>> announcer: "nbc10 news" starts now. a flurry of bullets, plus an unusual crime scene in philadelphia overnight. we're live with the shooting that nearly killed an incident couple. and a crash and this inferno. we're tracking traffic trouble this morning that this car fire is creating in montgomery county. a dreary day today. the "first alert" radar is tracking rain moving in with it. and another cooldown. good morning, this is "nbc 10

news today." i'm rosemary connors. and i'm chris cato. a dreary day can only get us ready for the weekend, right? >> right, memorial day weekend. >> let's check in with bill henley, the "first alert" forecast. >> the rain holds off until later this morning, but then it stays around this afternoon. the chilliness for this morning will be here for most of the day. quiet right now in center city. the rain is just to the west radar already showing in portions of southwestern pennsylvania making for steady progress. a dry commute this morning, but the amp will not be dry. and it will not be warm either. 40s and 50s right now. 54 in wilmington and northeast philadelphia, philadelphia international is 53 degrees. wind is light. might see sunshine to begin with. the clouds take over 58 degrees at 9:00 and watching showers as we head into the afternoon time frame. rain will continue through the afternoon and evening hours.

neighborhood-by-neighborhood forecast when i'm back in ten. a crash has both lanes of lancaster avenue closed in lower merion county in montgomery county. fire crews tell us the driver lost control near remington road in lancaster county and crashed into a utility pole. it caught fire but driver and passenger were able to get out safely. quite a mess out there. let's find out how it's impacting traffic. nbc10's "first alert" traffic reporter jessica boyington has that. >> we're definitely going to see backups and residual delay it's in area. for now if you're passing through lancaster avenue and remington road where that accident is you can take west wynnewood road to get by as well. it's looking okay through woodhaven. we're just losing the right-hand shoulder. all lanes moving okay. northbound or southbound towards the center city area just a

13-minute trip. currently no problems for amtrak or septa. we'll check in with new jersey coming up in ten. news from overnight. police are looking for the person who shot a man and left him in the middle of the street in philadelphia. and then moments later, that shooting victim was run over by a suspected drunk driver. nbc10's katy zachry is live at police headquarters. and katy what have you learned about this? >> reporter: rosemary since we last saw you, we were at the scene waiting for a tow truck. we're at headquarters where homicide detectives are working to find the shooter. they recovered bullet cases, police say whoever shot the 29-year-old did so the at point blank range. he collapsed on girard avenue around midnight only to be run over by a drunk driver moments later. police described this chain of events as highly unusual.

but they say it could have been even worse because a car driving through the scene was shot several times. >> had it been several more inches over the bullet could have went through a driver door or front windshield and struck this 52-year-old driver. >> reporter: and there was a couple inside that car that was just passing through the scene. so two people in that car do have been hit by this bullet injured, even worse they could have been killed. in custody right now is a 79-year-old man who police say was driving drunk and ran over that shooting victim. police are looking for the shooter. reporting live outside of police headquarters. nbc10 on the screen at delhi and butler street where the victims were both shot in the legs around 120030 this morning. they are expected to be okay. so far police have not made any arrests. the mother of a blind boy

said her son was sexually assaulted at his philadelphia school. the 9-year-old go to the overbrook education center. his mother who we are not identifying said in april her son said he was inappropriately touched by another student in the bathroom. the special victims unit is still investigating but the school district said an internal investigation found nothing to back up the allegation. and now to the hazing at women's softball at st. zwrof'sjoseph's university. one said she was forced to perform a lewd dance and answer explicit questions. they're investigating into the allegations. in ocean county a baby is recovering from injury after an incident involving the family dog. skyforce 10 was over the home in little egg harbor township where that 2-month-old was injured yesterday. police believe the family's pit

bull may have knocked the baby out of the stroller after being scared by the lawnmower. we've learned that the injuries do not appear to be serious. today, family and supporters of abdul jamal. they claim he was unable to speak to his family or lawyers at that time. they say it's consistent to the environment and that the department of corrections with visitation for any prisoners. abdul jamal is serving a life sentence for murdering a philadelphia police officer in 1981. well it seems like we've been talking about patco introducing these new railcars for a year now, that's because we have. >> the upgraded cars will go into service for the first time.

new this morning, if you ride patco between south jersey and philadelphia you will soon experience an upgraded ride. six refurbished patco cars will start rolling next thursday. it's the start of a program to rebuild train cars that have been in service for decades. the upgrades cars had new seats and heating systems and areas for parking bikes and wheelchairs. and happening today, we get our first look at philadelphia's only outdoor roller skating rink. officials will unveil that rink on waterford water park. floating barges opened for the first time yesterday. and the park and roller skating

rink opens for the first time tomorrow. we're looking at an indoor roller skating kind of day today as clouds are moving in and rain will be with us later this afternoon and this evening. and steady light rain will continue through most of the afternoon hours. 57 degrees. look at the cooldown and dry too. 32% humidity. but that will change cass the clouds move in with rain. no rain just yet. but it is moving into south central pennsylvania and heading our way. later this morning, after 9:00 likely see the first rain drops. by 10 a light rain falling in philadelphia delaware and south jersey. even farther north and west in allentown. but this is the area that's going to dry out first as we go into the afternoon hours. the showers will taper off to areas north and west and continue. that's 2:00 in the afternoon. by 5:00 as we're heading in a few scattered light showers in philadelphia. and starting to see some breaks in the rain at delaware at that time. so grab an umbrella as you're

heading out the door. but you'll need your sunglasses for at least the beginning of the holiday weekend. saturday and sunday we'll see a nice warmup in the 80s. but there are changes ahead for memorial day monday i've got the details on the seven-day some i'm back in ten. >> nbc10's jessica boyington is watching all the cameras for us what's happening, jessica? >> we're going to take a look at 295, the black horse pike. you can see an accident taking out part of the right-hand shoulder. about two lanes squeezing by if you're headed southbound. no real problems headed northbound. you see the drive times not affected by this road work. at this point at the black horse pike, still no problem there, only about a 13-minute trip. and we are just getting word of a disabled vehicle out on 422 westbound on the ramp to egypt road. you'll see some problems with travel through that area.

flight from gettysburg faces charges that could put him behind bars for nine years. hughes said he only wanted to bring taxi to the influence of money in politics. a new twist in the bill cosby scandal. model janet dickinson is suing the comedian for defamation. dickinson claimed the comedian raped and drugged her. she's suing him that the comedian victimized when the comedian said the accusations were lies. he's never been charged with a crime. 4:45 now. there's now a state of emergency in effect at a popular california beach that's covered with tar after an oil spill there. a broken pipeline spewed more than 100,000 gallons of oil on to the sand and into the ocean near santa barbara. crews are trying to clean up and collect samples for testing now. the pipeline is owned by plains

all american. it ruptured tuesday night. the coast guard said two oil spills now stretch more than nine mile. no word yet on what cost pipeline to break. in bermuda this cruise ship that got stuck on a reef yesterday is now floating again, thanks to a rising tide. the norwegian "dawn" was departing from a week-long trip in boston after it ran aground. officials are blaming a steering problem. the vessel passed bermuda after it it passed an inspection. pennsylvania is taking precautions when it comes to the bird flu outbreak even though no birds tested positive in pennsylvania they decided to suspend all poultry competitions at state-sa proved fairs and next year. nationwide avian flu has killed 45 million birds in states that does not include pennsylvania new jersey or delaware. however, pennsylvania does have a history with the disease. in 1983 and 1984 an outbreak

killed 17 million birds and today the industry is worth $13 billion with economic out there pennsylvania. it's lights out for a fourth of july tradition in camden county this year. berlin borough cancelled the fireworks show. it attracted thousands of people and the crowd became too rowdy. she says drunken spectators were getting into fights and throwing bottle. they'll still celebrate with a parade. the state approved a rate cut to save the average customer more than $33 a year. new rate goes in effect a week from monday. new jersey natural gas serving more than 500,000 customers in ocean, mont mouth and middlesex

counties. and some production jobs. upper macungie township. students will be saying good-bye to the d.a.r.e. drug program that stands for drug assistance resistance education. the state is dropping that program because of a dispute with the national company. a new group called l.e.a.d. law enforcement against drugs. >> you've got to love that. the police department has been known for unforgettable viral videos like this one. now, they've got something new. it's not about making people laugh. it's about making one special girl smile. police made this video to have

mom got into labor, ran ran into the hospital and they came out and mason was already there. we checked in on the family and everyone is doing just fine. >> announcer: now your "first alert" weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> it's a cool day yesterday. it's going to be a chilly day. chill already in the air. light air and breezy in the 40s and 50s right now. we're watching clouds move into the area. 51 degrees. no clouds yet for philadelphia. cape may dropped to 50 this morning. and it is dry on beach avenue. that will change later today. you will see the rain move in from philadelphia this morning. and then it continues into the afternoon hours. clouds are already starting to take over. no sign of the rain in our area just yet. but it's not far away. it's moving into central pennsylvania that's where steady light rain and some heavier downpours are right now. and they'll be here by later

this morning. so cloudy chilly day today with rain arriving late this morning and sticking around for this afternoon. even in the evening hours. temperatures nowhere near what we talked about two days ago in the 80s. meaning upper 50s and low 60s today. seven-day forecast sunshine is back tomorrow. in fact a nice day on friday. 75 degrees. a bit cooler on saturday. you see the numbers go right back on sunday with bright sunny skies. there are clouds in our future for memorial day monday. with those clouds will come a chance of some showers, possibly even a thunderstorm. but a big warmup too. 89 degrees on monday. into the 90s, tuesday and wednesday. 4:51 now. time to get a check of the roads. >> jessica boyington has been watching the cameras out there. what are you seeing jessica. >> looking pretty quiet on the roads, rosemary. we'll start on the boulevard.

and schuylkill expressway no problems with that. we are watching a disabled vehicle on westbound ramp of 422. and traffic getting by that nicely. in lower merion still an accident scene in lancaster avenue and remington road you want to take wynnewood road or city avenue to get by that scene. we'll talk drive times in jersey coming up. speaking of drive times for jersey, heavily traveled townsend inlet bridge will be closed as crews make that bridge. we just checked on it and we're told that the bridge may stay closed for another three weeks. that means drivers will have to take a much longer detour. head inland take route 9 which is also called shore road and go around townsend inlet. >> be prepared to pay more at

after 33 years of late night television host david letterman says farewell. he did it with the help of some famous friends. >> our long national nightmare is over. letterman is retiring. >> you're just kidding, right? >> the star-studded final show included appearances by some of dave's most memorable guests and a performance from the foo fighters. letterman's signoff was simple thank you and good night. it is the last day of work for many of you ahead of the memorial day weekend.

but then the prices should drama for the summer. let's take a look at the prices right now in the area. philadelphia, $2.85 a gallon. across the river in south jersey, $2.37. always the cheapest. drivers in delaware are paying $2.60. memorial day weekend, as you know, is very difficult, as you mentioned earlier for traffic down the shore. either got to leave early in the morning, late at night. >> spend some quality time in the car with the kids. but this year we may actually run into additional problems. construction from where the expressway meets, could be off the shoulder but delays could be there. drivers say traffic is bearable though, because in the end, you end up at the beach. >> no sense in trying to rush. just stay in the right-hand lane, either way, you're going to get there in the same time. one project that will be cleared, though, construction for the garden state parkway

between toms river and wall. that project will be mostly complete by the weekend. you may be wondering if it's too late to book a place to stay at the jersey shore this weekend. we did a little research and we're told you can still find houses to rent for the holiday and the hotels and motels in places like ocean city and wildwood say they still have rooms available. they tell us they're even offering special deals to try to get you there. at the wild dunes in in ocean city, you can get four nights for $550. and the fifth night is just 50 bucks. in wildwood the blue palms resort is offering three nights for $374. that includes a water park. we'll have more coming up at 5:00. you can next the nbc10 news yap. we could see more rain. we'll have more on that. you're watching "nbc10 news."
