nbc 10 news starts now. >> right now on nbc 10 news today, this is the day to save a pet and welcome a new member to your family. we are clearing the shelters and counting on you to help the cause. details are coming up in a live report. the heat and humidity return this weekend with temperatures expected to hover right around that 90-degree mark. here is a live look over center city, philadelphia, where there will be plenty of sunshine to warm us up. good morning. welcome back to nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary connors. it's 5:30 on this saturday. let's get right to the first alert forecast with meteorologist brittney shipp. we really shouldn't be too

surprised by this weather considering it is august. >> that's right. we've seen a pretty mild summer, but as we head into next week, we are going to head into a heat wave, so today's going to be the first day with temperatures expected to push into the 90s. there's a live look outside at cape may. it's a mild start to the morning as well. low 60s in pottstown. still 70 degrees in philadelphia. 67 in wilmington. 66 in dover. at 64 degrees in wildwood and 66 in atlantic city. as you take a look at your city planner, by 10:00 a.m., 81 degrees. by 1:00 p.m., 88. today's high in the region will range between 88 and 91 degrees. sunny and hotter than what we saw yesterday. we are going to start to see our humidity increasing with a southwesterly wind. 5 to 10 miles per hour today. temperatures will be even hotter tomorrow. i'll go over the details on that in my full seven-day forecast. rosemary? >> thanks, brittney. today, nbc 10 and telemundo 62 are helping to clear the shelters. shelters all across our area

will cut the cost of adoption so that more than 2,500 animals can find a family. nbc 10's jesse gary is live at the pennsylvania spca. what do folks need to know if they plan to adopt today? >> reporter: if you're going to adopt, you'll have to bring one very important item with you today. that is this. a government issued i.d. that is part of phase one in the adoption process. filling out the paper work. once that's done, you're going to do what these two little girls did. this is bernie johnson and his daughters yesterday in old city at the paws center. adoption officials want potential pet owners and the objects of their affection to spend time getting to know each other. adoption specialists say it's important to make sure both parties are comfortable with the proposed pairing. >> it's about getting to know both the animal and the adopter to make sure that it's a good match. >> that describes the success

any arrests in this case or a motive. police in west philadelphia are searching for the gunman wanted in a double shooting that sent two people to the hospital. two men were shot in the arm on cherry street just before 2:00 this morning. both are in stable condition. investigators plan to look at surveillance video in that neighborhood to try to identify the shooter. sky force 10 was over this fire scene in trenton last night, where crews rescued a person from inside a house on hills place. in total, three homes caught on fire. at least one of them was occupied. the rescued victim is now being treated at the hospital for burn wounds. the cause of this fire is under investigation. new this morning, a sprint car driver from bucks county is dead after an accident on the track in central pennsylvania. authorities say that james campbell jr. died after striking the wall at williams grove speedway in mechanicsburg last night. the accident happened during

warm-up laps. the track canceled the rest of the racing program. campbell was from feasterville and was not a regular at this speedway. in montgomery county, police are on the hunt for the thief or thieves stealing mail right out of people's mailboxes. investigators tell us a man found open mail inside his trash can last week from six other addresses. they were envelopes that people had put in their mailboxes for the mail carrier to pick up. according to police, personal checks were taken from some of them. detectives are now warning residents to monitor their accounts for any signs of identity theft. some neighbors tell us they're even planning to change their mailing habits altogether because of this. >> i think now, we'll just take it to the post office or put it in one of those secure mailboxes. >> we checked with postal inspectors about how to keep your mail safe. they tell us you should pick it up promptly after it's delivered and don't leave outgoing mail in the mailbox for a long period of time. this morning, four people

are facing charges related to a drug bust at a philadelphia hotel. police made the arrests at the hilton at penn's landing last night. investigators tell us a hotel employee called 911 concerned about suspicious items in one of the rooms. when police arrived, they found what appeared to be a large amount of cocaine. they also discovered a loaded semiautomatic handgun. today in philadelphia and across pennsylvania, minimum wage workers plan to rally for a boost in their pay. afternoon rallies are set for the downtown districts in center city, philadelphia, allentown, lancaster and pittsburgh. community leaders will call on the governor and lawmakers to pass a $15 an hour minimum wage. today in west philadelphia, there will be a celebration for the 50th anniversary of a freedom rally here led by the reverend dr. martin luther king jr. the 1965 rally drew thousands to the intersection of 40th street

and lancaster and haverford avenues. there are several events today to help kids get ready to go back to school. an organization called fathers matter will be giving out school supplies in montgomery county and they'll also be promoting strong families. kids can get a free book bag at carson valley children's society in norris town, but a father or father figure must be with them. fathers matter wants to get dads involved in all phases of their kids' lives. in chester, the living waters ministry will give away 500 bags filled with supplies. in atlantic county, volunteers will help stuff the bus with school supplies. they'll try to fill up school supplies. all of the supplies will go to local kids in need.

kitten, a puppy. adoption fees are reduced. throughout the morning, we'll be sharing all these locations and giving you tips on how you can adopt. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. temperatures heating up heading into the weekend will push into the 90s today. we'll stay there tomorrow. and even into most of next week. here's a look right now at our temperatures throughout the region. at 70 in northeast philly. already at 70 degrees in philadelphia. low 60s in washington township. 62 in wrightstown. 61 degrees in lancaster. 64 degrees in doylestown. 66 currently in dover. a closer look at the atlantic city airport, 66 degrees. your highs around the region today at 88 in wilmington, 89 in totsto pottstown. a little bit cooler closer to the shore. if you plan on heading out to the eagles' preseason game

tomorrow, you can watch the game right here on nbc 10. but temperatures pregame at 82 degrees. kickoff at 85. take a look at your fourth quarter temperature. feels like temperature going to be in the mid 90s. actual temperature at 92. plenty of action on the schuylkill river when the bayada regatta gets under way. the weather should be pretty decent. it won't be raining or anything like that. here's a live look at boat house row. the bayada regatta is the nation's oldest and largest rowing event for the physically disabled. races start at 8:00 this morning. a quick heads up, if you're going to be traveling in this area, parts of kelly drive will be closed from 6:00 this morning until 6:00 this evening. all morning long, we have been telling you about how you can help us clear the shelters today and give hundreds of animals loving homes. but it's not just the pets that will benefit from this widespread adoption event. next, hear from the experts about how a pet can impact your health.

as part of our clear the shelters event that's happening today, we want to show you this live kitty cam, as we're calling it. this is at the philadelphia weather better known as paws. in the top right portion of your screen, there is a cat there just peering by. i actually pass by paws all the time and stop because it's -- i mean, you're just so fascinated to watch these cats move around. right now they're obviously resting. this is one location participating in the clear the shelters event. he's taking a little stretch right there. you can adopt cats, kittens, dogs, puppies all morning long. we'll be telling you about the other locations throughout the area and how you can adopt these pets at reduced fees. there are many reasons to adopt a new pet. but did you know it can be good for your health? health workers say they've even seen it happen, even with patients who are recovering from

serious he serious health issues. >> usually he's licking my whole face. >> shy might be the last word you'd use to describe charlie, a 12-year-old retriever. but stroke patient jane brady doesn't seem to mind at all. >> oh, i just love dogs. it makes you want to come to therapy to play with the dog. >> there's been research studies that show that there are physical, emotional, and social benefits to having dogs. and even other pets as well. >> samantha webber is an occupational therapist. she tells me in her experience, patients are sometimes more motivated when a pet is part of the recovery process. >> they open up, they smile. they'll reach a little further and use that weaker arm a little more for their dogs than they will for me. >> less than a year old, winnie is a therapy dog in training trying to learn from charlie. the pups provide comfort to the patients while they can't be with their own pets at home.

searching for this thief who danced his way into a restaurant and stole a customer's wallet. he and a woman walked into the entree byob restaurant on july 26th. then while waiting for her to use the restroom, he started dancing and grabbed the wallet out of somebody's purse. all of his moves were caught on camera, including the moment he stuffed the stolen property down his pants. from our jersey shore bureau, the borgata says it destroyed playing cards involved in a lawsuit between two professional gamblers. the gamblers have countersued, claiming that the borgata knew of the defects and destroyed the evidence on purpose. now there's no way to see the cards since the borgata says casino workers got rid of them in the regular course of business operations. now your nbc 10 first alert

weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. i'm tracking a potential heat wave for the next seven days possibly, and it could start today with the forecast high in the 90s. plus, we're going to see our humidity return to us, not so much today, but you'll feel the difference by tomorrow and definitely by monday. plus, i'm tracking dry days ahead. so we don't have a great chance of showers or storms in your seven-day forecast. there's a live look outside right now as the sun continues to rise. we're seeing temperatures at 70 degrees in philadelphia, so it is a mild start to the morning. wind speeds out of the west-southwest at about 5 miles per hour and across the rest of the region. we're at 64 degrees in allentown. cape may at 66 degrees. it's going to be a beautiful day to head down the shore. cape may or atlantic city or any of our beaches in delaware. right now throughout the rest of the region, we're at 62 degrees. in the poconos. we're at 64 in blue bell. a little bit warmer, more wild in wilmington at 67 degrees. 68 in trenton.

63 degrees in mount holly. right along the shore here, temperatures in beach haven at 71 and 68 currently in lewis. we do have an air quality alert for today. code orange for you. sensitive groups, you should limit your outdoor activity, so if you have any respiratory illnesses, you definitely want to be careful. maybe jog inside on the treadmill. we don't have a chance or showers today or tomorrow, but notice the one direction is going to continue coming up from the southwest, as we head into the rest of today and into tomorrow. our humidity is going to return slowly, but again, you'll notice the difference as we head into sunday. definitely by monday, it's going to be hot and sticky and steamy. as far as today is concerned, we'll see temperatures at 84 degrees in the poconos. 91 in allentown. 91 the high in reading. 89 in doylestown. 90 degrees in mount holly. we'll stay in the low 80s. nice and comfortable at the shore. it will be an enjoyable day.

88 the high today in drexel hill, and calling for a high of 90 degrees in philadelphia. your shore and beach forecast on this saturday, 82 degrees, and nice for tomorrow. 80 degrees. and then again with our southwesterly wind speeds. our water temperature at 75, so you really can't beat that combination. if you plan on heading out to the eagles' preseason game tomorrow, you can actually either head out there, or you can watch it right here, nbc 10. our temperatures for your pregame at 82 degrees. by kickoff, 86 degrees. kickoff is at 105, and fourth quarter temperatures will be in the 90s. so it is going to be hot out there. make sure you stay hydrated. temperatures at 94 degrees. by monday, we stay in the 90s all next week. speaking of the eagles, the link will be ready for them for the preseason game tomorrow. but quarterback sam bradford will not be playing. next in sports, we'll hear from coach chip kelly and bradford about the decision to sit the off-season pickup.

crews are getting the link ready for the preseason opener. this time lapse view gives us a good look at the work that went into yesterday's painting and preparation. the view comes to us from the newest addition to our sky cam network from inside the link. here's your saturday morning sports. >> hello, i'm amy fadool from comcast sports net. chip kelly has decided his quarterback rotation for sunday's preseason opener against the colts and the sam bradford era will have to wait another week. >> sam will not play. that's my decision. he really wants to play. i don't think he's really happy with my decision, but i just felt he's been out here for two weeks, done a really nice job. he'll get his first work once we get a chance to train with them. >> if i did play this saturday, it was beginning to be six or eight plays. it's not like i was going to play four quarters and i'm missing out on 75 reps in there. like i said, you're disappointed

not to be out there and playing. but i think there's still plenty of time in the preseason for me to get the work that i need done. >> chip kelly added mark sanchez will start at quarterback sunday, but he also said matt barkley and tim tebow will get most of the playing time. tebow says he's looking forward to running that eagles' fast pace offense. >> i'm excited to experience it. i've been able to watch it for so long from when coach was at oregon, to since he's been here and how much success he's had with it. but i'm excited to be able to be a part of it. >> zach ertz will miss their entire preseason after groin surgery. he went down hard wednesday and did not practice at all on thursday. we are just one day away from the eagles' preseason opener against indianapolis. our pregame show is sunday at 12:30. game with the colts is at 1:00. the postgame show follows all the action. nbc 10 is the official tv station of the eagles.

bills hosting the panthers in the preseason game. lesean mccoy's first game in buffalo. one catch from matt cassel. he ran the ball six times for 16 yards. seven on this play alone. bills fell, though, 25-24. phillies in milwaukee last night. lots of talk about a trade involving chase utley, but so far, that's all it is. utley batting leadoff. the phils still showcasing him and it's been working. four hits and an rbi in this game. he's now batting .500 in six games since he's come off the disabled list. his season average is back to over .200. bottom of the third, jonathan lucroy, fly ball. both outfielders got a beat on it. oh! collided. carrera made the catch, but a runner at second tagged and just beats the throw home. that kind of night. phils lose 3-1. that will do it for sports.

i'm rosemary connors. it's just before 6:00 on this saturday. meteorologist brittney shipp is tracking the warm weather out there this morning, and brittney, it was almost starting to feel like early fall and i knew it wasn't going to last very long. >> that's right, and now we have a reminder that it's still summertime as we head into this weekend and next week, we could see temperatures staying in the 90s for weeks. there's a live look. a mild start throughout the region. 64 in wildwood. 65 degrees currently in dover. we're in the 60s in wilmington. 64 degrees in allentown. 60 degrees currently in the poconos. temperatures at the airport in atlantic city at 63. your city planner shows it's going to be a warm day. take a look at 11:00 a.m. by the time you head out for lunch, 84 degrees, it will still be comfortable enough to sit outside. but by 2:00 p.m., now we're starting to get pretty close to 90 degrees, so it's definitely going to be a hot one.
