"progress is impossible without change" iowa state coach paul rhoads appears to have taken that quote to heart this week going with joel lanning the starting qb over sam richardson. and while that appeared to be the big topic of the day, coach rhoads made an even bigger headline. "unfortunately i had to make a change at offensive coordinator this morning. mark and i couldn't get on the same page on a few importnat items. we tried to talk that through again this morning in an effort to get us moving in a different direction, in the end mark was not interested in that, i wish that wasn't the case." with that offensive coordinator mark mangino has been relieved of his duties. paul rhoads named qb coach todd sturdy as the new o-c. mangino has been relieved of his duties. paul rhoads named qb coach todd sturdy as the new o-c. when asked the reason for the change, rhoads said this wasn't a new issue. "it's been ongoing for several weeks and we'd been trying to work that out. in the end we couldn't come to a conclussion together and he's decided not to accept the direction we want to go." the move also caught the players off guard. rhoads hadn't addressed the team before the change was announced. "i didn't even know about it until i just got here, so it was kind of shocking, but nothing's going to change really, it's going to be the same

plays anyways, so nothings going to change." before the mangino announcement, the big news of the day was the switch at qb. joel lanning has been named the starter of sam richardson. a move rhoads said gives them the best shot to win now. "i think the biggest piece that came out of saturday's performance was the energy level of our football team, not just our offense, but our football team when he took over. but right now coming out of that game with joel's performance and the energy of our team, we think joel gives us the best opportunity." "it hasn't even hit me yet, i'm just thinking about it, my stomach's kind of eating at me a little bit, not really getting hungry, just thinking about saturday and being a little nervous. but there's reason to be at all, just like another week preparing myself like i have in the past." we also caught up with former cyclone jeff woody to get his thoughts on all the changes in ames... "rhoads felt that mangino wasn't, like he said, wasn't on board

and they weren't going in the same direction. and i think coach rhoads is aware of the fact that he's hanging by the short hairs of his job. so to be able to make that change in the middle of the season, it does take quite a bit of gumption to do that. but i do think it lies more down to, in order for me to save my job we all have to be going in the same direction and you're not going in the same direction so this whole program gets completely disbanded if we're all not moving together." iowa state made another change going with chris francis as kicker over cole netton. saturday's homecoming game versus texas is set for 6 pm on fs-1. jon/sx3s stephanie/sx3s jack/sx3s we'll be right back... you're watching local
