good morning and welcome to news channel 8 today. i'm candace mccowan in for gene ramirez. >> and i'm gayle guyardo. our stop stories this morning, tensions run high as tampa police investigate a deadly shooting in south tampa. two people were shot at an apartment complex on south lois avenue. one of the victims is dead. the other one is recovering in the hospital at this hour. and new this morning we have learned both victims were inside a car when they were shot. hulk hogan is expected back on the stand today in the civil trial between him and the

hogan testified monday that he was, quote, humiliated when gawker published a video of him having sex. he is suing the website for $100 million. gawker's attorneys will get to cross-examine him later today. and a live look at the university of tampa this morning. you can see sort of. it's a little dark on campus right now but it's going to be a beautiful day with temperatures reaching about 80 degrees. meteorologist leigh spann is here to tell us more about what's in store. >> we will see a few patchy clouds but it will really feel like spring. and just like yesterday, there's a bit of a chill this morning. but it's not even as cold as yesterday. 49 right now in brooksville. 50 in inverness. yeah, it's cool. it just won't stay this way for long. 55 in lakeland. 53 in apollo beach. and look at what a 24 hour difference we're already seeing. brooksville, inverness, already seven degrees warmer. and brandon, about seven

should be fantastic today at the strawberry festival. at 7:30, trace atkins hitting the stage. gates open at 10:00 this morning. already feeling nice. so i talked about it being cool. we are close to 70. by 10:00 this morning, and then 82 in plant city this afternoon. and 3:00 p.m., 71 degrees at 8:00. when trace atkins is on the stage. at 5:38, an eight-day temperature trend. but leslee is going to help you get to work this morning and we have some issues but some issues are gone away now. yeah, the fatal accident in polk county, a fatal crash. it's tough to wake up to that but the lanes have reopened on highway 60 right at evergreen. that's in the lake wales area. that's good news. and bradenton now, cortez road at 14th street, an accident here. so heads up. otherwise, bradenton looks good on 301 and 75. causeway boulevard, some eastbound lanes blocked at 50th street. this is a hot spot. i see a lot of accidents here. and in general, there's a lot of construction going on here

but we've got a crash there, right now with eastbound lanes. some of them, at least two taken away at causeway. good drive through ybor city. no delays on the veterans expressway. now back to candace and gayle. right now, a deadly shooting in south tampa puts a neighborhood on edge. look at how emotional neighbors became while police investigated. and now the search continues for the person or people who pulled the trigger. and now this all happened at the gardens at south bay apartments along south lois avenue late last night. in fact, we followed the story as breaking news in the 11:00 newscast. and news channel 8's lindsey mastis is joining us live from the scene this morning. and i know she is out there asking a lot of questions and so any arrests lindsey? >> reporter: well, i spoke with tampa police this morning and arrests. one victim is in the hospital. the other man died. and right now, they are working

they release the names. this all began here and then ended about two miles away. police tell me it all started when both victims were riding in the same car and then another car pulled up and shots rang out. and now i want you to take a look at this. we want to show you this video again. a large crowd gathered in the neighborhood after the shooting. emotions just ran high. and look at this. you can see a man so upset, he tries to cross the police line. and police have to take him down to keep that from happening. and now investigators believe that these men were targeted because of an ongoing dispute. but right now, police are not releasing their names. as soon as we get more information about who these victims are, or a description of the shooter or shooter, we're going to let you know onair and online. gayle -- >> all right, we look forward to the updates. thank you so much. happening today, the hulk

later this website gawker is back on. late they are morning, -- website gawker is back on. josh, a lot of people are watching to see exactly what happens here. >> reporter: yes, a lot of people not only here in the bay area but across the country are keeping an eye on the trial. and now hogan is expected to return to the stand today in the civil trial and he will be cross-examined by attorneys for gawker. and now hogan whose real name is terry gene bollea is suing the website for $100 million. following opening statements yesterday, hogan it was first witness to take the stand. he told the court that he had a friendship with the radio shock jock and his now former wife. she is the woman seen in the tape with hogan. the former prowrestler testified that he was aware they had a security camera inside the home but he didn't know he was being recorded. he claims the release ruined his image.

there for two weeks. they're telling you, if you purchased gas there, you will want to check your bank statements or call the bank. this is going to be so alarming to parents. we are hearing from a 13-year- old florida girl about how she escaped from a man attemped to kidnap her. it was all caught on surveillance video in pompano beach. when the driver of the tan suv stopped and asked her if she was walking home from school. she did the right thing, she ignored him but you can see her running away there. she says he turned around, stopped the vehicle and approached her from behind and grabbed her. her big backpack and quick thinking may have saved her life. >> i was like pulling his wrist off like away from each other. and that's when he, like, i guess he gave up and i kept running. and he ran back to his car. >> really brave. she was in tears when she

deputies are still looking for the would-be kidnapper and have released this sketch of him. >> terrifying. we are learning more about the final plans for former first lady man single digits reagan. her funeral will be held friday at the ronald reagan presidential library and her body will lie in repose for the public to visit tomorrow and thursday. right now, flags are at half staff in her honor. the actual funeral service will be closed to the public. nancy reagan will be buried next to her husband. she died sunday at the age of 94. leigh's here with another beautiful day. >> it's really going to be quite comfortable all day, including this morning where there's the slightest chill in the air but it warms up quickly. let me show you each hour. around 8:00, 59 degrees. we get up to 63 just an hour later. and then another five degrees warmer to 68 at -- at 10:00.

lower humidity keeps it comfortable outside. 74 degrees around 7:00 p.m. great weather for the spring training games. in clearwater, sarasota, lakeland, a lot of sunshine. the games start just after 1:00. and temperatures as you can see will already be in the mid- to upper 70s when the games start. so it could get toasty in the stands. tomorrow, the trend continue, 82 wednesday. 38 thursday. we get closer to up ther 70s next week. as we check on traffic on the 8s this morning, more and more people start hitting the roadways. >> that's right. this afternoon, keep in mind, if you're headed out to the spring training, especially in clearwater, it tends to get very congested. usually about 45 minutes before the game. so leave early or if you're going out early since it's lunchtime, maybe bring a lunch and not have to go in the traffic. meanwhile, bradenton, cortez road at 14th street, a collision in the bradenton area. 301 looks good as well as i-75 in the sun coast area.

it's 5:42. in your vote, this is decision states. today's biggest race, michigan. polls open in less than two hours. democratic candidates have been state. they're battling for a total of 148 delegates while republicans have 59 delegates at stake. democrats hillary rodham clinton and senator bernie sanders appeared on fox news channel for a town hall in detroit monday night. senator sanders was the first to take questions. he stressed that he is determined to win the nomination. while clinton responded to michael bloomberg's announcement that he will not be seeking a run for the presidency. other states having primaries today, mississippi where republicans have 40 delegates and democrats have 41.

idaho and hawaii will also head to the polls today. well despite the importance of the primaries, candidates your vote. just today alone, senator rally in miami. donald trump will hold a press conference in jupiter. and senator marco rubio will come pain in sarasota. on wednesday, there's the democratic debate in miami followed by the republican debate in south florida. and news channel 8 will be there covering that. all of the candidates know the importance of the florida vote. just take a look at these numbers from a new university poll here in florida. 30% of likely gop primary voters back florida senator marco rubio. but that's eight points behind front runner donald trump. and senator ted cruz has 17% support. despite the numbers, senator rubio is not slowing down. he will continue to crisscross the state today. there's a rally in sarasota at the dolphin aviation hanger at 5:00 p.m.

monday afternoon and he told supporter, quote, a turning here in florida. before the rally, he told us that he is not giving up. ballot. and we're going to win florida. this is going to be a very long process. you guys have never covered a cam like this. no one, not even donald trump 1,237 delegates. >> this morning, senator ted cruz has a key endorse. in a contested state. the mississippi governor announced monday that he is endorsing senator ted cruz for the republican nomination. he urged the people of mississippi to stand behind senator cruz today. before landing today in florida, front runner donald trump held a rally in madison, mississippi. trump has won about 44% of the delegates so far but he still needs 853 delegates to secure the nomination. and florida's primary, it's march 15th, that is exactly one week from today. and we want to remind you that early voting is going on right now.

you need to know on wfla.com. happening today, first lady michelle obama will deliver remarks in celebration of international women's day. the first lady will visit union market in washington, d.c. and speak to dozens of young girls as part of the let girls learn initiative. this is all part of a government effort to help girls complete their education. this is video you have to see. a suspect is in custody after leading police on a wild chase in south carolina. police claim the suspected shoplifter took to city streets trying to escape. you see him right there, the hood of the car blocking the view. and he ran over stop sticks and barreled through two counties before the chase ended. no one was injured during the wild ride. all right, don't look. miles and miles of highway in houston shut down for hours because of this. it's a naked woman dancing on top of an 18-wheeler. i would say go girl but it's totally inappropriate. deputies responded around 9:00 a.m.

and we warm up already to 75 at noon. 80, warm and sunny and a nice breeze around 3:00 p.m. and like i said, there are spots that are cool. notice tampa, sitting at 64. over in polk county, 55 in bartow and lakeland. 58 sarasota. and i checked in with betty in plant city where the strawberry festival continues. she is at 56 degrees this morning. high pressure, we like high pressure. that leads to the calm conditions and around it, you get the clockwise wind flow. with winds out of the southeast, a few degrees warmer now, southeast wind gets us to 80 today. and the other thing the high pressure does is it blocks any storm system. a lot of rainout west. while we stay warm, sunny. in fact, getting warmer, 80 today. 82 tomorrow. and 83 thursday. and next rain chance this weekend. leslee, how about traffic on the 8s? so we have a couple problem to spots out here. we start off in the bradenton area.

weather and traffic on the 8s. a beautiful afternoon. 80 degrees, just a few clouds. feeling warm and there will be this nice southeast breeze as well. the only issue, sorry for you pollen suffers or anyone who doesn't like the car coated in yellow, high pollen from oak, juniper all the way through the week. so during the evening, temperatures back through the 70s with an overnight low of 62 which is slightly above average. leslee, how about traffic on the 8s? eastbound cortez road right at 14th street, we have a collision. it's apparently tying up some lanes there. so keep that in mind. and meanwhile, a good drive here on i-75.
