nbc 10 news starts now. right now on "nbc 10 news today," investigators have been working through the night to get the tracks ready for the morning commute after a deadly train

derailment yesterday. nearly 24 hours later we're still working to learn more about the two people who were killed and why they were on the tracks. marching to victory. villanova competes for the national title tonight. we're live in houston, talking excitement, what to watch for in tonight's game and how you can get involved right here at home. and look closely. your eyes are not deceiving you. that is spring snow in the poconos and not manmade as vai so nicely pointed out as well as bill henley. a live look from our camera at camelback mountain. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today," i'm katy zachry. >> i'm vai sikahema. we have snow there. we have rain later this afternoon. we have pamela osborne who's at the ballpark. >> right, right. >> good thing they're on the road. bill henley is here with the forecast. what do you make of it? >> we have rain coming in this afternoon, even though we're starting to see breaks in the

clouds. as we're getting closer to sunrise, we're seeing a sliver of the moon. the clouds will break. the sunshine will not last all day. we're tracking a few sprinkles in some of the suburbs with some showers, scattered light showers for the reading area and allentown and farther to the north. the snow not looking impressive. that is snow in northeastern pennsylvania and northern new jersey. that will keep heading east. cold in the mountains but well above freezing for allentown, reading and pottstown. 42 degrees in philadelphia. that's our starting point. we're see a big warmup before the heavier, steadier rainfall arrives during the day today. a scattered shower first thing this morning. by 11:00, 60 degrees as southwesterly winds develop and we'll be in the middle 60s at 2:00 on the verge of some rain moving into philadelphia. we'll go through the forecast neighborhood by neighborhood when i'm back in ten minutes to show you when that rainç will moving into your area. jessica boyington right now is watching your first alert

traffic. >> we're doing a quick update on the roosevelt boulevard, these cameras around 9th street. the accident cleared out of the way. on the northbound side we had an accident in outer lanes. they are clear again. to newark service for septa is running again on a regular weekday schedule. but we are dealing with at least 30-minute delays headed inbound, also partially because amtrak and septa are sharing tracks. tracks two and three are out of that service this morning. no outbound service from darby station to highland station and outbound trains will operate from 30th to university and express to marcus hook. a few minutes after 6:00 a.m. this morning, the train involved in the deadly derailment has been moved from the tracks. >> the train hit a piece of construction equipment yesterday morning, killing two amtrak workers and hurting others that were on the train. nbc 10's monique braxton is live for us in trainer, delaware county this morning with the latest. monique, what can you tell us?

>> reporter: in the past two hours we've been watching activity on the tracks in trainer. we have seen three amtrak trains come through. we've also seen two septa trains passing by. we've been watching the repairs overnight. the goal is to lessen the disruptions in the morning commute. >> we now have our second d.o.a. located at the impact sight of the backhoe. >> reporter: a sad announcement yesterday with, learning two people were killed and more than 30 injured when amtrak's pal metmet toe train 89 slammed into a backhoe. delaware county medical examiner's office plans to release information after performing autopsies today. the ntsb confirmed one of the deceased was the operator of the equipment.

u.s. senator chuck schumer of new york said the other person killed was a supervisor. we're also learning they had decades of experience with amtrak. questions this morning, what happened? what caused the train carrying 348 crew members and passengers to collide with the backhoe on the tracks? it's a question congressman bob brady wants answered. >> this was a communication, it had to be some type of communication failure. any time there's an issue and a problem, an accident, it does showroom for concern. >> we were sleeping and we woke up to a big boom and smoke. >> it really felt like an earthquake. >> reporter: passengers told us they saw smoke and debris flying. an ntsb investigator says the data recorder and videotape from the locomotive that's considered valuable in this investigation have been recovered. chester city's mayor plans to hold a press conference in just

the first time since 1985. nbc 10's matt delucia is live in houston, texas this morning. they won 34 games this year so far. the next one is the most important. >> it is the most important, vai and katy. one more game. that is it. villanova's been considered the underdog by many and consider this, something to think about, north carolina has beaten villanova five out of six meetings in the ncaa tournament. what a time to turn that around, right? so how do the fans respond to that? well, they go to church. take a look here. this is one of the events where fans and alumni have been able to meet up. a mass was held yesterday morning at the team hotel just a few hours after that big win against oklahoma on saturday. some of the fans that i've been speaking with say it's all about believing in the possibility. a lot of people wrote off the wildcats in recent days, not expecting them to pull off the wins they did. now there's only one opponent left. >> the team's attitude is we're

and aájtt warmup during the day. clouds in the distance, the view from the comcast center. we'll get sunshine to start with in philadelphia. tracking scattered light showers. there's the rain falling in the reading area. snow showers they're to the north but heading to the east. almost done for the pocono mountains. northern new jersey seeing some steadier snow showers and to the west, that's the rain that's going to be arriving during the morning for some areas but not a lot of rain. 11:00 this morning, scattered showers north and west. 60 degrees in philadelphia. the temperatures with winds kicking in will warm into the middle 60s for philadelphia. rain will keep temperatures cooler north and west. the rain showers drop the temperatures in the philadelphia area just in time for the evening commute. that's when the rain will be falling. it will keep moving. in fact, it will move out of here tonight and by tomorrow morning, the temperatures will plunge from the 30s into the 20s and low 30s to start with. i'll track that colder weather

welcome back pap 6:15. in the last few hours, the train involved in a deadly derailment in delaware county has been removed from the tracks. two experienced amtrak workers on a backhoe were killed when the train hit them yesterday morning. federal investigators are looking at a data recorder and two cameras for clues about what went wrong. ple amtrak is on its normal schedule today. there could be residual delays on the acela express and

northeast regional lines. septa resumed service on its newark/wilmington line but says those travelers can expect up to 30-minute delays this morning. turning down to decision 2016. nbc news has learned the presidential campaigns of both donald trump and ted cruz are working on the same thing. >> that's to block rival john kasich from the ballot at the republican national convention. this latest report suggests the two leading gop candidates are preparing for a contested convention in cleveland this july. polls show cruz leading trump. in the democratic race, front-runner hillary clinton will campaign in philadelphia on wednesday, just a few weeks before the pennsylvania primary on april 26th. be sure you have the nbc 10 app. we have an entire section devoted solely to decision 2016, including the updated delegate count and news about each of the candidates. 6:16.

fortunately things are warming up out there on the weather front. jessica will give us an update on the road conditions, right? >> what are you seeing ouvç there, i-76, schuylkill. >> yes, the schuylkill expressway right now, doing okay. we're starting to see delays around the conshohocken curve area. you can see all traffic moving along, even though this area usually jams up first because it is two lanes eastbound from the blue route to the vine street expressway is a 16-minute trip, average speeds starting to go down, though. we are into the 40s now. again, it was the conshohocken curve. it's slower headed towards center city. also on route 73 in berlin, new jersey, not any problems in sight, right around taughten avenue. tracks two and three are out of service. with one and four only operating, we are seeing delays.

outbound trains from center city will operate to center city and then express to marcus hook. now your first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> 22 minutes before sunrise. we'll see some sunshine in the city to start with. delaware, south jersey will also get sunshine. you can see scattered clouds. this is the view from here at the nbc 10 studios. those clouds will bring us rain later in the day for philadelphia. the temperatures will be warmer by then. right now, 42 degrees, but the winds will kick in out of the southwest. we'll warm in the 60s today. different story in the pocono mountains. those are snowflakes falling. light snowfall at camel back. a dusting on the roof there. the snow will be heading out. temperatures in the pocono mountains will be warming, too. 27 degrees in mount pocono, well above freezing for allentown, pottstown and reading. the snow showers starting the morning off in the pocono mountains pushing to the east.

so the south, that's rain in berks county, moving into upper montgomery and bucks county, a light shower, most likely this morning north and west. while sunshine breaks through the clouds for delaware and south jersey to start with. eventually rain arrives for everyone. that happens this afternoon in philadelphia. a breezy day and it's the winds that will warm us up before the rain moves in. we'll be in the 60s today. nowhere near it tomorrow. cold to start with and windy, too. 31 degrees will feel like it's in the 20s to start with. 47 in the afternoon. partly sunny, warmer on wednesday and warmer, though we'll get rain on thursday. high of 61 degrees. but don't get used to that milder temperature. temperatures going right back down as we're heading into the weekend with cold winds blowing saturday into send. >> thank you, bill. strong thunderstorms may be to blame for the fire that destroyed a historic church in cumberland county. skyforce 10 was over the mt. pleasant united methodist church in millville. high winds yesterday morning

knocked down a tree which brought down power lines that may have sparked that fire. nbc 10 was also at ground level as firefighters put out some hot spots. we're told fire cruise were able to save the church's social hall. no one was hurt. investigators are looking for the official cause of the fire. it is 6:20 and 49 degrees in atlantic city. new at 6:00, a fire that rekindled overnight at newark's liberty airport, forced hundreds of people to evacuate the terminal for a second time in just three hours. the port authority says the first fire broke out in a boiler room just after 1:00 this morning. about 200 people headed inside for safety. that fire was put under control but a short timeç later, flame rekind rekindled, forcing the second evacuation. fortunately, no one was hurt. it is just ten minutes before 6:30 on your monday. 30 years later, villanova is back in the championship game. >> coming up, we're talking ticket prices. the low price we fond tickets

for the rest of us, we will see some rain. i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm katy zachry. 6:30, thanks for joining us on "nbc 10 news today." this is probably one time we all agree rain is a good thing as opposed to the alternative. >> the phillies are out of town, first of all. rain arriving this afternoon shouldn't be a problem. we'll get sunshine before the rain moves into the city. this is a live view from the 3prq&lon bank building in cente city. 41 degrees. and the snow that you showed in the pocono mountains is light snow falling in camelback. you can see it hasn't even covered the roof there. the snow is tapering off and will be ending the snow showers only an issue first thing this morning and really not much of an issue as it's dry air it's following into. rainfall in upper montgomery and bucks county. we've seen it moving through the reading area. dry in philadelphia. that changes as the day goes on. 30s and 40s, we'll warm into the

50s and 60s this afternoon. hour hour by hour forecast is calling for a few scattered showers, especially north and west at 8:00. 49 degrees. look at the warmup, those winds out of southwest kick in and push us out of the 60s. once it moves in, the temperatures start coming down. neighborhood by neighborhood forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. first, let's check in on jessica boyington, see how the traffic is moving. >> we're watching the 42 freeway in deptford, new jersey around route 41. right here are the northbound lanes. that's what's headed toward the philadelphia area. we still have a five-minute drive time from 55 to the walt whitman bridge. there is a fallen tree in cheltenham champion between new 2nd street and meeting house road. mass transit, running on a regular weekday schedule for the wilmington/newark line for septa but they're sharing tracks with amtrak past the scene. only tracks one and four are in

service. we're dealing with 30-minute delays. more details in the next ten. vai? 6:33 this morning. that train involved in the deadly derailment has been moved from the tracks. >> also today we're expecting to learn more about the two amtrak workers who were killed when that train hit a piece of construction equipment yesterday. nbc 10's monique braxton is live for us in trainer, delaware county where know neek you've been following this story since it happened first thing yesterday from the overnight hours into now, right? >> that's right. i can tell you we've been monitoring activity here near the derailment site overnight and we have now seen amtrak trains, including the acela and septa trains headed into both directions. the derailed train has been moved north, we're being told it's at 30th street station. >> then it was a fire, then the windows bursted out. some people were cut up. >> reporter: passengers shared the frightening moments when amtrak's palmetto train slammed into a backhoe, killing two and

injuring 35 sunday morning. delaware county's medical examiner plans to release the identities of the workers after the autopsies today. we have confirmed one of the deceased was the operator of the equipment. the other person killed was a supervisor, both had decades of experience. chester's mayor kirkland will  hold a press conference in a few hours to provide an update on the passengers injured. he will also detail efforts the city of chester will make to assist those affected and highlight city resources that may be used during amtrak and the ntsb's investigation. we ask investigators what caused the train carrying 348 crew members and passengers to collide with the backhoe. >> as part of our investigation we will be looking at the track structure and the work that was performed at the time of the accident. as of now we have recovered the event data recorder. the çforward-facing video and e

inward-facing video from the locomotive. >> reporter: now, the ntsb says they will examine the event data recorder at the laboratory in washington. they'll also look at how fast the train was going when it passed through trainer. live for now, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. monique, thank you. this is the second deadly amtrak crash in our area in just the past year. you'll remember eight people were killed when this train derailed in philadelphia's port richmond neighborhood. more than 200 people were hurt in that may 12th derailment. amtrak train 188 was traveling at more than twice the posted speed limit when it hit a curve in the tracks and crashed. since then, amtrak installed positive train control along the northeast corridor. it's a system that can automatically slow down a train if it's going too fast. we have continuing coverage on the nbc 10 app. click on the story when you first open the app for more pictures, video and amtrak's train schedule.

an amtrak train was involved in another deadly crash yesterday. >> that train collided with a car in northern illinois and officials say the vehicle drove around the crossing gates and was then hit by the train. one person was killed, none of the passengers or crew on the train were hurt. 6:36. this monday morning, marching to victory. the wildcats are so close to being the national champs. >> we can taste it. >> yes. there's one more game to go, though. >> tonight's game is the first time nova played in the national championship since 1985. nbc 10's matt delucia is live for us in houston, texas this morning. you know that so well and you've been rubbing shoulders with people for the last few days. you know that all too well, right? >> a lot of people have been waiting a long time for this. 31 years since that national championship and that game, the last time they made that appearance there. villanova is a catholic university. of course it doesn't come as any surprise that a lot of the fans,

students and alumni who are here in houston for the final four went to mass yesterday morning and it was a packed house. take a look at this. this was in the hotel ball room where the team is staying. father peter donahue led the team, their families and everyone in prayer. they all sung the alma mater. one last major gathering before the big night. >> we've all come together and the team and the coaches, they're kind, they're humble. i think they deserve to go all the way. >> are you praying for a win? >> i don't think you're allowed to pray for a win, are you? we all have cute little prayers once in a while. absolutely even though it's probably not what i'm supposed to say. >> reporter: and the fans keep thinking about the possibility that this team will return to villanova as national champions. wildcats and tar heels, later tonight at nrg stadium in houston. reporting live with the wildcats, matt delucia, nbc 10

the northbound side of route 95 at 73. you can see a few vehicles involved. a vehicle on the right-hand shoulder, another one up ahead. the accident scene primarily into the left-hand shoulder. police activity on the scene. another vehicle also on the southbound side where we normally see volume approaching the philadelphia area. that's just over into the shoulder. we're seeing more of a gaper delay moving by the scene, including normal morning rush hour volume. medford township, keeping it in new jersey, yew till pole is down causing emergency construction on route 70 eastbound around main street. that jug handle is closed. mass transit dealing with 30-minute delays inbound for the wilmington/newark line for septa. they are running on a regular weekday schedule and sharing tracks with amtrak which is partially why they are seeing big delays. katy. >> jessica, thank you. 6:41 and 49 degrees in

first, let's start with monique braxton in trainer, delaware county, with an update on the deadly train derailment. >> the derailed train has now been moved to 30th street station. two veteran amtrak employees were killed yesterday morning when the train slammed into their equipment on the track. delaware county's medical examiner plans to release the identities of those workers after the autopsies are performed today. chester's mayor will hold a press conference in just a couple of hours to provide an update on the passengers injured. the ntsb says they will examine the event data recorder. for more information to determine exactly what went wrong. for now in trainer, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. amtrak is back on its normal schedule today. there could be residual delays on the acela express and regional northeast rail lines.
