morning sanders stopped by campaign headquarters in des moines this morning to rally the troops. he says enthusiasm has helped push his campaign neck and neck with hillary clinton.... and told his supporters to "go get 'em". like a lot of other candidates, he's counting on a high turnout. if that happens, sanders says he'll will iowa. we know he's popular with young voters and first time caucus goers.... with his message of a political revolution. he wants to make the government work for the working and middle class... instead of a handful of billionaires. but sanders needs more than just pockets of support in iowa college towns tonight.. he's hoping everyone in the state and beyond will feel the bern. he has embraced the slogan... telling me it means feel the energy, feel the excitement. there's no question, there is a lot of both.. heading into caucus night... dave. our night of caucus coverage is just getting started ... we'll be live tonight lot of both.. heading into caucus night... dave. our night of caucus coverage is just getting started ... we'll

one of the areasthat i've been particularly interested in is the area of children. all of us have a responsibility, to ourselves, to our children, to each other. we intend to be sure that everybody in this room and every child in this state is somebody. no matter where they're born, no matter to whom they are born. our children's future is shaped both by the values of their parents and the policies of their nation. it's time to protect the next generation, fill the lives of our children with possibility and hope, open up the doors so that every child has a chance to live up to his or her god-given potential. i've spent my life fighting for children, families and our country, and i'm not stopping now. (crowd cheers) i'm hillary clinton,

there are those who say we cannot defeat a corrupt political system and fix a rigged economy. but i believe we need to lift our vision above the obstacles in place and look to the american horizon. to a nation where every child can not only dream of goingto college, but attend one. where quality healthcare will bea birthright of every citizen. where a good job is not a wish, but a reality. where women receive equal pay and a living wage is paid to all. an americawhere after a lifetime of labor, there is timefor rest and grandchildren.

moines. tonight this is where the results will pour in from caucus precincts around the state. capital square and west end salvage will serve as headquarters for nbc news and msnbc tonight. earlier today our dave price sat down with the face of nbc news ... lester holt ... to talk caucuses. 141850-142135 can you see anything similar ... i can't remember anything quite like this ... driven by outside events ... hard to understand whats driving the whole conversation ... i was certainly struck by the historical implications ... i recognize this is not 1966 ... but i'm kinda feeling my way through it ... not the smartest room ... give you a dose of the day everyday ... very simple back to basics ... a year ago people didn't care what i thought ... thats one of the cool things about this position." as dave and lester said ...
4:20 pm
as dave and lester said ... we've never seen a campaign season quite like this one before. back at some of those moments that have made the 2016 caucuses so unforgettable. the american people can't afford to wait for ideas that sound good on paper... but will never make it in the real world. the grandmother who has to choose between paying for medicine and paying rent... can't wait. the single mom whodesperately needs a raise... can't wait. the student with amountain of debt can't wait. we can make real progress, right now. i'm caucusing... i'm caucusing... i'm caucusing for hillary clinton.

they're one of the wall street banks that triggered the financial meltdown -- goldman sachs. just settled with authorities for their part in the crisis that put seven million out of work and millions out of their homes. how does wall street get away with it? millions in campaign contributions and speaking fees. our economy works for wall street because it's rigged by wall street. and that's the problem. as long as washington is bought and paid for, we can't build an economy that works for people.

a winner of the iowa caucuses. several years from now, well be talking about the shenanigans that led up to this contest. here now are just a few examples from the past year of the times we stopped and asked, 'what the heck just happened?' it happened the moment president obama won his second term. people started speculating. 'it is true. i am thinking about it. 'once the candidates made it official, we were treated to countless moments that make the last twelve months... ...seem like a blur. 'and go kick isis ass?!' 'the american people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails! thank you.' 'someone literally sent me a threat that said they were going to gut my wife like a deer.' nobody has more outrageous moments than donald trump. he manufactured them like no other candidate in history.
4:23 pm
is.' but in july, trump went too far. he attacked senator john mccain at the family leadership summit in ames. 'hes not a war hero. he is a war hero. hes a war hero because was captured. i like people who werent capture. okay? i hate to tell you.' trump eventually offered his version of an apology to mccain. he refused to apologize to fox news host megyn kelley following the first republican debate. carli fiorinas big moment came in the second debate when she rebuked trumps comments about women... and about fiorinas face. 'i think women all over this country heard very clearly what mr. trump said.' denied permission to land his helicopter at the iowa state fairgrounds, trump descended onto a nearby parking lot. he gave free rides to children, who were thrilled by the experience, if not by the politics. 'i wasnt really focusing on the conversation. i was focusing out the window.' august 22nd... governor chris christies day at the fair was interrupted by animal rights

rid of the protestors. christie tapped into some east coast humor to capitalized on the moment. 'i have to tell ya the truth, when im here in iowa and something like that happens, it feels like im at home. feels like im back in jersey for a couple of minutes!' by the time summer cooled off... fall was heating up. pop star katy perry performed for hillary clinton supporters ahead of the jefferson jackson dinner. by october, trumps lead was in jeopardy. a cnn poll put dr. ben carson in first place in iowa... trump attacked carsons personal accounts of his youth... the story about trying to stab his best friend... but that his friends belt buckle miraculously stopped the knife. 'how stupid are the people of iowa? how stupid are the people of the country to believe this crap?' by december, ben carsons lead had vanished. neither he nor trump... ...attended the iowa republican partys growth and prosperity
4:25 pm
the event at the fairgrounds replaced the straw poll. senator ted cruz drew the most supporters. it was a watershed moment. within a month, cruz rose to the top of the field. 'thank you so much! its so great to be in iowa! were here just fallin out!' january 19th was the day sarah palin returned to the national spotlight ... and the moment writers for saturday night live cheered. 'we turn on the news every morning and are shocked to see were not even on it because weve been replaced by immigrants like geraldo rivera. .'of course, these are just a sampling of times the stars aligned to create something special. if thats what can happen in the days leading up... its not wonder the experts say to expect anything on caucus night. 'as cool as it is, anybody who wants to be the president can come here to iowa and make their case. two years ago she was the star of primary night in iowa ... coming up next, our dave price sits down one-on-one with

mauro @ 30:30- if you go look at history, i think there might have been 2 reporters. one national reporter came to get the results in 1972. no real interest. michael mauro remembers the moment, in 1976, when jimmy carter clinched the iowa caucuses. mauro @ 32:54- he comes out of iowa finishing 2nd in the caucuses. uncommitted came in first. but got a lot of momentum. media picked it up. said, who is this guy? the momentum carried him through and ill be darned, he got elected prez. 33:11 and the rest... as they say... is history.. the iowa caucuses became a political juggernaut.. this year.. is no exception. mauro @ 37:00- never seen anything like to be perfectly honest with you. and just like the 2008 caucuses made history... when an african american won iowa and ultimately the presidency for the first time.. this year could also result in.. dianne@ 43:59- an historic first. dianne bystrom is the director of the carrie chapman catt center for women andolitics.. this year.. a womanodin the caucuses for the first time.. an 403- hillary clinton campaigning more this election cycle than in 2008 one historic nature ofeirst woman prez. 44:10 i frankly, that is something women d men in this country haveen lookinforward to for a ng time. 44:17 she says.. the u-s has some catching up to do. dianne @ 44:3 for a country kthe united states, we areyendother democracie the presentation of women, not ly in congress, but certainly as
