>> announcer: nbc10 breaking news. new developments this morning in the deadly amtrak train derailment. the engineer's lawyer spoke for the first time revealing what the man behind the controls remembers. this as authorities identified another of the seven victims. and skyforce 10 is live over the scene of deadly derailment in port richmond. showing the progress 32 hours after the train came off the tracks going twice the posted speed limit. it's 4:30 this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> and i'm chris cato. we just learned that two train cars on trucks now, ready to be removed from the scene of that

accident. there's also new information from the lawyer of the amtrak engineer being investigated. he was at the controls tuesday night. also there's no amtrak service between philadelphia and new york again today. we have live nbc10 team coverage. we're gathering new information in the investigation and new information on those killed. the search for the missing, we're still at least one person missing in all of this. we're also looking again at how this is impacting a lot of commuters in the area. let's start into the investigation into the derailment. federal investigators are already poring over data taken from that train downloaded on the train's computer. >> right. they're trying to gather enough information to find out exactly why the train jumped the tracks. nbc10's matt delucia is live in port richmond. you've gotten a better view. explain where you are. >> reporter: chris and tracy, we moved on a rooftop so we have a better vantage point of the scene. you can see from this height level, you can see the emergency

workers, police and firefighters are in the distance. they also brought out the large lights that we saw late last night, shortly after the crash happened so they can illuminate the area. and as chris just mentioned, we're seeing some of the activity in trying to remove some of the railcars that were damaged as a result. now, the investigation, this has been under way for a full day. the ntsb is looking at the so-called black box of the train in an attempt to find out what was going on leading up to the derailment. what we know from the investigation so far is that the amtrak train was going 106 miles per hour. then an emergency brake was pulled then the crash after it came around the curve here at the frankford junction. the speed limit around that curve is only 50 miles per hour. almost double that speed. the engineer of the train is 32-year-old brandon bostian, as of late last night, philadelphia police tell us that detectives have interviewed him, took his cell phone, as well as a blood sample. they want to talk with him again.

the ntsb says meantime it has not yet done an interview with bostian. >> have we talked to the engineer? the answer to that is no but we plan to. this had person has gone through a very traumatic event. >> reporter: and at this moment philadelphia police tell us there are no criminal suspects as well as the investigation is concerned. the engineer's attorney told a national news outlet last night that his client has no recollection of what happened or anything unusual. but, again, as we take another live look at the scene. you can see there's till a lot of activity. vehicles coming in and out. tow trucks moving in and out of this area within the past hour. they've been bringing in extra rails to try to replace some of the damaged rails out there. also some of those electrical lines overhead so they can get the amtrak system back up and running so a lot of activity still out here at this hour of

the morning. >> the derailment has had had a huge impact obviously on travelers north the another corridor. >> matt was just talking about the effort to get the rails fixed and overhead wires fixed. this is still affecting a lot of people. nbc10's katy zachry is live at 30th street station in philadelphia with more on that story. katy. >> reporter: chris and tracy, the first train to leave is headed south. it leaves in ten minutes already passengers just boarded here at gate 5. there are also passengers here that we've been talking to were supposed to take septa's trenton line but that will not operate for a week because it shares the same track as amtrak's northeast corridor where the accident happened. some travelers tell me they were supposed to take an amtrak train heading south but they have apprehensions about that. about train travel, they say, in general now. >> we are not too sure if you

know, if that line at this stage will be ideal for travel. but i'm sure you know, with due diligence in a couple days or weeks, things will be set right. >> reporter: and because there are no amtrak trains running on the northeast corridor that's between philadelphia and new york for the next few days if not, even longer. we are being told that greyhound, new jersey transit and mega box are cross-honoring those tickets to help passengers out. reporting live katy zachry "nbc10 news." >> it's easy to think about the philadelphia to new york because that affects so many people here. but a friend of mine yesterday was trying to get back from new york to d.c. and actually had to buy a one-way plane ticket to get home to her family. it's impacting a lot of people in the new york area as well. a lot of changes are ahead for those who take mass transit. >> especially around here if you're local. jessica boyington has information that commuters need to know. >> yes. definitely amtrak service is still spended from philadelphia to new york city and notified sill between washington had harrisburg philly and new york city and boston. and atlantic city rail suspended from cherry hill to philadelphia. cross-honoring amtrak tickets between new york city and trenton so far for the morning. and moving actually out to port richmond, police are still directing traffic around frankford avenue between torres diehl and castor avenue. seven people lost their lives in the train derailment in port richmond. >> we're finding out more about the victims. >> reporter: promising and influential members of the community. medgar evers college confirmed one of their employees died.

derrick griffith was the dean of student affairs and enrollment management. he also served as a principal and founded the city of new york preparatory transitional high school. we know the identities of four others. rachel jacobs the ceo of a startup company in philadelphia and mother of a toddler. associated press jim gaines on his way home from meetings in washington going to north jersey. he has two children. he was killed so was abid gilani. and a naval midshipman justin zemser. then there are the mig, this boy's dad dropped his son off at lacrosse and got on the train tuesday night. his family has been handing out flyers taking to social media, hoping someone knows where he is. hoping he's in a hospital or he might be okay. officials are still trying to account for all of the passengers on that train.

there are injured still recovering. there are 22 derailment victims at temple university hospital right now. eight of those are in critical condition. we will have more on the injured coming up in about ten minutes. a second of the nbc10 website and the nbc10 app is devoted to the deadly 6( derailment. there are detailed profiles of the victims. interviews with survivors and information on amtrak and septa changes. a chilly start to the morning and a breezy one, too. northerly winds keeping things cool this morning. get your sunglasses ready, we've got bright sunshine on the way. and a look at your weekend -- coming up.

at 4:44 we continue to follow the breaking news. skyforce 10 is over the scene of that deadly derailment in port richmond. you can see they are clearing wreckage. look at the seconds before and after the derailment. i know the picture is grainy. look closely. you can see the train as it approaches the curve tuesday night. the train speeds by them. you see the bright flashes right up the sky. from another angle you can see what looks like an explosion. >> here's a closer look at the amtrak train. it's the busiest railroad in north america.

it appears 11.4 million passengers up and down that stretch in 2014. the most recent numbers we have available. amtrak carried more riders between d.c. and boston than all airlines combined. it is busy to say the least. a lot of people count on it. a lost those people go to 30th street station in philadelphia. again, that derailment affecting travel through the northeast corridor. call 1-800-usa-rail to check schedules and to see if the train is on time. boy 200 people injured. many of those survivors are looking at a very long recovery. this morning, we're hearing some of their story, too. >> we're also hearing from the loved ones hurt in the crash. brshgs monique braxton is live in port richmond. >> reporter: we've learned overnight that some of the injured have contacted attorneys. as you look at the mangled metal and twisted debris overturned

railcars. remember the victims were refgt when the train hit the curve here in frankford junction. as you know trains don't have seat belts. the passengers' luggage was flying everywhere from what witnesses are telling us. we checked on the condition of survivors still hospitalized. two dozen are at temple. we spoke to the brother of one of them. he did not wish to share his name. >> she has broken ribs. she has a fractured back. she's unable to eat. >> reporter: now, half a dozen villes are still at hahnemann. one is in serious condition. also six people are at thomas jefferson. we're going to be calling local hospitals out there the morning and keeping you posted on the condition of those who miraculously survived the deadly derailment. live now from port richmond monique braxton, nbc10 news.

>> out of the tragedy, there are stories, incredible stories of what people did to try to help. >> we talked to one man who actually put his own safety at risk by rushing to the scene after the crash. scott lowman said it it was like a war zone. he kicked a hole in the fence there, he's showing us on camera, to get to the tracks to help them any way he could. >> i just thought, you see the stories all the time about how people die because people didn't get there fast enough or whatever, i came up the hill i was just like oh my god. it was little bitty fires here and there. nothing blazing i think that already happened. just little fires, smoke. >> reporter: he said first responders were already there by the time he got there. he said he rides the train every day, and the fact that people died in that crash have heartbreaking. a lot of people have empathy for those who died and their

but temperatures will be climbing thanks to sunshine. no sign of any wet weather, we could use the rain and we will get some. this system that's moving into the midwest, that's a possibility for us for this weekend. showers and possibly some thunderstorms. but not today. today is dry, brilliant sunshine and temperatures that will warm into the low to mid-70s this afternoon. northerly winds will persist at 10 miles an hour during the day today. tomorrow, a little bit warmer with sunshine to start with there will be some clouds in the afternoon. 78 after a morning low of 62 degrees. and then here comes the heat humidity and a chance of scattered showers and a possibility of thunderstorms for saturday and sunday and into next week. doesn't look like all day rainfall or saturday sunday or monday or tuesday. and by the time we get to sunshine on wednesday, it will have a high of 72. 4:51 and this morning, we have the results of an exclusive nbc10 poll in the race for mayor of philadelphia. here's what we did. we teamed up with the inquirer

five minutes before 5:00 and skyforce 10 is live own the scene of that tragedy in port richmond this morning, we'll get a much better look at it as the sun comes up. and we'll see what progress has been made overnight. crews have been working all night to clear the wreckage to fix the rails working on electrical linings above. the derailment killed seven people and hurt 200 others. federal investigators say the deadly derailment in philadelphia could have been prevented you a sophisticated system of sensors on the rails and inside the engine car. the ntsb says the system is called positive train control or ptc. if the train is going too fast the computer warns the crew and if the crew doesn't slow it

down the computer activates the brakes. >> this is exactly the type of accident that ptc is designed to prevent. we will see it before and we will continue to see it again until we see it installed. >> now, all u.s. railroads are required to install ptc by the end of this year. but some lawmaker say the deadline will not be met should be extended into 2020. some portions of the corridor do have ptv but not in the area where that crash happened. now, let's talk about seat belts. would seat belts have helped to save lives in the deraiment? >> a former transportation official believes it would have made a difference. ray lahood says he rides the train frequently and has often thought about seat belts. he said federal investigators should come up with seat belts when they come up with their recommendations. however, a british study recommended against seat belts saying they wouldn't necessarily

reduce serious injuries. and just hours after the deadly derailment some house members in washington voted to cut amtrak's budget. the house appropriations committee voted to cut more than $250 million for amtrak for the upcoming year. 21 democrats voted against the cut saying they wanted to increase amtrak spending up to $3 billion. and new information about a speed limit increase on i-95 in delaware. the department of transportation will be raising the speed from 55 to 65. and the split just south of wilmington. signs will be changed starting monday. and that work will continue through thursday weather permitted. an exterminator convicted of killing a local doctor now facing life in prison. a jury convicted jason smith. authorities say smith strangled the doctor inside her philly

city home tied her up and set her on fire. ketunuti worked at children's hospital in philadelphia. after the prosecutors say that she questioned smith's work. on jailhouse tape he actually joked with his girlfriend about trial strategy. the man who was shot in this wild hit and run chase is in critical condition this morning. philadelphia police say the driver allegedly ran over two officers at two different locations in olney on tuesday. the officers are now out of the hospital. police say the man behind the wheel was rudolph keitt. his attorneys say he was having a seizure during the incident. serving a life sentence for
