take a look at these pictures. flash flooding. interstates closed. dozens of water rescues. there's more on the way. president obama had declared a federal emergency and rob is rob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia, it's an e emergency much of this state. it is just remarkable, we're in downtown charleston, one of many neighborhoods that's knee and waist deep in water. people had to leave their homes and stay in other places. you have to be on high ground, charleston. the last three days, 15 inches of rain. yesterday, alone, 10 inches. plantation, 2 feet. no matter how you measure this, this is truly historic. this morning, historic flooding hammering south carolina. rescues happening overnight, as president obama declares an emergency.

surging flood waters creating treacherous conditions. >> i live one block that way. i tried coming this way. the water was above my waist. >> reporter: record-setting rain, closing roads, stranding drivers. additional crews brought to in to assist with more water rescues. >> charleston is closed. about every street down here is closed. >> reporter: winds toppling trees and taking down power lines, leaving more than 30,000 customers without power. >> a couple of feet here now, last night, it had to be 4 feet. >> reporter: in north carolina, roads under water and sink holes opening up. the governor there urging residents to use caution. >> be careful in and around the water. >> in the water. >> reporter: watch this home in new jersey, seen here before it was literally ripped apart by

the water, now floating away. up and down the coast, mother nature not letting up. more torrential rain expected through tuesday. lot of those pictures are from the coast. i want to show you some shots inland. two hours from here, columbia, south carolina, they're having rescues happening right now because of the torrential rains that have fallen overnight, by the university of south carolina. so, truly an emergency going on. let's go to the radar, the last few hours, how that tropical stream of moisture has driven into the mountains. the case over the next couple of hours. let's put the map into motion. we do expect things to eventually weaken. but i tell you what mother nature hasn't cooperated with our models. it looks like eventually over the next few days it will

first of the el faro. the discovery validation they're searching in the right area. friends and family members holding on to hope the 33 crew members including 28 americans are still alive. >> i'm very hopeful. until they find a reason for me not to be i'm going to remain hopeful. >> reporter: rescue crews scouring 30,000 nautical miles. the el faro was traveling from jacksonville, florida, to san juan, puerto rico, when it was beset by joaquin. sending a distress at 8:00 a.m. on thursday. tote maritime, the company that owns the ship, said the captain was aware of the hurricane's path. >> the captain in this case, had been monitoring the track of

of days prior to departing. >> reporter: here in the bahamas government officials have been able to fly over the affected islands, they describe major destruction. they now anticipate there will be loss of life. dan? >> linzie, thank you very much for your reporting this morning. meanwhile, new developments and new questions this morning in the oregon college massacre, what we know now about what how the gunman died and why he singled out one student for survival. chris mintz got shot seven times trying to save lives. neal karlinsky is live. >> reporter: they have just opened the road to the school just behind me for the very first time. a sign the town is trying to get back to normal. at the same time, an fbi analysis team has arrived on the

death a suicide. >> he may have been hit and then -- >> turned the gun on himself. >> reporter: before that moment, he apparently singled out one student to live. the gunman chilling left one student with a message that only police have seen. >> he called one guy, gave him the envelope and told him to the coroner. >> obviously he was going to be the one who was going to be telling the story, that he was the lucky one. >> reporter: even though the road is still open, the school won't be for some time. the only thing that will be going on here will be grief counseling for anybody that needs it zmrfshlgts we turn now to the race to the white house, it's your voice, your vote. democratic front-runner hillary clinton getting a ton of laughs last night on "snl." no one was offlimits. not donald trump's hair, not even herself.

a concrete overhang collapsed right on top of the high school students. 21 students and one adult were injured. officials say a box truck was mostly hauling band equipment and hit the concrete awning. and president obama is calling for a full-scale investigation into the apparent u.s. bombing of a hospital in afghanistan, what he called a tragic incident. 19 people including 3 children, a number of doctors also were killed in the air strike, it hit a medical facility hit in the northern city of kunduz run by the humanitarian group doctors without boarders. they said the air strike was a humanitarian law moscow is vowing to intensify its air strikes in syria.

on saturday, russia released a new video of the air raise. isis militants are being routed by their air assault. it's solely targeted isis. but the u.s. says at least some of those air strikes appeared to hit western-backed rebels. and pope francis has opened a meeting of the world bishops on family issues by inserting that marriage is a bond between a man and woman. called on the conference to denounce homophobia in the church. tony elliott was one of four people killed in a plane crash, elliott a two-time race car winner was traveling with his friends to watch the clemson/notre dame football game, the wreckage from the single-engine airplane was found near lake hartwell.

crash. here in new york city, investigation under way into this deadly explosion inside of a brooklyn building, a woman was kill in that blast. three other people on the street were injured. initials reports suggest that the explosion was linked to a ten about who removed a stove without turning off the gas. college football players from the university of oregon got sandwiched together hours before kickoff on saturday. thes onnive lineman live-tweeting the experience. much like sara haines does. this elevator sat idle for 20 minutes. players cheering when day were finally liberated and posing for pictures with their new friends. the oregon ducks went on to beat the colorado buffalos by a score of 4-21.

along the coast will increase again. coast al coastal flood watches, warnings are up. out to the west we go, a storm coming through there, red-flag warnings are up for winds. winter weather advisory could see some six-plus inches of rain. meanwhile, across the midsection of the country, it looks to be danielle: good morning. i'm meteorologist danielle vollmar. temperatures starting in the 40's. 30's in concord. 50's in boston. we are going to warm up into the mid to upper 50's today. it's a mostly cloudy day. best chances for breaks of sun north and west along the coast there could be some patchy drizzle out there. be aware of that. it is not a washout though. but it's still cool, and the winds are still pretty strong. tomorrow we'll see more breaks of sunshine. by tuesday lots of sunshine.

so be aware of that. if you live in this area, patchy drizzle could happen from time to time but it is not a washout of a day. you can enjoy it. the stationary front is move to go the south now so high pressure regaining control. watching hurricane joaquin, a category 3 hurricane making its near land fall on bermuda. in fact, it does have winds of 115 miles an hour. so it has weakened just a bit at the 8:00 update. as we go through the next seven days it passes off shore well off to sea on monday. we start to warm up and see a lot more sunshine tuesday and wednesday. stick around.
