you can see that wet weather on the radar, all that green to the left of your screen. the storm wills move through the area today but won't make the weekend a total washout. that's the good news. good morning. welcome back to nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary connors. it's 6:00 on this saturday. let's get more on that weekend weather from first alert meteorologist brittney shipp. good morning, brittney. >> good morning. temperatures will take a hit as well. high 70s, low 80s. but on top of that, the most important thing is that thunderstorms are expected to move in. that's going to affect your weekend plans. there's a live look outside right now where everything is nice and dry. so we will stay dry as we head into the next few hours. we have a game changer over to the west of us. and as we head into the rest of today, you'll notice by at least noon, 1:00, that's when these scattered showers start to move in. by 4:00, they're the heaviest. and parts of salem and cumberland county stretching out to philadelphia, trenton, and then also by 6:00, 7:00, we're

still seeing another round of these showers moving through. after midnight things clear up nicely. and that's going to give way to a little bit more sunshine heading into tomorrow but still a slight chance of showers. we'll see a bit of a mixed bag tomorrow. today our temperatures will range between 76 and 80 degrees. i'll have details on how much rain you can expect today. >> thanks. happening now, an overnight crash on 295 north in new jersey is blocking traffic. the crash happened around 2:30 this morning at the exit 1-b ramp. that's the route 42 ramp. this is as close as we could get to the crash because that ramp is shut down. new jersey state police tell us they are waiting for a tow truck and other crews to come in to help clean up the mess. nobody was hurt. we will let you know when this clears. right now the search is on for a hit and run driver who crashed into a police officer on his motorcycle and then kept on going. jesse gary is live in delaware county.

and jesse, tell us what happened after the accident. >> reporter: after the accident, onlookers rushed to the aid of this injured officer trying to help him as he was lying on the pavement. medics came and rushed him over to the medical center where he was held overnight for evaluation. let's take a look at our video. yesterday's accident -- the 12-year veteran was riding his police motorcycle near 4th and ward streets around 3:15. he was headed back to headquarters on east 7th when he was hit head on by the suspected hit and run driver. a woman was driving to pick up her daughter from school when the accident happened. someone running down a cop and racing off, that's a first. >> all the shooting and hitting and fighting. but the first time i seen

someone hit an officer and left. that's the first time i see that. >> reporter: delaware county and philadelphia police searching for the suspected hit and run driver. the vehicle that he is driving is said to be a red 1990s or 2000 pontiac grand prix with a green hood or trunk. that's what they're looking for. live in chester, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. new this morning, a chester county couple are missing and police are asking for your help to find them. take a look. this is dominic jampo and his wife barbara. they recently moved to east ocean township from sellersville, bucks county. a family member spoke to his parents around 9:30 yesterday morning. they told him they were planning to go to the grocery store. the couple should be in a silver 2007 lexus rx 350 with pennsylvania license plate

hdm-5216. police say dominic is diabetic and needs insulin. if you have any information as to the couple's whereabouts, call police. it was one year ago today when authorities say a man armed with a high powered rifle carried out a deadly ambush on two pennsylvania state troopers in the poconos. the shooting happened outside of the blooming grove barracks. corporal bryan dickson was killed and alex douglas was seriously wounded. the attack set off a 48-today manhunt for eric frein. nearly a thousand personnel descended on the area to help find the accused cop killer. they found frein in an abandoned airport hangar. he was restrained using the handcuffs of corporal dickson. nbc 10 spoke to the murdered officer's father who shared what life has been like the past year. >> every night when i go to work, i say i love you, we miss

you. we're holding our own but then we have our moments. >> state police tell us they have no plans for a memorial today and that they are still trying to moveko4f past the tra. meanwhile, frein is charged with first-degree murder and his trial is scheduled for december. now to a warning for college students in philadelphia. police are investigating a rash of robberies near temple's campus. the most recent incident happened on the 1700 block of fontain streets. that's just west of the university. sky force 10 was over the area where police tell us somebody grabbed a temple student from behind as he walked on fontain thursday night. the thief stole his wallet. earlier that day in the morning, a second victim also had his wallet stolen in the same area. police are reminding students to use the temple shuttle or use an escort if they are walking alone. now to news in delaware county where upper darby

township will participate in national prescription drug takeback day. it's a way to offer safe disposal of unwanted, unused, and expired medication. a collection site will be set up at the high school from 10:00 this morning to 2:00 this afternoon. it's one of several sites designated as a dropoff in our area today. also today, philadelphia boxing legend smokin' joe frazier will get a statue in south philadelphialy. the bronze statue is set to be unveiled at 11th street and patterson avenue. it recreates the moment he knocked down muhammad ali in the famous fight. he was the first fighter to ever defeat ali. the time now is 6:06. two weeks from today, pope francis arrives in pennsylvania. and we have new details on how

from our jersey shore bureau, a tradition of the miss america pageant will happen on the atlantic city boardwalk. today it's the show us your shoes parade. each contestant creates a costume to celebrate the spirit of their home state. the parade begins at 5:00 afternoon if it's not rained out. then tomorrow night the new miss america will be crowned at boardwalk hall. changes in store for us as we head into the start of your weekend. it's a dry start right now. we're not even seeing a whole

lot of cloudiness. but as we push into the rest of this afternoon, we are going to see more rain moving in and also isolated thunderstorms. keep that in mind as you're making your afternoon and evening plans. here's how it's going to progress pushing into the rest of today. closer to 1:00, 2:00, that's when the scattered showers start to move in. by 4:00, more organized stretching down to parts of north jersey, northern part of burlington county. right along the store line we will see more showers and thunderstorms moving in. this is going to linger into the evening hours. especially at the shore. after midnight, everything clears up. as we head into sunday around 6:00 a.m. you'll notice a few clouds lingering and a few showers as well. right now temperatures are at 70 degrees in philadelphia. 58 in pottstown. 59 in allentown. 64 in wildwood. highs around the region today barely make it to 80 degrees for most locations. it's a nice, even spread

everywhere. we'll also see temperatures at 69 degrees for the high in the poconos. now, as we approach tomorrow, even cooler daytime highs expected to stick to about 74 degrees as we head into sunday. i'm tracking how long these cooler temperatures will last. >> thanks, brittney. new this morning, a strong earthquake rocked tokyo, japan. authorities say there is no risk of a tsunami. the magnitude 5.3 quake was centered about 20 miles southeast of the city. there are no reports of major damage, but there are worries that the earthquake could trigger landslides in areas that were hit by heavy rains and flooding earlier this week. next, out of jail and still refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses. hear how kim davis is now trying to prevent gay couples from getting the necessary paperwork in kentucky. and when you think of canned soup, you probably think of campbells, right?

this morning there is a possible break in the highway shootings case in arizona. this morning police have one man in custody. he's being held on charges unrelated to the shooting. over the past two weeks, 11 cars, trucks, and buses have been shot on an arizona highway frightening drivers to the point that they are avoiding certain roads. while police do have one man in custody, they believe there could be more than one shooter in this case. overseas many are dead after a crane toppled onto a grand

mosque. it happened in the city of mecca. that's islam's holiest site. in china, the death toll in last month's chemical warehouse explosion has now reached 173. chinese authorities say they have ended the search for eight people who are still missing. that includes five firefighters. more than a hundred firefighters have died in the blast. an investigation has revealed that the warehouse stored much more hazardous material than authorized including 700 tons of cyanide. back here in the u.s., the kentucky county clerk who was jailed for denying same-sex couples marriage licenses has filed an appeal that would allow her to continue blocking the licenses. kim davis filed the motion yesterday with the u.s. court of appeals. she objects to gay marriage on religious grounds. she argues that all of the same-sex couple who is sued her for a license received one from her deputies while she was in

jail. she says her office should not be required to issue them to any more couples when she returns to work. you saw it right here on nbc 10. republican presidential front runner donald trump's first late night tv appearance. in case you missed it, here's what happened. trump spoke with his reflection, a parody played by host jimmy fallon in a skit where he's supposedly preparing for the interview. >> if you win, is your vice president going to be gary busey? >> look, i love gary. he's fantastic. but more of a supreme court justice, in my opinion. vice president is a very serious job, so i'm probably going to go with somebody else. i would say maybe kanye west. >> the real trump got a few moments to talk about how he would create jobs, quote, just

by doing it. and how he would help the economy. rick perry is out. the republican governor from texas announced yesterday that he is suspending his presidential campaign making him the first candidate in a very crowded field from either party to end his white house bid. scott walker was the first republican presidential candidate to weigh in. >> governor perry is a good friend. a governor who's got a great track record, governor perry. and certainly it's unfortunate he won't be part of this debate going forward. >> perry says that he looks forward to a quiet country life with his family. this, by the way, is the second time that perry has fallen short for a bid for the white house after his failed 2012 campaign. now to the democrats and hillary clinton's e-mail scandal. the justice department is now affirming former secretary of state clinton had the right to delete her person e-mails.

it comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by judicial watch, an advocacy group. they asked a judge to issue an order ensuring all of her e-mails were preserved. but the judge said her personal e-mails are not subject to public record. good morning. temperatures today staying closer to average and cooler than yesterday. it'll be a dry start. but then afternoon thunderstorms are expected to move in and cooler temperatures will also move in heading into tomorrow and monday. so we'll head for the 70s and that's going to start for some areas today. right now look outside as the sun is coming up. we're seeing clear conditions, just a few clouds over the philadelphia skyline. 70 degrees. winds at about 5 miles per hour. our humidity continues to rise to 87% right now. mostly cloudy skies right now

for cape may. temperatures at about 64 degrees. our satellite radar shot here shows we're starting to see these clouds move in from the west. starting to move into the lehigh valley and the poconos. you can already see the showers are right off to our west. they'll continue to march towards us as we head into the rest of today. so our futurecast shows us that we are going to see this area of low pressure swing right through our area. and that's going to start closer to 1:00 p.m. and continue on and off throughout the afternoon. after midnight we will see more clearing and we should see a mostly dry sunday. definitely cooler and we'll maintain a slight chance of showers on sunday as well. after the thunderstorms as we go into the rest of today, high of 69 in the poconos. 76 in allentown. mid-70s in quakertown. 77 in norristown. 78 in trenton. mainly in the high 70s alo. 77 will be the high in

wilmington. that's going to mainly be the range between 76 and 80 degrees with thunderstorms expected. wind speeds out of the south 5 to 10 miles per hour. then your seven-day forecast shows that we'll see temperatures drop down as the front moves through. that's going to help drop the temperatures about five degrees between today and tomorrow. into monday we are staying in the 70s with breezy conditions. if that's too chilly for you, we warm things up on tuesday. we stay into the mid-80s next week. next, pope francis comes to our area two weeks from today. hear how montgomery county is preparing for his visit with the help from the national guard. and we are just two days away from the start of the regular season. in sports, eagles owner jeff lurie talks about the team's chances.

can't believe it's already here. we are now just two weeks away from pope francis's visit to philadelphia. he's staying at st. charles seminary in winwood, montgomery county. and officials have just released new information on security efforts throughout the area. 300 national guard members will be deployed throughout the

afternoon. good morning. welcome back to nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary connors. it's just before 6:30 on this saturday. meteorologist brittney shipp is keeping her eye on the radar. >> it's dry right now so as we head into the afternoon, that's when we're going to start to see these isolated showers and thunderstorms moving in. so you definitely need to keep your umbrella handy as we go into the rest of today. live look outside right now where we're seeing mainly overcast skies too start for philadelphia. 53 degrees in mt. pocono. 58 in pottstown. 70 degrees in philadelphia. 67 in wilmington. and 63 degrees in millville. temperatures along the shore in wildwood in the low 60s. and our city planner shows us we stay dry just about until 1:00 p.m. by 2:00 we'll dealing with thunderstorms. temperatures of 78, our high today between 78 and 80.

so again a dry morning. you can get a few errands in. but after we get to the afternoon, 1:00 p.m., that's when we'll see a better chance of the thunderstorms developing in our area. i'll have more details coming up in my full forecast. we have some new information now on that crash that has a ramp on 295 closed. we just got off the phone with new jersey state police and they tell us that the earliest that the ramp will reopen is 7:30. here's what we know. a tractor-trailer overturned around 2:30 this morning at the exit 1 ramp. that's the route 42 ramp. this is from 295 north. this is as close as we could get to the crash because that ramp is still shut down. the wreck is being removed right now. as soon as we get another update, we will pass it along. a delaware county police officer is in the hospital this morning. he was hit while on his motorcycle. the other driver just kept going. jesse gary is live at police

headquarters. what do police know about the driver? >> reporter: a vague description of the man behind the wheel but nothing substantive. however, they do say he was driving a 1990s or 2000 model red pontiac grand prix with a green either hood or trunk. that's the vehicle they're serging for. they do not believe this driver targeted the officer. they believe it was an accident. however, driving away from the scene of the accident, that is a crime. police say the injured officer is a 12-year veteran. now, he was riding his police motorcycle near 4th and ward streets on his way back to police headquarters around 3:15. the driver sent him flying 30 feet from the crashes motorcycle 37 we spoke to the commissioner who said motorcycles offer little protection in an accident. >> if you look at it, you have nothing on your legs on either

good morning. everything is dry right now. but change is on the way. you can see the clouds starting to move in from the west. as we show you a closer picture, you can see the clouds are developing over the philadelphia skyline. but we'll zoom out the picture and show you what's off to the west of us. into our area as we kick off the weekend. so we've been really lucky over the past few months to stay dry over the weekend, but we're going to break our good luck

streak here as we head into today. by noon we'll start to see a few of the scattered showers throughout the area. we progress the model even more close to 3:00, 4:00. that's when we see more moderate downpours stretching to south jersey and near cumberland and salem counties. then to 7:00, 8:00, still dealing with these thunderstorms. that's going to be closer to cape may moving outside of dover. by 11:00, midnight, we're pretty much done with everything. we'll start to see more clearing. so heading into the afternoon and evening, expected downpours. then we'll notice more clearing as we push into tomorrow morning. with the slight chance of showers still lingering into sunday. but we will mainly stay dry. highs around the region today staying mainly in the mid-70s to high 70s. much cooler than we've been used to below average. even cooler temperatures on the way. more details on the way. >> thanks. today in delaware county,

to 610-624-4111. or vote on nbc10.com. i'm amy fadool. have a great day. the papal visit is now just over two weeks away. about one-quarter of philadelphia's 11,000 hotel rooms are still not booked for that weekend. it's a little bit of a concern so the city is making it a point to let people know about the vacancies. it was a pep rally of sorts inside the radisson blue warrick in center city yesterday. there is concern because hotel rooms are not booking. there are still about 3,000 available and mayor michael nutter is encouraging people to take advantage. here's something some of you in center city have been wondering about. will i get my mail when the pope is in town? thursday the 24th, the big blue collection boxes will be removed from center city.

we've had a nice dry stretch on the weekend really for the past couple of months. now it's going to come to an end. but we will also see cooler temperatures. so we'll get a break from the heat. but then the heat's going to be right back as we head into next week. live look outside right now. we are seeing mostly cloudy skies over philadelphia. 70 degrees, the sun is out as well. so it's more of a mix. speeds out of the west/southwest at 5 miles per hour. take a look at cape may. 64 with mostly cloudy skies. so we're seeing more of a spread but it's a chilly start. if you're closer to the lehigh valley this morning. kurnts temperature at 53 degrees in the poconos. 59 in allentown. 64 in atlantic city at the airport. 65 in dover. and temperatures at mt. holly in the 60s as well this morning. sat lie radar shows we're starting to see these clouds moving in from the west nap is an indicator that changes are on

the way. that's what's going to move into our region. you can see all the rain stretching into parts of cleveland, starting to move into d.c. progressing the model here, we'll start to get this rainfall in our region. but it won't be until about 1:00 p.m. that's when we'll see thunderstorms closer to cape may. at the shore closer to 4:00 p.m. you might want to reschedule the beach trip for today. we will stay mostly dry tomorrow with a slight chance of showers so that's an improvement. as we go through 5:00, 6:00, better chance near allentown. more thunderstorms expected. and then another round closer to 9:00 p.m. for the lehigh valley. after midnight, that's when we see more clearing. this entire system rotates up to the northwest of us. and by tomorrow morning we'll have a dry start to the day. but a slight chance of a few lingering showers on the back end as that area of low pressure continues to rotate out of our

region. 75 will be the high in allentown. mid-70s in quakertown. 77 degrees in vineland. around the philadelphia area, high 70s expected for us. and temperatures at 77 degrees. as we head into tomorrow on tunz sunday, we'll be cooler. take a look at these highs mainly staying in the low to mid-70s. a cool front is going to cool us down. drops those temperatures by sunday. monday we recover a little bit. then we push back into the 80s by tuesday.

they're getting ready to ring in the jewish new year. members of the jewish faith celebrate rosh hashanah tomorrow beginning at sundown. nbc 10 was in northeast philadelphia yesterday where employees of barclay caterers were hard at work making meals for rosh hashanah. they're one of the few kosher caterers in the philadelphia area. >> well, we've been prepping all week. we start monday and everybody picks up their orders on sunday and we have a lot of rosh hashanah dinners. >> rosh hashanah marks the start
