it is memorial day. people across the area are remembering those who died across our area. we have a rundown of ceremonies and other events marking the date. the forecast couldn't be better. sunny and warm for outdoor plans today, but heat and humidity are on the way. what to expect coming up in the first alert forecast. good morning. well come back to "nbc 10 news today." i'm rosemary connor. >> i'm chris cato. what a beautiful shot that was. almost patriotic on this memorial day morning. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley and the first alert forecast. bill, off to a nice warm start. >> we are. 10 to 20 degrees warmer than yesterday morning and it's going to be warmer this afternoon.

until that happens, we need sunshine. clouds overhead they will be thinning out. no sign of any rain with these clouds. that's a mostly cloudy view looking from the delaware. no fog or anything. definitely warm. southerly wind at 6 miles an hour and temperatures that have dropped down into looks like into the 60s for most of the area but there are a couple of spots that have gone to the 50s this morning. alan town trenton, millville all at 59 degrees. 64 degrees in philadelphia international and northeast philadelphia. we're starting off with that. we'll get breaks of sunshine as the temperature climbs 75 degrees at 10:00. 83 at 1:00 with winds out of the southwest at 15 miles an hour. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast and a look at the coastal forecast today when i come back in ten minutes. check of traffic with "nbc 10" with jessica boyington. >> good morning, bill. we are having a slow morning for memorial day. that's definitely what we would expect for a holiday where people get to stay home and

sleep in. 95 around the betsy ross bridge. nonactive work zone. everything is moving along fine. southbound drive times from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway. out the door on to 422. eastbound lanes is where we generally see some tie ups. we can see no problems. 7 minutes up towards the schuylkill expressway. headed towards the airport, we currently have no delays at the philadelphia international airport and we'll check in with mass transit coming up. jessica, 5:32. today we honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country. a presidential proclamation designates 11:00 a.m. as a time of unified prayer and 3:00 as a national moment of remembrance. citizens are also asked to fly their flags at home at half staff today joompt there are plenty of parades paying tribute to the military men and women who paid the ultimate price for our country's freedom.

"nbc 10's" katy zachry is live in brightsdesburg. >> reporter: it's the city's largest parade. organizers tell me it's on pennsylvania's largest parade. this volunteer is out here on the early morning hour cleaning the streets one of many jobs organizers tell me they rely on volunteers to do to put the parade on. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: now when the parade gibbs you'll find high school bands, fancy brigades, string bands, dance clubs and young athletes marching with their teams throughout bridesburg. it winds down several streets including bridge richland. people tell me this parade is the perfect way to celebrate memorial day. they can pay tribute to our veterans while enjoying a community event.

>> the streets are lined with thousands of people. you have to see it to get the true feel. >> and the parade begins at 10:00 this morning. it lasts to around 11:30. it begins at the base of the betsy ross bridge. reporting live in brietszdesburg. almost every community has a way to celebrate. the annual media memorial day parade will march down an eight block stretch down state street. several veterans will be mar marching. and the united veterans council of monroe township is holding its parade at 11:00 this morning. a dedication to active military veterans and fallen veterans will follow with a wreath laying ceremony. the jersey shore is packed. "nbc 10's" matt delucia is live.

matt that last half hour wished they could control what they can. >> reporter: the weather can make a big difference down here. even a little bit of rain can mean thousands of dollars lost at the jersey shore. not this weekend. this is a real beauty out here. up and down the coast line here. i was in sea aisle and avalon. just gorgeous. along the beaches here at the jersey shore. this, after all, is the unofficial start to the summer season. it's the official start for making money as long as the sky stays clear. >> the weather has a big part in it. you know the weather forecasters, if they say it's going to be rainy and cold you know that keeps people away. we don't want to hear that. we want to hear that it's going to be nice out. >> reporter: and still quiet out

here on the boardwalk. seeing a few runners. all decked out in red, white, and blue. we've seen a couple of people cleaning up trash left over overnight. this is what it's all about, summer at the jersey shore. you have the saltwater taffy fudge in here. you see this this does invoke the feeling of the summer season even though it's little chilly out here. several of the business owners tell me that the summer after sandy business was really slow and last year it picked up. they're really hoping for a big windfall this time around. hopefully people will start showing up out here for the final day of memorial day weekend. live on the boardwalk in ocean city, matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." 5:36 now. new from overnight, philadelphia police are looking for a killer after a deadly shooting in the mantua neighborhood. police found a man who had been shot in the head near a basketball court at 41st and

athens stream. the man was tanen to the hospital someone shot a man several times in the nicetown section. we saw shell casings on the ground. medics rushed him to the hospital but he died. no arrests in that shooting either. still ahead, a new "u.s.s. new jersey" is in the works. and a local veteran of world war ii is fighting again this time with time. the sunrise on the horizon. live view from the lowe's hotel. don't worry about the clouds, they'll be moving out. the temperature, 64 at 5:37.

new jersey's pension system is a mess but don't blame teachers and other school employees. over 20 years, teachers have paid more than 10 billion dollars into their pensions, but new jersey politicians have paid just three underfunding teacher pensions by billions. unless the state makes its pension payments the entire fund could disappear in twelve years- threatening over 200 thousand teachers with poverty in retirement. school employees have done their part. now, politicians need to do theirs. it's only fair.

the humidity will stay low. 64 degrees right now in northeast philadelphia. that number will come down as the temperature climbs. right now it's 15 degrees warmer than yesterday. completely dry. there it is. verification that there's rain falling out of the sky. it will be changing. much of the week looking for showers. enjoy the nice weather while it's here. upper 80s for allentown and reading. 75 for mount pocono. middle 80s for doylestown and mount holly. the wind will be kicking in. you feel it at the shore, 78 for rehoboth and vineland and dover into the 80s. gusty wind for philadelphia wilmington and swedesboro with temperatures into the 80s. staying closer to the coast line cooler temperatures. warmer day than we saw for saturday and sunday. 10:00, 67 degrees. the wind will be a bit stronger. at noontime 72 degrees. temperatures in the 70s through the afternoon.

transit, no problems for amtrak new jersey transit or septa. new this morning from overseas. graphic pictures of destruction at the hands of isis. the terror organization released this video showing the results of a battle at an oil refinery in iraq. the story is next. there's not a day that doesn't go by that i don't think of this battle. >> he lived through one of the biggest and bloodiest battles of world war ii. now this veteran is fighting to bring a piece of history to philadelphia.

in washington, d.c. police have made an arrest after a suspicious vehicle with a pressure cooker inside of it was left near the capitol building. officers noted the device and smelled gasoline so they called in the bomb squad. the squad destroyed the pressure cooker which can be used as an explosion -- explosive device. the virginia man is related to charges related to driving without a license. 5:45. the effort to stop isis. new video shows the destruction from recent fighting at an oil refinery in iraq. according to reports, shiite muslims freed about 200 iraqi troops there on friday as isis

tried to take control. this morning there was growing debate in washington over the u.s. strategy in taking on isis which some say clearly isn't working. lawmakers like senator john mccain and john kerry say the airstrikes haven't been effective. john mccain says the u.s. needs, quote, boots on the ground. a local veteran wants a permanent memorial that many historians say changed the course of world war ii. they want a memorial for the battle of the bulge. he's getting push back. since this soaks of the city is devoted to the revolutionary war. the project needs federal approval plus $100,000 to fund construction and maintenance. >> they should remember the

sacrifices that these guys put up their first baptism of fire going into battle. >> "nbc 10" reached out to stan's congressman bob brady to find out if he would support the project. he's interested to learn more. a proud day for the garden state. many of you know that the "u.s.s. camden" will have a submarine that will bear the same name. this will be the third vessel named "u.s.s. new jersey." . senator bob menendez has been pushing this. >> i suggested that it would be great to finally once again particularly in the submarine class recognize new jersey and its long history. >> the new "u.s.s. new jersey" will be completed in about six years. >> there are plenty of events today in our area to observe the memorial day holiday or spend

some time outdoors. in chester county, devon horse show continues today. it will run through the upcoming weekend. history buffs are certainly welcome at valley forge national historic park today. a little bit later on there will be a memorial day observance that includes an audio tour and a bell concert. the more events we want to make you aware of memorial day ceremony at philadelphia's korean war memorial park. start at 11:00 this morning. then at penn's landing, a former pow will speak at a special rededication ceremony at the vee et nam war memorial. at 3:00 a ceremony and wreath laying will be held in washington, d.c. at the tom of the unknown soldier. all good options for the service and sacrifice of the fallen. 5:48. it will be a beauty today. people at the shore have had near perfect weather so far this

the clouds will be thinning out in the pocono mountains. mostly cloudy view from lake wallenpaupack. rain staying farther to the north. wind will be a big factor. it's calm in alan town pottstown and millville. 6-mile-an-hour wind in philadelphia could be gusting to 24 miles an hour and hi gusts this afternoon. that will push the gusts out of here. warmer temperatures. yesterday in the low 80s in philadelphia. upper 80s this afternoon. good news is the humidity stays low. mostly sunny, breezy 80s today with winds out of the southwest 10 to 20 miles an hour. sunshine around. 90 degrees after a morning low of 65. more humid tomorrow and the humidity could fuel late day showers and thunderstorms for wednesday. high of 90 degrees on wednesday. thursday, 87 with a chance of showers and thunderstorms back each day for the rest of the week and into the weekend.

we'll see a possibility of showers and thunderstorms. very warm 89 on saturday and then turning cooler but still a possibility you'll need your umbrella during the afternoon on sunday. about 9 minutes before 6:00 on this memorial day. my guess is that we're really going to start to see the traffic tonight and this time tomorrow morning. >> yeah that's true. traffic will pick up as people return from those destinations. what about the people heading out for any activities this morning. let's find out with "nbc 10's" first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> this morning if you have any activities to do you are heading out to work like some of us, no problems. be starting off on 422 around trooper road you can see at this point the eastbound lanes are generally starting to jam up. only an 8 minute trip from 29 to the schuylkill expressway. heading out around the airport, still free and in the clear 6 or 7 minutes northbound or

southbound. area bridges, no problems in and around the city on the ben, tacony-palmyra and the bristol bridge. still ahead saving the birds. how a program to restore beaches on the jersey shore saved tens of thousands of shore birds as well. this is the season for mishaps and accidents. what you need to know as you head out the door for 1u78summertime fun.

7:30 tomorrow night. >> a superintendant in chester county is speaking out against what he calls the massive burden on testing in state schools. jim scanlon wrote a letter. he criticized the amount of testing required in pennsylvania schools. it's having a negative effect on students' education. scanlon writes learning should be enjoyable and exciting. teaching should be dynamic and innovative. we posted the entire letter on our website. if you'd like to read it go to nbc10.com. a program to restore bay and ocean beaches wrecked by superstorm sandy has also saved tens of thousands of shore birds. scientists feared the birds might die out after the storm wiped out their feeding grounds in 2012. volunteers worked with the government to restore the birds' habitat, particularly along the delaware bay. the population of the red knot birds have held steady and slightly increased since sandy.

in new jersey students in mercer county are making a push to preserve memories of super storm sandy. several other universities have made similar efforts. they want to document the stories of residents and first respond beers for historical preservation. it was a special holiday weekend at the please touch museum. volunteers dressed up as super heroes. the group visits sick or terminally ill children. >> it feels pretty amazing to make a child happy and to see the smiles on their faces and how excited that they get. we hope we brighten their day a little bit. super heroes at yesterday's event included the scarlet wish hawkeye and black widow from the avengers and star lords from guardians of the galaxy. you may find yourself hurting for a hero.

doctors are getting ready for injuries. memorial day is one of the busiest weekends of the year because of biking boating, atv injuries. many traumas can be avoided with proper safety precautions like wearing helmets and seat belts. also, alcohol often plays a role in those types of accidents. raw emotion. that's what a lot of families are experiencing this weekend as their loved ones are returning home from serving overseas. take a look. always a surprise. that's what makes it better. the brothers were deployed for a year in qatar after returning home. they decided to surprise their sister at oak crest high school in atlantic county this week. we got this video from their relative. you can share your videos with us whether it's a reunion with family coming home from folks
