milwaukee man identified himself as a police officer and ordered a passing driver to pull over. police have yet to say what happened next. the suspect is now in police custody. a source with fox 6 tells us he was wearing a police like uniform and his car was similar to an unmarked squad car. criminal justice expert brian dorow says incidents like this are rare but there are ways to distinguish a police impersonator. "as a rule of thumb... there's a very slim chance that an unmarked squad will ever pull somebody over for a traffic stop." dorow says in the slim chance this does happen a driver should s badge. they should be able to show you an id that matches their badge number. he says a civilian has the right to request an id and the right to call authorities to report suspicion of a possible impersonator. "most departments have a protocol of some kind that when some type of police interaction is going to take place they will have a marked vehicle make initial contact... that's also for officers safety as well." meanwhile residents like cheeks hope this was an isolated incident.

now at 8-30... a look at this morning's top stories. a 40-year-old milwaukee man has been arrested for impersonating a police officer. we're told by investigators the man identified himself as an officer and ordered a driver to pull over. it happened thursday afternoon -- near 17th and west highland avenue. police have yet to say how he was caught. crime, but three suspects are caught red handed. they were arrested after police say they stole thousand of dollars worth of merchandise from the oak creek meijer. authorities say they cut open big box items like vacuums and grills, took those items out and filled them with other merchandise. police say the stolen goods totaled more than $9,000. all three suspects have been charged with retail theft. five people -- now charged in connection to a kenosha

first four week course, a dozen female inmates trained four dogs. in the new course a dozen male inmates will serve as trainers. the inmates teach the dogs to be house-trained and understand basic commands.... like sit, lie down and how to walk on a leash. all skills will improve a dog's chances of being adopted. the inmates also stand to benefit. hammond says: "they come out of it with a piece of paper but it's more, it's life skills and experiences they can carry with them on their next leg of hope is a positive one full of opportunities" the sheriff's office and shelter will soon expand the program to include overnight stays. dogs will remain with the inmates in their cells. hammond says: "when a pet is in a shelter, it's a very stressful artificial environment. they don't know why they're there. it means everything to these pets to get out of that artificial environment" sampson is a new dog. weaver says: "he's loose, he's soft, he's gentle, he has really soft eyes." he is ready for a family. and so is
