we'll tell you why vice president joe biden and dr. jill biden are in philadelphia today. community concerns. school officials and neighbors in wilmington are taking action following the death of a student. hear what the community is now asking for. good morning and welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm tracy davidson. it's 5:00 a.m. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley in the neighborhood weather forecast. bill, it's chilly but i know we'll get a warmup, right? >> we are indeed going to get a beautiful day. temperatures still falling at this hour. south jersey at 41 degrees. a couple spots in the 30s, pennsylvania suburbs at 46 degrees right now. it will be a cool start this morning, even after the sun's up. not warmer at 50 degrees. by 10:00, we're in the 60s, headed for the 70s this afternoon. that's true of philadelphia, too. 49 degrees right çnow. 51 degrees at 6:00 this morning and by 9:00, 62 degrees and climbing. in fact, the high temperatures today will definitely be warmer

than yesterday. saw a high of 70 degrees in philadelphia yesterday. 77 is what i'm forecasting for this afternoon. 70s across the board with one exception. right along the coast. a little bit cooler. 62 degrees later today. there's the seven day at the bottom of the screen. when i come back, a look at tomorrow, election day, which does have some rain in it. katy zachry has your first alert traffic. i have good news. you ended your report with rain in the forecast but fortunately things are dry on the roads right now if you're headed out for an early commute to work or school. things are looking good. throughout the morning, i was showing you drive times in pennsylvania majors. i wanted to focus in on the blue route. typically we don't have problems on the blue route. this is the blue route at ridge pike where i am seeing traffic pick up a little bit. no construction in this area, no accidents to report. everything is looking good on the blue route in that area. if you're driving through conshohocken this morning, beginning today, conshohocken

road is closed between ridge pike and fayette street for the next three months. i'll come up with an alternate for you in the next ten minutes. that goes into effect today. for our new jersey drivers, things are looking good on the majors, 295 if you're headed southbound between route 38 and 168, that drive will take you 12 minutes and the 42 freeway headed northbound between route 55 and the walt whitman bridge, that's a solid five it will take you. >> katy, thanks. today, four of the five presidential candidates will be in our area, just a day ahead of the pennsylvania and delaware primes are. >> they'll be making a push to sway voters. nbc 10's matt delucia is live outside penrose diner this morning in south philadelphia. that's where john kasich will be making a stop today. they couldn't have found a better place that's more iconic in south philly than penrose. >> absolutely, vai and tracy. people come here all the time, especially here in south

philadelphia and later on today at 10:00 this morning, governor john kasich, republican candidate, he will be here as well, shaking hands and talking with the people who are here at this diner. but he's been making quite a bit of news within the past 12 hours. he announced that he and ted cruz are teaming up in a matter of ways to try and take donald trump. kasich said his campaign's goal was to have an open republican convention. his chief strategist said they will shift resources out west but give ted cruz a clear path to winning indiana. that's a winner take all state. the hope there is to keep trump under the 1,237 total delegates needed to clinch the nomination. ted cruz's campaign meantime says they will let kasich fight for oregon and new mexico. his campaign manager said he hopes the allies of both campaigns will follow their lead. donald trump, he reacted to this, he's the republican front-runner, went on twitter and said this, wow, just announced that lyin'head as he

calls him will collude to keep me from getting the republican nomination. desperation, exclamation point. this place here will be getting quite a bit after tension. donald trump by the way, he has an event scheduled later on today at 4:00 at west chester university. there's a student group there that is planning to protest that visit, saying that donald trump is free to speak his mind but not at our campus. quite a bit of attention throughout our area as we are now just a little over 24 hours until the polls open in pennsylvania, delaware and three other states. live in south philadelphia this morning, i'm matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> thanks to are that, matt. 5:04. tonight the democratic candidates for president will be in philadelphia on the eve of the pennsylvania primary. >> msnbc will host back-to-back town halls with bernie sanders and hillary clinton.

education. the bidens will speak at the community college of philadelphia this afternoon. they'll be discussing the obama administration's efforts to lower college tuition and other costs. the goal is to ensure more americans get the education and skills needed for pathway to the middle class. now from our delaware bur u bureau -- >> town hall will be held tonight in wilmington to talk about the death of a 16-year-old girl involved in a fight inside a high school bathroom. amy joyner francis died after the fight at the howard high school of technology on thursday. her friends tell us she was a peacemaker who always stepped in to stop fights. the town hall tonight at stubbs elementary will allow the community to talk about what happened and how to prevent the future incidents. the governor, attorney general, mayor and other officials are expected to speak. and a family is out of their home this morning after a fire. crews were called to hartville street in philadelphia's kensington neighborhood around

10:30 last night. an nbc 10 viewer sent us this video of the scene. an adult and child were inside the home when the fire started. the red cross is helping them out this morning. no one there was hurt. investigators are calling a fire in frankford neighborhood suspicious this morning. a cat was killed and three other animals rescued when the housmç went up in flames. this fire started at the leap other leaper street yesterday afternoon. it rekendyled last night but is now out. the flyers season is now over, the capitals eliminating them from the playoffs yesterday. >> i was there. good game. bummer, though. the players say the experience is something to build on. >> we were positive we'd take it to game seven. unfortunate unfortunately, we didn't. >> we did everything we had. it's obviously frustrating. >> i'm proud of every single guy in this dressing room. we pushed it to the limit and busted our butt all year long.

wilmington just shy of 50 degrees at this hour. south of rehoboth beach is at 50 degrees, lewis, 45. that's our starting point. the numbers may come down a little bit more but we have a day that will be turning warmer, in the upper 70s. running 5 to 7 degrees warmer than yesterday. but for tomorrow, election day, there's a chance we'll see some showers and thunderstorms. part of a large system that's coming in from the west. at 8:00 in the morning, just to the west and northwest, a chance of some showers. the best chance of those showers coming in will come in later in the day tomorrow, so there's plenty of time to get to the polls when it will be dry and warm, too. you may have noticed the warmup scrolling at the bottom of the screen. that's the seven-day forecast, showing the temperatures even warmer tomorrow. we are dry, no sign of clouds this morning. that's why it's so nice and cool to start with. the wet weather is way to the north. look at minnesota, into north dakota. that will be coming our way for tomorrow. at times, not all day. 77 degrees this afternoon for

capital. rallies and sit-ins are scheduled outside the state capitol building in raleigh as lawmakers return to work. new law requires transgender people to use bathrooms in line with the gender on their birth certificate. leaders from the naacp are expected to offer lawmakers their version of the bill the group says should have been passed. people protest the bathroom law rallied in charlotte, north carolina yesterday. charlotte's mayor joined religious leaders calling for repeal of the law they say limits the rights of the lgbt community. >> we hope our leegislature wil show some sense for a change and rescind hb2, hate bill 2. that's what it is. >> they claim it offers modesty and safety. hundreds marched one year after freddie gray died in police custody.

up to 76 degrees. bethlehem and easton, well into the 70s this afternoon. a nice warmup all around. south jersey into the 70s. you'll see clouds later in the day in hamilton township and haddonfield. while at the jersey shore, bright sunshine and it will warm up. but only into the 60s. a range of temperatures from 62 degrees in atlantic city to 68 in wildwood and delaware with a southwesterly breeze, 76 this afternoon for wilmington and dover. bright sunshine today. sunglasses today, watch this. we have rain coming in and the first of it is likely to come our way first thing tomorrow morning. this evening, we'll be completely dry. in fact, to the west, those showers don't look like much of anything. watch as they move into the area. that's early tomorrow morning at 3:00. you may hear rumbles of thunder at that hour tomorrow morning. then as the day goes on, we'll get nice breaks of sunshine. that will allow for a big warmup into the 80s in the afternoon. but then during the afternoon, some scattered showers are possible and the late in the

afternoon, we could see showers and thunderstorms roll through the area, which means we have wet weather. and the first of it, 11:30 tonight, rain moving in with just a bit of rain, possibly up to a third of an inch in philadelphia. that's early in the morning. that's by 2:30 in the morning tomorrow morning. then we get a big break from the rain during the day, late in the afternoon, showers and possibly some thunderstorms. we could see half an inch of rain in philadelphia and possibly more in some of the pennsylvania suburbs, closer to an inch in doylestown. that's tomorrow. it's part of the ten-day outlook. sunshine today, 77 degrees. showers and possibly some thunderstorms early in the morning and then again late in the day for tomorrow. then a break on wednesday. more rain for thursday and friday and into next week. the chance rain will stay with us. later on saturday and later on sunday. the broad street run will likely stay dry, monday, tuesday and wednesday, possibility of more showers. that's going to keep our
