good-bye. you see the family checking out without amanda. she was in a private waiting area. and our entire team is covering every angle, from italy, to her hometown of seattle. we'll start with abc's josh elliott just outside rome right now. good morning, josh. >> reporter: that's right, robin. amanda knox's journey home continues at this hour. we're on the outskirts of rome, at leonardo da vinci airport, where at 12:00 local time, amanda and her family were on a flight for london. where they will connect and get the final leg home to seattle. i want to look at the images we saw. curt knox, so tense and so happy to finally have his daughter home. playing with amanda's sisters, as they checked in for the flight. and then, edda mellas, teasing photographers, desperate for a final glimpse of amanda.

arrangements had previously been made to escort amanda directly to the plane. i want to return to the chaos last night after the verdict was read. i had a chance to speak with amanda knox's lawyer, just outside of the courthouse, has throws teemed about. amanda knox has no ill will against italy or italians. a country she loves. and amman do knox today, is happy to leave all of this behind, on her way to freedom, on her way home. robin? george? >> okay, josh. thanks very much. there is so much drama in this case. and "20/20" co-anchor, elizabeth vargas, has covered it from the start. she joins us from perugia this morning. elizabeth? >> reporter: only a story as sensational and as lurid can end in such an away. acquittal on all murder charges. and pandemonium in the streets of perugia. the streets are calm.

and amanda knox is enjoying her first morning. freedom. her first breakfast with her parents, her first walk outside prison walls, in four years. >> both defendants have been acquitted. >> reporter: just 90 minutes after hearing the words she longed for, behind the darkined windows of this black sedan, amanda knox finally left the prison that held her here for four years. she was raced here from court, to finalize paperwork and pack. a member of the parliament greeted her, along with fellow inmates, who were jumping for joy, free, free. she was very tranquil, and very happy, he said. from prison, she is making the long-awaited trip home to seattle. a joyful homecoming. but a challenging one, as well. >> i don't think we'll know the extent of how she's changed until she comes out and reenters normal life. right now, she is a person that she needs to be to survive in

that jail. >> reporter: you have to figure out how to make this as controlled as possible? >> exactly. >> reporter: what do you worry about the most? >> trauma. >> reporter: posttraumatic stress disorder? >> yes. the one thing amanda has asked for is privacy. she doesn't want to face media. or even the thought of we well-wishers at one time, is upsetting to her. >> reporter: an italian judge read the verdict. her 26-year sentence for the murder of meredith kercher, thrown out. amanda's younger sister, deanna, now, a joyful family spokesman. >> we're thankful that amman the's nightmare is over. we suffered for three years for a crime she did not commit. >> reporter: carlo della vedova

has been her lawyer for four years. >> there was a relief from the decision. >> reporter: while there is relief for the knox family, there is anger for the kerchers. >> we will find out what really happened. >> reporter: for amanda, a new life begins today. amanda knox thanks the italians that supported her through the ordeal. there were pockets of support, that grew steadily as the evidence against her began to disintegrate. the first thing her mother says she wants to do is feel the grass, something she hasn't done in the concrete prison for four years. >> no one has covered the case more closely than elizabeth. >> very the very beginning. joining us now is dan abrams and her u.s. attorney, ted simons, in seattle. ted, i saw you before you left. and you were cautiously optimistic before the verdict was read. now, we do know. and you had a chance to talk to amanda last night, after she was

released. what can you tell us about that conversation? >> yesterday was a long day. i was in continuous contact with all of the family in every possible way. and after the verdict, i was able to speak to amanda. it was an amazing moment, an extremely emotional moment. she was incredibly joyful, thankful and ever so grateful. she could not contain her thanks and appreciation, for all of the support and help she's been given everywhere, from her family and around the world. >> and headed back to her hometown of seattle. when do you expect her to arrive? and what's going to happen when she gets home? >> all those -- we know she's in the air. we're very happy about that. i think when she arrives, it's going to be time to reflect and re-evaluate and regroup and spend some -- you know, try to

regain very, very precious last time she's not had with her family. so, we'll wait to see. we expect wonderful things. she's a bright, beautiful, wonderful, young woman. and we're just expecting wonderful things from her. >> taking it moment by moment, as can be expected. and, dan, as we've been saying, this appeals process, was really a retrial because the evidence was able to be re-examined. that is the primary reason why she's free? >> that's right. unlike what would happen here in the united states. here in the united states, in the appellate court, they would evaluate errors of law. here, they retried all of the facts. the prosecution and the defense was appealing. the prosecution wanted a stiffer sentence. the defense in the end won here, which is interesting because now, the prosecution could appeal again. what would that mean? she wouldn't come back? >> the prosecution to appeal, which they've said their going to. in this case, it would be issues of law. in the highest court of italy, can't retry it again.

similar to our system in the sense there would have to be mistakes with regard to the legal process. if someone somehow, the court said there were mistakes made, there ought to be a new proceeding, i think it would be very hard for them to get her back into this country -- back to italy. >> ted, would she go back to italy? you don't want to get ahead of yourself. but that's one of the questions out there this morning. >> i don't think there's a need to get ahead of ourselves. let's be very clear. this is a day to be appreciative. extremely thankful. and there's a clear recognition by this verdict, an announcement, an unmistakable announcement to the world, in a amanda knox was previously wrongfully convicted. and she is not responsible for the tragic loss of meredith kercher. that's what we have to remain mindful of. and we must also remain mindful of the loss of meredith herself.

and that's not lost on the family of amanda. >> and rudy guede, was convicted of murder. but they're saying he may claim that the evidence against him was tainted. >> rude guede, every piece of physical evidence was against him. his dna was on her bra. an her sweatshirt. an his -- in her most private parts. he admitted to being there. there's no doubt that every piece of evidence -- >> but as a legal matter. >> that he was guilty. >> that's true. but as a legal matter, rudy guede's lawyer says he will use this to overturn his own conviction. he's going to have a much harder time. it's a much different case. but no doubt they see an opportunity now, to say what wait a second. what about us? >> dan, thank you very much. ted, thank you. i kn you've been wearing that bracelet that you started, free amanda. an it has now happened. >> that's right. >> thank you very much. you take care. we'll talk to you soon. >> okay, robin.

thanks. now, to politics. your voice, your vote. and a brand-new abc news/"washington post" poll, that has startling results, especially for gop front-runner, rick perry. he's dropped like a rock into a second-place tie with herman cain. it's a tough poll for president obama, too. his approval rating down to 42%. the lowest of his presidency. and for the first time, a majority of americans believe he will be a one-term president. so, when i sat down with the president at the white house yesterday to kick off the new partnership between abc news and yahoo! that's where i began. are you the underdog now? >> absolutely. the -- because given the economy, there's no doubt that, you know, whatever happens on your watch, you've got -- >> you embrace that pretty quickly. >> i don't mind. i'm used to being an underdog. and i think that at the end of the day, though, what people are going to say is, who's got a vision for the future that can actually help ordinary families

recapture that american dream? >> so many people simply don't think they're better off than they were four years ago. >> right. >> how do you convince them they are? >> i don't think they're better off four years ago. they're not better off than they were before lehman's collapsed, before the financial crisis, before this extraordinary recession we're going through. what we've seen is, we've been able to make steady progress to stabilize the economy. but the unemployment rate is still way too high. and that's high it's so critical for us to make sure that we're taking every action that we can take to put people back to work. >> reporter: more than 40,000 questions came in online for the president. most expressing anxiety and anger about the economy. including outrage at bank of america's new $5 debit card fee. vicki minkle wrote, those are the types of things government should get involved in and put a stop to. can you put a stop to that? >> we put a stop through the financial reform act, of them charging fees for credit cards.

>> and the banks are saying that's what caused the new charges. >> what the banks are saying, rather than take a little less of a profit, rather than paying multimillion-dollar bonuses, let's treat our customers right. this is exactly why we need a consumer finance protection bureau that we set up. >> can you stop this service charge? >> you can stop it because if you say to the banks, you don't have some inherent right just to you know get a certain amount of profit if your customers are being mistreated. and my hope is, you're going to see a bunch of the banks who say to themselves, you know what? this is actually not good business practice. >> one of your potential opponents, governor chris christie, very tough speech at the reagan library last week. he said you didn't have the courage to lead. and he asked -- >> what happened to state

girl. foxy knoxy. there was this lifetime movie. >> foxy knoxy, swept into court. >> under the angel face, she's capable of anything. >> reporter: but the 20-year-old who came to perugia to study italian is gone. and the amanda is now older, and changed. >> the first thing to figure out what the four years have done to her emotionally. where's the trauma going to slide in and so forth? and that's the part i'm worried about. >> reporter: experts say knox will need the support of her family, and privacy, to rediscover the person she once was. >> she's going to have to slowly adjust. she'll probably have symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. nightmares. she'll be jumpy. this is a time for her friends to pull around her. for her family to pull around her. lots of tlc. lots of time. lots of patience. and lots of love. >> reporter: as she looks for a way back to some form of normal, something amanda's sister talked about with abc's elizabeth

vargas. >> i've already got plans for me and amanda. when we get back. >> what are your plans? >> i have the canvases. i don't know when the last time amanda painted. we're going down to lincoln park, which is right by our house. we're going to sit in the middle of the dark and paint. >> reporter: once home, amanda knox will be surrounded by -- fought nearly four years for her release. but after spending those four years in the harsh world spotlight, her transition back to a normal life will be difficult, indeed. as such, her family has asked for privacy, as she attempts to move forward. george? >> josh, thanks. let's get more on the transition, public and privately, from two experts. jana taylor, and howard bragman. janet, let me begin with you. the word keeps being used. you heard it from chuck knox,

many times. trauma. >> she was 20 years old when she went into a prison. she has to think about what she suffered. and suffered is a word they use a lot. let her deal with the trauma sha she suffers. >> how does she talk about it now? >> to ask her what her experience is. not everyone that suffers has posttraumatic stress disorder. just allow her the time to talk about ha she experienced and what she has felt. and then, she can move on. >> this is the kind of thing where you push her to talk about it? you set up structured conversations? or let her come to you? >> a combination of both. she will talk with her family. her family's been with her the whole way. but given the opportunity to talk to a professional, so she can leave it in the office with the professional. and they can analyze and work with her. >> and the family makes all the difference. i've been reading some of the stories. you don't know how to weigh them about casey anthony, who is estranged from her family. and seems to be having a difficult time with reentry. >> reentry from prison, people who do the best are those whose

families have been with them the whole time. and hers has. she can lean on them through this difficult transition. >> howard, how about the public side? there's going to be so many people clamoring for amanda to tell her story. if she were to bring you in to talk about how she should do it, what would you tell her? >> a couple of things. i would defer to an expert, like dr. taylor. and get her psychiatric issues in line. >> first things first. >> because the media says we need to talk to you now, that's not her first priority. her first priority, is her psychological health. she says she wants to go on with her life. but she's not going to go on with her life unless and until, she gets rid of the pent-up energy that the media wants to talk to her. this is america. she's been acquitted by the court of law. we like somebody to look in the camera and say, i didn't do it. >> you rule out the possibility.

i think you're right. but you rule out the possibility that she could go home and live a private life? >> it's not going to happen. it's not realistic. there's hundreds of media people just waiting for her. and i've seen it many times in my life. she can't just go on. and the ability to go on with her life, she wants to look people in the eye and say, i didn't do it. we like that as the american people. and that's going to help her go on with her life, if people leave her. >> telling her story would actually help from a therapeutic perspective. >> at some point. i would run from the media first. first, she has to look within herself and her family, to decide which story it is she wants to tell. and she should not feel pressured to go and give big interviews right away. this is going to take time. and only she can dictate how long that time will take. for four years, everything she had has been structured. now, she needs to regroup and feel like she has the

psychological freedom to make the decisions she needs to for herself. >> what's the best way to tell her? >> to sit down with one person that you feel comfortable with. somebody that she feels will give her a fair hearing. that will be everyosympathetic. >> she has to decide ha she wants to do with her life. >> exactly. >> i would go back to school. let her finish school. let her paint with her sister. try to establish some normal behavior. as norm as as that can be. just to regain the four years that she lost. >> okay. janet taylor, howard bragman, thanks very much. let's get some wther from sam. hey, sam. >> good morning, george. the heat's on. but you'll never guess where. look at the dakotas. those are red spots there. those are 90s. 93 and 94 degrees in north and south dakota.

l.a. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, robin. a tough day for the defense inside and outside of court. abc news has learned from investigators, people close to the investigation, all of the propofol bottles, all of the fingerprints on the propofol bottles have been accounted for. and none of them belongs to michael jackson. that, perhaps, is a crippling blow to the main theory of the defense, who say it was jackson who administered that fatal blow to himself. and jackson is portrayed as a caring but dangerous physician. now, we may know a little more about why conrad murray is seen pacing through the halls of ucla medical center, as his one and only patient, michael jackson, lay lifeless in this trauma room closeby. >> when you talked to him, he was devastated. >> yes, sir. >> he told you, please, doctor. do not give up? is that correct? >> do not give up easily. try to save his life.

>> thao nguyen is a heart specialist at ucla. she is called down to the emergency room stat. a v.i.p. patient was dying. >> time was not on mr. jackson's side. >> reporter: and the e.r. doctor is convinced there's little chance of saving him. >> dr. jackson died long before he became a patient that i was personally responsible for. >> reporter: but dr. murray would not accept that diagnosis. so, dr. nguyen strikes a deal. she would try one more extraordinary measure on a man who had not been breathing for more than an hour, if dr. murray would agree to let him go if it did not work. the procedure, called the balloon pump, inserts a device in the artery, and into the heart, for direct stimulation. >> if this were to fail, everybody agreed to call the time of death, including dr. murray. it's not a case of too little too late. it seems like a case of too late. >> reporter: like the e.r. doctor before her, the heart
