we'll hear from them in about 15 minutes. take a look at this fire in

massachusetts. investigators say several buildings are burning right now, about 30 miles north of boston. no one was hurt. and this. video of a training exercise on a burlington county military base that has a lot of people talking this morning. take a look ear. >> come on now. >> keep going. >> get up. >> the video shows army captain sarah cudd falling several times with gear on her back. she veryrefused to give up. this is a rigorous training drill that lasted 12 days. some are asking is this an example of inspiring determination or was she pushed too far? captain cudd spoke to us by phone and she said her legs simply turned to gel jello. >> i never lost consciousness. i was just very week. i like endurance sports anyway. from my perspective i don't think i quite reached a limbit but i was close. >> captain cudd did finish as

her fellow soldiers cheered her on. she earned the elite expert field medical badge. happening today new attorney general loretta lynch will defend the justice department's budget at a senate hearing in washington. along with the budget lawmakers are expected to question lynch about terrorism, boarder security and racial tensions. this is when she visited the baltimore police on tuesday. yesterday, in fact she got a request from baltimore's mayor for a federal investigation into that city's police department. baltimore's mayor is asking the department of justice to investigate her city's police department. we have to get it right. failure is not an option. >> mayor stephanie rawlings-blake wants to know if the police department has a pattern of using excessive force or discriminatory policing. maryland's governor has lifted a state of emergency for baltimore. he's also pulling out the national guard and state police. freddie gray died back in april after suffering a severe

spinal cord injury. it happened after being arrested by six baltimore police officers who are now charged. prosecutors ruled gray's death a hom soid. all six officers are charged in connection with gray's death and we looked into the background of one of the officers edward nero, a new jersey faytive. he served as a firefighter in washington township for several years. president obama will present a special award to the u.s. air force academy's football team today. now this is video from 2013 when the navy football team visited the white house for the same honor. obama is giving the air force team the commander in chief trophy today for beating the other service academies during last year's season j. this morning pope francis is rocking a new title. >> the pontiff is now an honorary harlem globetrotter. here's the picture to prove it. several pictures. globetrotters met the pope during his weekly general audience at the vatican yesterday and presented the pope with a framed number 90 jersey

through the area but no showers with these clouds and they're not going to last all day. they will be thinning out and we'll get enough sunshine to warm us into the 80s today. something we didn't see yesterday. 59 degrees right now in philadelphia. easterly winds just at 5 miles an hour but most of the area has no wind this morning and everybody is running cooler at 77 degrees cooler right now at philadelphia internationalp. you see scattered clouds in the pocono mountains. live view. we have sunshine there and a nice warmup in the mountains. in fact, everybody is going to see the nice warmup. the rain clouds have pushed to the south. you can see the cloudiness that's moving through the area right now. it's not going to leave us completely but the clouds will thin out enough to give us enough sunshine to warm us into the upper 70s and low 80s this afternoon. partly sunny skies, definitely warm, but the humidity will stay in check today with light southeasterly winds developing this afternoon. anywhere from 3 to 8 miles an hour. tomorrow, the warming trend continues. 85 degrees tomorrow afternoon. that's after a morning low of 61 degrees.

bright sunshine for friday. over the weekend, here comes the heat and some humidity. it will start to climb on saturday. you'll feel it more so on sunday with a high of 87 degrees sunday afternoon. here's the chance of an isolated shower saturday or sunday. it's not a big threat but it is a possibility. it is a bigger possibility, though, a greater chance for monday and tuesday as some scattered showers and thunderstorms. still very warm money and tuesday, upper 80s, summer like levels, but then things come back to spring time wednesday, with sunshine and high temperatures in the 70s. nine minutes before 6:00 on your way out the door check the roads. we've had a couple issues you should know about before you head out. >> an update from nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> thanks. good morning, everyone. happy thursday. we're looking live right now on top of the tacony palmyra bridge. sky force 10 over top of the scene. you can see currently in the process of an opening to allow a boat to pass through.

you didn't get a tax refund last month. an audit finds nearly 1600 irs workers evaded paying their taxes over a period of ten years. >> right. and instead of getting fired, some got promotions and raises. the audit says the workers improperly claimed dependents and tax credits for first-time home buyers when they didn't buy a house. the irs says those not fired did face disciplinary actions like reprimands and suspensions. a 10-year-old boy is using his art to help a south philadelphia organization. we would like to introduce you to the kid known as the dragon master. santino was diagnosed with autism at 5 and found a way to express himself drawing pictures of dragons on t-shirt. after a trip to the park where kids made fun of him, his parents got a few shirts to design and his mom posted pictures of his designs on facebook with the tag autism awareness. >> the next day, the design people wanted to buy them. and nine turned into 50 and now

it is the aberdeen regatta week. the largest crew competition in the country. live look at the schuylkill risk remember the competition is happening tomorrow and saturday. thousands of athletes from 100 colleges and universities will compete. along with the rowers the event draws 25,000 spectators.
