bad news, rain on the way. but that's actually some good news too. because we need it. we have a dense fog advisory in effect for sections of new jersey and limited visibility throughout the region. sections of long island seeing visibility under a mile. and along the jersey shore and inland locations as well. 53 to start. we've lost a degree in the last hour. 61 with clouds for the most part. rain rolls in later today. could see heavy rain and thunderstorms down to 61 tonight. there's where that dense fog advisory is in effect from sussex to morris to middle section and somerset, monmouth, hunter ton, and warren counties visibilities are limited. the full forecast coming up in a little while. lots of clouds today, keep that in mind. you've got to drive carefully on the roads and emily will get you where you need to go. >> much better on the belt parkway, had that crash at leopard's boulevard, everything has been cleared and reopened. garden state parkway, police activity southbound at the

so hopefully not too much of a delay. take a look here, grand central park way near laguardia, things are moving along fine. starting off your monday morning commute without too many problems. today marks three years since a deadly school massacre in newtown connecticut took the lives of 20 children and six adults adults. for the first time the anniversary falls a school day. school administrators at the elementary school plan to keep everything as normal as possible. there will be a moment of silence at the middle school and high school. >> the anniversary being marked for events that are calling for gun control. today several groups will be meeting in lower manhattan. "today in new york's" katherine craig is there for the latest. >> reporter: a rally scheduled at the federal building in broadway. lawmakers, you'll be seeing them, also a large gun control group. large events today like they took place over the weekend.

the orange walk are the goal to end gun violence. they gathered to commemorate the three-year anniversary of the sandy hook tragedy. some also talked about losing their loved ones to gun violence. moms demand action for guns in america, that's one of the groups that gathered there. also on a similar note, new york senator charles schumer and governor cuomo demanded the federal government shared classified watch list information on suspected terrorists. those who can't fly because they're on the terror watch list. to prevent them from legally buying guns. >> to allow people to you believe have terrorist connections to buy guns is so irresponsible that people must be living in a state of denial. >> reporter: there are those who oppose more gun control, arguing people's constitutional rights shouldn't be taken away without due process. and kerry, again, the event here today, broadway and lower

today, due to track maintenance. a lot of detours with the new york city buses. a few, not bad. new jersey transit, alternate side rules are in effect. long island, a community came together to quickly rebuild a 9/11 memorial destroyed by vandals on saturday. local firefighters found out about it, purchased building materials and worked through the night to rebuild the monument. 80-year-old bill murphy first ago. yesterday firefighters gave him the honor of placing the eight-foot flagpole back in place. this morning a massage therapist accused of sexually abusing a client is headed to court in nassau county. police say george garcia inappropriately touched a woman 3rd. they say he was working at elements massage in rockville center when the woman says that he touched her. police would like any other possible victims to come forward.

for a shooting suspect on a dirt bike who opened fire in east harlem on second avenue last night. neighbors say a group of men on dirt bikes and motorcycles riding up and down the street, police say one of them pulled out a gun and shot a 19-year-old man. >> all i hear is the motorcycles. and then three shots. back to back. i thought it came from the motorcycle. the wheels or something. but then i came out and saw what was going on. >> the teenager was taken to harlem hospital and is due to be released. police have not made any arrests. russia summoning turkey's military attache because of the latest tensions between those uncountries. the rugs say one of their battleships had to fire on a turkish fishing boat. they say it happened yesterday in the aegean sea near greece. the russians insist it was only a warning shot to avoid collision. this morning president obama crossing the potomac over to the

america's battle against isis. then we should hear from him in the noon hour. the white house says don't expect any changes in strategy, however, "usa today" is reporting that u.s. war planes are making some changes. they're now bombing moving targets like oil tankers to cut oil profits to isis. northern new jersey is extending its black bear hunting season. the division of fish and wildlife had hoped 700 bears would be caught. but as of saturday, 472 have been killed. the extended season begins wednesday and ends on saturday. animal activist groups are protesting the hunt. they call it inhumane. if you use twitter, you might have gotten a warning. the social media service said e-mail to some of its users warning them that a foreign government may be trying to hack into their accounts. the e-mail says that somebody could be trying to steal phone numbers and other personal information. so far, though, there's no evidence that they have been

a building on 64th. there are two lanes on 63rd that are still shut down because of fears that more bricks could fall. today is the third biggest online shopping day of the season. it's being called green monday. this was concocted by ebay as its biggest sales day of the year. companies like amazon and walmart are also getting involved. today is the busiest holiday mailing day of the year for the united states postal service. that means more people will be dropping off cards, letters and packages than any other day of the year. the agency recommends sending packages by december 21st for christmas arrival and estimate more than 15.5 billion pieces of mail will be sent this holiday season. >> i don't know, green monday seems more like gray monday to me. soggy start to the week. we've got plenty of clouds around. keep the umbrellas handy. several doses of rain this week. and it looks like we are going to see near-normal temperatures

but we're still in a moderate bubble with respect to climate. take a look and see what's going on. visibility around the area limited. 1.25 miles in islip, that's up. car mile in belmont, 3 miles in bridgewater. just watch it, 2 1/2 miles in monticello. dense fog advisory in effect through about 10:00 this morning. as you head through some of the counties in new jersey, sussex, morris, warren, hunterton, somerset, middle section, ocean counties. if you're traveling in those areas take it slow and easy, don't use the high beams. 53 in new york city. 52 in poughkeepsie. 55 in montauk. 54 in westhampton. 52 in morristown. 53 in bridgewater. not lot of variation. how about yesterday? just remarkable. look at all of these records set in central park, in jfk, bridgeport, islip. laguardia, you didn't set a record but you may very well today. because once again, these are where the temperatures stand and

degrees in the park. so we very easily could break some more records today. 6 straight days of 60-plus temperatures in december. only one day in the 40s. so far we're 9.5 degrees above our norm for the month and there's no big call-down coming. a return to norms for the end of the week. but that's about it. then we slide up once again. storm tracker shows plenty of clouds in the area. the rain to the west. see what the future holds for us. you can see scattered showers to the north but nothing doing as far as big rain. then we're cloudy conditions at about 11:00. it's not until evening time when the major rain begins to roll on through. some heavy rain tonight. possible thundershower activity. how about that for springlike weather conditions. and then 11:00 still scattered showers. moderate rain. and pushing out before let's say 3:00, 4:00 a.m. when we begin to clear, and tomorrow looks like a good day. today clouds and rain, heavier stuff during the latter portion of the day.

"today in new york" in rochelle park in bergen county, there's a large crime scene. >> reporter: good morning, darlene. we just arrived on the scene a few minutes ago. a lot of police activity here right now. this is all unfolding in front of the bergen county board of social services. right in the parking lot. i want to show you video we shot just a few minutes ago. you can see a toyota camera in the parking lot, it's got the doors open, the windows are blown out. police have been searching that car. we understand this may be a possible police-involved shooting. the bergen county prosecutors major crimes vehicle taped out this parking lot. a lot of investigators on the scene. they've closed off much of this area. the ramp from route 17 to passaic is shut down, keep that in mind. once again we're waiting just to get a little bit more information.

suspended until 2:00. shuttle buses are provided. you'll find detours, new york city buss this morning, not bad. everything else looks okay. alternate side rules in effect today. a westchester man is being hell held on $100,000 bond after a deadly collision. police say he was going the wrong way on i-684 in bedford early sunday and crashed head-on into another car. 23-year-old zachary toxin is charged with criminally negligent homicide. the driver in the other car, 64-year-old elaine ena lopez, was killed. police are investigating whether toxin was intoxicated. a driver in custody after a hit and run-in convenes. a 21-year-old woman in critical condition. witnesses say this victim pushed a smile child out of the way before she was hit. investigators tell us the suspect took off after hitting the woman at a crosswalk near seger boulevard and beach 19th street in far rockaway. police caught up with the driver

closing arguments today in baltimore in the freddie gray death trial. officer william porter is charged with manslaughter after gray died of spinal injury he suffered in police custody. prosecutors said porter was negligent for not buckling gray in and calling a medic. porter is one of six officers facing charges in gray's death. graphic cell phone video shows a deputy shooting a suspected gunman in southern california. it may be disturbing to watch. deputies fired more than two dozen shots at nicholas robertson at a los angeles gas station. police say he was waving a gun as they approached and ignored commands to put the gun down. >> there are two women and three children in a car at a pass pump that is within five feet of him at the time. >> he's crawling on his knees! he was crawling on his knees and they kept shooting! why? >> robertson's family is calling on the justice department and

police have not made any arrests. a pastor in the bronx accused of stealing money from his church to pay for a male prostitute has resigned. a letter from father peter mqquelly was read reading in part, it is in best interests of the parish this matter be resolved without me serving as your pastor. his resignation comes after a group of parishioners filed a lawsuit accusing him of stealing money from the parish to pay for this male escort and to buy a house in brick, new jersey. >> if it's true, it is a gross injustice. it really hurt us badly. >> our own investigation and our forensic audit of the parish has thus far not substantiated the claims people are making. >> so far no charges have been filed and the father does remain a priest, however, he months longer assigned to a church. news for your health, encouraging and troubling news
