crews continue to clear out the snow.70 percent of roanoke city students ride the bus to school-- so district leaders monitoring road condition. administrators also hope to clear sidewalks-- near bus stops-- so students don't have to stand in the street. in bedford county - firefighters scrambled to an ice rescue this afternoon - near moneta. the victim - a cow - wandered onto a frozen pond and fell through the ice. firefighters were called to the pond - *near* spring lake stock yard - around 4 o'clock. firefighters in special suits used ropes and a tractor to get the cow out of the frigid water - alive. despite their best efforts - rescuers tell us - the cow didn't make it. workers at the stockyard say - the cow wandered away from a neighboring farm - and made it onto the pond - which is on a property line. as rain and possibly sleet or snow - passes through our area- -local officials are warning drivers to be aware of icy road conditionsovernight some roads may become slick and

virginia state police say black ice-- has caused many accidents - since the people cannot see the ice on the road. troopers are warning drivers to take it slow- especially during the morning commute. "if you do have to leave in those early morning hours, is just, you know, travel below the speed limit, at a safe speed, because you really can't see black ice, and if you do hit it, and you're going at the speed limit or above, there's a chance you might slide off the roadway, hit another vehicle."state police suggest-- waiting until temperatures are above freezing before driving - if possible. road crews - are still working to remove all of the snow from the roads.that includes rural roads in bedford county. we found v-dot crews - trying to clear snow off of villamont road - this afternoon near blue ridge.at that time - temps were in the forties - and a few sprinkles were falling.but could we be in danger of a refreeze tonight? chief meteorologist john carroll is here now to

because each day the red cross was closed, was another day patients weren't getting the platelets and blood they so desperately need"you do take it home with you when you cant get to work, because it does our donors too"many of whom are regulars, coming back week after week..."i come in every two or three weeks and lay around for a couple hours" larry locke discovered his hidden talent after donating blood--his platelet count was extremely high, allowing him to provide enough platelets for three people at once... you can find more information about the american red cross- on virginia first dot com. in roanoke- investigators are trying to determine what sparked a house fire this morning.firefighters responded to a home on the 3500 block of ventnor avenue south-east just after 7 this morning.the red cross is helping one person who was displaced by the fire. in radford, police are investigating a sex assault.it happened at a home in the 300 block of second avenue last thursday night.the victim gave police a vague discription of the suspect.he is a white man, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall, with dirty, curly blonde hair and between 18 and 21 years old.anyone with information is asked to call police. police in galax are looking into online threats made toward a school.police say those threats were made to the chestnut creek school of the arts from a facebook picture- that appears to be from someone associated with the school.officials say they are looking into whoever made the

it as a crime. around the commonwealth-we first told you about the wythe county sheriff's department adding "in god we trust" to the back of their cruisers. and now tazewell county sheriff's have done the same thing.they posted this photo on their facebook page with the new decal.last week, they added the phrase "in god we trust" on the back of their cruisers. the sheriff says the decals were made with donations from churches and people in the community who attended concealed weapons classes. in franklin county-the first woman to lead ferrum college will retire this summer. jennifer braaten, is the 10th president of the methodist college.in a release, officials say family health issues led to her decision to step down.a committe is in the process of finding her replacement. wfxr news is your local election headquarters.and just days before the iowa caucuses- jerry falwell junior endorses donald trump for president. liberty university president announced his ensorsement -

a rare virus that causes birth defects in unborn babies has been reported in virginia.this is first confrimed case of the zika virus in virginia-- and the second case in the united states.the person

where the zika virus transmission is ongoing. this is the first reported, laboratory-confirmed case of zika in a traveler returning to virginia.health officials say the virus was caught through the bite of an infected mosquito, but since it's not mosquito season in virginia, this poses no risk to others.officials say this is the time of year when more people travel to countries with warmer climates-- where zika virus is found. health officials suggest pregnant women consider postponing travel to zika-affected countries while pregnant- because of the risk the virus poses to unborn babies. coming up in tonight's ag life report-a local winery wants to develop a research center- to study bees!how they plan to do it- and why next! and restocking after the storm- coming up- how a local

blankets of snow - but come springtime they'll be buzzing with anticipation."we really want to contribute back to the agricultural environment."tess gallagher co-owns the winery and research company - avila scientific - with her husband, rik obiso. he says the last time bees were on the winery was 2013 - when the last of their population somehow disappeared."two colonies basically died and disappeared. and that's with us taking really good care of them. and the other one - i honestly have no idea."now they're creating a research center and bee sanctuary in floyd - where they are inviting researchers from radford university and virginia tech - to team up with avila scientific - to study bees - which includes finding ways to try to stop the bee population's decline. "it's a fairly significant problem. and a lot of times the decline of the bee population, it's not known why a hive will die."standup: "the research will be divided between the center in floyd and here at the winery, finally bringing hives back to the vineyards.""the variety of food that's available to you after, or with no bees is extraordinarily limited." gallagher says bees help pollinate raspberries and blackberries grown at the winery. she says many crops

million bottles of water are now being sent to flint's 10 thousand students dealing with the flint water crisis.the bottles were donated by walmart, coca cola, pepsico and nestle. flint gained national attention after their tap water was found to be contaminated with toxic levels of lead.state and federal officials have struggled to provide clean water for residents. and because of that --- there's thousands of plastic bottles left from donations.one resident is concerned about all the plastic water bottles being used. so she's starting an effort to recycle them.she wants friends and volunteers to help her round up the thousands, if not millions, of plastic bottles.flint does offer curbside recycling, but the woman says not enough people are using it or are aware of it. "we're going to pass out and give each citizens of flint a plastic bag whenever they need it and have them bag up bottles and put them to the

recycling to convince recycling companies to place recycling bins around the city to make it easier for people to recycle and keep the bottles out of landfills in san diego-everything is back to normal tonight after gunfire was reported at the naval medical center today.a navy spokesperson said a witness reported hearing 3 gunshots in the basement of one of the buildings.police then police staged nearby, directing pedestrians and cars away from the building.but in the end- officials say nothing was found.
