out of durham where police are investigating a homicide and double shooting. they responded to the corner of mine the wood and dearborn brave. it's where we find emma wright with the latest. emma, what do you know? >> reporter: well, durham police just took down that crime scene tape and cleared the scene about 20 minutes ago. we do know that they've been out here since 10:30 last night. almost seven hours on maplewood drive in durham. it looks like the shooting happened in the residential neighborhood. we saw a lot of police activity when we arrived on the scene at 5:00. again, they just pulled away about 20 minutes ago. we'll show you video of what the scene looks like earlier last night. durham police say two people were shot on maplewood drive. they got the call around 10:30. they say the two people were taken to the hospital where one person died. they say the other person does not have life-threatening injuries. right now, we're still waiting

police used a stun gun on him following a high-speed chase. the suspect of smithfield led them on a chase from wilson to johnston county. authorities say he finally lost control of his vehicle by highway 70 and got out and ran toward an officer, disregarding several commands to stop. in state news, thieves used a vehicle to crash into a jewelry store in charlotte. police are looking for the burglar or burglars. there's no word on what was stolen. the fire department reported the crash around 5:30 in the morning. by the time police arrived, the vehicle was gone. kinston city leaders were adding a police or fire department. after an audit, they decided to reorganize into separate police and fire departments with each having its own chief. the city will work out a budget

deployment to iraq, members of the 82nd airborne division are coming home. >> more than 160 paratroopers and their families are scheduled to be reunited on pope army airfield. this is the last group of 82nd airborne division paratroopers to redeploy from iraq and marks the end of a successful deployment. george martin quietly guided the man's twist musical and cultural revolutionaries is dead this morning. martin is 90 years old. his manager says he passed peacefully from his home. celebrities across the world shared their thoughts from martin. ringo starr tweeted god bless george martin. peace and love to judy and his family. meanwhile, another story in south carolina with one of the south's most famous and beloved lowcountry artists. about 1,000 people filled the church in buford, south carolina to say good-bye to

some of his more famous books include the prince of tides and the waters wide. what a loss. now to the healthwatch this morning, new research finds special baby formulas that claim to protect against allergies aren't effective. a study published in the british medical journal took a look at 37 different trials and found no evidence that the formulas reduced the risk of developing conditions such as milk allergies and eczema. the fda previously approved manufacturers claims that some farm las can reduce the risk of eczema. your water is safe to drink. that's what state health officials are telling hundreds of residents living near coal ash ponds. last spring, dhhs sent letters to nearly 300 people near the ponds.

cleared the scene about an hour ago. we'll give you a look at where this shooting happened in a residential neighborhood for a while. police had about half of maplewood drive blocked off while they investigate. we're going to show you a look at what this crime scene looked like earlier this morning. we're told that two people were shot around 10:30 last night. durham police say that blown were taken to the hospital. they say that one person died at the hospital. the other person has nonlife- threatening injuries. so far, durham police haven't released the names of the victims or names of any suspects. they also haven't said if there is a motive in the case. police say this is still under investigation and they hope to release more information about what happened here later today. we here at cbs north carolina will continue to follow this story and bring you more updates as we get them. i'm emma wright, cbs north carolina. >> emma, thank you.

the homicide and double shooting. around 10:30 last night, police responded to the corner of maplewood and dearborn drives just north of i-85 and also where we have cbs north carolina's emma wright following the story. she has more. emma? >> reporter: police cleared this scene about an hour ago. they did have most of maplewood drive taped off. know this happened around 10:30 last night. police had been out here for about seven hours. they say when they arrived on the scene around 10:30 last night they found two people that had been shot. both people were taken to the hospital and say one person died about the hospital. the other person has nonlife- threatening injuries. i did talk with durham police earlier this morning. they say this is still an ongoing investigation and haven't released the names of two people that were shot and they haven't said if they have any suspects. they say they hope to release more later today.
