back on the ice, the flyers home opener happens tonight at the wells fargo center. we'll hear from the players ahead of the new season. good morning. this is "nbc10 news today." it's 8:30 on this saturday. i'm rosemary connors. thanks for being with us. let's start with our weekend weather, a foggy morning across the area. here's a live look if you can see it at the philadelphia skyline where the dreary weather will start out our weekend. meteorologist krystal klei has the details in the first alert forecast. >> let's start with the picture you were showing, rosemary. we have low clouds which is why you don't see many building tops and we have patchy fog as well which is why it's all hazy down to the delaware river. the mix of the two is making it look very dreary out there this morning. the thing is if you look at radar and satellite the rain itself isn't present much at all across our area. few sprinkles down in parts of sussex county and a few sprinkles we could see today over parts of south jersey and

delaware, but overall a fairly dry day in terms of actual rainmaking it to the ground. we'll still have clouds in place through much of today. mostly cloudy conditions, just a few peeks of sun in the afternoon. as for temperatures right now we're at 62 in trenton, wilmington, philadelphia, allentown even at 60 currently. these temperatures in the 60s will be on the rise. we're talking temperatures that make their way closer, well, to the 70s. as we get into our afternoon. pick up to 80s tomorrow, sharp drop to monday. we'll talk about why we're seeing this roller coaster effect in just a bit. all right, breaking news, the man who jumped from an upper floor of an apartment building on fire in philadelphia is now at the hospital. "nbc10 news toda nbc10 was on the scene where crews responded to a rubbish fire around 7:30 this morning. they put out the flames in minutes. investigators are calling this fire suspicious. we're working to get more details on that and on the

victim's condition. happening now on the pennsylvania turnpike, there is a major detour on a stretch of the northeast extension. if you are traveling north this weekend, maybe to check out the foliage or some local fall festivals, you'll have to get around the closure. and it will take you some time. nbc10's katy zachry is live in upper macungie. katy, what are you seeing, or not seeing, out there on the turnpike this morning? >> reporter: yeah, rosemary, behind me this is a stretch of the turnpike in both directions outside of the detour that lasts until monday morning. so from what we can see the traffic on this stretch of the turnpike that's open to traffic is running fine. but let's be frank, this detour -- this road closure, is a nightmare for so many people. especially if you headed to or from the poconos for this prime leaf peeping season, we're talking 40 miles of the pennsylvania turnpike closed to all traffic. closure lasts until 4:00 a.m. monday. and we have a map for you where that detour's highlighted in

red. the blue is a detour that takes you around onto roads like 22, 33 and interstate 80. -- valley interchange. going southbound you'll be detoured beginning at the pocono interchange. it's all so crews can replace an aging bridge on the turnpike. we did talk to some drivers this morning who left early to account for delays. so it was an inconvenience, no question. >> it was. the timewi wise it's not much different, however different type of driving. and we would have gotten on the turnpike much earlier. >> reporter: and by different type of driving that man means that he was forced on more local roads, two-lane roads that have stoplights and stop signs that further adds to the delays. coming up in our next half hour you will hear from a family we met this morning headed from here back home to ohio. and they had no idea 40 miles of

their trip was closed to traffic, if you can imagine that, rosemary. >> yeah, going to take them a little while to get back to ohio. thanks for that, katy. new this morning, philly police are looking for the gunman who shot and killed a man sitting in a car. nbc10 was on the scene on benner street in wiisinoming. police say the shooter opened fire at close range and then took off. officers are now talking to witnesses who heard those shots. philly police are also busy this morning tracking down leads in a deadly hit-and-run. this happened in port richmond on allegheny avenue. a driver hit and killed a man walking near tulip street around 2:00 this morning. police say as of this hour they do not have a description of the car involved. we're working to get more information on that and on the victim's condition. some parents in south jersey are calling for the school superintendent to resign over mold like this found inside their children's schools. the parents claim their concerns have not been addressed and that

there's been a cover-up. students in monroe township gloucester county were kept out of class all week because of the mold. last night the district announced that all schools except for holly glenn elementary will reopen on tuesday. the district gave the okay for the students at the other schools to return following mold testing and cleanup. some sections of certain buildings will remain off limits. last night dozens of parents held a closed door meeting at williamstown high school. one mother tells us she's having her sons tested. she wonders how her healthy 14-year-old missed nearly a month of class last year when the mold first surfaced. >> what's the one question you want answered? >> how they covered this up or why they covered it up. why wasn't this handled? >> are you calling for the superintendent to step down? >> absolutely. absolutely. i 100% support him being gone. >> on that note this online petition is demanding the superintendent and other top school officials step down. nbc10 has reached out to those officials to get their side of the story. we have yet to hear back.

we will keep you posted when we do. now to the wildfires burning out west in california. for the first time crews battling these flames are reporting a bit of progress toward containing the fires. but strong winds are expected in the area today and that could fan the flames forcing them to spread even more. the blazes have killed 36 people making this the deadliest series of wildfires in california history. nearly 6,000 homes and businesses have been destroyed. more help is now on the way. crews from nine states, canada and even australia have been pouring into california. >> where you at? >> right here! come on. >> new body camera video shows a sheriff's deputy running into a burning neighborhood to help save a woman in a wheelchair. you can see he and another deputy lift the woman into an suv to take her to safety. the first deputy then drove through the neighborhood warning people about the dangerous flames. one couple surprised by the speed of the fire survived by

jumping into a neighbor's pool. they stayed in the water for six hours as the wildfires destroyed the neighborhood around them including their own home. >> and then the fire got here and that tree behind us went up. and when that tree went up, it was hot. that's when we got into the pool. >> the couple says they did not get any official alert about the fire. by the time they realized it was coming, it was just too late for them to leave. today, in beverly hills, leaders of the motion picture academy will hold an emergency meeting about harvey weinstein. the oscar winning producer is facing a barrage of sexual assault allegations, some dating back decades. weinstein is a lifetime member of the academy. board members will discuss the possibility of revoking his membership. police in charlotte have arrested a panthers fan who attacked a man at thursday night's game between carolina and the eagles. want to give you a quick warning the video you're about to see is

violent. cell phone video shows the suspect arguing with an older fan in the row behind him before punching him. the victim and witnesses say the attacker and his girlfriend were standing throughout the entire game and that led to the argument. i doubt that will happen at tonight's game when the flyers skate in their home opener against the washington capitals at the wells fargo center. the orange and black split their first four games on the road. faceoff tonight is just after 7:00. you can catch the opener on nbc sports philadelphia. little bit later on today, this afternoon, 7-year-old cancer survivor leah still will share her story and inspire girls in delaware. she will be speaking at the girls can do anything conference at the grace united methodist church in wilmington. leah as you may remember is the daughter of nfl player and wilmington native devon still. we've been following her journey through beating cancer. she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at the age of 4. she is now in full remission.

so here are the high temperatures for today. 74 in philadelphia. 73 in the suburbs and see a couple more 74 south jersey, delaware with that just isolated chance of a shower developing. and only a peek of sunshine possible as we get into the later afternoon hours. let me show you. this is the hour by hour model. go through the next few hours here and it's showing a sprinkle trying to make it north. i just don't think this is going to happen. i think it's going to be cloudy, but i don't think we'll see much in terms of raindrops. maybe a spritz here or there but that's about it. then go through the rest of the afternoon hours you see how you have clouds popping up here and there? that's the breaks for sunlight. just little peeks of sun in the afternoon and into the evening, little bit of shower activity lingering against the shoreline. as we go into tomorrow it will be windy. gusts 25 to 30 miles per hour. and notice where the winds come in from tomorrow, the southwest. we have winds coming in from the southwest, that's a warm air flow. that's going to change things up for us. so watch this. this is the hour by hour model we've got right now. and the cold front is going to

be sitting tomorrow to our west. so for us we'll be in something called the warm sector. what that means is it's the area where warm air moves in from the southwest ahead of a cold front. that will continue into the afternoon hours. we even see clearing conditions, sunshine mixed with clouds here, sunday going to be pretty nice. then we go overnight sunday. this is about 10:30, 11:00 p.m., the cold front starts to approach and we have a line of scattered showers rolling through. those will pass overnight. and then by early monday morning the front itself has passed, there's just some lingering spo spotty showers left. those will dry out quickly into monday and left with cooler conditions. today temperatures pick up a bit, tomorrow like i mentioned really warming up. 82 in philly. 80 in the suburbs and 78 in the lehigh valley. then the front passes, bam. look at that drop. almost 20 degrees, 6 3 in philly, 60 for the lehigh valley and a temperature of 64 in delaware. we'll talk about some of the events going on this weekend and what you can expect in terms of conditions outside coming up in

malik johnson on the scramble drill, he rolls right and finds his man in the back of the end zone. nice toe tap for the touchdown. they beat washington 36-18. lincoln hosting kipdubeaux, howard fires but he finds lincoln's sam carr. he takes the pick in for six. lincoln takes the game 26-6. army taking on samuel fells high and this one all trojans. olney's burton with the rock, shut out 38-0. overbrook visiting southern. overbrook driving when griffin steps in front of the pass and he's off the other way. southern turns that into six points. this one a shootout, southern knocks off overbrook 54-42. time to head for a birds eye view of the action. we call them skylights. audubon hosting. final seconds of the first half, matt fires towards the end zone. it's hard to see through the trees but trust me, that's a touchdown. although audubon comes back to win it 26-14.

much of the morning. but the weather will rebound. we've got those details in moments in the first alert neighborhood forecast. stay in bed, we got you covered this morning. good morning, this is "nbc10 news today," thanks for being with us. i'm rosemary connors. it's just after 9:00 on this saturday. let's begin with our weekend weather. meteorologist krystal klei is tracking the cloudy conditions outside, at least it's not wet at the moment, krystal. >> yeah, and it totally is stay in bed weather. you see cloudy, fog out there, you want some hot cocoa or coffee and stay wrapped up because really while we are cloudy, the rain itself is offshore for the most part. now, i think today as this kind of wraps around and moves to the east a few sprinkles, light showers near parts of the delaware beaches, south jersey are certainly possible. even a report of an hour or half hour ago sprinkles falling over parts of pennsylvania. but that's going to be the most you'll see is a few sprinkles out there today. just not going to get a lot of rain. we will stick with the clouds. and we are starting cool.

a lot of us are in the 60s right now. 60 pottstown and 64 northeast philly. 65 in center city. the 60s are going to move up into the 70s this afternoon which will be warmer than average. a little warmer than we've seen the last few days. not high 70s, mostly low to mid 70s. take a look at the trend here. 71 at noon and right around mid 70s by 3:00. i think officially the airport probably only about 74 degrees, but a few spots could get higher. we'll talk more about the temperatures through the rest of our neighborhoods for today compared to tomorrow coming up. now to breaking news. a man who jumped from the upper floor of this burning apartment building in philadelphia is now at the hospital. and investigators are calling the fire suspicious. nbc10 was at the parkside apartments on leaper street in frankford where crews responded to a rubbish fire inside the building around 7:30 this morning. they put out the flames, as you can see, in minutes. we spoke with a woman who lives here. she tells us she saw the victim

trying to escape the fire. >> the guy he jumped out the back window because it was so smoky he couldn't come down the hallway to get out. so he jumped. he's a little broken up. in bad shape. >> really? >> yeah. >> as i mention officials are investigating this as suspicious. in the meantime we're working to find out more about the victim's condition. happening now, there is a major detour on the pennsylvania turnpike. a stretch of the northeast extension is blocked off so workers can take care of a bridge replacement project. guess what, this detour is going to keep you on the road for a lot longer than you probably expected today. nbc10's katy zachry is live in upper macungie. katy, what are you hearing from drivers? >> reporter: yeah, they're quick to sound off about this detour, rosemary, because we are talking about a 40-mile stretch in both directions on the pennsylvania turnpike that is completely closed to traffic until monday

at 4:00 a.m., as you can imagine hampering people's weekend plans. we have a map to show you and better illustrate this road closure. the road closure is highlighted in red, blue is the detour around it that puts you on roads like route 22, 33 and interstate 80. if you are driving northbound, you will be forced off the highway at the lehigh valley interchange. going southbound expect to be detoured beginning at the poconos interchange. it's all because highway crews are replacing an aging bridge. we found one family headed back to ohio this morning. they tell me they had no idea they would be in for such a detour. how are you dealing with this? it's a bummer, right? you're going to be in the car for longer. >> it is a bummer. we didn't know where we were going, wherever gps takes us, now we're going to follow that route. >> reporter: and we're taking a live look right now at turnpike traffic that is starting to get backed up as these cars and trucks make their way toward that detour. so as you can see where we are at this service plaza we're

already seeing some of the traffic back up as they are being rerouted off of the pennsylvania turnpike in the allentown area. and as you saw from our map earlier, being forced onto local roads like route 22, 33 and interstate 80. and for people taking those local roads they tell me it's much slower going. the rain isn't helping things and there are a lot of stoplights and stop signs. so people are planning to add at least a half hour, even an hour to their drive this morning and for the weekend until the road closure is lifted. for now, reporting live in lower macungie township, katy zachry, nbc10 news. >> lifted at 4:00 a.m. monday. thanks, katy. in other news this morning, a pennsylvania woman and her family are now in canada after being rescued from captivity. her husband is revealing new information about their five years being held hostage by a group linked to the taliban. a warning you may find some of these details disturbing. caitlan coleman is originally from york county, pennsylvania. her husband joshua boyle is

canadian. after arriving in toronto last night, he told reporters the insurgent group killed their infant daughter while they were held hostage. he also said a guard raped his wife. coleman was pregnant when she and her husband were kidnapped in afghanistan. the couple then had three other children who were born in captivity. >> obviously it will be of incredible importance to my family that we are able to build a secure sanctuary for our three surviving children to call a home, to focus on edification and to try to regain some portion of the childhood that they have lost. >> he added that one of his surviving children is in poor health and had to be treated immediately after they were rescued by pakistani forces this week. we have a follow-up to a story nbc10 was first to report. albright college in reading has kicked two more players off its football team in connection with a pregame demonstration. earlier this week you may remember we spoke to quarterback

jyree durant. he told us he was booted off the team for kneeling during the national anthem. you see it right here. the college said durant was punished for going against a team decision among players and the coach to kneel during the coin toss but to stand for the anthem. we've learned the team has cut two other players twor, two mort for kneeling but for standing during the coin toss. again, the opposite of what the team had decided what they would do. albright's president says the school is now looking at new policies that will support all students. today in burlington county a congregation will celebrate its newly constructed church. the original easton bible church in hainesport was destroyed by fire. today there will be for food and families. today, philadelphia police and septa officers will continue their work to rehabilitate homes for two families. they started the renovations on

different city every day through veterans day. yesterday he was here in philadelphia. today he'll be in new york. you are looking at rob jones running the schuylkill river trail yesterday. after being injured in afghanistan seven years ago he learned how to walk, run and swim again. now he's trying to run 31 marathons in 31 cities in 31 days. he tells us he's doing it to show other wounded vets that nothing can stop them from achieving their goals. >> when somebody that maybe struggling sees me doing this, they might have a better chance or it might be easier for them to envision themselves being able to do it as well. so this is just an extension of that overall mission. >> jones plans to finish on november 11th, veterans day, on the national mall in washington. we wish him the best. 9:13 right now on this saturday. coming up next, we have a furry friend in studio. we'll introduce you to a pet looking for a loving home in our clear the shelters segment.

little scared and he's doing good. this is actually my foster cat. >> oh, there you go. >> i've had him for about a month. he's getting over a little cold so he'll be available for adoption very, very soon. i'm hoping to find him a great home. he's very sweet. and i just, you know -- >> we can tell he's yours at least for the time being. >> yes. >> he's a little camera shy this morning. >> yeah. you know, kitten season is winding down, it's the end of the summer, beginning of fall, but we still need foster parents. and, you know, cats like meatball here and even little guys we get in only about a week old, we need people to give them temporary homes. and it's very, very rewarding experience. >> amy, you know, it's interesting every week when we have you on certainly we're promoting pets that are going to be adopted, that are ready for adoption. >> right. >> if people aren't necessarily, you know, ready to make that commitment, they can always become a foster parent. >> yeah. that's a good way to think about it, you know what i mean? because you're saving a life and

and we begin with a live camera overlooking frolly stadium in wilmington, delaware. clouds overhead but looks like some of the fog we had about an hour or two hours ago has started to thin out. that's a good sign. temperatures pick up and pull away from the dew point and that's when the fog can burn off. for those of you foggy still, don't worry. give it a couple more hours and should burn off as well. look at radar and satellite, we have showers mostly offshore now. and just a few isolated showers right near the delaware beaches. i wouldn't be surprised if throughout today we get just a few sprinkles over mostly this portion of our viewing zone because we still have some moisture in this kind of wraparound effect we've been dealing with now for a couple days. not totally out of the clear, but we're looking at much lower chances of rain than even a couple days ago. let's go through the hour by hour for today. this is going through noon and notice it's showing a sprinkle or two possible even into pennsylvania but really a sprinkle is all that you might see. it's going to be mostly cloudy throughout the day, but some of those breaks in clouds you see kind of back and forth, that's

just brief peeks of sunlight for the most part it will be cloudy today. but a little crack of sun here and there is certainly possible in the afternoon. and that's going to help pick those temperatures up into the 70s by later today. so as we go through today, 70s. by tomorrow winds start to shift and we're watching a cold front that will be sitting to our west. ahead of the cold front tomorrow warm air's going to start moving in in something called the warm sector, it's really the southwest winds that pull over us which pumps in that higher heat and higher temperatures as a result. so here's tomorrow afternoon. nice and warm over us. some of us in the 80s, but the cold front is starting to get closer which will strengthen those winds. it will also be windy tomorrow. then the cold front starts to approach over us overnight. that could bring some rain into early monday morning. and then by monday there it is that cool air starts to pool in over us and that's just going to take those temperatures right back down. here it is. 74 today. 82 tomorrow. and then 63 on monday. so really an up and a down. again, those showers are just on the early end of monday first

few hours of the day. and then we dry out as well. in the suburbs 73 for today. 80 by tomorrow. how about in the lehigh valley, 73 to 78 by your sunday. and then down to 60 degrees monday. new jersey, you're at 74 to 84 by tomorrow. the shore even goes from low to mid 70s and in delaware 74 up to 82. then right back down 64 degrees on monday. here's the hour by hour model to show you the showers i was talking about. 11:00 a.m. fog is starting to thin out. again, we're starting to see the mix of clouds and sunshine. that continues. more sun in the forecast for tomorrow and then there it is tomorrow night the cold front approaches overnight into early monday morning those showers will move through.
