6:20 am
they're all over the place because many vehicle crashes have been caused by slippery conditions on bridges and overpasses. it may not be something you really think about when you're driving, but it can be very deceiving thing for drivers. so, why exactly do bridges freeze first, here is the answer and why you need to be more cautious when crossing bridges in the winter. first off, cold air surrounds the surface of a bridge and over the top and the bottom and bridges lose heat from both sides. bridges have no way to trap heat and they'll ice up as soon as the air temperature decreases to the freezing point or 32 degrees. roads, on the other hand. as you can see down here, those have ground underneath them and retain their heat a little bit more. secondly, bridges today are built with steel and concrete, both of which are good heat conductors, they conduct heat, any heat that the bridge has, moves through the bridge to the surface where the heat is lost and the airflow around it is
6:21 am
retaining some of that cooler air that happens when the temperatures cool. now, roads are mostly made from asphalt, a poor conductor of heat and that lessens the rate of heat loss from the roadment bottom line, you want to be safe when you pass over bridges. here is what you need to know. if you're passing over a bridge, slow the speeds when you're approaching, because it could be slippery and you don't know it. if you happen to slide along the surface, don't hit the brakes, keep the steering wheel straight. the best thing to tell you to keep you safe. we want your questions, send them at wmur.com or facebook us. i'm meteorologist hayley lapointe. amy: coming up next, thanksgiving is just around the corner, but it's not all about the turkey and stuffing. we'll show you a tasty and healthy salad you might be able to serve with dinner. in the next half hour of news 9

thing for drivers. so why exactly do bridges freeze first? here is the answer and why you need to be more cautious when crossing bridges in the winter. first off, cold air surrounds the surface of a bridge and goes over the top and underneath the bottom. this means that bridges lose heat from both sides and bridges have no way to trap any heat so they will ice up as soon as the air temperature decreases to the freezing point, 32 degrees. roads on the other hand, as you can see, down here, those have ground underneath them and retain their heat a little bit more. secondly, bridges today are built with steel and concrete, both of which are good heat conductors because the materials conduct heat, any heat that the bridge has, moves through the bridge to the surface where the heat is lost and the airflow around it is retaining some cooler air that happens when they cool. roads are made from asphalt, a poor conductor of heat and lessens the rate of heat loss
7:13 am

8:01 am
crashes have been caused by slippery conditions on bridges and overpasses and it may not be something that you think about when you're driving, but it can be deceiving for drivers. why exactly do bridges freeze first? here is the answer and why you need to be more caution when crossing in the winter. first offings cold air surrounds the surface of a bridge and goes over the top and underneath the bottom. this means that bridges lose heat from both sides and bridges have no way to trap any heat so they will ice up as soon as the air temperature decreases to the freezing point or 32 degrees. roads, on the other hand, as you can see down here, those have ground underneath them and retain their heat a little more. secondly, bridges today are built with steel and concrete. both of which are good heat conductors because the materials conduct heat, any heat that the bridge has, moves through the bridge to the surface where the heat is lost and the airflow around it is retaining some of that cooler air that happens
8:02 am
now, roads are mostly made from asphalt, which is a poor conductor of heat and that lessens the rate of heat loss from the road. bottom line is, you want to be safe when you're passing over bridges. so here is what you need to know. if you're passing over a bridge, slow the speeds when approaching it because it could be slippery and you just don't know it. if you're sliding and happen to slide along the surface, don't hit the breaks, keep the steering wheel straight and that's the west thing to keep you safe. we want your winter questions, join us or facebook us, i'm meteorologist hayley lapointe. coming up next thanksgiving just around the corner. and stuffing. the tasty and healthy solid that might accompany your dinner. paris under siege.
