not to sell us down the stream. farmer leonard larson owns property near interstate 35... the proposed bakken pipeline would run through it... and 18 iowa counties. the pipeline would carry a half million barrels of crude oil from north dakota... to a distribution center in illinois. the "iowa utilities board" is considering whether the company behind it can acquire the land by using eminent domain. and governor branstad says he'll stand by the board's decision... i don't think that we should say a blanket statement that eminent domain should never be used. but i also believe that the law that is in place that gives the utilities board the responsibility to do it is appropriate. "dakota access" says 68 percent of affected landowners are willing to sign easements... allowing the use of their land. a controversial memorial in

property... the memorial was built in "youngs park"... it consists of a soldier kneeling in front of a cross. an advocacy group threatened to sue if it wasn't removed... claiming it was promoting religion on public grounds. last night the city council voted to move the memorial to private property. a new display... with no cross... will take its place in the park. two metro fire departments will not be fighting flames together... last night the windsor heights city council voted to keep operating its department as is. it comes nearly two years after the city formed a plan to merge with clive's department. the proposal was expected to save money... fix staffing issues... and improve response times. windsor heights now has plans to add an additional firefighter in the next fiscal year. iowans will soon make their way to the polls for election day... in des moines... they will decide the race for mayor and

the polls are open from 7 a-m to 8 p-m... and officials hope voters come flooding in... we are looking for a better turnout than we had four years ago. four years ago in des moines, we had 5100 people vote. weve already had 700 absentee ballots in one of the wards alone, so we think its going to be a better turnout than four years ago. the polk county auditor says a 12 to 15 percent turnout would be considered good. that's compared to a voter turnout of 80 to 85 percent during presidential elections. protests filled the first day on the job for the new university of iowa president... bruce harreld officially became the university's 21st president yesterday. he was unanimously selected by the "iowa board of regents" earlier this year. the university's faculty senate has already voted "no confidence" in harreld... and students say he isn't qualified for the job. but harreld says he won't let

mourning. meanwhile... satellite information is leading to speculation about its cause. reid binion reports... new data, leading to new questions in the russian plane crash that killed 224 passengers saturday. a mysterious heat flash, detected by a u-s satellite when flight 92-68 was flying over the sinai peninsula early saturday. 23 minutes into the flight, the plane dropped off radar, breaking up in air according to officials. former f-a-a investigator david soucie says the key question is exactly where the flash happened. "did that flash start on the ground or did the flash happen in the air."analysts it could indicate a range of possibilities: an engine malfunction, a fire on board, wreckage hitting the ground.......or an explosion from a missile or bomb blast those last two possibilities -- leading to renewed questions about terrorism u-s director of national intelligence james clapper... not ruling it out.
