two years. a very long and cold week for tens of millions of us. >> yes. bundle up. meantime, the midwest is dealing with a winter storm this morning. the second in a row in some areas that are still digging out from that last round. now, in addition to the snow, slick roads and freezing temperatures are making matters worses. >> we'll check in with rob in just a moment. let's start in chicago with abc's alex perez. good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, dan and paula. this massive storm over across 1,000 miles, in some areas accumulating very quickly. this morning millions of americans in major cities across the midwest and northeast getting slammed with heavy snow. in minneapolis treacherous travel, cars losing control, flames shooting 14 feet in the air in this intense fiery crash. firefighters battling the blaze in five degree temperatures. cleveland more than 30 inches of
roads causing spinouts in chicago. this car turned over on its side. >> a couple mishaps on the express way. >> on i-75 in flint, michigan a 34-car pileup leaving the interstate flooded with emergency vehicles. winds gusting over 20 miles per hour in some places. as the storm marches east. visibility dropping to less than half a mile. airports also feeling the effects of the storm. planes being deviced. chicago's airport cancelling over 1,000 flights. here in chicago we're bracing for a second dose of heavy snow this afternoon before this storm heads east and creates trouble there. dan. >> thank you for that alex. as we said, the snow is only part of the story. the country is about to be hit with a huge blast of frigid air and rob is in central park in new york city with much more. >> reporter: already cold enough to snow here.

allie. blasts rocking the area outside the soccer stadium killing dozens of police officers. this is part of what has turned out to be a weekend of terror seeing attacks in egypt and nigeria. we have more. lama. >> reporter: two powerful explosions ripped through the heart of istanbul on a bus link in an area popular with tourists. officials say they believe the attackers were targeting police and security forces. they were the deadliest attacks in us stan bull in months. a car bomb exploding out by the city's main soccer stadium ours after the end of a match. these news casters inside the stadium running for cover. plumes of smoke rising above the stadium. the impact was felt across the city.
c cars. then gunfire ringing out. warning shots fired by police. according to turkey's deputy prime minister 45 seconds after the first car bomb a suicide bomber was stopped by police and then blew himself up. there's been a bloody wave of terror attacks in the last 24 hours spreading to egypt where eyewitnesses say a woman had a bag of explosives inside a church killing at least people. most women and children attending a sunday service. in nigeria two suicide bombers striking minutes apart in a crowded market. the blasts are blamed on the militant group boca haram. the twin blasts, the latest attack targeting police forces and this one, now the largest assault in the city to date. now while there is no official claim of responsibility yet, the turkish deputy prime minister
all the hallmarks of pkk which has a history of attacking the country's security forces. dan. >> thank you. a very violent weekend. now to the formation of the trump administration and news on one of the most high profile jobs in washington. officials with the trump transition team telling abc news the president-elect is likely to name this gentleman rex tillerson, the head of exxon mobile as his secretary of state. this choice would not be without the story from the white house. >> reporter: while the trump team says no offer has been made just yet but this morning the president-elect is praising his likely pick. tillerson is a successful oil executive making deals around the world and built relationships with foreign leaders but those relationships are causing concern. >> he's much more than a business executive. a world class player. >> rex tillerson could also be the first secretary of state in
the exxon mobile ceo is trump's likely pick to be the nation's top diplomat and his business ties with russia are raising concerns. tillerson in this 2013 russian government video shaking hands with president putin as he receives the order of friendship award. but trump says those connections are a good thing. >> a great advantage he knows many of the players and he knows them well. he does massive deals in russia, massive deals for >> the dnc is blasting the pick as outrageous and a victory for vladimir putin. republicans are chiming in. >> i have obviously concerns of reports of his relationship with vladimir putin who is a thug and a murderer. >> tillerson's likely deputy secretary is also raising eyebrows. john bolton, a former state department official and u.n. ambassador would bring government experience to the leadership team but also a washington insider. known for being extremely
iraq war. the picks come as trump's team is fighting back against a washington post report that russia interfered in the u.s. presidential election to help trump win. >> what proof does anyone have they affected the outcome? i've heard zero. >> russia's motives remain unclear but a top official says there is evidence both parties were targeted but only material hacked from the democrats was made public. the rnc says that's not true. >> we have not been our own systems show we have not been hacked. >> and now the trump transition team is questioning the creditability of the cia. this morning that distrust is sending shockwaves through the intelligence community. the concern is that once trump is here at the white house he may not trust the intelligence he's given to make critical decisions. >> shockwaves for sure. mary, thank you. abc news chief anchor george stephanopoulos is with us now and hosting "this week" later
about his ties with russia. he needs senate approval. do you expect those ties to give him a hard time? you heard what john mccain is saying. >> he's going to face a lot of questions, no question about that. whether or not he'll be voted down depends on what they discover during those hearings. he's going to face question from john mccain, lindsey graham about his ties to vladimir putin. he got the order of friendship from vladimir putin back in 2012, one of the highest civilian honors. he's also called for sanctions and facing questions about that and facing questions from democrats like senator ed marky saying this is turning over the keys to big oil. how he handles the questions will determine if he gets picked whether he gets confirmed. >> what appears to be a rift between the incoming president -- >> appears to be? >> i'm trying to put it carefully. as we know there's reports that
the election toward trump. trump said these are the same people who said saddam hussein had weapons of mass destruction. upon whom he will rely? >> remember back in october 17 intelligence agencies concluded that russia was trying to interfere in the election. they didn't give them motive. they said maybe they're trying to -- donald trump hasn't accepted that conclusion either and now questioned the conclusion of the cia, that they were actuall it was kind of a stunning review, a lot of intelligence officials fought for him to be questioning the intelligence in this way at this time. at the same time, that he's actually according to some reports not really relying on the presidential daily briefs that both presidents and presidents-elect get every day. we're going to talk to reince priebus about that and about what the relationship with the intelligence community is likely to be inside a trump administration.
