>> given the arctic chill, it's the perfect time to test it out. >> no kidding. that is what is making news in america this morning. >> get more later or live and in hd, this is "good morning washington," on your side. >> straight ahead this half- hour, a big day. the region is getting ready for this season's first widespread snowfall. good morning, washington. i am scott thuman. >> thanks for being with us on this thursday. i am pamela brown. alison starling has the day off. traffic and weather every ten minutes. first we want to get to meteorologist adam caskey to talk about the snowfall we are expecting to date. >> let's get to the details of the system we anticipate a later today.

it will be in the depths no event for most of us. most of it will fall during the midday. -- it will be a midday snow event. there's a winter weather advisory starting at 10:00 a.m. in the metro area. some areas of snow are moving through kentucky, west virginia, ohio, n.c., and virginia. around the beltway at around 11:00 a.m. between 7:00 p.m. is when we will have scattered snow showers. that's not for the morning. high temperatures in the upper 20's. right now it is near 20 degrees. 14 in stafford, 22 at reagan national. one-two inches locally. spotsylvania, up to 3 inches.

morning rush hour and the evening rush-hour. you will probably run over some slippery spots on the way home. they have trucks ready to roll. they have retreated the roads. -- pretreated. that through a to northern virginia. they have 400 trucks on standby, ready to get out when they need to. snowplows and that sort of thing. one or two inches. in other areas we could see more. with cold weather and freezing temperatures, the roads are cold. transportation officials are concerned that when the snowfalls, it will stick, and that will make for super- commuters.

>> i was in texas yesterday and it was 75 degrees and then i flew into this. >> one of the few mild spots across the country. mainly to the southwest. but it is cold. 16 in winchester. it's 22 and the district. 16 in frederick. quantico at 16 degrees. the white that you see on the screen is the projected snowfall. the time is on the upper right on the screen. most of between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., we will have scattered snow showers. by 3:00 p.m., most of the region may get light snow. notice as we go towards the evening rush hour, 6:00 p.m., it begins to taper off, especially locally and north of town.

the d.c. region is bracing for the first big snowfall of the season. a winter weather advisory has been issued as we could get at least 1-3 inches of snow. people are stocking up on supplies and roads have been treated. salt trucks we have learned that d.c. mayor elect vincent gray will keep cathy lanier as police chief.

he has reportedly asked kenneth ellerbe to return from florida to lead as the fire chief. some democrats said they will try to make changes to the tax-cut bill. some republicans say that could lead to a compromise -- a compromise with president obama to fall apart. prince george's county looking for a man who shot his girlfriend while she was holding their baby. the suspect is still sending threats to his victim even while on the run from bilal. >> the 26-year-old crawford was shot and left for dead after an argument with the poor or friend. jeffrey easley is still on loose. >> she got shot four times, in the face.

welcome back. a holiday tradition at georgetown hospital gave a tribute to a 13-year-olds who lost his battle with cancer earlier this year. >> children received gifts and a lot more. evenflo her son dalton is not here to give away presents this year, he is here in spirit. he passed away in august after a five-year battle with cancer. after he was diagnosed at age 11, he and his father, a retired fairfax county police officer, went to georgetown university hospital. >> when he was on radiation, he
