3 we're learning more about a gunman near witchita, kansas. police are still looking for a motive. reid binion reports on the shooter who was killed by police, along with three of his victims. 3 (sheriff t. walton /harvey county, ks) "gun fire was exchanged between law enforcement and the shooter and law enforcement shot and killed the shooter."harvey county sheriff "t" walton... ...praising officers for stopping a shooter who gunned down more than a dozen people in kansas thursday(sheriff t. walton /harvey county, ks) "saved a whole lot of lives." officials say it started at around five pm, with a report

vehicle... with a male victim hit in the shoulder.minutes later, another shooting nearby. then, officials say the attacker shot a person in the parking lot of excel industries in hesston, where he worked......then stormed inside and opened fire. (worker) "he was just unloading on everybody. everybody started fleeing out to this back door here." (worker) "i seen a mob of people just start running out saying, 'run, run!' and pop-pop-pop-pop-pop!"police have n n publicly named the perpetrator, but a friend and co-worker identified the deceased shooter as cedrick ford - seen in this facebook photo.(matt jarrell/suspect's friend and co-worker) ""i witnessed him shoot the shots. i mean, that vivid, i can still see it."matt jarrell says it started as a normal day when ford came to work this morning.....until he says ford inexplicably left work.... returning sometime later (matt jarrell, excel worker) "he yelled hey, and then boom, boom, boom and proceeded to go into the building."police don't yet have a motive, but said terrorism wasn't a factor.the man's neighbors - shocked to hear of his involvement in the rampage.(suspect neighbor "he's a real nice guy. i wouldn't think he would done that. he was a good guy from what i know."i'm reid binion, reporting

3 a school district in the mountains tops the list for high school crime rates among all school districts statewide. transylvania county schools reported 37 crimes for the 2014-2015 school year. that may not seem like a lot. but, when you look at the ratio of students to crimes, it is the highest in the state. school officials say part of it has to do with the way schools report crimes. ((stop)) 3 buncombe county schools has the 10th highest crime rate. school officials say they are constantly working to reduce the crime numbers at all grade levels. they say for the current school year, crimes are down. 3 we're doing a much better job with teaching folks about pocket knives which is bringing the weapons charge way down andducating parents and monitoring that and getting the message out to folks, but we're also just seeing a lot of decreases in a lot of other areas.3 other mountain districts in the top ten include asheville city schools and mcdowell county schools.

3 two l-b-g-t groups call on asheville city leaders to pass an anti-discrimination ordnaice like charlotte's. the campaign for sosohern equality and equality n-c want an ordinance to let trangender people to use the public restroom of their choice. many people, including governor pat mccrory, are against it because they are concerned that it would allow men to go into a women's restroom. a longtime transgender activist says she is angered by the governor's opposition. 3 it perpetuates the discrimination and hate it would just be like changing this sign to white only and that kind of political bigotry has got to stop especially from the governor's office. asheville mayor esther manheimer issued a statement saying the city values diversity and equality... and that at their last meeting... council adopted a "vision that reinforces these core values." 3 3 3 in this mornings newsreel... residents across maine got an early-morning wake up call

lightning. this was the scene in portland early yesterday morning. powerful winds knocked over several trees in the city. at one point, more than 11-thousand homes were without power statewide. and the storms boosted temperatures s in portland to a record daily high. 3 fire destroys a multi-million dollar mansion in rhode island. authorities say the fire broke out at the home in newport late yesterday afternoon. when crews arrived at the home, flames were reportedly shooting up to 60 feet in the air. firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in about two hours. but officials say the fight proved difficult due to strong winds. the cause of the fire has not been determined. 3 seaworld employees came to the aid of a baby sea lion that was stranded by heavy surf in san diego yesterday. the animal got stuck just south of a pier, and was too weak to battle the high waves. the sea lion wasn't the only rescue of the day even though officials shut down the pier, one man jumped the fence and plunged into the water. a rescue boat sped out to save him. the man was cited, but not arrested. 3 3 flu deaths drop dramatically across north carolina. only
