nbc 10 news starts now. the final visit to rome top philadelphia leaders return to the holy city to prepare for the pope's visit to our area in september. and nbc 10 is in italy to see what they accomplish.

south jersey serial pharmacy robber strikes again. the latest spot police say this wanted man hit and the menacing threat he gave a customer there. get ready for some summer heat. our monday will be sunny and hot, even warmer weather and another round of storms are just ahead. be prepared. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary connors. >> i'm vai sikahema. i was a little surprised when i walked out at 3:00 a.m. how warm it was. i think it's cooling down a little bit. let's get more details from our meteorologist bill henley with the first alert forecast. >> the temperatures are falling as drier air starts moving into thebarea. the humidity and the heat were on the high side yesterday. it won't be as humid today. it will still be a warm day at the shore for beachgoers. it will be in the 80s this afternoon. right now it is in the 70s and falling. currently at philadelphia international at 77 most of the areas are running cooler 74 in trenton, wilmington is 73 and 71 right now in pottstown and

allentown. we're starting off in the 70s but a quick warmup with sunshine, 78 degrees at 9:00 and 84 degrees at lunch time today. your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. right now, let's get a check of traffic. should be quiet on the roads at this hour. jessica boyington is watching things. >> 422 around trooper road you can see pretty much empty out there. but eastbound right over here that's where we see most of the delay in the morning hours. the drive time still doing just fine from 29 up towards the schuylkill expressway the westbound lane doing great there as well. the p.a. turnpike the cars are moving along just fine right here headed westbound from route 1 up towards valley forge, about a 22-minute trip eastbound from valley forge up to route 1. currently no problems or delays for mass transit, septa, new jersey transit and patco running on time with no reported delays. we'll check in with 95 coming up. >> thank you, jessica. preparing for the pope.

while you were sleeping a group of business and government leaders from philadelphia arrived in rome to finalize plans for the world meeting of families in september. >> that's right. nbc 10's chris cato joins us again live from rome. chris, organizers have been planning the world meeting for almost three years now. what more could be left to do? >> it's a fair question. this is evolveing, changes bit week. they land at the airport about 30 miles from here about an hour and a half ago. they're currently en route to the hotel, the villa bergasa. the delegation will arrive here in 30 minutes. they have four days of meetings ahead of them. they'll get hard numbers on how many people have registered and which countries are

participating. more so than that they'll have a big security planning session, all about keeping the pope safe. we found out that philadelphia leaders took a few pointers from the last city to host the meeting of families, milan. organizers expect pope francis's mass in philly to join 500,000 more pilgrims than pope benedict. there were no security problems during the pope's visit which she attributed to the fact that italian police are accustomed to the crowds that come with the pope. >> here in italy we are used to having religious happenings catholics mainly but not only catholics. >> reporter: philadelphia officials also talked with milan about transportation how to move all those people. milan used a battalion of buss to shuttle pilgrims to and from

large parking areas set up outside the city. last week we found out that's exactly what philadelphia plans to go to get people in and out of the ben franklin parkway. back to the subject of security there's a big meeting this thursday where some members of the philadelphia delegation will meet with the chief of security for vatican city. we also spoke with mayor nutter about the security challenge that comes with the pope a person who is so famous and also loves to be a man of the people and get involved with the crowd, which presents an even bigger challenge. you'll hear from mayor nutter on that aspect of protecting the pope coming up at 5:00 a.m. live from rome chris cato nbc 10 news. >> thank you, chris. we know you're working long hours and days. take time to get some good pasta the world meeting of families starts on september 22nd in philadelphia. the pope will be here on september 26th and 27th. we'll have you covered leading up to the visit and while he's

here. new from overnight, still no arrests after two cars were stolen from this used car lot in philadelphia's mayfair section. police say a bmw and mustang were stolen from the lot at longshore avenue and kristen street. no other cars were taken or damaged. this morning, police in south jersey believe a serial drugstore robber struck again. this map shows the locations of three pharmacies police say the suspect targeted. one in philadelphia one in haddonfield and the latest last week in woolwich township. nbc 10's katy zachry is live at that last location. what's new in the investigation? >> reporter: yes, rosemary it happened friday night just after 11:00. witnesses tell police this suspect went through the front doors of the store just after 11:00. he was dressed in heavily layered clothing holding a crowbar. we have surveillance video of the suspect. the robbery happened just after 11:00 friday night. according to police the suspect

took a woman who was inside this cvs pharmacy hostage, saying he was going to shoot and kill her if the pharmacy technician did not give him all of the oxcycodone behind the counter. the pharmacy tech handed over the drugs. the suspect tried to steal keys to someone's car to use as a getaway vehicle but he was unsuccessful. as we said at the top of this story, police here believe this suspect is linked to several other robberies and other parts of new jersey as well as philadelphia. we'll talk about the similarities of those robbery coming up in the next half hour. reporting live from woolwich township katy zachry nbc 10 news. the unusual fund-raiser involving dozens of slithering reptiles. a broken community comes together. the show of solidarity in charleston and the message this group wants the country to hear. cooling down this morning with clear skies. right now at 76 at 4:37.

4:40 this monday morning. today local lawmakers are moving feel steam ahead with efforts to enhance passenger rail safety fund amtrak and improve the infrastructure. corey booker and bob menendez will discuss the railroad reform enhancement and efficiency act. a vote on the bipartisan bill is expected sometime next week. the legislation would authorize more than $1.6 billion a year over the next four years. and an additional 570 million in grant money would be available for work on the northeast corridor. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. 20 minutes before 5:00. it's a warm morning but the temperatures are falling at this hour. the good news is we have a little bit of a breeze out of the west/northwest. that's drier air coming in.

not going to be as muggy as it was over the weekend. 75 degrees right now out of northeast philadelphia. there have been clouds overnight. no showers with those clouds. the clouds are moving in the showers will stay clear of our area today. we could be looking at storms later tomorrow. for today, big warmup, 80 for the pocono mountains. look at the upper 80s for allentown, quakertown and reading. 90 degrees this afternoon for mt. holly and norristown and at the shore, it's well into the 80s for atlantic city 85 degrees. just a bit warmer in cape may. look at the delaware beaches, rehoboth 87 this afternoon. 90 for swedesboro. very close for wilmington, 91 in philadelphia today. hot today but getting teamier tomorrow. the seven-day forecast within i come come back in ten minutes. 20 minutes until 5:00 a.m. time to take a look at the traffic out there. unusually pretty good at this time. >> what's going out on there,

jessica? >> we're doing okay so far. a check on 95 these are our cameras on top of cottman avenue. southbound right over here just through a work zone that's actually inactive. taking out that right-hand shoulder but all lanes open. traffic moving through the area just fine. south from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway about a 13-minute trip. if you're heading out the door on to 95 in delaware, no problems there as well. the drive times, northbound or southbound from 295 up toward 495 about a ten-minute trip or under. if you're heading into philadelphia this morning on any of the area bridges currently, no problems for the betsy, the ben, the tacony palmyra, the walt is doing okay too. back to you guys. more philadelphia pools open for the summer a little bit later on. >> we'll show you the latest spots where kids can soon cool off. most of us try to stay away from snakes. we'll tell you why these people were seeking them out this weekend.

search and rescue crews in new mexico say they have found the body of a white house chef who had been missing since earlier this month. overnight we got word that authorities found walter sheeb's body after he reportedly went hiking in the tause area of new mexico. today, four daughters of the late bb king is expected to appear in a las vegas courtroom over claims that their father's business manager stole from him and endangered his health. they claim the manager denied their father proper medical care and changed the locks on his house so he died without family or friends by his side. as displace of placeplays of support

continue, we are learning about funeral services. services for the reverend clemente pinkney$ &l be held on friday. yesterday in addition to showing support for the victims' families, they also wanted to spread the message that hate crimes will not be tolerated. yesterday morning, the emanuel ema church in charleston held its first worship service since the massacre. members of the congregation and visitors sang songs and prayed not just for the victims but also for the alleged shooter. >> we pray for the young man, because he's sick. there's something wrong with him. >> different races, different cultures and different beliefs, all in their holding hands and saying we're going to get through this. >> 21-year-old dylann roof is accused of opening fire at the church last wednesday night.

he is being held on $1 million bond. and people in our area are continuing their support for the charleston community. >> that's right. a philadelphia church with ties to emanuel ame remember the victims over the weekend. worshippers gathered yesterday morning at mother bethel ame church in philadelphia's society hill. they offered prayers for the charleston nine. one attendee visiting from delaware whom we spoke with had this message. >> we want to let, you know folks who, you know feel they can do the types of acts -- you know the type of act that roof did, we want them to know you're not going to win. >> the pastor at mother bethel also had a message for the community. he preached about the need to forgive. those who attended this service at the episcopal church at st. thomas in overbrook thought of the victims. church members lit nine candles

in memory of those killed at charleston. chris christie told a packed church of worshippers that last week's shooting in charpsen to was steeped in racism and hate. >> i was so glad that we began this service with an invocation where we were holding each other's hands, because those hands are the hands that will do the work that needs to be done to end this type of hate. >> christie also told the congregation he's been praying for the families who lost loved ones. family members and friends of a philadelphia police officer who was shot and killed earlier this year gathered yesterday to celebrate that fallen officer's son's birthday. nbc 10 was in upper darby for robert wilson iv's birthday party. here's the 2-year-old. he was the son of police sergeant robert wilson iii.

people in the community pitched in to make the party a reality. they donated food and supplies and even a venue for the party. authorities say wilson was at the store buying a gift for his older son's birthday. a volunteer fire company in northeastern pennsylvania had a fund-raiser over the weekend that many would say featured acts of bravery. it all had to do with snakes. fire department hosted this rattlesnake roundup every year. licensed hunters went into the hoods to gather dozens of reptiles. the snakes were measured and marked, then returned. the event features food and entertainment and draws thousands of visitors. >> all right. it is that time of year again. >> yes, since yesterday, summer is here and the city's pools are opening their doors to the public. officials say during the next two weeks pools will open daily until all 70 are open.

look strong storms as the atmosphere will really be heating up. then this moves in this line of showers and thunderstorms is a cold front that will arrive tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow morning we'll get a warm and muggier start than we're seeing this morning. 75 degrees. that's at 6:00 tomorrow morning. look at the quick warmup during the day tomorrow. 88 degrees. that's by 10:00 in the morning. and then it's into the 90s, flirting with a record high of 97 tomorrow. and that's when we'll start to see showers pop up at 2:00 in the afternoon. could be impacting the evening commute tomorrow. today, it's sunshine. grab your sunglasses. it won't be as humid as it was over the weekend. just hot with much of the area seeing temperatures into the 90s. the weekend is looking cooler 70s for saturday and sunday. we should see the cooler weather arrive even before we get to the weekend. after tomorrow, 96 the high for tuesday, hot, humid conditions. those storms roll through. here comes the drier air.

new castle county. it was posted on social media, a freight train slammed into a car sitting right on the tracks near deer park. the crash happened around 11:30 last night. nobody was inside the car at the time. it's unclear exactly why it was left on the tracks. a former "star wars" actor was arrested yesterday after investigators say he led south carolina deputies on a high-speed chase. investigators say jake lloyd was driving 100 miles an hour before driving off i-95 near charleston. they say he had drove right through a fence and kept on speeding along a parallel road. he stopped after hitting some trees and was immediately arrested. he starred as a young darth vader in "star wars" episode one, the phantom menace. now to some medical news this morning. new research suggests that the hpv vk seen may be helping to reduce the number of cervical lesions that could be precursors

of cancer. still, researchers say the decline could also reflect a change in screening recommendations during that same time period. screenings were no longer recommended for women under 21. so fewer cases of lesions may have been reported. there's a new study linking breast cancer to a once widely used pesticide that is now banned. ddt was used throughout the u.s. until it was banned in 1972. although it hasn't been used in a state since then research shows exposeure could be a contributing factor in the development of breast cancer. study studys show -- >> it doesn't change the level of hormones but the tissue of the breast itself the cells that eventually can be the source of cancer. >> experts say though the u.s. banned ddt, the study is critical because it could show
