yes, you need the jackets, but probably not the hat, gloves, and scarves you needed yesterday. 50s and 60s are coming back. we'll look at the seven-day forecast coming up. >> raphael, thank you. this morning, investigators continue to search for answers in the murder of a jersey city shop owner. >> we know the shooting happened during an apparent robbery on bergen avenue. pei-sze chang has the story. >> reporter: investigators from the hudson county prosecutor's office examined the tiny store for clues. officials say the store owner was shot and killed after an apparent robbery. >> one of my friends came and told me she took a pair of jeans or something and just shot him. >> reporter: freddie works across the street. while he did not see the shooting himself, many customers came to his store afterwards describing what they heard and saw. >> when you hear that someone got shot and killed --

this clothing idea on bergen wiavenue say the man is of asian decent and described him as a good guy. >> i don't know what's going on. it's happening all over. it's a shame for something like this to happen in broad daylight. >> reporter: earlier, we did see a detective going from store to store along these streets looking for any security video that might lead them to the shooter. at this point, no one is under arrest, and this is the 24th homicide this year for jersey city, which is greater than last year's total. reporting from jersey city, pei-sze cheng, "today in new york." police need your help to identify a man they believe attacked a woman in brooklyn. it's an update from a story earlier this week. this vid police say this man assaulted a woman wednesday night in a stairwell of an east flatbush apartment building. if you recognize the man, please call the nypd. the gunman who allegedly

county now behin bars this morning. police arrested 25-year-old christopher dam. they say he was seen on surveillance video tuesday night with a shotgun. the owner chased him out of the store. the gun went off, but no one was hurt. happening today, a memorial to mark the anniversary of the murders of two new york city police detectives. rafael ramos and his partner wenjian liu were sitting in their patrol car when someone opened fire. a plaque dedication will be held this afternoon followed by a vigil and wreath laying ceremony at the scene of their murders. now decision 2016. bernie sanders and hillary clinton clearing the air in the controversy over a data breach of clinton's voter information. >> the two joined martin o'malley in new hampshire for

we've got some good news on this sunday, december 20th, to start off our week. it is only 36 degrees outside, but raphael miranda is here. he's here to tell us things may be looking better. feeling a little differently today. >> it was cold yesterday. >> freezing. >> it was legitimately -- you could say it was cold out. >> the novelty has won off, i think. we felt cold now. >> i kind of liked it. i was running around midtown doing shopping. felt the way it should this time of year. >> normal weather. >> mixed emotions i've seen out there. some are like, okay, that was enough. we are headed in that direction the next few days. today we're transitioning out of the blustery conditions we saw yesterday. not going to be as windy today. temperatures are still down there. in fact, 36 right now. we were hoping to get below freezing for the first time this season in central park. we have a lot of cloud cover out there. that's insulating the atmosphere. that keeps those temperatures a little warmer than we expected. it's 36. it's not below freezing.

we'll see physical we ever get there this year. or for this season anyway. maybe have to wait until january. temperatures in the hudson valley in the 20s and low 30s right now. 35 in kingston. looking at 29 degrees up in ulster county. 33 in poughkeepsie. temperatures in the 20s in monticello monticello. well, winds are gusting around 20 to 30 miles per hour. not as intense as yesterday. they will diminish as we head throughout the morning. by the afternoon, these wind gusts are really gone, much lighter as we head into the second half of the day. right now, feels chilly. you need the jackets. windchills in the teens and 20s. coldest spots are north and west of town. here's a look at storm tracker. a nice quiet high-pressure day once again.

there's no word at this hour on how the fire started. and look at this video out of queens. flames and smoke spiralled into the skies over long island city. crews rushed to the fire on jackson avenue just before 2:00 p.m. yesterday. officials say a private contracting crew with a drilling rig hit a con edison line. gas began to leak. that's what sparked the fire. one worker was treated for minor injuries. and in jersey city, more than two dozen people are out of their homes after a fire tore through a brick apartment building. that fire erupted about 3:15 p.m. yesterday. crews were able to get everybody out safely. dozens of firefighters had to work that scene, dousing the flames. we're hearing one brave resident ran into the building trying to save people. >> i see the flames coming out the side of the building. when i saw that, i run inside the house. i went inside to knock on the door. no one answered because they were all outside. i thought there were people

>> everybody got out safely. one firefighter was taken to the hospital after being hit by falling debris. embattled pharmaceutical executive martin shkreli is defending himself on twitter. he calls the criminal charges against him baseless and without merit, and he predicts he'll prevail. fbi agents arrested shkreli on thursday. according to prosecutors, he ran something similar to a ponzi scheme while heading up a company. shkreli later took over as ceo at touring pharmaceuticals, where he became known for jacking up the price of a life-saving hiv drug by 5,000%. he resigned after his arrest. a new york street this morning now bears the name of a prominent local pastor. >> one, two, three. >> the sign at the corner of wickliffe and west market

his successful battle against drug addiction served as an inspiration to many of his followers. a big victory rally at ground zero for an extension of the zadroga act. the bill, which president obama signed yesterday, provides medical care to sick 9/11 first responders through the year 2090. local politicians joined police, firemen, and survivors to celebrate. for weeks, they've urged congress to pass an extension. although it ends the cloud of uncertainty, many say permanent funding should have been approved years ago. >> people suffering, people dying, and people waited too long. >> if we did not extend this program, people would die. no question about it. >> the bill also extends the september 11th victim compensation fund for six more years. well, it is santa con, hoboken style. one week after new york celebrated the annual pub crawl, new jersey had its turn. the santa-clad revelers this weekend may have been a bit more

well, this is a discovery that might make your skin crawl. a poisonous indian cobra found on a container ship in new jersey. >> why did it have to be snakes? we get a play-by-play of the capture in port elizabeth. >> reporter: exclusive video of the recovered snake, a classic indian cobra. one bite can mean death if not treated immediately. >> someone thinks cobra, the indian cobra is what's going to pop to mind. >> reporter: the is picture shows where it stowed away on a journey through south asian waters, ending up here in port elizabeth on monday. crew members on board called u.s. fish and wildlife. dozens of long shoremen not taking a chance, stopped june

deep hole they went, not knowing where the cobra might be. >> we had our flashlights, made sure we weren't reaching in blindly. >> reporter: they found this 18-inch-long roughly 1-year-old snake close to where it had first been spotted. using long grapple tongs, they were able to put it in this bag. although although, she's recovered well, she's in no position to escape when she was found. >> it was a little cold down there, which slows them down. also, the tanks are filled with seawater. so the snake was dehydrated and a little weak. >> reporter: even so, these doses of anti-venom were on hand just in case. as for the snake, no one can say how she got on board, but this cobra will be in quarantine for 30 days. the bronx zoo hasn't decided yet what it will do with the snake, but if it does keep it, it will be the only one of its race that they have on display here.

but she's not just a witness. sybil morial is a change maker and a civil rights pioneer. we welcome her to the show today. it's really an honor for us to be in your presence. >> thank you. >> reading through this book, i found myself reading history and now meeting a woman who was part of that history in so many ways. you thought about writing this book, i hear, for a while, but you decided not to do it until now. but why now after all this time? >> i'll tell you what, i have retired from 28 years as an administrator. two months later, katrina came and flooded my house. i evacuated to baton rouge and was there for eight years. during that trial, i had lost photographs and memorabilia. i was really grieving over it. so i began to think about my life and the good things in it.

the next morning, i'd get on the computer. when i had like 15 stories, i thought, i need to do this for my children and grandchildren. >> and it took something as devastating as katrina to bring you to this point in your life. this is the book. it's a very fast read. it's not a huge book. you can read this in no time. but it packs a very powerful punch in terms of the history that's within it. now, you attended xavier university for a couple years in new orleans. then you went on to boston university. how did that change your life? >> that was an awakening. i loved my city, but i wanted to know somewhere else. so i went to boston. there everything was open. it was just wonderful. i could go to the theater. i could go to the museums. there were no restrictions. >> the life you'd never had. >> but it was also an awakening. i became a woman then. as you read in the book, martin luther king was a student. >> we have a picture here of dr.

what was that like? >> that was a party that he had in his apartment for my best friend, who had just gotten her master's degree in january. so we had a good time. incidentally, martin used to give sermons at churches when a minister had to be out of town. we would always go. i remember one sermon, he talked about women. a woman is a great institution. and that woke up my feminine spirit. my black spirit was always there. >> but your feminine spirit really came to fruition then. you founded an organization, the league of good government. what was that organization about? >> well, we -- my friend had asked me to join a league of women voters. they couldn't because it was against state law for us to join any organization that was white. we couldn't meet together.

so i organized and seven of my friends organized this group. we went out to the communities and went through the voter registration process, which was very involved. every week we had a workshop with the people in black churches, which always opened to us. it was required to have a literacy test, a citizenship test, certain identification, and then they could expect humiliation. so it was heartwarming to work with these people who wanted so much to vote and have their voice heard. >> and we're seeing some of that now in some states where they're rolling back. >> i think jim crow is hovering over us again. it really is sad. >> it's very, very disturbing. you would think we would be way past this right now. we're happy to have you with us today. pick up this book. it's called "witness to change: from jim crow to political empowerment." this is a wonderful book.

patrol car when they were executed. it happened at a very tense time when there were a number of people killed at the hands of police. you remember eric garner, michael brown. the shooter killed himself shortly after. you may also remember this scene. a huge outpouring of support from all over the country. people leaving flowers and messages, tens of thousands, including officers attended their funerals. both officers were posthumously promoted to detectives. since then, commissioner bratton has focused his efforts on community policing and training. he will be here in a few hours, lynda and gus. he will be dedicating plaques at the 48th precinct where they both worked. back to you. >> thank you very much, lori. and the search is on this morning for a gunman who shot and killed a man at a clothing store in jersey city. this happened around 5:00 p.m. yesterday inside the top plus store on bergen avenue. witnesses say the suspect grabbed a pair of jeans and opened fire on the store owner.

victim was a good man. >> you know, what it is and what's going on, it's happening all over. it's a shame. for something like this to happen in broad daylight. >> detectives have been going from store to store along bergen avenue looking for any security video that may lead them to the shooter. and surveillance video could be the key from tracking down a man who police say attacked a woman in brooklyn. this video is from the new kirk avenue subway station in flatbush. police say the man you're watching there assaulted and robbed a woman wednesday night in the stairwell of an east flatbush apartment building. if you recognize the man in this video, please call police. and a suspected gunman faces charges this morning after a gas station robbery that took an unexpected turn. police arrested 26-year-old christopher dam of high park friday. they say dam is a person you can see in this surveillance video. he stormed the gas station with a shotgun. to his surprise, the owner fought back and chased him out of the store. his gun went off, but nobody was hurt.

we've got a development here. nbc sources in kenya are tells us a suspicious device found aboard a paris-bound plane is indeed a suspected bomb, but right now at this point, we don't have results on whether it was active or alive. this bomb scare forced a flight to make an emergency landing in kenya. it was en route from mauritius off the coast of east africa when crew members noticed a suspicious device in the bathroom. the plane did safely touchdown in kenya. we have a still picture of that plane parked on the runway. everyone on board evacuated safely, and the passengers said that crew members remained calm. >> the plane just went down, slowly, slowly, slowly. we just realized probably something was wrong, but the personnel of air france, which was great, they were wonderful. they kept everybody calm and real quiet. we didn't know what was happening. >> fortunately, no one was injured. the investigation is ongoing.

joining us now is chef john greco iii. good morning, sir. i have to confess, i will not be objective during this segment. steak is my favorite meal. mpl >> i agree. >> i saw this in the hallway and got genuinely excited. let's talk about cuts. you have a massive selection here. >> well, buying meat, you have three different cuts. we have select, choice, and the prime. >> what are the differences? i hear that sometimes. >> theable marbling, the fat content. more fat, more flavor. select has minimal. a little bit of marbling happening. throughout the meat, a lot of marbling. when you cook it, it actually bastes itself. unbelievable. >> when do you want a fattier piece of meat? >> all the time. >> okay. so that's a good thing. you don't want it overly lean.

unless you're doing a roast or cooking it for a while. >> okay. this is something special at your place, right? >> this cut is called a toma tomahawk. >> what, it comes off here? >> it's one of those fred flinstone things. this is what we have at k rico. it's a 103 rib. >> it feeds about 13 people. >> most people get it for one. >> get out of here. okay. how do you season that? something special you do? >> all the herbs that we use are freshly ground. salt and pepper. it goes straight on. >> for a really good steak, you don't really need to do a lot with it. >> just quality. >> and this is -- >> this is the filet mignon. >> i'm used to it cut like that. >> this is ready to go in the

>> what do you put on that? >> rosemary, garlic, red onions, olive oil. i let it sit for about a half an hour. >> i always do rosemary with lam lamb. >> right before i sere it, very important you sere it to lock in the juices, i take a special rub, which is spoked pulverized chipotle. you sere it on the top of the stove. put it into the oven for about 45 minutes to an hour, and you get a wonderful roast. >> a lot of people watching live in an apartment. they don't have the big grill. if you're in an apartment, it's tough to cook steak well. when you're saying the oven, are you going the broiler or baking? >> baking. >> really? so 45 minutes at 375? >> 450. and if you can't sere it on top, crank it up to 550, put it in there for ten minutes, and that will seal it and crust it up a little bit.

especially those with kids, they get worried about handling raw meat this time of year. any advice? >> sure. when you're going to cook meat, take it straight out of the refrigerator. always keep it below 40 degrees. gloves are not necessary because you're going to cook the product. >> you don't have to get too conservative. before we go, i want to mention your restaurant is not your standard steakhouse. in addition to steak, i'm looking at them empanadas. tell us what else. >> we have a little mash, a huge staple. we have plantain chips. we have wonderful fish as well. >> something to please everybody. 51st and 9th avenue. 11 months, doing well. >> going on a year almost. january will be a year. >> congratulations. >> thank you very muff ch. >> happy holidays. i'm going to just put the rest of that in my briefcase. over to lynda at the desk. >> thanks, gus.

they were executed while sitting in their patrol control by a angry over the shooting deaths of eric garner and michael brown. there was a huge outpouring of support from officers across the country. tens of thousands attending their funerals. since their death, commissioner bratton has made community policing and training a key part of this administration. he also posthumously promoted both officers to detectives. they both worked at the 84th precinct near. today plaques will be dedicated in their honor. back to you. >> lori, thank you very much. several fires in the city and new jersey to tell you about this weekend. one of them is deadly. >> in brooklyn, a blind 64-year-old woman who lived alone i do died when a fire broke out in her home. a neighbor tried to help, but the smoke was too heavy, and he couldn't get inside. at this hour, there's no word on how the fire started. and take a look at this video coming out of queens.

the flames and smoke spiralled into the skies over long island city. crews rushed to the fire on jackson avenue just before 2:00 yesterday. officials say a private contractor with a drilling rig hit a con edison line. gas began to leak, sparking the fire. one worker was treated for minor injuries. and in jersey city, more than two dozen people are now out of their homes after fire tore through a brick apartment building. the building also houses a hair salon. that fire erupted about 3:15 yesterday afternoon. crews were able to get everybody out safely. dozens of firefighters working that scene, dousing the flames. one neighbor ran into the building trying to save people. >> i see the flames coming out the side of the building. when i saw that, i run inside the house. i went inside to knock on the door, but no one answered. because they were all outside. i thought there was people inside. >> everybody got out safely, but one firefighter was taken to the hospital after being hit by falling debris. embattled pharmaceutical executive martin shkreli claims

charges against him. shkreli took to twitter to call the charges against him baseless and without merit. thursday. according to prosecutors, he ran something similar to a ponzi scheme while heading up a company called retro fin. he later took over as ceo as a pharmaceutical company where he became famous for jacking up the price of a life-saving hiv drug by 5,000%. he resigned after his arrest. a newark street has a new name this morning. >> one, two, three. [ cheers and applause ] >> the sign there are at the corner of wickliffe and west market streets now reads reverend dr. ronald b. christian plaza. his successful battle against drug addiction served as an inerspiration to many of his followers. he passed away in october at the age of 51.

of duty one year ago today. rafael ramos and wenjian liu were executed while in their patrol car here. the murders happened at a very tense time when there were a number of people killed at the hands of police. eric garner, michael brown. the shooter killed himself shortly after. officers from all over the country came here to pay tribute at the spot where liu and ramos were killed. tens of thousands attened their funerals. both were posthumously promoted to detectives. today, gus and lynda, plaques will be dedicated in their honor at the 84th precinct. back to you. >> thank you for that update, lori. this morning, the search is on for a gunman who shot at a clothing store owner in jersey city. this happened around 5:00 p.m. yesterday inside the top plus store on bergen avenue. witnesses say the suspect grabbed a pair of jeans and opened fire on the store owner, killing him. people who work near say the victim was a good man. >> what it is and what's going on, it's happening all over. it's a shame.

this to happen in broad daylight. >> detectives have been going from store to store along bergen avenue looking for any security video that may lead them to the shooter. police using surveillance video in this store here. they need your help to identify a man they belief attacked a woman in brooklyn. it's a story we told you about earlier this week. this video from the new kirk avenue subway station in flatbush. police say this man assaulted a woman wednesday night in the stairwell of an east flatbush apartment building. if you recognize him, please call the nypd. and the gunman who allegedly held up a gas station in duchess county is behind bars this morning. police arrested 25-year-old christopher dam. they say he's the person in this surveillance video tuesday night storming a gas station with a shotgun. but to his surprise, the owner fought back, chased him out of the store. his gun wept off, but nobody was hurt. dam now facing several charges, including attempted robbery.

the democratic presidential candidates squared off in the final debate of the year. >> there were clashes over isis and gun control. there were also strong words for republican front runner donald trump. but just one day after a data breach controversy set off a feud between the bernie sanders and hillary clinton campaigns, the two sides moved quickly to squelch one of the most heated disputes so far on the democratic race. >> yes, i apologize. this is not the type of campaign that we run. >> we should move on because i don't think the american people are all that interested in this. >> well, analysts say both sanders and governor martin o'malley delivered strong debate performances. clinton maintains a commanding lead in the polls. jeb bush is keeping up his criticism of republican front runner donald trump. >> he's just -- doesn't have a serious idea about anything and we're living in serious times. >> bush campaigned in new hampshire yesterday. after a town hall meeting, bush ripped trump to reporters, continuing a line of attack he unveiled at the last republican

and trump himself had harsh words for democratic rivals clinton and sanders. >> there's this guy, foolish guy bernie. super liberal. i don't know, you might want to call him a communist. they say socialist. she's being totally protected by a democrat government. you know that. she should not be allowed to run. >> trump held a christmas-themed rally in cedar rapids, complete with trees and festive lights, the holidays. trump is ramping up his political pot shots ahead of the away. we might hear more like that. donald trump, bernie sanders, and marco rubio will be among the guests on this week's edition of "meet the press." catch can here at 10:30. investigators in kenya are now saying that there are early indications showing no explosive component found on a suspicious device pulled off an air france flight. that flight was en route from mauritius to paris when crew members noticed the device in the bathroom.

sources in kenya tell nbc that the device had some kind of timing component. investigators are treating it as a suspected bomb. no active elements, but still a bomb. they're saying -- here is a picture of the plane on the runway. everyone on board was evacuated safely. the passengers said that crew members remained calm. >> the plane just went down slowly, slowly, slowly. we just realized probably something was wrong. the personnel of air france, which is great, always wonderful, kept everybody calm and real quiet. we didn't know what was happening. >> six passengers are being questioned at this hour. the investigation is ongoing. in iraq, a u.s. air strike may have accidently killed a number of iraqi soldiers. defense secretary ash carter says the air strike near the iraqi city of fallujah seems to be a mistake on both sides. a u.s. military statement says the air strike came in response to requests and information provided by iraqi security

carter says he's called the iraqi prime minister to express his condolences. >> i explained to him our regrets. he and i agreed that this was an event that we both regretted. >> carter is not giving any details about the air strike. he did say that the u.s. is investigating. this morning, one person is dead and at least nine others injured after an avalanche slammed into several homes in norway. this happened yesterday morning on the remote arctic ark pel low. the avalanche tumbled down early yesterday morning from a mountain that overlooks the homes. the snow killed one local resident. the nine people injured were rushed to the hospital. four of them are children. three people are in serious condition. a new miss world has been crowned in china. miss pain captured the title. the pageant has been marred by

sweets are in this season. santa can stick to the milk and cookies, but we have different pairings to savor this christmas.

magazine, john hall, joins us with suggestions. i've been cooking with beer and whiskey for years, just never as an ingredient. more of as a side dish. >> i'm more of a main course guy for that myself. but that's all right. >> occasionally i think of a marinade or something. you have baked goods here. >> we're at the time of the year where people are looking to give gifts. they're getting a lot of presents, giving a lot of presents. baked goods and alcohol sort of seem to be among the top two things you can give to people. why not try t combine them both? >> 'tis the season, like we said. what kind of cookies? >> you talked about santa with milk and cookies. how about beer and cookies? johnathan bender wrote this great book. i made these molasses cookies can out of his book and paired them with a pale ale. the flavors really marry together. >> in that case, you're not putting the beer in the mix. >> it's more of a pair. >> like wine and cheese. what makes that so good?

cookies and the piney, citrusy flavor off the beer. it just adds extra flavor to it. so if santa is your last stop, this is what you need. >> very good. pumpkin pie here? >> pumpkin pie. we have the pumpkin pie with this carton brewing company, their decoy, their winter warmer beer. it's a sort of a more full beer. it's spiced. you put that in the pie. you already have a lot of those natural spices in the pie. your all spice, cinnamon, clove. this just helps boost it up a little more. the same thing with the cookies. i went to departed souls, which is a new brewery in jersey city. i got some spent grain. when you're in the brewing process, you have grain left over after you've mixed it with hot water. i took some of that grain, mixed it in cookies with raisins, craisins. they're quite good. there's oatmeal as well. >> this is a ltle bit of recycling. >> absolutely. it's paying it forward. >> this is outstanding. >> well, thank you. my wife made those yesterday

>> wow. so you write about beer, whiskey, and you have a wife who can cook. you're living the dream. >> absolutely. i don't write about whiskey, but lou bryson does. i said, what do you do if somebody gives you a fruitcake? >> i think fruitcake gets a bad rap. >> it does. well-made fruitcake is a thing of beauty. but if you're getting that store bought stuff, you're going to need something to wash it down. lou bryson recommended these three whiskey, as he details in his book. you want more of a sweeter bourbon. you want something that will bring out some of the dried fruits in there and counteract some of that over-sugary sweetness. >> wild turkey, a classic. the experts recommend that one. >> absolutely. buffalo trace, and the haven hill. three different price ranges as well. >> something i would never think of. maybe i'm with beer and whiskey, but sake? >> so here's the thing.

probably going to be gifted a lot of bottles you're not quite sure what to do with. so there's this great book called "the year of drinking adventurously." it's a cool book. he takes a lot of bottles and styles of alcohol that you're not necessarily sure what to do with. he gives you these bite-size courses. there's 52 chapters, one for each week of the year. i chose sake. we put sake into this chocolate cake he recommended. you can pair it with a sake. this is an american-made one actually that he recommends. the alcohol burns off a little bit. it just leaves this really nice sweetness in there. this is probably still something for the adults while the kids are asleep. still, it's tasty. if you have that bottle in the cabinet, now you know something else to do with it. >> all right. john hall, thank you for coming in. happy holidays. allaboutbeer.com. >> "all about beer" magazine. >> we're going to talk about the weather, back with your seven-day forecast.
