3 today... you can weigh in on a proposal to turn a former enka landfill into a public recreation space. news 13's lauren brigman joins us live outside "the event center at a-b tech" in asheville, where the public hearing will take place. lauren, who is hosting this meeting? the north carolina division of waste management... which oversees the state's brownfields program. the meeting will start at six p-m today. 3 the site being discussed is the 41-acre property on sand hill road, next to the former b-a-s-f plant. before the landfill was closed in 2006, construction waste, fly ash,

stored on the property. a brownfields agreement would allow enka partners l-l-c of asheville to redevlop the property into a park with greenways, ballfields and a concession area. but they must abide by specific requirements. some of those include keeping at least two- feet of soil cover over any waste in the landfill during redevelopment.... and prohibiting the use of groundwater at the site to be used by the public. monitoring systems must also be installed to protect against any possible exposure to previous contamination on the site. but, some have concerns about this redevelopment... that is a big reason why this hearing is taking place. 3 coming up at 5-30, i'll share some examples of former landfills in north carolina, that have been converted to recreation spaces. live in asheville, lauren brigman news 13. 3 3 today, a toddler from haywood county will be laid to rest. a funeral service will be held at noon at garrett funeral home in waynesville for

the family will receive friends starting at 10 a-m. an autopsy revealed that little kyler died from a brain injury, caused by blunt force trauma on sunday. the haywood county sheriff's office is investigating. no charges have been filed in the case. 3 3 3 we have a developing story out of jackson county, detectives are investigating a suspicious death after a man was found shot to death in his home in cashiers. deputies got a 9-1-1 call from the home of timothy norris yesterday morning and arrived to find his body inside. they are not saying who made that call, but no one has been arrested. a family friend says he cannot believe this happened. ((stop)) 3 1452 "this is really a place where you can leave your doors open, your windows open once in awhile you know, and you just don't expect things like that." 1500 the s-b-i is assisting the sheriff's office with the case. 3 3 a yancey county man is accused of abusing a baby. 20 year-old jacob howell is charged with felony child abuse, inflicting serious injury. d-s-s alerted deputies of the child's injuries.

90-thousand-dollars bond. no word on the child's condition. 3 3 3 asheville police are investigating two break-ins that happened a few days apart at the same property. they happened at a home construction site on hazel mill road in west asheville. equipment worth about 700 dollars was stolen. it belonged to "branch creek construction company." the developer put dozens of flyers in area mailboxes to let neighbors know what happened. 3 ya know no evidence left behind. this kind of petty theft is pretty common. so really the only way, as communities, that we can help stop this kind of thing and catch these people is if we look out for each other, reports things to each other and then also to the police3 if you have any information - contact asheville police. 3 3 celebrating a milestone. the new "leash on life" program at the rutherford county prison has been going strong for 10 years. it pairs inmates with dogs to teach them basic commands that help make the pups more adoptable. one of
