morning fire in methuen. crews on the scene right now to make sure hot spots do not reignite. >> heather: crews out there right now and stephanie coueignoux is live on the scene. we know a mother and baby had to be treated for smoke inhalation. >> reporter: yeah, heather and jason, mom and baby actually lived next door, but the smoke from the fire was so thick that they had to be hospitalized. taking a look behind me, you can see the fire still on scene. we're talking about the in fact, maybe you can see some of the firefighters going around in flash lights. they're finally able to get to take a look at what happened. i do want to show you when this fire was still happening. from the photos you can see the flames shooting out of the roof. deputy chief scott sullivan told me the fire started on the second floor. thankfully the second floor was

there on the first floor get out safely. as you can imagine, people were sleeping at the time. one firefighter here on scene told me that he doesn't believe the smoke alarms were working. sullivan told us, that it was thanks to the action of two police officers that allowed everyone to get out safely. >> officers went in and got 10 to 20 people out of the building before our arrival and structure was pretty much involved in the second floor into the the attic area head start. >> reporter: again, they've been able to get out those flames. three dogs were also inside. they were able to get out safely. but this building has several unique features. coming up in 30 minutes, the challengers firefighters say they saved when trying to maintain these flames. in methuen, stephanie coueignoux, fox 25 news. >> heather: all right. we're following breaking news this morning, one person has

death of a marlboro baby continues this morning. that baby boy found unresponsive thursday alongside his parents. fire department officials tell fox 25, they treated two adults for a possible drug overdose. neighbors and class mates identified the parents as 19-year-old delagos and sergei kravtiz. they've not identified the person involved in the case, though. the baby was only two months old. children and families is now involved. >> jason: right in the middle of lunch, cameras captured a car smashing into a building. >> reporter: security cameras caught a scary moment in a restaurant. a man lifted from the seat as the car drives into the window into his booth. >> drove right into the building. >> reporter: watch from this angle and you can see the car go

>> heard the update on that, but the person was turning blue. >> reporter: we ran along with the brewster ambulance in quincy, typical overdose response can be chaotic, which is why the dea is warning first responders that coming in contact with street fentanyl can have fatal consequences. >> we've been advised, it's going to take a lot more than narcan. number two, there's an affect even for the rest of us. >> reporter: paramedics tell us that now an overdose, knowing that fentanyl can be absorbed through the skin, they have to take extra precautions like wearing gloves. >> an overall view of the job to get done, we still have to go in to do what we do. >> reporter: the street drug being made in mexico and smuggled across the border. they first discovered fentanyl in rhode island in december of 2014 and quickly spread throughout new england.

i have more on that coming up. >> jason: following breaking news from portland oregon. where police say one person was shot during an antitrump protest early this morning. this marks the second night of violent demonstrations in that city. police reporting that people were throwing things at officers there just trying to keep the peace. right now investigators are not saying whether the shooting was tied to the protest or just close to it. but we do know it happened where people were marching in portland. this is people blocking traffic in oh limp pia washington. the state's capital city. groups rallying all day friday, chanting no trump, no kk, no fares u.s.a. in georgia, hundreds there gathered in the streets in atlanta, some of them, as you can see right here, burned an american flag, before trying to make their way on to a highway. president-elect trump has not said anything about last night's

commend thursday night's protesters for their passion. >> jason: also following breaking news overseas where a suicide bomber killed four people at the biggest military base in afghanistan. four people heard at bagram air field as they were getting ready for post veterans day fun run. the victims not identified yet but they say all of the injured are afghan nationals and all of the people killed foreign nationals. the base had several layers of security so it's unclear how someone go suicide vest. >> heather: happening now, crews are on the scene of a fire in methuen. a dozen people evacuated and a mother and baby taken to the hospital. fox 25 stephanie coueignoux is live for us this morning on the scene at the corner of pleasant and broadway streets. stephanie, we've been told this is notten a easy battle for firefighters. >> reporter: yeah. that's because the firefighters say the building that caught fire is historic.

this building is on a hill. you can see that hole in the roof area. that is where the building caught fire. firefighters say they couldn't get the ladder truck very close. and had to drag all of the hoses up this hill making it very challenging. i do want to show you what it looked like when they arrived earlier this morning. you can see from this photo, flames shooting from the roof right there. two boston police officers were actually the first to respond here. and they were the ones who evacuated dogs managed to get out safely. but the smoke was so thick that a mother and baby next door ended up going to the hospital for smoke inhalation. another challenge to firefighters is that roof of this historic building is made out of metal making it hard for them to fight the flames. and that wasn't all. >> i was told that this used to be a church it's wide open on the second floor, which gave the fire a head start also, because

weather watcher in mashpee reporting upper 20s this morning. freezing on parts of the cape certainly the vineyard. winds right now, they've come down. they're running 5 to 15 miles an hour. but that's enough to make you want to grab the extra layer and cover up some exposed skin. because it feels like 21 in worcester. feels like 27 in boston and beverly i have your wind chill of 25 right now. all right. spartan race, we talked about that earlier. at fenway, it is sunny events going on all day out there at the park. running at 10:00 a.m. temps up out of the 30s and into the lower 40s. and by day, in the middle 40s. nice for getting the blood pumping. you'll be running quickly with that brisk wind especially this morning. but, again, tapering down throughout the rest of the day. there's your worcester forecast. you're going to say the breezier in the higher terrain. you'll see temperatures in the 30s through 10:00 a.m. and by noon in the lower 40s after

down tonight. there are those high temperatures for you. we'll be running around 50, in providence, new bedford, that's that warmer corridor, a northwest wind gradually shifts westward throughout the day and tapers off a bit throughout the rest of the morning. then we go ahead to tomorrow. and look how much milder we will be. 40s today, but 50s tomorrow. and i think even a couple of spots. could touch 60 degrees tomorrow afternoon. so for the patriots game, if you're going to be out of gillette, we're looking it's sunny. not too much wind after dark. especially those winds will taper down. it will be chilly in the early 40s. but nice football weather midnight number right around 40 degrees. this thing getting wrapped up. the future cast model going forward, we do have to watch this coastal storm. we're dry on monday. late monday night some showers could enter the south coast, the cape and islands. waking up tuesday morning, we see this area of low pressure getting closer to the coastline and then it could track right

temperatures right now upper 20s and lower 30s just about area wide. and the wind gusts are coming down. let me show you these over the last three hours. how they're disappearing. and that's a good sign. we're not going to have blustery wind like yesterday, but a cool sunshine day with wind temperatures in the 20s. in boston and portsmouth all reporting the wind chills in the 20s to start the day. sunshine, ipswich, your forecast in the 30s and out 47 by 1:00 p.m. and trying to get close to 50 in the greater boston area and the better chance for that will be to the south and west. places like norwood, over down toward the south coast around new bedford. it's going to be a chilly day today. but we do have big changes temperatures swinging back and forthcoming up. >> heather: back and forth, jason, thank you. >> jason: right now a dozen people evacuated in an early morning fire in methuen.

making sure the hot spots is do not reignite. >> heather: we find stephanie coueignoux live on the scene. stephanie, a mother and a baby had to be treated for smoke inhalation on the scene. >> reporter: yeah. and heather and jason, mom and baby actually lived next door. but the smoke from the fire was so thick that they did have to be hospitalized. taking a look behind me, you can see the fire department still blocked off pleasant street. and just about 30 seconds ago, two investigators still trying to determine exactly what happened. i do want to show you some photos, though, of when the fire was still going. and you can see from the photos, the flames shooting out of the roof. again, the cause this morning, still under investigation. but deputy chief cut sullivan told me the fire started on the second floor. thankfully the second floor was empty, which absolutely helped everyone living inside get out. they were all on the first floor. but, again, this started very early in the morning.

scene told me that he didn't believe the smoke alarms were working. sullivan says it was actually thank to quick action of two police officers that allowed everyone to get out safely. >> officers went in and got approximately 10 to 12 people out of the building before our arrival. and the structure was pretty much fully involved from the second floor into the attic area. so it had a pretty good head start. everyone inside was able to get out safely. three dogs inside also safe this morning. this is a historic building with several unique features. coming up in 30 minutes, the challenges firefighters had to face when trying to maintain these flames. in methuen, stephanie coueignoux fox 25 news. >> heather: we're following breaking news this morning as well for you. one person has been shot in the height of antitrump protests in portland oregon.

>> heather: again, this developing overnight. portland police tweeting about the shooting around 4:00 this morning our time and marks another night of violence as demonstrators march through that city there. at this point, we do not know if it was actually part of the protest but it happened in the same area as the march. police ordered anyone who did not witness the shooting to get out of there immediately. it comes on the heels of chaos thursday night as protests started throwing objects at police and at a cars. >> jason: yesterday marked the third night of protests around the country. the situation in new york overnight, protesters went to the source of their frustration, trump tower. >> heather: in philadelphia, this was the scene there, people standing in the streets, blocking traffic. and anyone from getting by there: we've also been seeing our share of the protests here in boston. but the message on the boston common last night wasn't one of

the victims say three people forced their way into that apartment. armed with a gun, ran,saed the home. made off with cash. but fortunately, no one was hurt and police still investigating this morning. >> jason: four days after the election and donald trump is slowly building his home made administration. at the top is his vice-president on the far left, mike pensz. the next three names and faces should be similar. former new york city rudy giuliani, new jersey governor chris christie and retired mike flynn and his three children, ivanka, donald and eric are also on that bid. kelly ayotte should be tapped as the next secretary of defense, two inside knowledge tell her a top contender for the job. fox 25 reached out for comment but haven't heard back.

on monday. the investigation into the death of a baby in marlboro continues this weekend. that baby boy was found unresponsive thursday alongside his parents. a fire department official tells fox 25, they treated two adults for a possible drug overdose. neighbors and classmates identified the parents for us, as 19-year-old grecia gallegos and 23-year-old sergei kravtiz. the district attorney has not identified those people, though. according to was only two months old. we're told the department of children and families is involved now. >> jason: this is pretty scary, cameras capture a car slamming into a sandwich shop in danvers. a very close call for a man trying to enjoy his meal. >> reporter: security cameras capture the scary moment. a man lifted from his seat as the car drives into the window and into his booth. >> just drove right into the building.

car go through the glass forcing that customer to his feet. >> it was again a booth, thank god they didn't get hurt. >> reporter: jimmy diantgikis opened jimmy's in 1967. debbie was behind counter. >> scared the daylights, i probably said a bad word too. >> reporter: after the initial shock she went to check on the driver. >> i was panicking, thought she was hurt. >> reporter: the woman was not inre the booth. jimmy says the man was a customer who has been going through the restaurant for years. >> she was very calm, she came inside, she had her food, she and her family. >> the driver says her floor mat got caught and she couldn't stop. still ahead in 30 minutes, the changes the restaurant just made to that building that likely prevented a much more serious situation there.

body of a missing gloucester fisherman. it was discovered near shore drive in gloucester yesterday. police say de-santos was swept out to sea tuesday by a big wave while fishing on rocks with a friend. that other man was able to cling to a rock and he was rescued. this as the coast guard suspended its search for three missing boaters from new bedford. the group left the cape cod marina for a fishing trip tuesday. a friend reported them the coast guard covered nearly 4,000 nautical miles in cape cod bay. but never found the fishermen or their boat. >> jason: we have video showing the pitch black conditions crews were up against. sky fox up in the scene over the daylight hours. the coast guard says the man were sailing when they ran aground yesterday afternoon and radioed for helpful a choker was sent to get the men off of the boat. the good news, they were not

epi pen. her zero copay spiked up to 202. so allison began to wonder about the expired epi pens she thankfully never used but required to purchase. >> this one expired in 2015. the solution is perfectly clear. can this still be good for years past its expiration date? >> reporter: what allison is referring to are these instructions on the back of epi pens that state replace if solution is discolored. yet none of the pens in allison's bag have turned color. not even this one which expired in 2012. >> according to mylan's website, the coloration changes indicate the effectiveness of the product may have decreased or been affected. fox 25 contacted dozens of hospitals in the area to test allison's expired epi pen for

the doctor at boston children's hospital, he says you shouldn't use a discolored epi pen, an expired epi pen may be -- fox 25 found a recent study that tested two years after their expiration date and found 94% or more retention in the epinephrine dose listed on the label for all go ahead and use it but should always call 911 and go to the hospital afterwards. >> allison, says if the choice of saving her kids is clear. >> if that's all you have, it's better than nothing. >> heather: beyond the expiration date, the product may not remain safe for use. the company also announced it's making a generic epi pen, $300

>> jason: interesting story. the doctor we talked to it's okay. so what's the deal. >> heather: here's the take away. the bottom line. doctors say using an expired epi pen isn't going to do any harm. the problem is the question of effectiveness. and you're dealing with a life-threatening situation, life-threatening allergic reaction. do you really want to chance it? that's the question the consumer has to pay. a doctor says if you have one you should always call 911 right away. and they can advise if you want to use a second dose as well if the first one isn't as effective for a mom like allison, three kids in their household, imagine how much money they shell out for them. >> jason: bottom line, talk to your doctor. >> heather: right. always.

as we sunset a little earlier these days. temperatures area wide, upper 40s most spots. a few 50 degree readings. norwood, new bedford, providence, could easily jump up around 50 or so. winds will be fairly quiet through the day. in fact, you're seeing this here at 1:00. there are your temperatures. and you see the wind barbs. those are the wind. and watch how they pick up again. see the increase in speeds on the winds at 8:00 tonight. as our south. we start to see some of the gusty or southwest winds take over. that's going to continue through the night. as the coast and higher elevations still a bit of a breeze as you wake up on sunday morning. scattered clouds sunday morning with numbers in the 40s to begin. and then on sunday afternoon, that west and south westerly wind flow continues to be stronger to the south. but look at those temperatures changing and warming up.

shot during a protest early in the morning. they say people were throwing things at police officers trying to keep the peace. it's not clear if the shooting was connected to the protest but we do know it happened where people were marching overnight. >> heather: it's not limited to portland by any means. this is creditoo -- video of crowds in washington's capital, oh limp no kkk, no fascious u.s.a. in atlanta burning an american flag trying to make their way on to the highway. trump hasn't said that last night's demonstrations he did say thursday's protesters should be commended for their passion. >> jason: following breaking news overseas, where a suicide bomber killed at least four people at the u.s. military base

they were getting ready for the post veterans day fun run. the victims not identified. but all of the injured are afghan nationals and all of the people killed are foreign nationals. the base had several layers of security. so it's still unclear how someone was able to get inside with a suicide vest. >> heather: time now 7:32. happening now, crews on the scene of a fire in methuen. about a dozen people evacuated including a mother and baby who had to be taken to the hospital. fox 25 stephanie coueignoux is morning on the corner of broadway streets and stephanie this wasn't easy for firefighters. >> reporter: yeah, that's because this is a historic building. it used to be an old church. take a look behind me, this is firefighters here. this is the blue building we're talking about. you can see it's on a hill. firefighters say they couldn't get their ladder truck very

hoses up this hill making for challenging situations. i do want to show you video of early this morning and you can see from the photos flames shooting from the roof. two police officers were actually the first to respond. they were the ones who evacuated everyone. all 10 to 12 residents and three dogs were able to get out safely. the smoke so thick that a mother and the baby next door went to the hospital for smoke inhalation. now firefighters tell me that the roof is made out o the second floor wide open, which caused those flames to spread so quickly. and i just spoke with one man who witnessed this entire thing. he says that he woke up to a loud cracking noise and raced outside. >> i heard all kind of racket. and i went outside, and on the right-hand side of this building here, the flames were sky high. they fought hard and tried to contain it. they did a pretty good job. because it was up pretty good. >> reporter: thankfully no one

second floor. that absolutely helped get everyone out safely. again, the cause is still undetermined. that investigation happening right now. and, again, firefighters still on scene just monitoring for those hot spots. in methuen, stephanie coueignoux, fox 25 news. >> heather: this friday, a lunch rush at jimmy's in danvers was in full swing when a car came colliding through a window at the restaurant and into a boothed where a customer was eating. check out the video right here, you can see the car going right through the gla left-hand side of your screen. you can see that table and the customer is getting up as that table moved. that customer barely gets out of way in the nick of time. wow. the owner had just put in a new pain of safety glass in the window and says that might have saved the people inside. >> we changed it two months ago and thank god it happened and saved the guy's life. you know, and everybody else here. >> the driver had just gotten her car detailed and she told police the floor mat got stuck

so she couldn't stop. fortunately, as you saw, no one was hurt. >> jason: homeowners in franklin still seeding this weekend after someone ran around their neighborhood, spray painting homes, cars and signs. it happened to more than a dozen homes in franklin. police do not believe it's politically motivated and right now they're not investigating as a hate crime. but some of the graffiti there is racially charged. one woman had something offensive painted on her garage chicago cubs. >> a cubs flag hanging so they obviously used that as ammunition to write things about the cubs. the cubs won the world series who is mad about that? >> jason: police do not have suspects, but they do believe kids were involved. >> heather: a man wanted for stalking left his two-year-old alone in a car as he tried to evade police. he got in his car and ran off when officers got to him on route 128.

down the road using a stun gun. he's now charged with endangering a child and resisting arrest. a teenager is expected to live after she was somehow impaled yesterday afternoon on shandon street. showing a crew having to cut over the wraut iron fence. she was impaled substitute that's taking dunkin' donuts to court. >> heather: and a local man says he is the reason donald trump is headed to the white house. >> if you're unhappy, can you blame me. if you are happy, i you can thank me. by the way, i'm the guy who did it. >> heather: full disclosure there.

man and woman wanted in that crash were wanted by police for stealing the car. when barbie slowed down, she says the man reached into her car and attacked. she is a marshal arts instructor, though, she says it's fortunately her training that likely saved her life. >> i had these instincts taught to me that it just took over. when i no longer felt safe. >> heather: barbie says she punched and kicked the man. but ultimately he did manage to get away with the car. caught, though, in worcester. they are now due in court monday. barbie's mother also hurt. she's now scheduled for surgery on monday. the investigation into the death of a marlboro baby continues this weekend. that baby boy was found unresponsive on thursday alongside his parents. a fire department official tells fox 25, those two adults were treated for a possible drug overdose. neighbors and classmates identify the parents to fox 25

i hate christmas. >> reporter: she wanted to know what happened. so she had an autopsy done. the cause, acute fentanyl intoxication, a powerful opiate commonly used to ease pain for patients near the end of life. >> he says the amount of fentanyl in his blood system, they're surprised he didn't die right away. >> it only takes two grams of fentanyl as a lethal dose we're talking about a of sand. >> reporter: speth dea michael, is tracking fentanyl here in new england. he says the drug on the streets is different than used in hospitals. this fentanyl is not only deadly to the users but also to the people who respond to overdoses. >> the danger with fentanyl is if you touch it or inhale it, it can be extremely deadly. >> the update on that one, but the person was turning blue.

a ambulance in quincy. an overdose response can be chaotic. coming in contact with fentanyl can have a fatal consequences, they've been warned. >> we're been advised it takes a lot more than narcan. number two, it's dangerous to us. >> reporter: knowing that fentanyl pill can be absorbed through the skin, they to take extra gloves. >> have to have somebody there as an overall view, we still have to go and do what we have to do. >> reporter: ferguson says they first encountered fentanyl in rhode island in early 2014 and then quickly spread throughout new england. >> now we're in a situation where we assume that any heroin that we encounter or see, that most likely there's fentanyl mixed in.

washington. no trump, no kkk, no fascious u.s.a., they were chanting. in atlanta, burning an american flag there. and protesters trying to make their way on a highway. trump right now hasn't said anything about last night's demonstrations. but he did commend thursday's protesters for their passion. >> jason: the taliban is now claiming responsibility for their attack in an in afghanistan. four people killed and 14 hurt. and it happened at 5:30 local time. the attack was being planned for several months before it was carried out. victims not identified yet. but afghan officials say those killed are foreign nationals while all of the people hurt are afghan knee. the base has several levels of security. so it's still unclear how someone was able to get inside with a suicide vest.

methuen working to figure out how it started. this after dozens of people had to be evacuated including a mother and baby who had to be hospitalized. fox 25 stephanie coueignoux monitoring the situation all morning long and joins us from the corner of pleasant and broadway streets. this was a tough fire for firefighters. >> reporter: yeah, that's because it was a historic building. and it was actually a church. take a look behind of fire trucks just showed up likely switching shifts right now. we're talking about this blue building up on the hill. that's one of the challenges. one of their fire trucks fire ladders couldn't get very close to pour the water on. they had to carry those hoses up the hill and up all of those steps right there. i do want to show you some photos of what it looked like when they arrived earlier this morning. from the photos you can see the flames shooting from the roofer. two police officers were

respond. and they were the ones to evacuate everyone inside. all 10 to 12 residents as well as three dogs able to get out safely. however, they told me the smoke from the fire was so thick that a mother and baby living next door ended up going to the hospital for smoke inhalation. firefighters say this old historic building had a metal roof. they also said that the second floor was wide open. and that actually caused the flames to spread very quickly. earlier we spoke with one who says that he woke up to a very loud cracking noise and ran outside. >> i heard all kind of racket. so i ran outside. and on the right-hand side of this building here. the flames were sky high. they fought hard and they tried to contain it. they did a pretty good job because it was up pretty good. >> reporter: yeah, and when we showed you the close up of that building. you could see that part of that second floor was destroyed by this. luckily no one was actually living on the second floor at the time.

right now. so there are your highs 45 to 50. closer to the upper 40s, i think around boston common. the winds subside today. you'll need your sunglasses. it's just going to be a little cooler than normal. big temperature changes to tell you about. i'm tracking that next coastal storm straight ahead. >> jason: all right. thank you, jason. right now, this morning, about a dozen people forced from their home in the early morning fire in methuen. crews on the scene, making sure the hot spots do not reignite. >> heather: a pretty difficult situation out there. this all broke out at fox 25 stephanie coueignoux is there right now live for us. and stephanie, a mother and a baby both had to be treated for smoke inhaltation. >> reporter: yeah, they actually live next door to the fire. but the smoke so thick that they did have to be hospital ietzed. in the last 20 owe last 30 minutes, a hot spot did reunite. smoke is now billowing once again from the roof of this blue building that you see right

ladder truck. and we are expecting them to start pouring water on to that area. i do want to show you photos of when the fire was still going this morning. from the photos you can see the flames shooting out of the roof. that's where the worse of the damage is. the cause still under investigation. but deputy chief scott sullivan told me that the fire started on the second floor. now, thankfully the second floor was empty, which helped all of the residents living there get out safely of a lot of people were sleeping. one firefighter told me that he doesn't believe any of the smoke alarms were actually working. sullivan says he thinks it was thanks to the action of two police officers that allowed everyone to get out safely. >> officers went in and got approximately 10 to 12 people out of the building before our arrival and the structure was pretty much fully involved from the second floor into the attic area so it had a pretty good

driving in taunton connecticut on thursday when it spotted a car crash. what they didn't realize, no way of knowing, the man and woman involved, were actually wanted by police for stealing the car they were in. when barbie slowed down at the scene, she says the man reached into her car and attacked her. the good news, she's a martial arts instructor and she says her training likely saved her life. >> i had these instincts taught to me that it just took over. when >> heather: so fortunate for that. barbie says she was able to punch and kick the man. but ultimately he did get away with the car. the man and woman were eventually caught in worcester. they are now due in court monday. barbie's mother was also hurt. she is now scheduled for surgery on monday. the investigation into the death of a baby in marlboro continues this weekend. that baby boy was found unresponsive thursday alongside his parents.

the pair were treated for a possible drug overdose. neighbors and classmates have identified the parents to fox 25 as 19-year-old grecia gallegos and 23-year-old sergei kravtiz. the da hasn't officially identified those people. but according to neighbors the baby was only about two months old. we're now told the department of children and families is investigates. >> jason: right in the middle of lunch. cameras catch a car slamming into a popular danvers. a man just trying to enjoy his meal. >> reporter: security cameras capture a scary moment inside of a restaurant of a man lifted from his seat as a man drives into the seat. watch again from this angle and you can see the glass, forcing the customer to his feet. >> there was a guy in the booth thank god he didn't get hurt.

>> it felt like a bomb. >> reporter: debbie was mind the counter. >> i probably said a bad word too. >> reporter: after the initial shock she went out to check on the driver. >> i was panicking, i thought she was hurt. >> reporter: the woman was not injured neither was the man in the booth. jimmy tells fox 25, the man was a customer going to that restaurant for 30 years. >> she was very calm. she came inside. she ordered food and she had family. >> jason: the driver said her floor mat got caught on the brake and that's why she couldn't stop. luckily one of the curbs slowed her car down and that's why she crashed into the window. the changes made to the building that likely prevented the situation from getting a whole lot worse. >> heather: an updato a story last week, the coast guard has found the body of a missing gloucester fisherman.

some parents wondering if expired epi pens are safe to use and if costly refills are necessary. i went to the experts to try to get answers. >> it's terrifying to watch your child, you know, die -- sorry -- die before your eyes. >> reporter: allison is no stranger to anaphylactic reactions. her husband and two young children all have severe food allergies, six-year-old cash allergic to tree nuts egg and including corn, coconut and wheat. >> we found out she was anaphylactic to wheat last year when we gave her a little bite of a twizzler. she started gasping for air, not being able to breathe, projectile vomiting. and then hives. >> reporter: allison strictly manages her kids' diets and she carries epi pens everywhere. >> so we have them all over.

them, we need to have three sets of them for each child. so school has to have one. and it has to be in date. you can't bring school an expired epi pen. and then we need one in the home for each of them. and then we need one in our to go bag for each of them. >> jacked up the price of a life saving product. >> reporter: but with a recent insurance price hike for mylan, the maker of the epi pen. allison's zero dollar copay >> 12 or $1300, my jaw dropped. >> reporter: so allison began to wonder about the pile of expired epi pens that she thankfully never had to use but required to purchase. >> this one expired august 2015. the solution is perfectly clear. can this still be good for a year past its expiration date? >> heather: what allison is referring to are these instructions on the back of the epi pens that state replace if solution is discolored.

allison's bag had turned color. not even this one, which expired in 2012. according to mylan's website, discoloration changes indicate the effectiveness of the drug may have decreased or been affected. fox 25 contacted dozens of labs and hospitals in the area to test allison's expired epi pens for their effectiveness, but all of them declined. >> that's a common misbelief. >> reporter: dr. john lee a clinical director of at boston children's hospital. a discolored epi pen, an expired injection may be better than nothing. >> and actually, most epi pens that are expired won't have any discoloration. so you really should just rely upon the expiration date. >> reporter: fox 25 found a recent study that tested 35 injectors two years past their expiration date and found that 90% or more effectiveness.

and go the hospital afterwards. >> reporter: allison says when it comes to the choice of saving the life of her kid, the choice is clear. >> if that's all you have, then it's better than nothing. >> reporter: manufacturer of the epi pen, mylan, says beyond the expiration date, it may not remain safe and okay for use. the company says if you're concerned about price, they will be making a generic epi pen $300 the price of the name brand. >> jason: the company says don't do it. but doctors say it's not that big of a deal. what do people do? >> heather: right. i think the bottom line is that doctors say using an expired epi pen isn't going to hurt anyone. the problem is you're dealing with life and death. nobody wants to take that chance. so the lower effectiveness of the expired drug may not be enough to handle a crisis situation. that's why they always say, if

antitrump marches not limited to portland by any means. video of crowds blocking traffic in olympia, washington state's capital. groups there rallying all day friday. chanting things like no trump, no kkk, no fascious u.s.a. meantime, this is the scene in georgia, hundreds gathering through the streets of that city. some even burning the american flag, which you saw in that photo right there. in the meantime, trying to make trump hasn't said anything about last night's protests, but he did commend thursday night's demonstrators for their passion. >> jason: breaking news overseas taliban claiming responsibility for the deadly attack in bagram air field in afghanistan. 4 people killed, 14 injured, during a veterans day fun run 5:00 a.m. local time. the attack was planned for several months before it was carried out.

killed are foreign nationals while other people hurt are afghan. the base had several layers of security, so still unclear how how somebody was able to breach the outside layers with a suicide vest. >> heather: here at home, happening right now. crews on the scene of a fire that happened overnight in methuen. after about a dozen people had to be evacuated. including a mother and a baby rushed to the hospital. fox 25 stephanie coueignoux live for us this morning at the scene at the corner of pleasant and broadway streets. for firefighters? >> reporter: yeah, that's because this is a historic building. so the way it was built it was very challenging for firefighters. now they just poured water on a hot spot. there was smoke we showed you 30 minutes ago billowing from the roof. that has since dissipated. we're talking about this light blue building on a hill. one of the reasons it's so challenging is because it's on a hill. so the ladder truck couldn't reach it very well.

there. i do want to show you some photos from whenever ifs arrived earlier this morning. and from these photos, you can see the flames there shooting from the roof. two police officers were actually the first to respond. and they were the ones to evacuate everyone. all 10 to 20 people living inside and three dogs able to get out safely. but the smoke was so thick that a mother and baby who were actually living next door had to go to the hospital for smoke inhalation. now firefighters say and the second floor is wide open. so, again, part of that design, making it challenging and allowing those flames to spread very quickly. we spoke with one man earlier this morning who says that he woke up to a very loud cracking noise and then raced outside. >> i heard all kind of racket. so i went outside and on the right-hand side of this building here, the flames are sky high. so they fought hard and they tried to contain it. they did a pretty good job.

>> reporter: yeah, firefighters tell me that no one was living on the second floor. so that helped everyone evacuate safely. again, firefighters they're going to be here for several hours, just to monitor the hot spots. we saw one flare up just about 45 minutes ago. the cause still under investigation. but as soon as you get new information, we'll let you know on air and online at fox25boston.com. in methuen, fox 25 news. >> heather: the friday lunch rush at jimmy's in in full swing when a car came into a window of that rest aunt and into a booth where a customer was eating. it was all caught on camera. check it out. you can see the car on left-hand side of your screen right there. crashes through and the table is lifted over. that customer able to walk up and get away in the nick of time. almost flies out of his seat there. the owner says he had just put in a new pane of safety glass on the window.

enough to give you a chill. feels like 29 in boston. 23 in worcester and some of those colder spots dealing with the breeze along the coast in particular. ipswich, sunny here for today. looking just fine out there. just a little on the breezy side. but with that sunshine. we're in the mid and upper 40s today. same thing around framingham. temperatures by 11:00, recovering into the lower 40s. at 1:00, into 47. high temperatures close to 50 in between hours. and then we begin to slide ba we're slipping back down to the lower 40s. there are your high temperatures today. a couple of 50s as you go southward norwood, the south coast. upper 40s along the north shore and around fitchburg. and we see high temperatures tomorrow right back into the 50s or better. i think a couple of spots could even get to 60 degrees on sunday afternoon. so that sets us up for a great tailgate. sunny skies. we'll still have a breeze tomorrow. but it dies off after sunset.

degrees under clear skies. then there's this next storm to watch. we have low pressure developing down here over the carolinas and now over the georgia coastline making its way toward us. on monday, we're still dry, we're still bright. by tuesday morning, a few showers already pushing on to our coastline. and then they build up northward throughout the day. tuesday, it's a likely rain day, we'll have some wind we'll also have minor coastal flooding concerns because we have the super high astronomical tides and any on shore winds we get will add to that problem. that's one thing to keep close tabs on. as far as the rain amounts best to say lower amounts west. higher amounts to the east. you see that dividing line between the green and the yellow illustrating that for you. here's your seven-day forecast. with the weekend always in view. at 50 today and sunny. a bit on the breezy side. but not as windy like yesterday. tonight is chilly again at 30 degrees.
