when you hear about the tough phone calls i'm having, don't worry about it. just don't worry about it. they're tough. we have to be tough. it's time we're going to be a little tough, folks. >> president trump confronting foes and friends alike, possible new sanctions on iran, changing course with israel, and new developments overnight to kill dodd-frank. rex tillerson is about to take on america's biggest foreign policy challenge, russia. and before the patriots take on the falcons in super bowl li, we have the battle of the late-night jimmys. "early today" starts right now. good to be with you on this friday morning. a surprising turn of event, the white house is now warning israel to stop announcing plans
to build new settlements in the occupied west bank. the statement clarified that the administration is concerned specifically with the construction of new settlements, not the existing settlements, which it does not view as an impediment to middle east peace. this could signal fault lines in the otherwise warm relationship between president donald trump and israel prime minister benjamin netanyahu, who is expected to visit the white house in two weeks. developing overnight, the white house may hit iran with new sanctions as early as today. officials say they would be in response to iran's terrorist activity and repeated ballistic missile tests, and there are strong support for sanctions in congress, as leaders from both sides of the aisle are encouraging the white house to punish iran. we had put on notice first, now word of new sanctions. what's the reaction where you are? >> reporter: well, frances, exactly. this nuclear deal is barely a year old and iran is being put
on notice and is facing fresh sanctions for a ballistic missile test, which was probably launched to measure president trump's response. although, the president is uncharted territory for iran, animosity and friction with america isn't. in fact, anti-american in iran is a defining characteristic of this islamic republic since it was founded four decades ago. the ruling establishment here, they fired back yesterday. they lambasted president trump. they promised more missile tests. in reality, they're trying to figure out now what their next move is in this long-running chess game with the united states. hostility with america gives hard liners in iran more of a platform, which could spell trouble for president rouhani. he was voted in on a promise to seal the nuclear deal, bring security to iran, and lift sanctions in order to get their economy going in the country. if he can't deliver on that, he's in real trouble. it could give hard liners a big platform in may's election, which would spell more
confrontation with america, which is something president rouhani has hard tried to avoid. frances? >> certainly a complicated chess game with very high stakes at that. ali, thank you very much. secretary of state rex tillerson spent a busy first day on the job calming the nerves of foreign allies and employees within the state department over the president's recent executive actions. nbc chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell has details. >> hi. i'm the new guy. >> reporter: rex tillerson no longer the powerful oil executive, now a freshman diplomat confronting challenges on all sides. that flash point in iran, russia where the president wants better relations despite a sharp spike in russian-sponsored fighting in ukraine, and even mexico, where mr. trump told the president, you have a bunch of bad hombres down there. the white house says he was being light hearted. >> no cabinet secretary wants to be in the position of cleanup aisle eight. he's going to have his hands full because he's got a
president that wants to be very active on foreign policy. >> reporter: first, tillerson trying to reassure thousands of state department employees angry about the president's immigration orders. >> i know this was a hotly contested election, and we do not all feel the same way about the outcome, but we cannot let our personal convictions overwhelm our ability to work as one team. >> that was nbc's andrea mitchell reporting. house minority leader nancy pelosi isn't mincing words when it comes to describing president trump's senior adviser. pelosi slammed breitbart exeexec exeexec exec stephen bannon. >> what's making america less safe is to have a white supremacist named to the national security council as a permanent member while the chairman of the joint chiefs and the director of national intelligence are told don't call us, we'll call you. it's a stunning thing that a
white supremacist, bannon, would be a permanent member. >> so far there's been no response from president trump or the white house. a community is in mourning today following the murder of sergeant steven floyd, a delaware corrections officer with 16 years of experience. floyd was found dead at the prison yesterday after authorities ended a dramatic hostage crisis there. they used a backhoe to smash through a barricade of foot lockers and then stormed the building, saving the other hostages from the inmates. they had sharpened their weapons. the guards union president said floyd yelled out a warning during the prison takeover, saving his co-workers' lives. firefighters in virginia are battling a massive blaze at a recycling center about 20 miles outside of washington, d.c. the two-alarm fire broke out around 9:00 p.m. last night, tearing through the roof of the fairfax county recycling and disposal center. fire officials say about three stories worth of trash is burning inside an incinerator. about 30 units are on the scene trying to get the blaze under
control. no injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is still unknown. all right. super bowl sunday will feature the patriots against the falcons. we know that. but late night had a battle of its own. both jimmys sharing special nfl segments. fallon had puppies, and kimmel had nfl stars tackling mean tweets. take a listen. >> welcome to puppy predictors super bowl li edition. here's how it works. we have nine puppies and two bowls of kibble. one representing the new england patriot, the other representing the atlanta falcons. whichever bowl gets the most puppies will be crowned the super bowl champs. let's release the puppies. i think it's a no-brainer. it's whoever is in this bowl right here, which is the atlanta falcons. >> all right. cuteness overload there. so that was fallon. and here's kimmel's super bowl
