right now at 11:00, police on the hunt for a driver who hit one of their own and took off. chester police officer is in the hospital tonight after beingthone off his motorcycle. >> good evening. i'm jim rosenfield. officers have clues about the car and its driver. randy is live at chester police headquarters, and randy, what are you learning about the suspect as well as the victim tonight in. >> well, jim, this happened along busy route 291, just across from the casino. we're told this officer is part of the accident investigation division, and today, he had an accident of his own. a serious one. a hit and run leaving him in the
hospital and the suspect still at large. the 12-year veteran was riding back to the station just a few blocks away when he was blindsided head on. his patrol bike tumbled down the street. his body thrown to the pavement. >> i see the officer right there laying down on the floor. >> margarita saw the officer writhing in pain but couldn't find the other driver. >> i have never seeb this car. >> that's because police say the suspect sped off, speeding away in a red pontiac grand prix. >> there's an alert out for the county looking for the car. >> the police commissioner said this officer will survive. he's alert and talking but will stay in the hospital overnight. motorcycle cops are particularly at risk on the road just last week, an off-duty philadelphia officer was killed in a hit and run on his personal bike. >> if you look at it, you have
nothing on your legs on either side of the motorcycle. so when it goes down, you're going to leave a ton of road rash or somebody comes into the side of you, unlike a car, you have nothing here to protect you. >> police in chester are now asking for the public's help. they believe this suspect's car had a green hood or a green trunk. witnesses can't believe he didn't stop to help. >> why you going to run? why you going to do that? leave the officer right there? i think it's not fair. >> and at this point, police are asking we do not release the name of this officer. again, though, he is expected to be okay. winces do say that a number of casino patrons who were in the area at the time stopped to help this officer who was lying in the middle of the street. live in chester, nbc 10 news. >> an arrest tonight in this brazen shooting caught on camera more than a month ago. the suspect ran from a kensington barber shop while firing a high-powered rifle,
killing one man and injured two others. philadelphia police charged him with murder, aggravated assault and violations. one of the man who survived was his intended victim. they don't knee why police was after him. >> a rash of robberies near temple university. the most recent in the 1700 block of fontaine street just west of campus. police tell us a temple student was grabbed from behind as he walked down the street thursday night. his wallet was stolen. a second man had his wallet taken early this morning in the same area. police are reminding student to use the temple shuttle or ask for an eskout if they're walking. >> temple university could soon be cleared of charges he sold technology secrets to china. late today, federal prosecutors filed a motion to dismiss the case. his attorney said it was because law enforcement agents misunderstood the science behind
the case. xi is still teaching at temple but resigned as chair of the department when he was charged. >> just a beautiful sunset over the philadelphia skyline from sky force 10 tonight. great night to be outside now that the heat and humidity are gone. but our chief meteorologist glen hurricane schwartz is tracking storms. >> that's about to change. we have mostly clear skies now. not a whole lot of wind. not a lot of humidity. things are going to be changing. clear skies here, but rain is in ohio and starting to come in to west of pennsylvania already. so it's just a about on our doorstep. 72 in philadelphia now. down as low as 63 in paut potts town, temperatures into the 50s by morning. pretty comfortable when you get out and a nice start to the day. that's the time to get out for
the jogs and walking the dog and have a little golf. but as we go later on during the morning and especially into the early afternoon, that's when the showers start to develop. more on the timing of the rain and who might get hit the hardest with the seven-day in a few minutes. >> we have learned a deadly shooting inside a delaware county home was connected to a child porn investigation. fbi agents killed a man inside this home on hiland avenue this morning. sources tell nbc 10 they were executed a search warrant in connection with a child pornography investigation. shots were fired as the agents entered the home. >> i heard some people say get on the ground, get on the ground. and i heard pop, pop, pop, pop. >> the fbi has not released the name of the person who died but tell us three people were taken into custody today. it's unclear if they're still being questioned tonight. >> a solemn day winds down tonight as we pause to remember one of the darkest events in american history. it's been 14 years now since the
september 11th attacks. >> david scott agnes. >> the somber reading of names by loved ones was part of today's ceremonies in new york. it's been almost a decade and a half since a pair of hijacked planes brought down the twin towers here. grief remains at ground zero. nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks in new york, washington, and pennsylvania. >> here in our area, an emotional day at the garden of reflection memorial. 18 men and women from bucks county lost their lives in the attacks 14 years ago. they named etched here in glass by the fountain. every year, visitors come by the hundreds to the memorial to honor those who lost their lives. this small ceremony in west chester tonight honoring firefighters and police officers who died on september 11th.

the visit of pope francis just over two weeks away, and one quarter of philadelphia's 11,000 hotel rooms are still not booked for that weekend. tonight, city is paking it a point to make people know about the vac aenancies. a pep rally of sorts inside the radson in center city. there is concern that hotels
aren't selling out. there's still about 3,000 rooms available, and mayor nutter is encouraging people to take advantage. he also offered several other tips for making the most of the papal weekend. they include arriving early, making your transportation plans in advance, taking advantage of the free events and doing your homework beforehand. new jersey transportation officials are gearing up for the papal visit. the nerve center is in cherry hill. it's from here they'll be able to monitor roads throughout the region. they'll also communicate with police from here and even remotely manipulate traffic signals throughout the region if needed. >> now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> well, yesterday, we had a whole lot of rain, way too much. we need time to dry out now. we could have a dry start to the weekend. rest of the night, and first thing in the morning, but things are going to change.
showers, even thunderstorms on the way, and then after the weekend is over, we have a week of sunshine. wait until you see the seven-day. we have mostly clear skies out there. 72 degrees. wind out of the south. it's not exactly cooling down out there. the humidity will start to be coming up. that will help increase the threat for the showers and storms. the flood threat for tomorrow is in the moderate range. normally, it wouldn't be, but because we have so much rain yesterday, up to 5, 6 inches in some spots, it won't take a lot of rain to produce flooding. there may be more lightning around tomorrow afternoon than what we saw yesterday, along with gusty winds and even some hail possible in parts of the area. right now, it is nice and comfortable. it's in the 60s, to the low 70s. a few spots will get into the 50s by day break. now, just about everybody had some tremendous weather over the weekend this summer. highlighted the friday, saturday, and sunday going way
back to late june, and look at all of these. those are dry days. every single weekend in august and september, just about all of july. dry. since the fourth of july. philadelphia, and at the shore, they didn't even get rain then. that's ten straight weekends at the shore without any rain. that's going to change here. there is the change. there's the line of showers and storms. it's going to be moving in. it's of course dry right now. basically dry in the morning. then the clouds start to build. as early as midday, we could be seeing a couple showers or storms, and then maybe even some heavier storms later on during the day and into the evening. latest computer models show that new jersey would be the most likely place to get hit hard. then on sunday, we just have a chance of some scattered showers during the afternoon. nothing like this record we have during the day tomorrow. there's sunday with the shower chance, temperatures down a bit.
