the last couple of days. 9:02. back to you. >> every morning with start with our top stories. this is a hard one. the death toll is rising in the south pacific following this week's tsunami. the tsunami was caused by an earthquake tuesday morning. it's so far killed 149 people. meantime the military is transporting medical personnel, food, water, medicine, to samoa as well as american spoil. indonesia hit by another earthquake, the second one in 24 hours. rescuers are pulling out victims from the heavy rubble of buildings knocked over in wednesday's powerful quake that killed at least 529 people. officials there now expect that number to rise. to an abc2 news exclusive -- a woman in northeast baltimore is burned after a fire starts in her home overnight. this fire started around 1:00 this morning. here on sheldon avenue. when the fire department got there they found her out front and badly burned. she was immediately taken to

the bay view burn center. we don't know her condition at this hour. one firefighter suffered a minor burn in his ear. fire officials are still trying to figure out how this started. earlier we reported how two teens saved that woman from the fire. now we're learning the story of being heroes may not be the case. we'll continue to follow this story. we'll update you throughout the day on abc2news.com. another story exclusive to abc2 news. a man and woman are in the hospital this morning recovering from an early morning stabbing. the man tried to attack the woman, we were told, but the woman fought back stabbing him in the neck. the incident happened near lafayette and federal streets. the two were taken to the hospital. they are expected to be ok. a couple is behind bars this morning in baltimore county. in connection with the death of this man. their landlord. the body of 74-year-old david weeks was found in his home in rosedale last friday and now the man and woman who had been renting a room from him are accused of killing him. police say weeks planned to

have the couple evicted on friday. michael dimat thai and his girlfriend are charged with first degree murder. the medical examiner didn't have specifics as to whether the duct tape and pillow were cause of his death. mayor sheila dixon may have to be in two places at one time. lawyers want the mayor to go through two separate trials. she faces charges accused of stealing gift cards from needy families. she will go on trial for the charges in november but her attorneys want to delay her other trial where she faces perjury charges. in that indictment the mayor is accused of lying about gifts from her former boyfriend, real estate developer ronald lipscomb. and her attorneys are trying to have those charges thrown out of court. family and friends are still trying to cope with the loss of a teenager who lost her battle with the h1n1 virus. destinee parker, an eighth grader at montebello academy is the second young person in baltimore to die after coming down with the swine flu. she is the ninth person in our state. her death comes a week before

the state is expecting its first shipment of the vaccine. put down the cell phone and drive. the texting ban is in effect starting today. from now on if caught texting while driving you could be fined up to $500. the bans sending messages but doesn't cover reading a text message. also doesn't cover talking on the phone. those are still legal. don't forget to slow down. dozens of speed cameras are now up and running around baltimore city if you're speeding and get caught the law goes into effect today so this is how it works -- for the first month drivers who exceed the speed limit by at least 12 miles per power get a warning. you yet that in the mail. after that you get a ticket. that is about $40. today marks the beginning of breast cancer awareness month. we're starting the month out with a little information on a runway show. >> coming up, these rrchts your typical models, we introduce you to the models that are

together this location and we wanted to thank the community in baltimore. as a plastic surgeon i deal a lot with breast health. it was a very important issue for us so we put together the steps for the cure. we wanted it to be fun, exciting. it's bryant park comes to baltimore. it's breast cancer survivors walking the runway in special outfits made for them. we're celebrating their survival, thinking of women walking the same steps and trying to raise funds for a special organization, the breast cancer research foundation. >> do you know what you're going to be wearing? have you seen it? >> oh, yeah. >> how do you like it? >> it's gorgeous. it's not totally together but it's going to be fantastic. >> it's also got to be incredibly emotional. you two are modeling but are both breast cancer survivors. jeannie, have you thought at all about what this means to participate in something like this? >> oh, it's fantastic.

it's an opportunity to have a great time. usually people are asking me to sweat. i'm on the phone or i'm walking or i'm marching or putting up posters. this is, you know, got a wow factor. like, the red carpet. >> it likes like so much fun. nicole, your story is amazing because, you don't hear this a lot but you were diagnosed at 20? >> yes. >> with stage three. >> yes. >> how -- what was that like? >> i think a lot of people that are younger, my age, don't think it could happen to them. breast cancer is typically known to be post menopausal. it's a wakeup call that it can strike at any age. it's important to listen to your body, to get your annual checkups and be on that even when you're young because it can happen to you. this event is great to be a part of because it does celebrate survivor shi ship but also raises awareness of the disease and who it can happen to.

>> it's a big message. you had no family history, either. >> right. even if you're doing everything right in life you still need to live that active healthy lifestyle. without family history it could still happen to you as well. >> you run into women like this a lot? with the work that you do. it must also be -- they have both said it's an honor to be part of this fashion show but it must also be an honor to have them be part of it. >> it's our pleasure. what we hope to do is create a event that really moves people that attend, not only participate but attend, with the hope that other people will want to be involved. and activism and raising funds and awareness. and we really want to make an impact on our community. >> what are you going to wear? >> i'm wearing a ball gown. a purple, deep purple silk taffeta ball gown. >> you? >> the designers try to make it personal, with your life experiences and what you like to do. i had talked to my designer

game. burgers, dogs, ribs. is there a way to have comfort food and still control our waistline at the same time? melissa, our nutrition and wellness expert puts it on the plate for us. let's have a beer. >> all right. i'm ready. when it comes to tailgating obviously we all went beer, right? it's pretty high in calories. if you go for the lite beer you're not always getting the lite option. that means it's lighter than its counter part but not as compared to the other lite beers on the market. when you're looking for lite beer, look for one that is under 75 calories. i brought beck's. if you never tried it it's good. if you don't want the lite beer, what you can do is for every beer you have you have to promise you'll have a bottle of water in between. it will not only cut down on your calories, it will help

keep you hydrated outside. >> this is beck's premiere lite. >> 64 calories, it's good, try it. >> you say chicken instead of the hamburgers and hot dogs. >> yes. we still want good tailgate fair but you have to cut down on the calories a little bit. barbecued chicken. on the side instead of macaroni salad or potato salad or chips go for the corn chips. you can add a little salsa to that as well. >> not a bad deal. garlic mash bodyos. >> this is -- garlic mash potatoes. >> you you know these are going to be on everyone's buffet table heading into the holidays. they can add up to thousands of calories. it's very easy to eat 3,000 to 5,000 calories in a thanksgiving meal. >> how many? >> 3,000 to 5,000 calories in a thanksgiving meal. there are ways to make the side dishes a little more healthy. you can swap out the white flour pasta for wheat pasta.

instead of the full fat cheese you can use a little of -- a little higher flavor cheese like a bleu cheese, something stronger because you don't need as much in there. you can use evap raid milk as well as, instead of the butter. same for mashed potatoes. you can do that and add -- smash up potatoes and add in garlic. add in spices because it will taste as good as if you dumped the whole stick of butter in there. >> hot chocolate? >> yes. my favorite trick for that is to buy dark chocolate chips, melt them in the microwave. put them into your low-fat milk and spin them in. that way you're not using that really high-fat syrup we all buy from the store. then if you don't like dark chocolate chips you can go ahead and get cocoa powder. it's sold at every store in the baking section and that will be a lot lower in calories. >> we end up with dessert. pumkind pie. >> this is pumparfait, it's a -- pumpkin parfait.

it's a swap for pumpkin pie. this is in a can from the store. you can add in yogurt or vanilla pudding mix and crumble graham crackers on top. >> it's good? >> really good. >> how many calories are we saving? >> hundreds and hundreds of calories. on this alone you're going to save about 200 calories a dish. for this you'll save about 100. for the pumpkin pie you'll save around 200 or 300 calories. >> all right. >> this beer is just unbelievable. is there anything in it? no, there is something in it. all right. melissa, you're great. >> thank you. >> thank you so much. >> megan, what do you think of this very lite beer? >> you strike me as a lite beer loving kind of guy. if you're a golf fan, even if you're not you might want to head to timonium this weekend. that is because some of the biggest golf tournaments in the country once again in our backyard. we find out why it's worth going to see the golf greats.

welcome back to "good morning maryland" at 9:00. these days there's no doubt about it, there's a shortage of pharmacists nationally and locally. the college of notre-dame in maryland opened up the school of pharmacy. it happened this year and it's to help communities in need. abc2 news sherrie johnson headed out to the college to meet some of the inaugural class. take a look. >> reporter: college of notre-dame of maryland has been around since 1895. it sits on 58 acres providing students with the liberal arts education. but these days there's something new at the school. a school of pharmacy. >> what we want to be able to do is take that knowledge they learn and apply quality care to all the patients that are out there. particularly those patients in the underserved communities. >> reporter: last week college of notre-dame of maryland school of pharmacy welcomed its first class. administrators received nearly 500 applications but only 70

students were admitted to the four-year doctorate program. 29-year-old patrick donahue is looking forward to being a part of something so new. >> stimulating for me because i would be part of a new, something, brand new thing that is going to be good. and i would be the -- leadership is one of the qualities i think is important. it's going to come out of this whole program. and being the first class is, like, you know, kind of being the leader. and its in own way. >> reporter: administrators at college of notre-dame say this new pharmacy school helps meet the needs of the communities. with more and more pharmacists needed on a national and state level local pharmacists are happy to see a new school emerge to welcome even more pharmacists into the profession. >> there's so many things that pharmacists are doing now. we're trying to get more into health care, providing different services, diabetes management, and more. there's the need for more pharmacists to follow the needs of the community.

>> reporter: with the right education these students are well on their way to becoming top-notch pharmacists. sherrie johnson, abc2 news. >> the college of notre-dame school of pharmacy will be fully accredited in 2013 after the first class of graduates. and dr. valerie hogue from the school of pharmacy is here to tell us about it. thank you so much for coming in. >> thank you. >> it must be exciting. how's it going? >> it's going very well. we're fulfilling a pioneering tradition of a college of notre-dame of maryland. the college of notre-dame is really a college of firsts. it was the first school of pharmacy at a women's college in the united states. so we are on the cutting edge of providing not only good quality health care for our state but also for the nation. we're very excited about the inaugural class of 70 students. >> i thought it was interesting, you mentioned it was the first for women. this is actually a great field for women, what i've read but

why is that? >> it's a wonderful field for women. i can say that, having been a pharmacist for over 20 years now, providing not only education to patients but to students. the field actually, we're graduating at least 65% of our graduates nationwide are women. the field offers many, many areas in whiff women -- which women can work, not oath full time but part time and balance their family life. you find farms siforts in the community, pharmacists in communities, hmos, federal agencies, there are so many avenues. it gives women plenty of opportunities. >> it's great. you hear this is a hot field right now. it's also a field where there are no -- people are having trouble finding pharmacists. is that why it's a hot field? or are people just becoming more interested in it? ? i think it's a little of both. there's definitely a need. both statewide and nationally.

it's anticipated by some estimates that over 150,000 new pharmacists will be needed by 2020. and there still are, both within the state and nationally, many place that's can't fill their open pharmacist positions. they are having some difficulty with that. we at the college of notre-dame in maryland are trying to ease that burden a little bit. >> are you getting applications? >> we've gotten many applications since we started the new class. our name is now out there, thanks to folks at abc2. we are actually getting a lot of applications at this point. it's a lot different from last year when we had first started. >> good. what if somebody sees this and thinks, it's something i could be interested in? how would you advise them to go about, maybe pursuing a career in pharmacy or at least looking into it? >> a lot of the things you need to do is basically what you

would do in any -- pursuing any professional career but for pharmacy we would also encourage you to get to know what a pharmacist does. do some research about the profession. invest some time in understanding the kinds of things that we do. we are the medication experts. and we not only ensure delivery of medications but ensure appropriate medication use. having students to learn more about what they are about to enter is very important. also, you've got to look at the course work. at least 72 hours of course work, semester course work is needed. in order to apply. and that includes some of the basic sciences and some of the general education requirements. but if anyone is ever interested in knowing what they need to know for our school they can certainly look on our web site at www.ndm.edu. >>

you've ever seen? >> it's close. he's not the record but he's close. he's 60 some pounds. his name is beau, he's about 3 years old, looking for a home at the maryland spca. it's a beautiful picture. he loves women. he's a little shy of guys. it took me a few minutes for him to warm up to me but we were able to do that in the studio before we came in. >> he's a sweetheart. >> he is. just sitting there, wanting some love. give the spca a call if you are interested. >> ualire calling the -- while you're calling the spca, we had some people call with you questions. alison from odenton, are you on the phone? >> hi. >> i have a jack russell with a bad allergy problem. >> i think we're having trouble hearing you. she's got a jack russell. bad allergy problems. want to know if there's anything at home that will fix the allergies? >> there's not a lot of home remedies you can do. there are a few things though. the most important thing that you can do at home to help keep

your dog from scratching and having irritated skin too much, do some shampoos. you can pick up a nice oatmeal shampoo at the pet store. if you use it one once a week, lather up the dog, rinse him off, lather him up again, let it soak for about 10 minutes. rinse it off. it will help coat that skin a little and help take some of the itch out. you can also be careful with your foods because a lot of animals have food allergies. use a proper food. and stay on one food. don't vary food a lot because that will help increase allergy problems. but if your dog is having a lot of allergy problems you really need to see your veterinarian, get them on some antihistamines. unfortunately, most of the over the counter human antihistamines don't work well in animals so you need a veterinary antihistamine. you go get them on that dosage and keep them on it most of the summer and fall you'll have less allergies. >> julie, are you on the phone? >> yes. >> you have a k-9 dog?

>> a 9-year-old male k-9, excellent dog but has anxiety issues when people come around me. doesn't want people close to me. it's a problem. >> how long has he been retired for? >> i've had him since he was 10 months old. >> ok. it's important to remember if he's got some anxiousness and anxiety you need to work with him slowly, in incremental steps to try to get him to get over it. when i first met bo this morning, bo was a little leary of men. the women could say hi, he didn't care. as soon as a male came up he tended to back away. there we go. i think he's already got a home. what we did with bo, we took some food because he's food-oriented. i fed him a little. instead of feeding him i would pretend to feed him and then give him lots of love. with your animal, find out his comfort level. take him up to the park somewhere with some doggy
