today we mark a tragic anniversary. one year ago two state troopers were ambushed in the poconos. one died, the other seriously wounded. we'll update the case against eric frein. it will be a wet start to our weekend. i hate to tell you. you can see the showers moving in from the west on the first alert radar. how much rain to expect and when. that's all coming up in the forecast. good morning. this is nbc 10 news today. i'm roess mary connors. it's 8:30 on this saturday. let's get to the weekend weather with brittney shipp. i didn't know we could take any more rain after the storms this week. what a downpour. >> you could think the atmosphere would have nothing left to give us, but we'll see another round of thunderstorms as we head into the afternoon and evening. there's a live look outside right now. but we are seeing a mostly cloudy start to the day. if i switch over to radar, you can see that the clouds are

increasing now and we are tracking rain off to the west and off to the southwest of us and this is a system that is going to roll through. it's a cold front which means it's going to leave us cold after it moves through. tomorrow is going to be a lot cooler than what we'll see today. by 2:00 p.m., you should notice a few more sprinkles and light rain in the area as we progress the model closer to 6:00 p.m., the heaviest rain is off the shore in atlantic city. lancaster county, lehigh val valli and the poconos. we could see a few lingering showers. mostly cloudy skies. for the rest of tonight and then as we head into sunday, we start to clear things up. we also cool things down. temperatures are going to stay in the mid-70s tomorrow. today high 70s. some locations even the 80s. right longs the shore, it's going to be a stormy day. >> thanks, brittney. we'll check with you shortly. this morning a police officer in delaware county could be released from the hospital

after he was injured on the job by a hit and run driver. jesse gary is live. there's a bit of irony in the case because the officer is ahead of the department's investigation division. >> that is exactly right. and now he is also the central witness in a crime that put him in the hospital. let's look at our video. police say the officer was a 12-year veteran who was riding his police motorcycle near 4th and ward streets. the suspect driver cut him off sending him flying past the crashed motorcycle. margarita was driving to pick up her daughter from school at the time the accident happened. she has seen a lot of crime in chester but someone running down a cop and then racing off from the scene, that's a first for her. >> i've seen a lot of shooting and hitting and fighting. but the first time that i've

seen someone hit an officer and left. you know, it's the first time i see that. >> reporter: the officer is being held at krozer chester medical. police here are trolling for the suspect's vehicle. we'll talk mb about what they're looking for and who's behind the wheel coming up in the next 30 minutes. jesse gary, nbc 10 news. >> we'll see you then. a couple in chester county is missing this morning and police are asking for your help to find them. this is dominic jampo and his wife barbara. they recently moved into the bellingham retirement community in east goshen township. according to police, a family member, their son spoke to his parents around 9:30 yesterday morning. they told him they were planning to go to the grocery store. the couple should be in a silver 2007 lexus rx 350 with a pennsylvania license plate of

hdm-5216. dominic is diabetic and needs insulin. if you need any information as to the couple's whereabouts, police would like to hear from you. it was one year ago today when federal authorities say a man armed with a high-powered rifle carried out a deadly ambush on two pennsylvania state troopers in the poconos. the shooting happened outside of the blooming grove barracks. bryan dickson was killed and alex douglas seriously wounded. it set off the manhunt for eric frein. nearly a thousand federal, state authorities descended to find the cop killer. they found frein in an abandoned airport hangar. yesterday nbc 10 spoke to the father of the murdered officer by phone. he shared what life has been like for his family over the past year. >> every night when i go to work, i say i love you, we miss

you. we're holding our own, but then we have our moments. >> state police tell us they have no plans for a memorial today and that they are still trying to move past the tragedy. meanwhile, frein is charged with first-degree murder. his trial is scheduled for december. the south jersey teen who died at a friend's sleepover will be laid to rest later on today. friends and family will pay their last respects to 14-year-old kara lemanowicz. her service will be at 9:30 to 11:00 this morning in gibsboro. authorities say her death is not suspicious. they think a medical condition may have played a role. now to a warning for college students in philadelphia. police are investigating a rash of robberies near temple's campus. the most recent incident happened on the 1700 block of

fontain street. sky force 10 was over the area where police tell us somebody grabbed a temple student from behind as he walked on fontain thursday night. the thief stole his wallet. earlier in the morning, the second victim also had his wallet taken also in that area. use the temple shuttle or use an escort if walking alone. if you live or work in center city, philadelphia and have been wondering about the postal service, here's the deal. on thursday the 24th, those blue collection boxes will be removed from center city. on friday the 25th, four center city post offices are adjusting delivery schedules. check with your carrier. on saturday and sunday the 26th and 27th there will be no delivery or collection. now, the day after the pope leaves, on monday the 28th, everything will go back to norm normal. we are now just two weeks away

from the visit to philadelphia. he is staying in montgomery county and officials have just released some new information on security efforts throughout the area. 300 national guard members will be deployed throughout the county. and doctors have joined the ranks to help respond in case of an emergency. major concern right now in all this is traffic. >> we'll position gator-type vehicles throughout the area in case we have emergency care on the highways that ambulances can't get to. we'll have water staged throughout the area. we'll also have power bars, that type of stuff in the event of gridlock. >> hazmat and s.w.a.t. teams will also be deployed. for several weeks, a gunman has trzed an arizona highway. there could be a break in the case. details ahead. one, two, three! >> black knights! >> and later the scores and

good morning. i'm meteorologist brittney shipp. let's look outside right now. we are starting to see clouds developing and moving in from the west. it's just ahead of the rain that will get here as we get into the afternoon. let's show you the forecast. closer to 2:00 p.m., that's when the rain will move in. it will start off light, a few spotty showers. by 2:00 p.m., closer to cape may, atlantic city. think we see the heaviest rainfall along the shoreline at ath less thantown at 6:00 p.m. still dealing with heavy downpours. we do expect thunderstorms with this system. that's going to move through closer to 10:00 p.m. we'll still have a few lingering showers. that's going to give way to cooler temperatures tomorrow with just a slight chance of showers. tomorrow is mainly dry with the exception of that light chance.

expect temperatures to stay close to average. between 76 and 80 degrees. i'm tracking cooler weather tomorrow. i'll have that in your seven-day forecast. new this morning, more than 80 people were killed when two explosions ripped through a crowded restaurant in central india. police in india say a cooking gas cylinder exploded and triggered a second blast of mine detonators that were stored illegally next to the restaurant. rescuers recovered 82 bodies from under a heap of rubble and some concrete slabs. 35 others have been hospitalized with injury. this morning, 107 people are dead after a construction crane toppled over last night crashing into a grand mosque. it happened during a violent rainstorm in the saudi city of mecca. that's islam's holiest site. right now crews are searching through the rubble for anyone

who may be trapped. back in the u.s., there are mandatory evacuation orders in place in california. the butte fire have flames so intense that they're spreading fast. they're even swirling out firenadoes. the wildfire has now grown to over 50,000 acres in the matter of three days. and more evacuations as i mentioned are now underway. now to a possible break in the highway shootings case in arizona. this morning police have a man in custody. right now he's being held on charges unrelated to the shooting. over the past two weeks, 11 cars, trucks, and buses have been shot at on an arizona highway frightening drivers to the point they're avoiding certain roads. police believe there may be other suspects involved in these shootings. the time right now is 8:41. still ahead, we'll introduce you to this week's wednesday's child. but first take a live look outside at the center city

evening hours. and then with this cold front that's going to help trigger the storm, we will see cooler temperatures. we'll see our temperatures dropping to the mid-70s by tomorrow. a live look outside right now. you can see throughout the morning we see more clouds. it looks even more gray out. and so that's going to be the trend as we head into the next couple of hours before the rain gets here. for philadelphia, 70 degrees. winds out of the east at about 5 miles per hour. our humidity at 87%. across the rest of the region, low 60s in allentown. cape may is at 70 degrees with still lots of sunshine. so the clouds haven't quite made it yet to cape may. temperatu temperaturewise, we're at 64 degrees in mt. holly. and the atlantic city airport, 67 degrees. satellite radar shows within the last 15 minutes we've seen these clouds really increase over philadelphia and also wilmington. starting to move into parts of

atlantic city. not quite there in cape may. and you'll notice the leading edge of all of this precipitation that's going to head our way into the next several hours. toronto through buffalo to washington, d.c. and as we progress the model, you'll notice by 1:00, that's when we'll begin to see the light rainfall moving in, a few sprinkles. then by 2:00, 3:00, things pick up in intensity. this is when we start to get our thunderstorms. and they're mainly going to be combined closer to atlantic city. also parts of allentown into the poconos. moving into lancaster county. and this is going to continue on and off at least through 8:00 p.m. so we'll see another round just to the north of wilmington. it will not be until after 10:00, 11:00 that we start to see a little bit more clearing. and we will see dry conditions heading into sunday. but cooler temperatures expected for us. so right as that cold front goes through, we'll see cold air ushering in behind it. 69 will be the high in the

poconos. 76 in allentown. right near the shoreline, 79 degrees. almost 80 but not quite there. and across the philadelphia area, 78 degrees. same thing in wilmington. tomorrow will be even cooler. notice the temperatures staying in the mid-70s. a few spots will barely make it to 70 degrees. but today closer to average between 76 and 80 with afternoon and evening thunderstorms expected. keep that in mind as you're making your plans, running your errands, and enjoying this weekend. forecast shows we warm right back up heading into next week. coming up next, the hottest action on the local gridiron. it's the nbc 10 high school blitz when we return.

this morning a delaware county police officer finds himself in the middle of an investigation after someone crashed into his motorcycle and took off. we're live with details about the vehicle cops are looking for. rain will roll into our region a little bit later on. you can see all that green on your screen. that's what we're talking about. will it be a weekend washout? we'll fill you in in the first alert forecast. good morning. welcome back to nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary connors. it's 9:00 on this saturday. brittney shipp is tracking the showers and the storms. >> that's right. they are going to move in into the next couple of hours. still dry, but i'm sure you noticed that the clouds are increasing over the philadelphia skyline. and that means we are going to see rain shortly after. so a closer look now at our satellite radar shot. it shows where that system is. it's just moving out of pittsburgh. it's washington, d.c. right now. and we'll continue to see it moving into our region. there's the clouds that have

covered. i'll show you the timing here between 1:00 to 3:00 when everything gets going. we'll start to see the heavier downpours, that's the yellows and oranges on the screen. by 7:00 p.m., some of the heaviest rain is up the shore in atlantic city and starting to move into berks county. it won't be until right around 10:00, 11:00 p.m. that we start to see most of these isolated showers and thunderstorms tapering off. but this is associated with a cold front. that's going to cool us down even more. expect below average temperatures at least 5 degrees below our average which is 80 degrees for this time of year. and if you plan on going down to the shore or delaware beaches, stay in the high 70s today. it will drop down to 73 tomorrow. right now the search is on for a hit and run driver who crashed into a chester police officer on his motorcycle and then kept on going. jesse gary is live at chester

police headquarters. do investigators have any leads in this case? >> reporter: there is a vague description of the driver at the wheel, but nothing really substantive. there is a description of the vehicle although. a 1990s or 2000 model red pontiac grand prix with a green hood or trunk. that's the vehicle investigators have been searching all night for and all during the early morning hours. police say that car was seen speeding from the scene that injured the veteran 12-year officer. investigators say he was riding his motorcycle near 4th and waro headquarters. the pontiac allegedly cut him off sending the officer flying 30 feet from his motorcycle. he was left writhing in pain on the pavement. we talked to chester pd's commissioner who said he knows the risks of riding. >> i rode a motorcycle in the department. i rode one in my private life. people just don't look and see.

i've had similar incidents as officer hoffman had and it's just, you know, a matter of your ability to avoid the problem. >> reporter: medics transferred the officer to crozer medical center. he could be released at any time. digging into the numbers we found there has been an increase in the number of traffic-related fatalities for for officers from 2013 to 2014. i know this wasn't a fatal accident, but he was injured. it just shows there is an extreme risk for those officers out on motorcycle patrol. again, police looking for that suspect vehicle. if you see a car matching that, call your local police department. jesse gary, nbc 10 news. new this morning, a man is recovering after being shot in camden. police tell us the shooting happened around 6:30 this morning on south 7th and sylvan streets. we were there as police began their investigation at the scene. they wouldn't say if they've made any arrests yet. we will keep you posted.

morning. the fbi was executing a search warrant in connection with a child pornography investigation. witnesses say shots were fired as the agents entered the home. >> i heard some people say get on the ground, get on the ground. and i heard pop pop pop pop pop pop. >> the fbi says the agents raided three houses yesterday all in connection to the pornography investigation. they took three people into custody. it's unclear who was shot and killed on that raid. the papal visit is now just two weeks away and one-quarter of philadelphia's 11,000 hotel rooms still not booked for that weekend. now the city is making it a point to let people know about the vacancies. it was a pep rally of sorts inside the radisson blue wharf in center city yesterday.

the kentucky county clerk who was jailed for denying same-sex marriage licenses has filed an appeal that would allow her to continue blocking licenses. kim davis filed the motion yesterday with the u.s. court of appeals. davis objects to gay marriage on religious grounds. she argues that all of the same-sex couples who sued her for a license received one from her deputies while she was in jail. she says her office should not be required to issue them to any more couples when she returns to work. last question and be honest. if you win, is your vice president going to be gary busey?

happening now. 50 septa bus drivers are putting their skills to test in a friendly competition during the annual septa bus rodeo. it's all happening at the cornwell heights station in bucks county. they will navigate up obstacle courses. the winners will go on to represent septa in the international bus and maintenance rodeo. good morning. it's a dry start to saturday morning. things are changing for us. we do have a chance of thunderstorms as we go into the rest of today. and then cooler temperatures in store for us. today will be cooler than yesterday and we'll drop is few degrees heading into tomorrow. a look outside right now at the link where we're seeing mostly cloudy skies. temperatures at 71 degrees in philadelphia currently winds out of the east at 3 miles per hour.

across the rest of the region, we're at 67 degrees in allentown. cape may, still sunny skies at 74. we will continue to see our clouds increasing heading into the rest of your late morning hours. our current temperatures in northeast philadelphia, 73. 67 in pottstown. and we're at 65 in the poconos along the shoreline mid-70s. even spread with the temperatures. but we will see changes in the next few hours. radar shows within the past 30 minutes or so we've already seen an increase in the cloudiness here and we see the showers moving into parts of lancaster county and berks county. we have this entire storm system that will transition towards us. an area of low pressure is going to move right through our area and that's going to trigger some of these thunderstorms for today. by 2:00 p.m., that's when we'll start to see a bit more activity. it'll start off really scattered and light and spotty, but it

will pick up into 2:00, 3:00. we'll see heavy downpours in new york city, near allentown, lancaster county by 8:00 p.m. still dealing with all of these downpours throughout our area. it won't be until after probably 11:00 p.m. that we start to see most of the system pull away and we're left with just a few little sprinkles before we clear up heading into tomorrow. sunday is expected to stay mainly dry, but we could see a few little showers moving through on sunday. and also expect cooler temperatures by sunday as well. 70 degrees will be the high in the poconos today. 76 in allentown. and 79 in atlantic city. around the philadelphia area, our high today right around 79 degrees. we do expect to see those isolated thunderstorms by the afternoon. sunday will be even cooler. take a look at some of these temperatures. v# for philadelphia. low 70s for wilmington.

long hair. he came to us as a stray and he's been with usyd0kñf÷g only t three weeks. so he's fairly new. he's very social. he likes to be held. very friendly. he's a little bit angry at the harness. getting used to it. >> i know this happens all the time when we have pets in the studio. they get a little nervous. we understand. >> first time on air. >> normally you guys have events week to week. you're taking a break but you have a special promotion for cats. >> we do. for adult cats over six months their adoption fee will be cut in half until the 19th. so everyone should be sure to come in before then to pick out their kitty love. >> that includes mr. puff here. >> it does include mr. puff. mr. puff also had a bit of a cold the last couple of days. f our kitties at the shelter are running a cold. we're also running a promotion for them. anybody getting a kitty with a
