control laws. as there were demonstrations outside a gun shop outside washington dc. >> to allow these kind of gun that is have no other murder than to murder, slaughter innocent people and children is insane. >> fear of new gun control laws has made the weapons one of the hottest selling items this christmas. >> definitely stock up and buy things i can't get in the future. 2 weeks ago you could have bought one gun for $1,400 and now it's $2,500. >> the debate over gun control is just as heated here on capitol hill. the nra says it will fight any new restrictions. >> what every mom and dad want when they drop their kid off at school in january is if we have a police officer in that school. >> the reaction to that plan was mixed among the parents we spoke with. >> i think any effort to protect our children is worth it. >> no, we do not want people
with guns in our school. >> senator diane plans to present a bill banning assault weapons this january. there was a ban in place from 1994 to 2004. >> it hasn't worked. columbine occur ed red. >> there was also an armed guard at columbine. >> according to an analysis from the agency, nra's proposal to put a police officer in every school would mean 1 out of 7 officers would be taken off the streets on school days. the other big issue on capitol hill the fiscal cliff. president obama and congress are are home -- are home now for christmas. automatic tax hikes and spending cuts will kick in january 1st. democrats and republicans insist they are still committed to reaching a deal with the house speaker vowing to return to washington the day after christmas.
more than 1,000 people attend the memorial service for the late hawaii senator daniel enoway. he was the first japanese american elected to congress. he spent 50 years in washington serving the people of hawaii. he died last week. he was 8 8. this morning an investigation is underway after a baltimore county police officer opens fire, killing a man who they say was pointing a knife at him. mike schuh is live with more on what happened. good morning, mike. >> reporter: good morning. county police say that their officer stopped a man behind this gas station and what happened next is up for investigation. >> the officer on routine patrol passes this shell station around 3:45 in the morning. behind the building a suspicious man. police say when the officer asked the man to
come out he pulled a knife. >> the officer did attempt to use a tauzer -- a taser but it was ineffective. the man continued at the officer still has the knife and refused repeated commands to drop the knife. >> fearing for his safety the officer shot the man in the chest. 36-year-old gregory stegall dies at the scene. >> you have to be crazy to go towards a cop with something. >> robert mills moved his family out of the city to avoid crime. now he realizes no place is immune so violence. >> life goes on, you have to come out and do what you have to do. you do what you can to stay safe. >> reporter: now some neighbors tell eyewitness news that there was suspicious man in this area for the past week or so. they don't know if it was the same man. >> police have not identified the officer involved in that shooting. he's on routine
administrative leave pending the out come of the investigation. a former oriole is discovered dead inside his florida home. police in jacksonville say ryan freo died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. he played 9 games for the oriels in 2009. he retired from pro ball in 2009 and had worked for an organization that helped develop young players. farmers and merchants say good-bye to another season of the farmers market. tim williams reports on the bittersweet time for buyers and sellers. >> from mistletoe to mushrooms to merry christmas in german. this year's baltimore farmers market and bizarre has left a good taste in the mouths of customers and vendors who are sorry to see it go for now. >> no, i'm not happy about it. i wish there were more of it.

start up again on april 7th. it's an early christmas present for the ravens. they clench the afc north title with a crunching win over the new york giants. here's mark viviano with reaction and highlights. >> good morning. after three troubling defeats in a row all is well with the ravens after a blow out win over the new york giants which clenches another division title for the ravens and secures for them a home playoff game. the ravens office was awesome scoring touchdowns in their first two possessions in the first quarter rolling up more than 500 yards for the game. the defense dominant, containing giants quarterback eli manning and sacking him three times. a 44-13 ravens victory, erasing the doubt that built up over a three game losing streak. >> we go out there and believe who we believe we are.

the future of maryland's horsing racing industry has been decided. it's good news for the racetracks. it's a long term solution for what had a z -- what has been a bitter battle. >> after years of contention debate all sides have come together and agreed on a contract that will allow horse racing to continue here in maryland for the next decade. >> they're off. >> for horse racing fans it's about one thing. >> just the thrill of it. >> that thrill will now continue in maryland until at least the year 202 2. that's thanks to a new agreement approved tuesday. maryland will see a total of 146 live racing days in 2013 and at least 100 days of live racing for the next 9 years after that. >> this was a very significant moment for the racing industry in maryland. you'll remember this a decade from now. >> allen forman says the deal
should give horse men and breeders a stable future and provide strongers purses to compete for. the deal is a win for the maryland jockey club which owns and operates the tracks. the new financial arrangement will allow them to make improvements to their ageing facilities. the agreement ends years of debate between the group over how to save the racing industry. >> there's no more conflict, there's no more animosity and get get down to business. . >> it's a good deal. >> local fans thrilled to hear their horse racing home is safe for the next 10 years. >> these people were hurt. i'm glad they got it. i wish they would double it. >> racing for 2013 is set to begin january 1st. racing will begin at pimlico starting april 4th. >> the 138th running of the

for answers this morning after a body is found floating in the inner harbor. it was found near the world trade center. police aren't released a whole lot of information about who the person is or what may have led to the death. the medical examiner is working to determine a cause of death. officials in prince george's county are trying to figure out what caused a fire at a home that's over 100 years old. it happened on princess garden parkway yesterday. the fire did $50,000 worth of damage to the 110-year-old home. no one was hurt. it took firefighters 10 minutes to get the flames under control. a charity started off super storm sandy is helping to bring a little holiday cheer to a new york community that was one of the hardest hit. marly hall reports from howard beach where hundreds of kids received early christmas gifts. >> a restaurant in howard beach, new york turned into a christmas wonderland for hundreds of kids still without a permanent home after super storm sandy.
>> there was food and finally presents. >> sandy flooded 10-year-old matthew's basement, destroying most of his toys. >> just trying to get them things and it's -- the people who have donated gifts have been awesome. >> joy wong created this gift giving charity after she helped a friend clean up from the storm. >> her son saw us throwing out his toys and was so upset not understand whatting -- understanding what he might have done. >> secret sandra allowed online don't do e -- donors to make sure christmas wasn't long. they enough to fulfill the wishes of thousands of victims. >> we used to race downstairs to go see the presents but now

toyota. jessica, back over to you. this morning's coffee with is with anna post. the satellite interview is furnished by the are you that guy influenza education campaign. >> anna doctor susanne welcome to the eyewitness news morning edition. it's good to have you with us this morning. >> nice to see you. sgrsz this -- >> this is such a fascinating topic. how do you be social not only during flu season but it's becoming a year round thing. witness a howie man dell who will have no body contact shaking hands hugging kissing with anybody. that's one extreme. then there are others. let's talk about this for a second. is it changes the way we -- is it changing the way we interact? >> flu has been evolving in
recent years. flu is showing up early this morning. as you said it's always good habits to be in whether it's washing your hands regularly or could having into your elbow or sneezing boo a e -- into a tissue and throwing it away. some people might want to go to that extreme of never ever shaking hand. when you're not sick and the other person seems healthy that's okay so long as you are practicing good hand washing on a regular basis. if you see somebody coming at you and know that they don't looking so well, you can throw up your hands and say excuse me for not shaking hands, but it's great to see you. >> i was actually getting ready to go to that. let's say that -- for instance, i was on an airplane a couple weeks ago. i noticed the person was only a couple rows in front of me had blown their nose.
they didn't appear sick. they evacuated the nostrils. when we got up to get off the plane this person recognized me and went to shake hands. i kind of deferred it a little bit . i said i just could -- coughed into my hand give me an elbow bump brother. what is the way to get out of that situation? >> since you were traveling and it wasn't a business meeting where it's expected, i think that's just fine. you could always do the same thing i just talked about forgive me for not shaking hands great to see you. if the handshake just happens because it's instinctive go and wash up for a good 20 seconds at least or use some alcohol based hand santtizer sanitizer. >> a question about hand sanitizer. i see a lot of people that should be washing their hands who take a couple
squirts of that and think that is is -- is doing the same thing. is is it? >> there's rare circumstances. however you wash your hands do it. there's good equivalence between the traditional hand wash ing and use of the sanitizer. for the most part, it's pretty much the same. that is part of the cdc's take three flu prevepgs as well. hand wash e -- flu prevention as well. hand washing takes different approach. get times to get vak db vaccination. take prescription antiviral medications if your
doctor prescribes it. >> we've we have about a minute and 15 seconds left and i want to get another quick question in here. my daughter goes, don't touch that rail on that escalator, it's the filthiest thing known to mankind. there are all sorts of things that you can say are the single filthiest. i know people who will wipe their hands off and that towel they will use to open the door with. at what point do we take this to an insane level? >> that's why it becomes important to wash your hands frequently. after the routine things you do -- keeping your hands away from your face, your eyes nose, mouth because transmitting from your hands to other places is the way diseases can spread. hand washing is very vital. we have to assume that everything we touch could transmit germs.
