field is now down to nine heading into new hampshire. lots of glad handing on the campaign trail, spending lots of money in iowa will only get a candidate so far. 1:20 steffen: i think that's what is nice about iowa is we give them a chance to really shine and be great and connect and then we give them a chance to bow out and let the field shrink down. dr. steffen schmidt says that's overlooked part of iowa's first in the nation duty. not just to pick winners of the caucuses, but to weed the candidates out who weren't gaining traction. :47 steffen: caucus night in iowa was an opportunity for some individuals to say i'm just not connecting and i'm dropping out and the did. schmidt says other lower tier candidates who are trying to hang in there after the caucuses may not have much time left. 2:30 i know some of those are still hoping that new hampshire will save their compaign and i think some of them are delusional, they just don't fit into this year's republican environment.

dr. schmidt says candidates like carly fiorina, john kasich, and chris christie are hoping to bounce back after new hampshire but if they don't do well there, they may call it quits. live in the studio, amanda krenz, local five news, we are iowa. stephanie: we want to know what you think about the importance of the iowa caucuses weeding out presidential candidates from the race? " we saw a record- shattering turnout. as conservatives all across the state of iowa came out and stood together. they put the country on notice that

nominee or the next president of the united states." cruz trails new hampshire by a lot, and will need to show a strong republican debate this weekend to caucus momentum. the debate is hosted by a-b-c news. stephanie: new details in the hot lotto jackpot mystery that left iowa in the national spotlight. stephanie: a new lawsuit was filed in polk county court today. spanning from the arrest and conviction of eddie tipton- a former security director for the multi state lottery association. a jury found tipton guilty of rigging the hot lotto jackpot in november of 2010. where he tried to claim 16 million for himself. stephanie: today, a des moines lawfirm says when the iowa lottery and multi state lottery association allowed tipton to rig the jackpot - they

giant jackpot. crawford and mauro say larry dawson- of webster city- won the following lottery on may of 2011. they claim dawson should've won 16 million. so they want the iowa lottery and m-u-l-s to pay him 10 million plus interest. they're also questioning the security and surviellance practices of both lotto locations. " "this was a theft. this was a rigged game. there was no prize as lottery rules. shouldnt have gone back and should go back now, should be reverted"" stephanie: the lawsuit asks for a jury trial. the iowa lottery did not return our call for comment. tipton is currently free as he appeals his conviction. however he is set to be on trial in another state for fraud later this year. jack: we have the names of the people who police say were involved in a shooting near a cluster of waukee schools this morning. police say those involved are 19- year-old jejuan (jay-jonn) lyke (like) junior, 18 year old william walls, and an unnamed 17 year old.

charged with attempted murder, robbery, intimidation with a weapon, and going armed with intent. this happened a little after 8 am, when waukee police were called to the 11-hundred block of southeast olson drive on a report of shots fired. no one was hit, though one victim was taken to the hospital for none life- threatening injuries. "upon arrival there they found a subject there that been injured during an altercation it was determined during the course of the investigation that shots had been fired but the subject had not been hit nor had anyone else been shot during the altercation " jack: waukee high school, prairieview and waukee middle school were put on lockdown. no one was allowed to go in or out . once the district realized there was no threat to the schools, they returned to normal. jack: we also have the name of the man who was hit crossing the street on caucus night in west des moines. richard carstensen from west des moines was hit by a

" i'm sure hillary clinton wanted the audience to chew over her speech, (hillary clinton, (d) presidential candidate) "and we have to be united." but maybe not quite so literally. (jeanne moos, new york) "what are the different nicknames you've had? (peter clinkscales, "sticker boy") "i've gotten sticker boy, sticker man...idiot, that's a popular one." 18-year old peter clinkscales masticated throughout hillary's speech. (hillary clinton, (d) presidential candidate) "an incredible honor to..." the drake university freshman bopped his neck. (hillary clinton, (d) presidential candidate) "to have a real contest of ideas" the only idea peter had was to mess around after he and a friend managed to seat themselves right behind the candidate. (peter clinkscales, "sticker boy") "moticed a lot of cameras pointed at me so just started goofing around." and viewers couldn't look away. "can we all just agree that #stickerkid is the one to bring our nation together." (hillary clinton, (d) presidential candidate) "we have to be united." peter's not a hillary fan. though he once posed with bernie sanders, he's not passionate about any candidate and instead of bothering to caucus he came here to fool around. (jeanne moos, new york) "making fish faces behind hillary clinton on national tv...i bet he faced the wrath of his parents when he got home around 1 in the morning." (peter clinkscales, "sticker boy") "my dad was on the computer just laughing at everything that was happening. he was like "you're so stupid."" and when the speech ended, peter danced. mashable tweeted "the mvp of hillary's speech is clearly dancing sticker guy" who joked about selling his leftover hillary

are iowa sports" jon: welcome back-- today is national high school football players it's matt campbell's first at iowa state and boy did he live up to the high hopes-- landing 36 new recruits. recruiting class the nation by huge. for formula to landing guys he wanted was honesty. "it's really easy to be honest with these guys in the recruiting process. division one football is hard. it's not easy we're going to ask a lot of them. this is going to be an attitude and effort based football program. we're really simple and up front. we're probably too up front sometimes in the recruiting process. they're down to earth people. they're just regular people that happen to be football coaches and that's what really drew me. not to bash any of the other schools but these guys were really truthful i had questions like do you have this stuff well no we don't do you have

truthful but like i said just great guys that happen to be football coaches and that's just an easy decision for me when it comes to iowa state. first he wanted to lay the foundation down and get to know him more. you know it starts with winning a big 12 championship. i think today speaks volumes and the track that we're going. do i think there are some major holes. absolutely. did we address some of those? we sure tried to. i think there are some good building blocks in our football program but great programs have a roster from 1 to 105 that are outstanding. " meanwhile student athletes from around central iowa made it official including three division one linemen from the ciml. valley's john raridon will attend nebraska next season. while urbandale's jake heinrich and caleb bright will also be going d-1. heinrich to arkansas and bright to bowling green. it just shows the depth of the

be more excited to continue their careers. "really fell in love with the coaches. it's a great atmosphere in fayetteville great football tradition as well. i just can't wait to be a razorback. it's an outstanding feeling. the recruiting process is just a roller coaster. i mean i'm happy it's over. full scholarship play offensive guard there and redshirt the first year. i've been committed since my junior year so it's been a long wait i feel relieved to have it officially over with i'm just going to go in compete and see what happens." jon: now last night the iowa state cyclones fell in ugly fashion to west virginia. it wasn't the score that wasn't pretty-- it was the style in which it happened. they led by as many as 15 at one point in hilton where they're rarely beaten. they were up 5 with a couple of minutes left-- and they just couldn't find a way to close it out. "tough loss frustrating loss played really well especially in the first half. foul trouble negated good things. figured out how to get back and then we didn't close the game well. i

about 2 minutes left. and didn't close well for whatever reason so we gotta get better. we got a great team, great coaching staff. we just gotta finish we finished before. i don't think it's the end of the world we got a lot of plays still to play and anything can happen in this league so we're just going to keep working man keep getting better and just try to get better every day.
