hearing from school districts that they've had to delay buying classroom materials, textbooks, and technology. the funding for the 20-18 school year passed along party lines. the senate voted in favor of 4 percent - 26 to 24. the bill now moves on to the republican controlled house. stephanie: new details on a des moines fire that put firecrews in danger and left one man dead overnight. stephanie: it happened shortly after midnight on 59th street in des police were home twice last night for noise complaints officers evetually tried to make contact with a man inside the house, fire inside. to leave... he then threatened told them he had a gun... police initally broke down the door to try and get him out... but were forced out by the fire and smoke. the man in the house died. police say he is 48 year old neil johnston. local 5's nikki davidson is live in des moines with the latest news from the police on this case.

nikki:: right...it only took fire crews about 2 minutes to put out the flames.... but they didn't start doing their job right away, simply because they couldn't. the man inside the home had threatened police and said he had a weapon... which made this an unusual and difficult situation... "what started as a disturbance call, quickly turned into a rescue operation on 59th street... one that des moines police officers are not equipped for. and when fire crews arrived on scene... they faced a similar problem. 2:37:07 we aren't epuipped to deal with flame, heat, smoke. we don't have the tools they have, they aren't equipped to deal with the threat of violence. we worked as far as we could. that meant that despite a burning home... the des moines fire department had to stay back...and wait until the threat of violence was over. 2:46:44 the added situation of someone making verbal threats, thats beyond our scope. when officers gave fire crews the ok to enter the burning home... they found 48 year old neil johnson dead inside.

jack: natural grocers opened its first location in the metro today to a huge group of customers. the organic foods store is located in the parking lot of the old dahl's grocery store on 86th and hickman in clive. natural grocers offers organic produce and other products, and this location has a "grab and go" station with sandwiches, salads, and other quick items. "you know, the marketplace is growing so quickly because people are becoming more educated as consumers. the more educated people become as consumers, the more they're looking to purchase in sectors like this. so, i really think that...i don't see a risk of that at this point." jack: something different about natural grocers is the groceries themselves. customers have to bring their own grocery bags, buy a reusable bag at the store, or pack their items into boxes near the checkout. stephanie:

jon: welcome back the iowa hawkeyes have been one of the hottest teams in the nation. they play both court-- and don't lose too often-- now another indiana. with more on what should be a fast paced affair thursday we go out to alex giaimo in iowa city. " thursday's matchup between iowa and indiana features two of the big ten's top scorers. jarred uthoff on the hawkeyes and indiana's yogi ferrell. which means this game will most likely be extremed high tempo'd and high scoring.
