in rye today. ar martin o'malley will turn for the fall social for the democratic committee. an inmate who walked away from a center. bergeron had become eligible for parole, but it had not yet been approved. he walked away friday night and if you have any information, you're asked to call the police. this morning a man from romania is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in laconia. police say he assaulted the woman who he knows at his house. he declined bail and is expected to appear in court tomorrow. a warning about a new scam circulating asking people to ask envelopes of money on their front doors. the strange request was reported last week, as jean mackin explains, people want to get the warning out quickly. police here in north hampton say the scam may have been reported

in their town, but they want a warning to go out to the entire state. police say the phone calls arrive with an unusual request, asking people to leave donations outside so that veterans and a visiting member of congress can stop by to collect. >> indicated that the vfw would be in the area with a local member of congress today, accepting donations and they were instructed to leave an envelope in the front door of the residence. >>, but it's all a scam. no member of congress is coming. the vfw does not collect donations this way. north hampton police informed the vfw and the attorney general's office about the scam and are now warning people not to fall for it. north hampton residents, donald and barbara worth say they won't be victims. >> i won't respond to anybody calling in on the telephone for donations. >> it is a sign of the times and

upper 20's as well. let's take a look at the satellite here, not a whole lot to worry about at the moment. we're mainly clear skies at the moment. there could be at times, because of a wind coming out of the northeast, that could kick up a few clouds at times in southeastern new hampshire because of that area of high pressure just to our north. so the clock-wise flow around it brings it in. it keeps it cooler at the coast and may kick up clouds at the seacoast. we'll see you in a moment. the latest on hurricane joaquin. it's a category 3, it's speeding up to 20 mile per hour face here headed toward the northeast and guess what, what's going to put it this afternoon right near bermuda. this one. it will go just to the west of the tiny island and that puts bermuda on the right side of the

mark on the east coast. flooding in north carolina. the schools considering changing from a division two to a division three school. and some parents said they didn't know that until the applications were submitted. and this morning several students were hailed as heroes for saving lives. right now the carolinas -- parts of the carolinas are experiencing flooding. at least five people have been killed because of the storm. meanwhile, the u.s. coast card continues to search for a missing container ship lost at sea. a life preserver from the ship was discovered 70 miles away from the last known position. authorities don't know if it was

>> welcome to new hampshire's business, i'm fred kocher. there's a natural gas pipeline proposed, as you know, across southern new hampshire, 80 miles across the southern part of the state and there are 20 towns that are opposed and they're highly organizedment here they are, they are amherst, brookline, fits william, litchfield, london, mason, merrimack, new ipswich. temple, troy, winchester and windham, now, here is a map of that pipeline that enters from massachusetts around wind chester and goes across southern new hampshire and to pelham and

back into massachusetts at dracut. we did an interview with kinder morgan and this time we're going to talk to four of those opposed from for towns. tad with brookline, new hampshire, welcome. >> thank you. >> mark from milford. >> thank you. >> marilyn from hollis. >> thank you. >> and john kylie from temple. >> thank you. >> and the most basic question i could ask, you're saying that the kinder morgan pipeline is unnecessary, why? to each of you, but tad first. >> first off, i think it's important for us to acknowledge that it's critical for our region to address regions addressing electricity and they are a fundamental to our economy. that being said, we believe it's a critical question to ask whether or not the kinder morgan pipeline is the optimal solution

the answer to that is an unequivocal no because of better alternatives. >> we'll get to that. you're the administrator in brookline. mark from milford, same question. >> many groups are focused on the winter peak, high electricity prices during winter months when we have peak demand. >> that's 50 days out of the winter. the rest of the time, they're operating 50% of capacity. you have to ask yourself. where do we get the additional gas during those 50 days. there's a recent study that was referenced by the new hampshire pnc that stated the best approach towards solving the gas shortage is utilizing our existing regional liquefied natural gas infrastructure. two winters ago we experienced very high--

very high electricity prices. >> right. >> this past winter we used 32 billion cubic feet of lng. twice as much as we used in the prior winter. and our electricity prices went down. so, effectively, what the industry could do is create a liquefied natural gas pipeline by refilling the lng storage facilities during the winter months. so you are opposed, you're the town administrator of milford and your town is opposed. >> yes. >> marilyn you're with the pipeline awareness group. why do you think the pipeline is unnecessary? >> i would say that this is kinder morgan's export pipeline masquerading as a so-called solution to an energy cries is is.

>> the crisis that mark spoke about can be dealt with with liquefied natural gas. kinder morgan really needs to build this pipeline to get a lot of gas to dracut where it can hook up with the maritimes and new england to get up to canada where it can be processed for export. >> so you don't think we are going to get gas here in new hampshire? >> we're going to get very little. >> john kylie from temple. you're a-- on an advisory committee to the selectmen on the pipeline. >> correct. >> same question, why do you think it's unnecessary? >> well, when you look at the liberty utilities proposal now before the public utility commission, they're prnlging out 20 years and they're projecting that they're going to add type infrastructure distribution systems in many areas of our state. and even with those projections,

bringing or be buying 4% of the capacity of this pipeline. if, when you look beyond the state of new hampshire, and add up the other interested parties, utilities interested in buying this gas, you still only get a very small fraction of the gas that would be coming through a pipeline of this size. this is just a huge project, as marilyn said, to solve an export need and it's being camouflaged as a domestic pipeline. >> now, we're going to continue this interview at the segment at 8:40 this morning, also, but we're going to ask a separate question and they're going to respond to the question, if it's approved, what are the impacts going to be in new hampshire? so far now i want to thank my guests, tad putney of brookline, marilyn and john, we'll see you

amy: a spokesman for kinder morgan appeared in new hampshire's business two weeks ago. you can watch the interview right here on our website, wmur.com. >> now, meteorologist josh judge with your storm watch 9 forecast. josh: well, a good sunday morning, it's a chilly start out there for sure this morning as parts of northern new hampshire in the upper 20's at the moment, so some freezing going on in some parts of not only northern new hampshire, but well inland locations, for example, perhaps some upper valley locations, maybe some areas around the lakes region. you may have a little bit of lightly scattered frost in some of those locations as well. you can see the temperatures, 30's and 40's. in terms of cloud cover there's hardly any at the moment. a northeast wind may kick up clouds or a sprinkle in areas near the seacoast as we go through the morning hours. a few of the areas here, some

there, then turning sunnier throughout the day today. temperatures remain a little cooler because of that northeast wind flow around this area of high pressure. it's keeping the sunshine and weather away and it's part of deflecting away part of hurricane joaquin. the wind are coming around it like this off the ocean, keeping things a little bit cooler. here is the latest on that, it's beginning to real speed up. it's a major category 3 hurricane in terms of its forward motion. the dot is bermuda. it's a very close call for them. current conditions for them right now. top winds about 120 miles per hour, but it is moving to the northeast at 20 miles per hour as well, meaning it is really speeding up and that's often a case as storms begin to head in this direction and also as they begin to show early signs of weakening. as it pushes ahead. there is that close call with

today and then by tomorrow afternoon, it's getting close to us. tomorrow night and into early tuesday morning, that it makes its closest call to new england, but we are still a good 500 miles away from the storm. so the only effects for us would just be choppy surf on tuesday and then rockets out of here without any issue, as i mentioned, not a major issue for us. this graphic showing the strongest winds and that dot is bermuda, so they're going to be really glanced by some of the strongest winds in this hurricane later today, see, it doesn't come that close. those strong winds to us as it stays out to sea away from all u.s. interests. speaking of which, here is our interests. new hampshire, young, a few clouds around possible for the morning and mid day hours in southern and southeastern new hampshire because of the winds off the ocean. you may notice them start to billow up. a little breezy this morning,

declined bail. he's expected to appear in court tomorrow. a warning about a new scam circulating asking people to leave envelopes of money on their front doors. the strange request was reported last week, as gene mackin explains, police in one seacoast town want to get the warning out quickly. jean: the scam may have been reported in their town, but they want a warning to go out to the entire state. police say the phone calls arrive with an unusual request, asking people to leave donations outside so that veterans and a visiting member of congress can stop by to collect. >> indicated that the vfw would be in the area with a local member of congress today, accepting donations and they were instructed to leave an envelope in the front door of the residence. >>, but it's all a scam. no member of congress is coming. the vfw does know the collect donations this way.

the vfw and the attorney general's office about the scam and are warning people not to fall for it. north hampton residents say they won't be victims. >> i just won't respond to anybody calling in on the telephone for donations. >> it's a sign of the time and you take a lot of older people, they get taken in by that. we aren't going to do that. >> police don't know of anyone leaving money outside yet and hope this warning will make them think twice. >> leaving money in the door is not a good thing. that just opens yourself up to being a victim. >> and police say don't just ignore a suspicious phone call. contact them to report a possible scam. so they can warn other people. in north hampton, jean mackin, wmur news 9. >> tables were transformed into details of fantasy, from harry

here is our storm watch 9 spotter network where the temperatures are on the chilly side all over the places, we're in the upper 30's and lower 40's, depending exactly where you are. you can see those temperatures varying. central parts of the state more of the same. many mid 30's in central parts of new hampshire and of course we get to northern new hampshire and those are in the upper 20's and lower 30's, certainly chilly out there. freezing warnings and frost warnings in effect for northern new hampshire this morning. part of it having to do with the clear skies. the wind fairly light out there. they will pick up a little at times this morning, breezy with winds coming in out of the northeast. why? because of this area of high pressure that's blocking things. by the way, blocking hurricane joaquin, but it's bringing winds in off the ocean, it keeps it a little cooler out there and also, that could kick up a few clouds around the seacoast at times today.

major category 3 hurricane. it's going to make a close pass to bermuda. after spending all week going barely anywhere, now it's up to 28 miles per hour and moving northeast and probably going to continue speeding up from here. so, it raises up past bermuda this afternoon. there's bermuda there and there's the track of the hurricane which may degrade to a category 2 and still move through their area with some strong damaging deadly winds and conditions and they're on the right side of the storm, which is usually the windier side. look how close it comes to us. the track is going to have it about 500 miles away from us. so the only effect here will just be the choppy seas. around here, clouds could be around parts of southeastern new hampshire at times today. partly to sunny conditions, the breeze diminishes this afternoon and temperatures a few degrees milder than what it was yesterday. tomorrow, more of the same after

another chilly start. we're sunny and we get into the lower half of the 60's tomorrow. by the time we get to tuesday we're in the mid and upper 60's, wednesday, a spot or two could hit 70, so things continue to go upwards from here. a look at the temperatures what to expect today. upper 50's in many locations and southeastern, closer to northeast wind. tonight a chilly one, similar to last night and tomorrow, look at that. back up into the lower 60's, a little milder and that trend continues for the week ahead. lots of sunshine. this is-- you would hardly know that a hurricane will be passing by within a few hundred miles of us, monday night into tuesday because it will be sunny and beautiful around here. less guilt, too, because we have the rain. amy: we dodged a bullet, it was on its path to us. josh: you have to let it find

effect there. st. a's college switching sports divisions. considering a switch from division 2 to division 3. some students and parents say they didn't know about it until the application had already been submitted. classes canceled this week at an oregon community college where a mass shooting took place. this morning, several students being hailed as heroes for saving lives that day. right now, parts of the carolinas are dealing with severe weather in the aftermath of hurricane joaquin in the atlantic. more than 11 inches of rain fell in charleston yesterday. president obama has declared a state of emergency in south carolina as flood warnings remain in effect for many parts of the east coast. at least five people have been killed because of the storm. meanwhile, the u.s. coast guard continues to search for a missing container ship lost at sea. a life preserver was discovered 70 miles away from the last known position last night. authorities say they don't know if it was just blown off in the storm or if this means the crew

had to ban ship. 28 of the crew members are from the united states. the portland press herald reporting four of those americans are from maine, including the captain. let's check now with josh judge in the weather center for a look at the forecast, josh. josh: much better than that as the storm stays away from new england. that. a look at windham on i-93. about. otherwise blue skies and a beauty of a day is coming up, 43 degrees there. 40's in most of southern new hampshire, but check out concorde at 35. and 31 in plymouth. 37 lebanon and north of the notches you're in the upper 20's. a very chilly start. freeze warnings for northern new hampshire and the frost advisories, the light blue as well. clear skies except for right along the seacoast where you've got a couple of clouds around and may have some around for the mid day hours. temperatures in the mid to upper 50's for most of us. not a bad one.

day the application was submitted. >> it should have been discussed about in this forum, should have been done months and months prior, and they would have gotten the feedback the school wanted to go in. >> the students recruited to come here were recruited under the illusion they would compete at a high level and now are cheated of that opportunity. >> desalvo says it's in the exploratory phase and take months for the ncaa to make a decision. he understands why people are so upset. >> i sent the letter and 20 minutes later i met with the students and the coaches. so it happened pretty quickly. >> desalvo says that st. a's fits a division three model because of the size of the school and operating budget. under division three, the school would have more options for how it distributes scholarship money. >> it's much fairer, it is a way to make sure that both athletes and non-athletes get institutional aid, but we're not going to decrease any funding for athletes.

>> if the ncaa accepts the application and the school decides to change divisions, all athletic programs would start competing in division three in fall of 2017. the it won't be complete until 2020, and athletes wouldn't be allowed to play in post season games. >> and it was the next three years of their lives aren't going the way they thought it would. >> if we make the change to division three, what makes us unique. we're just another division edge. >> this is a good thing that people are speaking up. we want to hear from them because the board has to make an informed decision at some point. us. carosa for that. president desalvo says that st. a's is one of 12 schools, at the most three are accepted.

thousands of granite staters are harnessing the power of the sun to stay warm and in some cases making a little money. >> pardon the pun, solar energy is hot right now. >> i would anticipate that this year we will probably be at 400% over where we were last year. >> granite state solar is hiring because new hampshire home owners are going solar in droves and the clock is ticking to cash in on impressive state and federal rebate programs, set to expire the end of 2016. >> we got about 3000 back the maximum you can get back from a residential owner in the state and there's about 7,000 back from the federal government in the form of a tax break. so that covered roughly half of the total cost. >> they went solar 18 months ago and during our interview, these panels were filling his gas tank and more. >> we do use a lot of electricity. i have a hot tub in the back, we run air conditioners, i have three electric cars, so our usage is very high and this

system certainly doesn't produce everything that we use, but it makes about a third of what we use. >> since inception, we've issued over 708 rebates to residential home owners. >> karen cramton is the director of sustainable energy, which manages the rebate for solar panels. doubling 2014's rebates and more than the past two years combined. >> the rebate program began with the renewable portfolio standard that was in 2008. >> that law mandates that 24.8% of the electricity come from renewable energy by 2025. and each year they acquire renewable energy credits or rec's based on a percentage of sales.

the highs right now, or the temperatures right now are in the upper 20's in northern new hampshire. so some frost and frozen conditions in the north country. you head farther to the south, as you can see, and those temperatures do head upwards into the 30's and then the 40's. clear skies for most part. there's a few clouds not showing up because they're low level around the seacoast right now, but that's really about it, otherwise we've got mostly sunny skies to start our day and that will be the case during a good portion of the day, a good amount of sunshine, some sun and clouds mixed in at times. we're protected by this area of high pressure, but along with it comes its clock-wise flow and that means winds coming in, out of the northeast and that's a little cooler wind direction coming off the ocean and that's why we may kick off the ocean a few clouds right around the seacoast region, for a time at the early and afternoon hours. latest on hurricane joaquin. it's a major category three

hurricane this morning and it's edging to bermuda. and the speck is, they've got hurricane warnings up. here are the hurricane conditions for joaquin and the hour. look at that, it's picking up in forward speed, rocketing northeastward at about 20 miles per hour. and that's the close pass it makes to bermuda. as far as we're concerned, it's staying quite a bit to the east. 4 or 500 miles away from new england and monday night into tuesday morning, when it's passing by the closest pass anyway to us. you can see it's quite a ways out. choppy seas and high surf the implications as it passes by. we will have clear skies. here are the top winds. a speck there on the edge. strongest winds. those are the wind, 100 miles per hour plus, bermuda on the edge there. they may see some damage through the day for this.

a look at the temperatures. it's in the 30's up north, but as we go through the morning, those temperatures in the upper 20's and lower 30's turn into 50's. in fact, getting into the upper 50's in some parts of northern new hampshire. meanwhile, manchester at 45 degrees, headed into the mid 50's, maybe the upper 50's in a few spots in southern new hampshire as well. you're closer to the coast, it will be cooler by a couple of degrees because of a northeast wind. the satellite showing just a few clouds here and there, not showing all that well, some very low level clouds that are right around the seacoast here, you can see some heading in and you may see a few of those around the coast for a little while. it will clear out this afternoon. winds out of the northeast today. thanks to the area of high pressure, but the winds will calm just a bit, especially as we head into the afternoon. it won't be as windy as yesterday. even this morning, but this morning, we'll see a little more wind than this afternoon. all of the clouds staying at bay

>> welcome to new hampshire's business. i'm fred kocher. this is the second part of an interview we started at 6:40 on the opposition to the natural it was pipeline proposed for southern new hampshire. 20 communities are highly organized to oppose it and here they are. they are amhurst, fits william, greenville, hollis, hudson, merrimack, mason, new ipswich, richmond, windham and others.

from massachusetts, new hampshire, winchester to pelham and massachusetts to dracut. opposed to the pipeline, tad of brockline. marilyn lerner of hollis, and john kylie of temple. tad, let's start with one of the key questions that you're addressing. if this pipeline is constructed proposed now for 2017 if it's approved, the impacts you're concerned about, what are they? >> the most obvious first impact, fred, the fact that it would cut an 80 mile swath across a large portion of the state and that swath would be 150 feet wide. and frankly, we don't think, given some alternatives that are currently in place, that it's necessary. >> you're the town administrator in brookline. >> correct.

>> blasting, which is required to trench the pipeline, impacts water in the granite state and plus the leaks they're known to have. and any unanticipated problems could seriously i am tactful-- impact our water. that's not a risk we should be taking, no, we should not take it. >> and mark from milford, the impacts you're concerned about? >> fred, one thing we're concerned about, the ethics and legality of taking private land and public land owned by our towns or state of new hampshire by eminent domain. >> federal eminent domain. >> yes. >> you're town administrator of milford. >> yes. >> it's different in temple, because the pipeline doesn't go through our town, but you have a concern with a school in particular. >> the pipeline goes south of

the new hampshire-- or rather the temple border in the town of new ipswich. that's the site where the compressor station for the entire state of new hampshire would be siteed, it's a 41,000 horsepower that provides the psi that drives the gas through the pipeline on a daily basis. and these compressor stations release toxins, not in the event of an accident, but whenever they have excess pressure in the pipe, they open the valve and some of the releases are as short as a few minutes and some are substantially longer. >> that's close to the school? >> yes, they're releasing toxins, known for nose bleeds,

up to liver and other cancers. this would be very close to many homes, farms, but in particular, it would be a quarter mile from the temple elementary school. >> you're on the advisory committee to the select on the pipeline. >> correct. >> you acknowledge, i think all of you, that we need more energy in new hampshire. where should it come from? >> well, i think that one thing that people aren't realizing is the tremendous strides we're making in renewables. there's 5800 mega watts of electricity projects currently planned in the region and that accounts for 20% of our electric generation capacity. that's a meaningful number. and something that will certainly be helpful as we move forward. >> anybody else? >> the lng segment that i mentioned in the first segment, can provide the energy that we have at winter peek at savings

just as warm if not a degree or two warmer than many parts of southern new hampshire today. all because of an area of high pressure that's right about here and the winds resolving around it in a clock-wise fashion bringing in cooler air. that does it cooler from the coast and farther inland milder by a few degrees. it can kick up a few clouds over near the ocean and the coast there. you'll see partly sunny skies there, partly to mostly sunny everywhere else. obviously, we've been keeping a close tab on hurricane joaquin, right now racing to bermuda. that little speck right there is bermuda. and there will be a close pass. winds diminished down to 115 mile per hour. a hurricane and a major one at that. a close pass at bermuda and then for us, staying a good 500 or more miles off shore. monday night into tuesday.

when it makes its closest pass here at new england and then continues to race up into the atlantic, far away from us. here is the top winds around the storm. the red showing 100 miles per hour. the yellows showing 50 miles per hour. look how far away from us the next few days. again, no worries here, except for choppy seas, today, tonight, the next couple of days, well in advance of the hurricane, there's a high surf advisory in effect for this afternoon and tonight and probably the next few days. a few clouds in southeastern new hampshire and more sunshine on the way for the next couple of days. those temperatures get warmer and warmer the next several days, so, today, mid to upper 50's across the state and another chilly one tonight and another cold start tomorrow. check it out. you'll see the temperatures are going to be heading up into the 60's as we go through the next few days, 70 degrees as we get toward around tuesday, tuesday or wednesday, those are the two
