things should warm up as the morning moves along. meteorologist tim women williams tim williams has the details in his first warning forecast. good morning, welcome to eyewitness news this saturday. i'm gigi barnett. i'm tim williams. temperatures are in the 30s area wide. good morning to. you good morning. >> it is chilly today. >> cool. >> it will warm up today, as you mentioned. our normal high today is 55 degrees. we'll get into the range of about 60. how about that? clear skies, but we will see a bit of a wind from the west-northwest, it's going to be a breezy day. i have to preface everything by saying that. the temperatures will be somewhat above normal.

so with that said, your forecast starts off with temperatures in the 30s. we'll be in the 40s very quickly as soon as the sun comes up. we'll be up around 58 degrees, that's our forecast high for today. overnight lows in the 40s. we'll have your complete forecast in a few moments. thank you, at this. first here's what people are talking about this morning. an emotional dane court as a federal officer's trial for shooting and killing a dog at a anne arundel county dog park. the judge says the shooting was wrong but the officer is getting off without any jail time. >> reporter: courthouse security tried to push wjz cameras away from federal police officer keith shepard, protecting him from questions moments after he was given probation for shooting bear bear. there was evidence to convict shepard on two misdemeanor charges, animal cruelty and firing a weapon too close to homes. shepard's record will be cleared once he completes probation.

he has to do community service and pay a $500 fine. >> this type of situation was unusual, it would never happen again, that's why he benefited him with probation. >> reporter: the shooting and last august. shepard was there off duty with his wife and dog and claims bear bear tried to attack them so he fired his personal handgun at bear bear and called 911. >> i'm an off duty federal police officer. i just discharged my weapon to a dog that was attacking my dog. >> it was an excessive use of force under the circumstances. >> reporter: bear bear's owner ryan rettaliatas refused to speak about the verdict, but friends were angry. >> it comes to a dog park, where people are, with a load gun, shoots an innocent dog and again the dogs loss. >> reporter: the case generated passionate emotions, thousands joined a facebook group supporting bear bear. his owners have adopted two

more huskies. shepard testified in his own defense. effaced a maximum of nine months behind bars. reporting from district court in anne arundel county, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. shepard moved from the neighborhood after his attorney says he received threats. he can not appeal the judge's decision. the sister in law of a towson gas station owner is found guilty of supplying the gun that killed him. william porter was shot in the head in what turned out to be a $9000 murder for hire plot. jurors found 52-year-old susan adetasm a guilty of gun and conspiracy charges. her sister was the mastermind prosecutors say. baltimore police are searching for the person who stabbed a student on the grounds of douglas high school. investigators say a 16-year-old was arguing with a group of other teens when someone stabbed him in the back. he is in serious condition at the hospital. a full body scan or a full body pat down? if you are going to fly, you'll

have to do it. but pilots don't. and that has some passengers protesting. as kelly mcpherson explains, others say the security checks are absolutely necessary. >> reporter: good morning, it's a debate between security and comfort, just as the holiday travel season is kicking off. travelers are protesting heightened security measures of complete body scans and personal pat downs after a san diego traveler posted this on youtube. >> i don't understand how a sexual assault is a condition of my flying. >> reporter: we met one traveler who had the pat down at new york's laguardia airport and thinks it's a good idea. >> went through it thoroughly as well. he told you everything he was going to d a little uncomfortable at times. >> reporter: two service men on their way to iraq disagree. >> think about it, who would want somebody's hands in their crotch area, i wouldn't. >> if they can do a body scan, then that would be good. >> reporter: on friday the tsa

announced that pilots with two forms of id will not be scanned. >> honestly i don't mind as long as i'm safe on my flight and in the airport. >> reporter: a baltimore police officer who lost his brother in 9/11 is weighing in. >> our safety comes first. you don't want to be in my position. you don't want to one day something tragic happening and your loved one was there. and finding there was a way to prevents it. this is a small step we need to take to prevent the bigger tragedy. >> the bottom line is ensuring that everybody that gets on every flight can be assured with high confidence that everybody else on that flight has been properly screened. >> reporter: the government has announced airports can select to not use tsa workers and instead higher private security contractors. bwi will not be doing that. reporting live kelly mcpherson, wjz eyewitness news. thank you. if you are flying for the holidays you may want to allow extra time. a protest called national opt out day is gaining momentum on the internet. it urges passengers to refuse

full body scans and choose the more time consuming pat downs instead. that could back up security lines next wednesday on what is already the busiest travel day of the year. if you are driving to a holiday destination this thanksgiving, you need to pack your patience. the traffic could be worse than last year. mta expects 3 million drivers will hit the road, that's 2% more than this time last year. wednesday will likely be the worst of it and major construction projects on the interstate will not help matters anymore. the best time to travel should be before 6:00 in the morning or after 10:00 at night. facebook is giving ticketmaster competition in one of the first businesses to use a new feature on the site is here in baltimore. kai jackson has more on how facebook is taking over ticket sales. >> reporter: they lined up at the door, showed their tickets to staff, then got stamps to prove they paid. the star attraction tonight is

an eclectic band called. >> brother fish. >> reporter: facebook is a star as far as the stadium is concerned, the popular concert venue started selling tickets through its facebook page. >> does that appeal to you? >> it does if you don't have a fee. it's all about the fees. ticketmaster gets their money. facebook will want their money. >> marketing online is a rapidly evolving landscape. if you don't keep up with what's popular you'll fall behind. >> reporter: the fact that the venue is utilizing facebook not just as a friend page, but as a tool to cell tickets shows the power of a social network. you don't think else a bad idea? >> no not at all, because that's where the majority of the people are at right now. give or take if it's good or bad. >> reporter: facebook is not selling the tickets on line, but more or less acting as a link, call it one stop shopping. >> it's an application for facebook that streamlines all

of our selling information into that application and makes it accessible on facebook. >> i think its pretty cool, actually. it's a way to get tickets out. >> reporter: the venue plans to push sales through facebook for black friday. i'm kai jackson reporting back to you. thank you, kai. customers can still purchase tickets through the ram's head live. the maryland terrapins are looking to push back at madison square garden. the terps taking on nationally ranked illinois of the big ten. illinois led most of the way, but freshman terrell stogman kept the terps in the game. but illinois was too strong. maryland falls short 80-76. in football the ravens had one last practice before they hit the road to north carolina today taking on the carolina

congratulation our director ori hicks who won the baby pool. >> why? >> that's brian. no. ori, yes. >> all right. he guessed the day that little drew would be born. all right. but brian -- no, congratulations brian. we are looking at a pretty nice weekend, any weekend that we don't have snow and below freezing temperatures this late in the year is a nice weekend. we can't really complain. so what we're looking at is another day with temperatures in the 607s, rain in the mid to upper 50s to about 60. we'll be breezy today. but it will be really nice. so this is going to be a nice stretch heading into thanksgiving. thanksgiving could be a little damp early on. we'll talk about that here in a second. 38 at bwi marshal, 32 the dew point. relative humidity 78%. winds from the west southwest at 6 miles per hour.

30.18 is the barometer. northeast maryland 37, everyone somewhere in the upper 30s to 40-degree range. 40 in d-c. the warmer temperatures are closer to the water where the temperatures are still in the 50s. 45 in east on, 45 in pax river. and 48 on the shore where the winds are 12 miles per hour coming in from the southwest. again, that bit of a southwest flow will usher in mild air today. and what we will see, two things going on, there is a very quick moving and very weak clipper system moving across quebec and to the east across canada. that is close enough that it will help the winds kick up today. it will not be as windy as the storms that rolled through early in the week, but it will be a breezy day. we have another disturbance in the midwest, that will be getting its act together and heading in our direction before thanksgiving and thanksgiving

day. your travel on wednesday could be damp. early on thanksgiving day we could see showers before things clear out. temperatures are mild throughout. this is the rain that i was talking about. we will see temperatures above average today right around 50 tomorrow. and then we'll start to warm up heading into the beginning of the week. sunrise 6:55, sunset 4:48. small craft advisory until noon. there is a west wind on the bay ten to 15 knots gusting to 20. next high tide at fort mchenry 4:28. mostly sunny and very pleasant. temperatures overnight around 34. a moonlit sky and then for tomorrow going back to 51. a bit cooler than today, but with sunshine and patchy clouds. 62 on monday, clouds will increase by tuesday and there could be scattered showers, but 62 and 65. not too bad. and then we cool down. unfortunately, it will be chilly on black friday. so heading into wednesday, we could see scattered showers. 51 on thursday, and black friday follows that same trend.

welcome back to eyewitness news saturday morning on this 20th day of november, 2010. it is just about, oh, 18 minutes after the hour. we're looking at a pretty nice day starting out. it will be pretty warmed to november speaking that is. 58 degrees, the average is 55 for this day. we start to lose 1 degree each day over the next few. so we're going to get cooler,

58. here's the forecast, mostly sunny and pleasant. overnight lows 34, a clear night, moonlit sky. tomorrow sunshine and patchy clouds. we will start to warm up with temperatures around 62 on monday, 65 on tuesday, 52 on your travel day for thanksgiving and then 51 on thanksgiving day. could be an early shower, but things clear out through the day. we'll have more of your updated forecast shortly. thank you, tip. first back to other stories people are talking about. a mysterious powder and threatening note are sent to cbs studios in california. the fbi wants to know who is behind it. federal agents are examining the note and powder that were sent to the production office of dancing with the stars which is staged at cbs studios. investigators say tests revealed the substance is only that will cum powder and doesn't pose a threat. investigators are learning more about a fighter jet crash in alaska. preliminary evidence show thes the plane's pilot was not able

to eject and died in tuesday's crash. recovery efforts are expected to last several weeks because the team is dealing with the rural location and the temperatures that drop to 20 below at night. some not so sweet news this morning for fans of the food network's baltimore based reality show ace of cakes. our media partners at the baltimore sun report the hit show will end after it's tenth season. the show follows duff gold & and the crew. the food network says it's looking into other show concepts for goldman. the new season begins in january. the weather has not been too rough in maryland but in montana, the snow it is falling. it's causing headaches for people living there. snowy and icy roads caused several accidents on i90. no one has been seriously hurt, but the area is expected to get a foot of snow for thanksgiving. i heard of white christmas, do we get white thanksgiving? >> not usually.

full body scans in lieu of pat downs which take more time. some air travelers say the screening is needed. >> i say pat me down and ones that don't want to get patted down, don't put them on a plane with me. >> reporter: even if a small number of passengers take part in the protest on the busiest travel day of the year, there could be big disruptions. it's part of a wider controversy involving the new transportation security administration's screening measures that are considered too invasive by some americans. >> if i had to take the choice, i'd opt for the pat down. it's bad to worse. >> reporter: the tsa bowed to pressure from pilots allowing them to pass security if they show two photo ids, one from the government. the tsa is trying to reassure flierers that the new screening methods are a necessary evil. >> we're trying to address the latest intelligence about the threats we have and the privacy

issue people are concerned about. >> reporter: according to the tsa, 99% of page verse not refused the full body scan. and a recent cbs pole shows four out of five people don't mind the extra screening. sandra hughes, wjz eyewitness news. >> and those enhanced security measures are already in use at bwi thurgood marshall airport. wjz talked with some passengers who say they may not like it, but they believe the extra security is necessary. >> very thoroughly as well. so i mean, he told you what he was going to do. a little uncomfortable at times. >> i don't mind as long as i'm safe on my flight and the airport. >> tsa officials say the new security is paying off. they have seized more than 100 illegal or prohibited items before making it on to planes. not everyone will have to deal with airport security to make it home in time for their thanksgiving. millions of people will drive to their holiday destination and weijia jiang has a closer look at the numbers.

>> reporter: those who are braving the roads this thanksgiving might want to pack more than just a bag. some patience could go a long way. >> it's busy, yeah. it's jammed up, most of them. >> reporter: the maryland transportation authority predicts nearly 3 million drivers plan to hit maryland roads this thanksgiving a that's a 2% increase in traffic compared to last year. >> i see a lot of craziness, i am patience, people doing unsmart things because they're frustrated. they zip in the lanes. they tailgate. >> reporter: on tuesday november 23rd, through sunday november 28th, mta expects nearly 800,000 vehicles to travel the fort mchenry tunnel, more than 700,000 on interstate 95 and nearly a million on the state's tunnels and bridges. researchers say wednesday will likely be the busiest travel day. >> if you can travel very early before 6:00 a.m. if you can travel after ten or

11:00 p.m. in the evening on tuesday or wednesday, those would be advisable. >> reporter: authorities say one reason why traffic will be so bad along interstate 95 all next week is that the major construction project going on will continue despite the holiday. >> at the delaware toll plaza in newark, on i-95, and so with that additional construction going on, there will likely be additional delays, additional backups. >> traffic jams up, basically it's slow going through the tunnel. >> reporter: maryland leaders hope new state laws will make the ride a safer one. texting and using handheld cell phones behind the wheel is illegal. drivers should expect more police patrols out to enforce all the rules to keep the busy roads safe. highway officials suggest you pay close attention to large electronic signs on the roads for the latest traffic and detour information. reporting in baltimore county weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. thank you. wjz is always on, for a link to

the most up to date traffic holiday travel information log on to our website that's wjz.com and click on traffic. a local man pays a terrible price after he tries to fix his broken car on a busy highway. police say another vehicle struck the man on the bw parkway county yesterday morning. it happened as the victim was pushing his car on the road. he died at the scene. police say stranded drivers should always ask officers for help first. >> when people are disabled on the highway, they should stay in their vehicles, notify the police or tow truck to come to assist them. we can make sure that the scene is a lot safer for you if you need to make repairs to your vehicle. >> no word if there will be any charges in the accident. an emotional day in anne arundel county as a federal officer learns his fate for shooting a beloved family pet. officer keith shepard rushed out of court shortly after being convicted of animal cruelty and weapons charges. a judge sentenced him to probation. shepard shot and killed a

siberian husky known as bear bear in a dog park in august. dog lovers outside the court say shepard got off easy. >> he comes to a dog park, where people are, with a loaded gun. shoots an innocent dog, and again the dogs loss. >> shepard faces a maximum of nine months in jail for the two misdemeanor convictions. he'll also pay a $500 fine. a morgan state football player is facing serious charges accused of assaulting a female student on campus. police say it happened on campus outside the student center and cafeteria. what started out as a friendly group conversation turned ugly when the victim made disparaging remarks about the player. the player is in police custody. the cleanup continues in northeast baltimore and baltimore county after wednesday's destructive tornado. residents continue to pack up whatever they can from dozens of homes that are now unfit to live in. weather experts say it took the

teased her about her weight and hair and she suffered with low self-esteem. >> i used to cry every night, every night photographer years just because i didn't have that confidence. >> reporter: using her mother as a role model cami gained confidence and just graduated from winston churchill high school. at 17 years old she's heading off to the university of alabama, then on to medical school. as the oldest of five girls, cami is paving the way for her sisters. >> i'm like the guinea pig for anything that could happen, so for me it's like my mom is watching me go through high school and going to college and my sisters are going to be going through the same thing. i have to do it first. so i'm the one who gets in the most trouble and everything. >> reporter: what do you think are some of the biggest challenges that teens your age face? >> high school is a crazy time. and you just really have to just remain focused. >> reporter: how can you use your story of your path too inspire others? >> i do a lot of speaking appearances with young girls in the inner city and all types of places and i talk to them

from questions moments after he was given probation for shooting bear bear. . the judge said there was evidence to convict shepard on two misdemeanor charges, animal cruelty and firing a weapon too close to homes. shepard's record will be cleared once he completes probation. he has to do community service and pay a $500 fine. >> shepard's attorney on the judge's decision. >> this type of situation was unusual, it would never happen again, that's why he benefited him with probation. >> reporter: the shooting happened last august. shepard was there off duty with his wife and dog and claims bear bear tried to attack them so he fired his personal handgun at bear bear and called 911. >> i'm an off duty federal police officer. i just discharged my weapon to a dog that was attacking my dog. >> it was an excessive use of force under the circumstances. >> reporter: bear bear's owner ryan rettaliatas refused to speak about the verdict, but

friends were angry. believing shepard got off easy with no jail time. >> it comes to a dog park, where people are, with a load gun, shoots an innocent dog and again the dogs loss. >> reporter: the case generated passionate emotions, thousands joined a facebook group supporting bear bear. his owners have adopted two more huskies. shepard testified in his own defense. he faced a maximum of nine months behind bars. reporting from district court in anne arundel county, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. shepard moved from the neighborhood after his attorney says he received threats. he can not appeal the judge's decision the sister-in-law of a towson gas station owner is found guilty of supplying the gun that killed him. william porter was shot in the head in what turned out to be a $9000 murder for hire plot. jurors found 52-year-old susan data guilty of gun and conspiracy charges. prosecutors say her sister

carla who was porter's wife was the mastermind. a total of six people are accused in the plot. baltimore police are searching for the person who stabbed a student on the grounds of douglas high school. investigators say a 16-year-old was arguing with a group of other teens when someone stabbed him in the back. he is in serious condition at the hospital. a full body scan or a full body pat down? if you are going to fly, you'll have to do it. but pilots don't. and that has some passengers protesting. as kelly mcpherson explains, others say the security checks are absolutely necessary. >> good morning. it's a debate between security and comfort. just as the holiday travel season is kicking off. >> travelers are protesting heightened security measures of complete body scans, and personal pat downs after a san diego traveler posted this on youtube >> i don't understand how a sexual assault is a condition of my flying. >> reporter: we met one traveler who had the pat down at new york's laguardia airport and thinks it's a good idea.

not use tsa workers and instead higher private security contractors. bwi will not be doing that. reporting live kelly mcpherson, wjz eyewitness news. thank you. if you are flying for the holidays you may want to allow extra time. a protest called national opt out day is gaining momentum on the internet. it urges passengers to refuse full body scans and choose the more time consuming pat downs instead. that could back up security lines next wednesday on what is already the busiest travel day of the year. if you are driving to a holiday destination this thanksgiving, you need to pack your patience. the traffic could be worse than last year. mta expects 3 million drivers will hit the road, that's 2% more than this time last year. wednesday will likely be the worst of it and major construction projects on the interstate will not help matters anymore. the best time to travel should be before 6:00 in the morning or after 10:00 at night.

talks exclusively about what he was thinking when he jumped on the tracks. >> reporter: good morning, he is modest about his actions, he says don't call him a hero he prefers the term good samaritan. a death defying rescue caught on tape. a man suffers a seizure, then falls on to the tracks at a washington, d.c. metro stop. retired u.s. marine dimas pinzan jumps into danger and saves the man's life. >> what was going through your mind? the thought was get him to safety, i jumped off the platform on to the tracks. >> he said he had no idea when the next train would come through the arlington stop. >> was there ever a moment of hesitation? >> once i realized that was not responsive i just said the hell with it, and i grabbed his arm, gave him a bear hug, got his arms on to the platform and two gentlemen that were up there helped, helped me get him on the platform to safety.

moments. thank you, tim. first here's what people are talking about. as millions of people prepare to travel for the upcoming holiday season, increased airport security is sparking controversy nationwide. as sandra hughes reports for wjz, even lawmakers on capitol hill are debating whether the policies go too far. >> reporter: the holiday travel season gets underway this weekend could bring more delays than usual. a protest called national opt out day is gaining ground on the internet. it urges passengers to refuse full body scans in lieu of pat downs which take more time. some air travelers say the screening is needed. >> i say pat me down and ones that don't want to get patted down, don't put them on a plane with me. >> reporter: even if a small number of passengers take part in the protest on the busiest travel day of the year, there could be big disruptions. it's part of a wider controversy involving the new transportation security administration's screening measures that are considered too invasive by some americans. >> if i had to take the choice, i'd opt for the pat down.

i don't want anybody touching me either. it's kind of going bad to worse. >> reporter: the tsa bowed to pressure from pilots allowing them to pass security if they show two photo ids, one from the government. the tsa is trying to reassure flyers that the new screening methods are a necessary evil. >> we're trying to address the latest intelligence about the threats we have and the privacy issue people are concerned about. >> reporter: according to the tsa, 99% of passengers have not refused the full body scan. and a recent cbs pole shows four out of five people don't mind the extra screening. sandra hughes, wjz eyewitness news. >> and those enhanced security measures are already in use at bwi thurgood marshall airport. wjz talked with some passengers who say they may not like it, but they believe the extra security is necessary. >> very thoroughly as well. so i mean, he told you what he was going to do. a little uncomfortable at times.

>> i don't mind as long as i'm safe on my flight and the airport. >> tsa officials say the new security is paying off. they have seized more than 100 illegal or prohibited items before making it on to planes. pack your patience if you're traveling on the grounds. mta expects 3 million driver also hit the roads, that's 2% more than last year. wednesday will likely be the worst of it. major construction projects on the interstates will not help matters even more. >> at the delaware toll plaza in newark, on i-95, and so with that additional construction going on, there will likely be additional delays, additional backups. >> and mta says if drivers can, they should try to travel before 6:00 in the morning or after 10:00 at night. >> an emotional day in anne

arundel county where an officer learns his fate. keith shepard rushed out of court after being convicted of animal cruelty and weapons charges. he was sentenced to probation. he shot bear bear in a dog park in august. he will pay a $500 fine. a morgan state football player is facing serious charges accused of assaulting a female student on campus. police say it happened on campus outside the student center and cafeteria. what started out as a friendly group conversation turned ugly when the victim made disparaging remarks about the player. the player is in police custody. just days after a pregnant maryland woman moves to the west coast she's kill by a woman she met online. that woman wanted her unborn child. mike hellgren explains that the victim's father has some serious warnings for women who are too

trusting. >> reporter: just looking at that girl, i mean, it was like looking at evil. >> reporter: korena roberts changed kevin snively's life forever, the moment she murdered his daughter heather who was eight months pregnant. roberts lured heather to her home, beat her and then used a razor to cut heather's newborn son from her womb. >> it was the worst thing you could ever think of in your life. >> reporter: in his first one on one interview snively reveals how the advice crime tore his life apart. he's living a nightmare. >> it was terrible. instead of celebrating the first christmas this year, you know, we were advicing them, you know. -- missing them and it was tough. >> his daughter was a trusting young woman, never met a stranger. this home video provides a rare glimpse of heather as he remembers her, innocent, outgoing. she saw the best in everyone. he says his little girl was excited about the birth of her

own child. she had named him john steve came back from the doctor, sent the picture to everybody. >> reporter: he believes heather's trusting nature led to her death. days after moving from maryland to oregon, heather began looking for items for her baby on the internet. that's where she met korena roberts on craig's list who offered to give her baby clothes for free. heather never suspected she wanted to take her baby. she never knew that roberts was faking a pregnancy of her own and had tried to lure other pregnant women to her home in the days before the murder. >> she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. >> reporter: roberts cut out heather's baby, then wrapped her bloody body in carpet and shoved her in a crawl space. >> i believe that she should die. she may not get a good night's sleep the rest of her life. she's got a tough road ahead of her. >> to this day heather's dad cannot shake the emotional pain. >> i can't believe that somebody could do something like this. especially to a wonderful girl like my daughter. she had everything to live for.

>> reporter: for what she did to heather roberts will spend the rest of her life in prison. >> i hope i've forgiven her, it's almost impossible, really. >> reporter: in edgewater , mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. this type of crime has happened to four other women around the country. earlier this month in prince county a judge sentenced a woman there to 25 years in prison for attempting to do the same thing. the cleanup continues in northeast baltimore and baltimore county after wednesday's destructive tornado. residents continue to pack up whatever they can from dozens of home that is are unfit to live in. weather experts say it took the tornado a matter of seconds to destroy monies of homes before the holiday season. victims say suddenly having to move is difficult. far >> there is a lot of things moving needs to be done. a lot of people ain't got a lot
